Ryder ten-for sends Glamorgan to first defeat

Glamorgan suffered their first Championship defeat of the summer as Essex crushed them by 248 runs in their Division Two match at Chelmsford

ECB/PA15-Jul-2015
ScorecardJesse Ryder completed a 10-wicket match haul to hand victory to Essex•Getty ImagesGlamorgan suffered their first Championship defeat of the summer as Essex crushed them by 248 runs in their Division Two match at Chelmsford. After resuming on 110 for 1, having been left a target of 462, they were bowled out for 213 soon after lunch with only 18-year-old Aneurin Donald putting up much resistance. The teenager caught the eye with some fine strokes either side of the wicket before he tried to square cut a shoulder high delivery from David Masters and was caught behind by James Foster for 67.Donald’s fine innings contained seven fours and one six and served to underline the shortcomings of most of his colleagues. Admittedly, overcast conditions did provide the Essex bowlers with some assistance but not nearly as much as their efforts would imply.Poor shot-selection speeded Glamorgan’s demise and left Essex celebrating a third victory from their last four games. Fittingly it was Jesse Ryder who sealed the win by having Graham Wagg caught at long-off by Graham Napier.Wagg decided to hit out and struck two sixes on his way to 28 from 18 balls before Ryder had the last word. It gave Ryder 4 for 53 and a match haul of 10 for 100, only the second time in his career he has picked up a ten-wicket haul. The game from which Essex emerged with 21 points also provided captain Foster with personal satisfaction as he emerged with seven catches, five of them in the second innings. The first of those ended the resistance of his Glamorgan counterpart Jacques Rudolph, who added just 2 to his 45 before Ryder found the edge. This set the Welsh county on a slippery slope as seven wickets tumbled in the morning session for 72 despite Donald’s valiant attempts to keep his side’s interest in proceedings alive. But they quickly evaporated as Colin Ingram, Chris Cooke, Mark Wallace and Craig Meschede all departed within 12 overs, only Ingram managing to reach double figuresMasters, with 3 for 37, supplied Ryder with his main support while left-arm spinner Liam Dawson 2 for 34 and Jamie Porter, who ended with 1 for 41, shared the other wickets as Essex were able to avenge the 89-run defeat suffered in Cardiff earlier in the season. Glamorgan return to Wales with just three points and reflecting on a setback that put the brake on their promotion ambitions.

CSK target final-overs bite, RCB early boosts

Chennai Super Kings’ finishers haven’t functioned to full potential, much the same as Royal Challengers Bangalore’s bowling outfit

Agarkar: Starc will make a huge difference

Big picture”Ideal” was how a beaming Virat Kohli described Royal Challengers Bangalore’s start. But since beating Kolkata Knight Riders at their (E)den, his post-match quotes have been considerably subdued. He wouldn’t bother masking the weakness of the bowling attack, and was equally unflattering last Sunday after his batsmen made a dysfunctional start – 24 for 0 in the six Powerplay overs – in a chase of 210. Now they have to contend with Chennai Super Kings.Only there are cracks in MS Dhoni’s team as well, starting with his own form. His struggle for timing is explained by a strike-rate of 118 and it has impacted their charge in the final overs. Ravindra Jadeja has 17 runs in the tournament so far, and hasn’t batted in the last two innings. Dwayne Bravo hit 62 of his 76 runs in one match. It almost seems like Super Kings have done a 180 on their strategy – from being a line-up that did most of its damage in the final overs, they now rely on the openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith to do so.And that is why Mitchell Starc will be priceless for Royal Challengers. He is likely to start his IPL season tomorrow and gives the attack much needed venom, and perhaps more importantly he can lead it. A potential one-stop fix for a problem that has begun to weigh on them. They look a team in dire need of a boost, and downing arguably the most successful T20 team would be the perfect tonic before going on the road again.Watch out for…Nine overs, 95 runs and one wicket. A duck and a 17 in the only times he’s been able to bat. This IPL season has been taxing on Ravindra Jadeja. As quick as his darts are, batsmen have managed to get under them and use the additional pace. He’s also been hidden whenever left-handers are at the crease. But he doesn’t look like the kind of player who pays much mind to statistics. Rather like the kind who functions on confidence, and he rarely lacks that.In the other camp is another spinner who likes tossing the ball up. Yuzvendra Chahal is young, eager to impress and has been Royal Challengers’ most dependable bowler so far. The team’s trust in him has been growing and he often looks for Kohli for the first high-five after his wickets, as if thanking his captain for the faith. Royal Challengers would hope those little interludes grow more frequent.Stats and trivia Super Kings have won eight of their last 12 games against Royal Challengers. They had lost four out of six before that Two batsmen have scored more than 500 runs in Super Kings-Royal Challengers encounters – Suresh Raina (500) and Virat Kohli (609) Super Kings’ batsmen have the best average (37.05) in the 2015 IPL while Royal Challengers’ batsmen are on the other end of that table (22.33)Quotes”It is still T20 cricket, so my plans aren’t going to change. The way I bowl is regardless of where we are”

