Danny Rose is now a free agent after seeing out the last few years at Tottenham Hotspur not playing a single first-team game, but despite his lack of game time former Leeds United midfielder David Norris believes that he would be a great signing for his former club.

Rose left Leeds back in 2007 when he was a promising and exciting youngster and he eventually opened up about his exit after promises were not kept, with a move to Spurs proving to be the right decision as he established himself as one of the top full-backs in the country.

The 30-year-old has been backed to make a homecoming to Leeds by former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor who believes that it would be a good move for both club and player, and would potentially provide him with some much-needed first-team minutes.

It would be a sensational return for Rose, something many would not have expected to happen a few years ago, but Norris has backed his former club to sign the full-back as he spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“He wouldn’t be going to a small-time club from down the leagues, he’d be going back to Leeds when they are in the Premier League.

“So, it would be huge for him and it really could give him a new lease of life.”

It is quite obvious that Leeds are on the hunt for a new left-back this summer with Ezgjan Alioski set to leave the club unless a new deal could be sorted out but something that Rose would have to prove is that if he is a Marcelo Bielsa player and if he’s up to the physical demands.

The last first-team football that Rose played was for Newcastle United when he spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan with the Magpies but the club decided against making it a permanent move.

A major update has emerged about Southampton central midfielder James Ward-Prowse, with Aston Villa eyeing the England international.

What’s the talk?

According to The Guardian, Aston Villa are preparing to make an offer for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. The Premier League side want to improve their midfield options and have targetted Ward-Prowse because of his impressive set-piece ability, with Villa now seemingly set to open the bidding.

Villa are on the verge of completing a deal to sign midfielder Emi Buendia from Norwich for a club-record fee of in excess of £30m. However, the report does not state how much they are willing to pay for Ward-Prowse or how much Southampton would demand for their star man.

Ralph Hasenhuttl lauded the “fantastic” right foot of Ward-Prowse in 2020 and admitted that he is on his way to becoming the full package as a midfielder. He told the Daily Echo:

“I think it was the biggest change in his game since I’m here.

“He was always a good player and had a fantastic right foot but never nobody saw him defending or winning balls like he does at the moment.

“This is maybe something he had to learn, and he had to show me, he did it.

“After a few weeks when I was here, I could see this transformation in his game was there and in the end, in modern football, every player has to have everything, also the strikers have to work against the ball, and the centre-backs or the full-backs must be a number 10 when they have the ball.

“This is in modern football necessary, you cannot have any weakness and Prowsey is on the way to getting a full package.”

Frustration for Saints fans

This news will surely lead to frustration and anger from Southampton supporters. They have become accustomed to seeing their best players walk out of the door over the past five or six years, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana just a few of the many players who have left to join top-six sides in the Premier League.

However, this would not be the case with Ward-Prowse and Villa as the clubs are considerably closer in the standings. Villa finished 12th in the Premier League in the 2020/21 campaign, whilst Southampton finished just three places lower in 15th.

Therefore, Southampton would not be selling to a top club battling in Europe and would, instead, be allowing one of their key players to join a close rival in terms of the final standings.

The £35k-per-week Saints captain was crowned the club’s Player of the Season last month after enjoying a sublime campaign in midfield. Ward-Prowse averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.07 in the Premier League and was the only Saints player to achieve a score of higher than 7.00, with Oriol Romeu (6.93) in second place.

This suggests that he is Southampton’s best player and they cannot afford to lose him this summer, let alone to a team who could be a direct rival, which is why fans could be forgiven for being extremely angered by this story.

Rangers have been linked with a move for Reading ace Josh Laurent ahead of next season and he could be a superb addition to Steven Gerrard’s side at Ibrox should he make the move north this summer.

According to The Sun, Rangers and Brighton are keen on signing the 26-year-old this summer after his impressive debut campaign with the Royals.

The report suggests that Gerrard is keen to improve the spine of his team by signing the powerful midfielder, who they estimate would cost Rangers around £8m this summer.

Laurent joined the Championship side on a two-year deal from Shrewsbury Town last summer and was a key player in Veljko Paunović’s side as they narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in England’s second tier.

The English midfielder would make 45 appearances for the Madjeski Stadium outfit, contributing three goals and three assists, earning himself a solid 6.88 rating for his performances from WhoScored.

He has been deployed mainly in a defensive midfield role by Paunović and has averaged two tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Championship, with WhoScored suggesting that his defensive contribution is his main strength.

Gerrard will surely be looking to add depth in midfield ahead of next season, as Ryan Jack’s long-term injury this season has often forced the 40-year-old manager to rotate four players – Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield – in his midfield three.

Therefore, with Kamara also being heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, it seems likely that the Gers will add some midfielders to their squad ahead of next season, and Laurent could prove to be a very shrewd addition.

He was recently named as the supporter’s Player of the Season at Reading, which led Paunovic to sing his praises, with the Serbian manager saying:

“He’s had a fantastic season, I’m very happy for him and proud of his achievements. He’s worked hard and I think he has benefitted from the huge amount of personality he has.”

After seeing off relegation-battling Fulham last weekend, Aston Villa return to Premier League action when they take on champions Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon.

Dean Smith’s side had to come from behind to beat the Cottagers at Villa Park, with goals from Trezeguet and Ollie Watkins sparking a second-half comeback.

While a trip to the reigning champions may sound like a daunting prospect, Villa will have fond memories of the last time they played Liverpool in the league, a 7-2 drubbing which saw Ollie Watkins grab a hat-trick.

Aside from Jack Grealish’s continued absence, Smith doesn’t have too many injury concerns with which to contend, but might opt to make a couple of key changes considering how the game against Fulham panned out.

In goal, Emiliano Martinez will be looking to keep a clean sheet after going three Premier League games without one, while the back four should also remain unchanged.

The midfield could see January signing Morgan Sanson drop out of the starting line-up, with John McGinn coming back in alongside Douglas Luiz.

It would certainly be a big call to go with two up top against a team like Liverpool, but it could well be the kind of tactical surprise which catches out Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Swansea City looked to have suffered a huge injury blow during the international break after footage emerged of Andre Ayew limping off after Ghana’s 3-1 win over Sao Tome and Principe at the weekend, however, the 31-year-old has now eased fears over his injury problems.

Journalist Gary Al-Smith had left Swansea fans concerned when he posted footage of the striker limping off after Ghana’s win at the weekend, with his leg heavily bandaged and him requiring the assistance of two medical staff members in order to make his way off the pitch.

However, the former West Ham man has since eased worries about his potential injury, confirming after the game that:

“It’s a knock. The doctors have seen. I can put my leg on the floor. There won’t be any issue.”

Cooper will therefore be massively relieved that his top scorer should be available after the international break, as there will have understandably been some concerns about his fitness after he picked up the injury.

Ayew, who is currently rated at £3.6 million by Transfermarkt, has been one of Swansea’s best performers in the Championship so far this season, contributing 14 goals and two assists in 36 league appearances, which has helped him average an impressive 7.20 rating.

This ranks him as their best performer of those who have made at least five appearances this season, whilst he is also comfortably the top scorer in Cooper’s side, with Jamal Lowe second with just nine Championship goals so far this campaign.

Speaking earlier in the season, the 41-year-old manager was full of praise for Ayew, saying:

“Andre is a leader, regardless of whether or not he wears the armband. He always stands up and leads by example. He’s a massive influence at this club.”