Gazi set to test reworked action

After a change to his delivery stride, Sohag Gazi is confident of his reworked bowling action and believes it might help him spin the ball more as well. He is set to travel to Chennai for an official test on January 24 as he hopes to lift his suspension from bowling in international cricket.”I have worked on my landing foot’s positioning,” Gazi said. “It was a similar problem to that of [Sachithra] Senanayake but as soon as I corrected my footing, the rest was fixed automatically. I am more side-on these days, less chest-on. I can find more turn with this new action.””To be honest, I have forgotten my previous bowling action, despite not making a big change overall. I am satisfied with what I have done, plus I have performed with this new action in the domestic competition. I have taken more than 15 wickets.”Gazi was reported for a suspect action in Bangladesh’s second ODI against West Indies in August last year and was suspended from bowling in October after he was tested in Cardiff.Gazi has been working towards a remedy with Bangladesh spin coach Ruwan Kalpage, under whose supervision he had bowled in the nets during the Zimbabwe series.Gazi then applied what he had learned with the help of Salahuddin, a computer analyst with BCB and had been training to stay in contention for the World Cup, but he was unable to find a place in the preliminary squad nor the final 15 that was picked by the Faruque Ahmed-led selection committee.”I have worked very hard on my action. I have bowled for more than three hours every day for a month since I started working. I was helped immensely by Salahuddin during this time, and he traveled with me for my Dhaka Premier League matches to do video of my bowling. I was working harder because it is every cricketer’s dream to play in the World Cup. But I couldn’t make it, but I feel that whatever has happened happened for a reason.”Gazi was initially supposed to work with Mohammad Salahuddin, Bangladesh’s former fielding coach who had successfully helped Abdur Razzak with his illegal bowling action in 2008. But the plan, despite having the backing of Akram Khan, BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman, didn’t pan out.Instead Gazi returned to domestic cricket in Novemeber, took 17 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, in seven Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League matches for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club.

Southee return bolsters New Zealand

Big Picture

On October 21, a rusty New Zealand batting line-up paid for its impatience in the first ODI against South Africa. Two days later, Jesse Ryder scored 136 off 57 balls for Otago, dominating Ireland’s World Cup preparation game. Ryder’s performance came days after he met New Zealand coach Mike Hesson, who was non-committal about the batsman’s return to the national side ahead of the 2015 World Cup. With Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor sidelined by injury, New Zealand are missing three of their best batsmen against South Africa, and it showed. All three will not play the remaining two ODIs against South Africa, so the incumbent batsmen will have to assess the conditions in Mount Maunganui better and choose their shots wisely if they are to keep the series alive after Friday. New Zealand, however, will have the services of Tim Southee, who was passed fit after missing the first game because of a shoulder niggle, to add teeth to an attack that was disciplined but lacked incisiveness in the six-wicket defeat. While batting and upsetting the concentration of South Africa’s experienced batsmen were concerns for New Zealand, the visitors had fewer issues. The only time they loosened their grip on the game was when Luke Ronchi and Trent Boult shared a record last-wicket stand for New Zealand. South Africa bowled poorly at the death and after the game their captain AB de Villiers reiterated the importance of finishing games off clinically.New Zealand’s top order struggled in the first ODI against South Africa in Mount Maunganui•AFP

Unlike South Africa, whose World Cup combination appears to require only fine-tuning, New Zealand’s drawing board is more cluttered. Daniel Vettori has returned, so where does he fit in? What is the ideal composition of their pace attack? Are allrounders Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson good enough to combine as the fifth bowler? Will Neesham cut it as opener? And what about Jesse Ryder?

Watch out for

David Miller v Rilee Rossouw AB de Villiers indicated choosing between the two powerful left-hand batsmen was going to be “a tough decision to make.” Miller sat out of the first game because of a viral infection and Rossouw made a brisk 26. Miller is likely to get his chance in the second ODI, but South Africa bat him as a finisher lower in the order – as opposed to Rossouw at No. 4 – so his opportunity may be slimmer.Trent Boult is not a regular starter in New Zealand’s one-day side. He’s played only two ODIs in the last two years. On Tuesday, however, with Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan not playing, Boult was easily New Zealand’s best bowler. He swung the ball at pace, harried South Africa’s top order and dismissed Faf du Plessis for his first single-digit score in 14 innings.

Team news

Southee’s availability will mean a change to the bowling attack New Zealand fielded on Tuesday. Given the two spinners, Vettori and Nathan McCullum, were able to restrict South Africa, Southee could come in for Kyle Mills.New Zealand (probable): 1 Jimmy Neesham, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Dean Brownlie, 4 Brendon McCullum (capt), 5 Tom Latham, 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Kyle Mills/Tim Southee, 11 Trent BoultIf Miller is passed fit, he could replace Rossouw. That’s the only change South Africa are likely to make, despite Wayne Parnell being available for selection. Ryan McLaren is the incumbent allrounder.South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller/Rilee Rossouw, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir

Stats & trivia

  • De Villiers averages 54 and has a strike rate of 87 against New Zealand. He’s scored 490 runs in 14 ODIs against them.
  • McClenaghan and Southee have both played three ODIs against South Africa. McClenaghan has six wickets at an average of 23.50 in those games; Southee has two at 84.50 apiece.

Quotes

“Anything above 250 is defendable in New Zealand. Everybody struggled at the start of their innings and built up from there. It was a pretty good wicket. It had good bounce. It had good carry and there wasn’t much turn.”
“It’s good to have that competition because it gets the best out of everyone. We’re a competitive group of guys and everyone is pushing each other to do well and it’s nice to have that.”

Plunketts enjoying second life

A second chance at Test cricket is something that neither Liam Plunkett or his father Alan thought they would ever see.

George Dobell18-Jun-20145:16

Sri Lanka would be happy with 0-0

Even Liam Plunkett’s father thought he would never play for England again•Getty ImagesFriday will be a special day in the Plunkett household. Not only will Liam Plunkett play a Test on his new home ground of Headingley, but he will be watched by his father. For both men, it was a day they thought would never come.It is more than seven years since Plunkett last played a Test at Headingley. Since then, he has moved counties and rebuilt a game that had fallen apart so completely that he could barely be trusted to land the ball on the cut strip at times. From taking the new ball for England, he suddenly found himself playing second XI cricket for Durham.More pertinently, his father, Alan, has been seriously ill. Having already had a liver transplant, he also required a kidney transplant after being diagnosed with a hereditary condition called polycystic kidney disease. From 7am until 1pm, three days a week, he was forced to undergo dialysis. When it became clear that a kidney transplant was the only option left to Alan, Liam immediately offered to donate one of his own kidneys. Tests showed that other family members had the same condition and were unsuitable donors. But Alan declined the offer fearing that it would damage the cricketing prospects of his then 21-year-old son.”He’s good now,” Plunkett said. “I offered him my kidney a while back and he’s had a transplant now so he’s healthy, but you’d do that at the drop of a hat for your old man wouldn’t you?”He didn’t take one, because I was young and he wanted me to play cricket for as long as I could. He wanted me to play for England.”He was on dialysis for quite a few years. It’s just tedious, and ties up your life. You can’t really go away with your family. It’s Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 7am till one o’clock. But, he’s never complains; that’s the thing with my dad.”He said to me on the phone the other day ‘I honestly thought you probably wouldn’t play for England again. You’ve proved me wrong, and I’m over the moon for you.'”But he lives down the road from here, so I’ll be disappointed if he didn’t pop in to the Test.”Almost as important to the development of Liam Plunkett has been the input of Jason Gillespie. The former Australian fast bowler has shown huge belief in Plunkett, coaxing him from Durham and nurturing him at Yorkshire.”I was in Durham seconds before I came here,” Plunkett said. “I didn’t complain; I like playing, and I batted a lot more playing for Durham seconds. But, I used to go back to the hotel and think ‘where am I going with this? Why am I not bowling to my full potential; why am I not getting wickets?’ I wanted to play more and I wasn’t playing for Durham.”I just still felt I had a lot more to give. I love playing cricket, and I didn’t want to do anything else. I never thought about walking away from it, not for one minute.”I just felt like I needed a change, because that can slip away. I’ve seen so many people who’ve played for England and then two years later they’re not even in the game. I didn’t want that to happen to me.”It was over-coaching, thinking about the game too much myself. And I just didn’t play enough cricket. It got to the point where, when I was going to sleep at night, I was thinking about bowling four wides first ball.”If you get down on yourself, if you haven’t played for a couple of months and then you play you and bowl a few wides, when you’re younger you think it’s the end of the world.”Then, when you come to bowl again, you’re a bit afraid to bowl.”Different coaches told me different things and when you’re a youngster you’re like a sponge and take a lot of things in. I think you learn when you’re older to filter stuff in and out. If it’s good advice you can keep it and take it with you but if it’s not you can say no thanks. I think I’ve learned to do that a bit better and just back myself.”Back then I didn’t back myself and just got by on a bit of talent. I would get my wickets and not think anything about it but now I have learned how I do stuff.”When I came to Yorkshire, Jason Gillespie just told me to run it and bowl quick. And when I did that I backed myself, bowled in my good areas and started picking up wickets. So I am thankful. I made mistakes but I’m back here now and hopefully I’ve got a few years left.”Gillespie said ‘just don’t think about it.’ Actually that may also have come from Geoff Boycott. I met him when I first signed and he just said ‘don’t think, just bowl’ and walked off. That’s all he said to me and I haven’t spoken to him since but it makes sense now to be honest.”I do best when I don’t think too much about it. It’s like when you speak to a bowler. You ask what they think about when they bowl well and you just have to think about getting him out. It went worse for me when I started thinking about it too much. Dizzy gave me clarity. Once I got that I think I excelled.”Now aged 29, Plunkett’s dream of playing 100 Tests may have gone. But, if he can help England regain the Ashes and enjoy a couple of years of success, it might just make the years of dissatisfaction and the sacrifice of his father seem worthwhile.Investec, the specialist bank and asset manager, is the title sponsor of Test match cricket in England. Dwyer resigns as Bangladesh trainer

Bangladesh trainer David Dwyer has stepped down from his position after 14 months on the job

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Apr-2014Bangladesh trainer David Dwyer has stepped down from his position after 14 months on the job. Akram Khan, the BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee Chairman, confirmed the receipt of the resignation letter two days ago.Dwyer is understood to have asked for immediate release. He joined Bangladesh as the head of strength and conditioning in February last year, a week before the team left on a tour of Sri Lanka. Like the rest of the coaching staff, Dwyer’s contract was due to expire after the 2015 World Cup.”He has done a great job for the Bangladesh team,” Akram said. “It is up to the board to accept his resignation, but I think we have to start looking for a new trainer immediately. We have a lot of cricket ahead.”Bangladesh’s next assignment is a three-match ODI series against India in mid-June. The tour schedule, however, hasn’t been confirmed.

Taylor ton delivers series triumph

It took its time coming, it tested a few nerves, but New Zealand finally sealed their first series win at home in five years, not counting the ones against Zimbabwe and Bangaldesh

The Report by Sidharth Monga28-Jan-20140:00

Crowe: NZ have dominated through the series

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Ross the Boss: Taylor scored his ninth century•Getty ImagesIt took its time coming, it tested a few nerves, but New Zealand finally sealed their first series win at home in five years, not counting the ones against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. They should have won it three nights ago, they should probably have won it more comfortably tonight after having reduced India to 278 and then reached 54 for 0 in seven overs and 182 for 2 in 33. They will be thankful that they had their two most consistent batsmen – Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson – in the middle when Ravindra Jadeja started to turn the ball square after he himself gave India a fighting total with 62 off 54, a much more assured innings than the one that tied the previous match to keep India alive.Williamson now has four half-centuries in four matches in this series, and Taylor made up for missing out on one in Auckland by turning this into a big one once he crossed 50. Taylor’s innings was exceptional in its discipline: he didn’t try his favourite slog-sweep, in fact he scored just 10 runs in his midwicket arc. Most of his runs came behind and in front of square on the off side. India couldn’t be accused of showing similar discipline when they batted, but they were also put under pressure by a superbly disciplined start by Kyle Mills and Tim Southee, which led to their repetition of the shot that has been getting them out. Between them Southee and Mills bowled three maidens, took three wickets, and conceded just 78.India surprised everyone by not only getting rid of their stubbornness but going to the other end. Not only did they drop Suresh Raina, which was long overdue, they also left out Shikhar Dhawan for Ambati Rayudu, and decided to bat first after having invited the opposition 20 straight times outside Asia. With no specialist opener in the side, India moved everyone up by one spot, which meant India’s best batsman was now opening. However, the opening spells that Mills and Southee bowled would have frustrated the best of openers. There was nothing to drive or cut, forget getting too straight, and India would have had to take a risk if they were going to score. The first risk was taken to the first short ball bowled, and all Kohli managed was a top edge off Southee. Soon Mills got a similar response from Ajinkya Rahane. In between the two dismissals, Rohit became desperate, somehow hit the first boundary of the innings, enjoyed a drop from Taylor, and India still reached only 28 in 10 overs.More good luck, and some classy Rohit shots, followed, and a 79-run partnership shored India up. However, the luck soon ran out. Rayudu top-edged Hamish Bennett, and in an ironical turn of events Rohit edged Kane Williamson for a catch down the leg side. Of all the bowlers, of all the manners. From 151 for 5, India came back remarkably with two batsmen who applied themselves before taking 100 off the last 10 overs. Say what you will about the strategy, Dhoni proved his batting worth with a third fifty in a row. Jadeja, at the other end, showed Auckland was no fluke, and played the cleanest knock of the three fifties in the Indian innings. It was a good comeback if you look at the way India began: two boundaries and 28 runs in 10 overs. New Zealand hit two fours in the first over, reached 28 in the fourth, and were well on their way to hammer India when Jesse Ryder paid once again for his tendency to stay leg side of the ball in order to create room for his off-side hits. That played-on dismissal was followed by Martin Guptill’s lbw – the first such dismissal of the series – and India now had an opening. The opening began to look wider when Jadeja turned the first ball he bowled across Williamson. He beat the bat three times in the first over. R Ashwin provided good support from the other end. The second 10 overs of New Zealand’s innings were the most crucial period of the match. Both Williamson and Taylor played with utmost caution, scored just the 30 runs, saw the asking rate reach 6.13, but didn’t give the spinners a wicket. You would have expected Dhoni to take one of the spinners off and continue attacking with one, but he completely took the pressure off by removing both Jadeja and Ashwin. Suddenly all the pressure was eased, and Taylor and Williamson – 24 off 37 and 17 off 38 respectively – cashed in. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron and Rayudu all conceded boundaries as 63 runs came in the nine overs before Ashwin was brought back.By that time, you would have thought, the game was over, but Jadeja turned it around with a run-out off his own bowling. Another nervous period followed as Brendon McCullum, searching for form, on a hat-trick of ducks, fumbled around a little and the asking rate went past six again. Taylor, though, stood firm at the other end, and guided his captain through hitting timely fours to keep the requirement within reach. The next call of duty was to play out the two remaining overs of Jadeja. That done, the two finished their highest-successful chase against India in style, turning what had looked nervous into a comfortable win with 11 balls to spare.
