New Zealand cruise to win after Sri Lanka's late collapse

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsNew Zealand Women began their World T20 campaign with an easy seven-wicket win after a late collapse restricted Sri Lanka Women to 110 for 8 in Delhi.Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat, and their opening pair of Chamari Atapattu and Yasoda Mendis stitched together a 39-run partnership. Mendis and Dilani Manodara built on that base, taking Sri Lanka to a promising position of 82 for 1 by the 13th over. The loss of Mendis to Amy Satterthwaite, however, sparked off a slide that undid the work of the top order.Manodara fell in the 15th over, after top-scoring with a 31-ball 37, and her wicket meant that the impetus Sri Lanka needed in the final leg of the innings did not materialize. They scraped a mere 23 runs off their last six overs for the loss of six wickets. Offspinner Leigh Kasperek took 2 for 19 but Sri Lanka also lost as many as three batsmen – including Manodara and captain Shashikala Siriwardene – to run-outs.New Zealand’s chase of 111 was clinical, despite a minor blip when they lost three wickets in as many overs. The openers, Suzie Bates and Rachel Priest, gave them early control adding 64 in the first 10 overs. Sara McGlashan and Satterthwaite then struck a flurry of boundaries to take New Zealand home with 25 balls to spare.

Williamson, Taylor power New Zealand to massive win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details2:12

‘Williamson will be key at the World Cup’ – Dravid

On a perfect batting strip at McLean Park, centuries from Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor powered New Zealand to 369, a total that proved well out of Pakistan’s reach despite the platform laid by their openers. The asking rate kept climbing on Pakistan, and their middle and lower order fell away to give New Zealand a 115-run win with close to seven overs left to play.Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez put on 111 for the first wicket, and while their scoring rate was below the required rate, they set Pakistan up for an all-or-nothing effort in the last 20 overs. At the 30-over mark, they were two down and needed 203 with Hafeez still at the crease on 80.Pakistan took the batting Powerplay at that point, and Hafeez swung the first ball from Grant Elliott over the square leg boundary. Looking for a repeat the next ball, however, he holed out off a slower ball. In came Shahid Afridi, promoted up the order, but he fell for 11 and Umar Akmal followed in the next over. There could only be one result thereafter.Batting first after winning the toss, Brendon McCullum provided the innings thrust at the start, and Martin Guptill and Williamson kept that momentum going with a 128-run second-wicket stand before Taylor added the final flourish. New Zealand scored 116 in their last 10 overs, during which time Taylor smashed 73 in 36 balls. After swinging in vain at a couple of slower full-tosses outside off from Bilawal Bhatti in the final over, Taylor was on 92 with two balls remaining. He sent the penultimate ball of the innings soaring into the crowd beyond deep extra cover, and finished with a thick outside edge to the third man boundary. Taylor’s unbeaten 102 was New Zealand’s 100th ODI century. While Taylor’s innings included plenty of his trademark clubs over the leg side, Williamson’s was full of nimble footwork and pretty strokes. For all that, it was no less brutal in its pace, and his century came up in 80 balls. Guptill looked on course for a hundred as well, and was distraught after getting himself out, launching a full-toss from the part-time legspinner Ahmed Shehzad straight into long-off’s hands. That fortuitous wicket apart, the bowlers who made up Pakistan’s fifth-bowler quota – a problem they are likely to grapple with right through the World Cup if Mohammad Hafeez doesn’t clear the tests on his bowling action – conceded 93 runs in 12 overs. That they bowled that many overs was down to the fact that two of their frontline seamers, Bilawal Bhatti and Ehsan Adil, gave away more than eight an over. With Junaid Khan out of the World Cup, neither Bhatti nor Adil made any sort of case for their inclusion as his replacement.Taking one of the two new balls, Bhatti went for 21 in his first two overs, bowling either too short or too full and conceding three fours and a six to McCullum. At the other end, Mohammad Irfan was bowling a tight line and generating plenty of bounce to keep the openers relatively quiet. Bhatti’s profligacy forced Pakistan to bring on Shahid Afridi as early as the sixth over, and he made the breakthrough in his second over, forcing McCullum to chop on while playing one cut shot too many. Afridi would have dismissed McCullum in his first over had Sarfraz Ahmed not muffed up a stumping.Later, in the 38th over of New Zealand’s innings, Sarfraz missed another stumping off Afridi, when Taylor was on 25.In between, Williamson and Guptill had put on a century stand at comfortably over a run-a-ball, without needing to play any outlandish shots. Pakistan’s bowlers – Irfan and Afridi apart – were giving them plenty of freebies, and the ball was coming on so well that Guptill could merely take a step forward and play pick-up shots over the midwicket region and Williamson could skip down the track and chip the seamers over wide mid-off.At the 30-over mark, New Zealand were 181 for 2. Doubling this, by the old logic of 50-over cricket, would give them 360, and this is precisely what they achieved.Williamson waltzed past his hundred and fell in the fourth over of the batting Powerplay, trying to scoop Irfan over short fine leg but not quite managing the adequate elevation. If Pakistan thought they could apply the brakes at that point, they were wrong. Grant Elliott and Taylor swatted Bhatti for sixes in the 43rd over, Taylor’s clearing the stadium roof. Bhatti went for 21 in his next over, the biggest of the innings, with Taylor smacking him for three fours and a six, two of those shots coming off full-tosses.Elliott holed out to Adil soon after, but Taylor carried on swinging, and dented Irfan’s figures with three successive fours at the start of his final over. Till that point, he had given away 37 runs in nine overs.

Mahela Jayawardene is unavailable for the third ODI against England, in Hambantota on Wednesday, after requesting the match off for personal reasons, Sri Lanka Cricket said.Jayawardene did not travel out of Colombo with the team, and has been replaced in the squad by Ashan Priyanjan, the 25-year-old right-hander who had been in Sri Lanka’s squad for the recent tour of India.Batsman Thilina Kandamby, the 32-year-old who has not played an ODI since 2011, is also in contention to replace Jayawardene in the middle order.Team manager Michael de Zoysa said Jayawardene would be back for the fourth ODI in Colombo in Sunday “if he is picked”.Jayawardene has two fifties in the series so far, and won the man-of-the-match award for his unbeaten 77 from 80 balls last Sunday which gave the hosts a 2-0 lead in the seven-match series.Sri Lanka’s current squad is only in effect for the first three ODIs. The selectors may make changes following the Hambantota game.

'Fun' Buttler can enlighten England

English cricket has been short on uplifting experiences of late. Jos Buttler provided one at Lord’s on Saturday. In the last three months there have been two innings by England batsmen in white-ball cricket that have set a new standard: Alex Hales’ 116 off 64 balls in the World T20 and now Buttler against Sri Lanka when he thrashed 121 off 74 balls, England’s fastest ODI hundred, albeit in defeat.Speaking immediately afterwards to TV, Buttler said the innings – and his 133-run stand with Ravi Bopara – had started as “fun” with the target so distant. Crucially, though, the fun – or freedom – never goes out of Buttler’s batting. When the chase became realistic he did not freeze or start to overthink. It took the equal skill of Lasith Malinga to stop him.”I think we were so far behind that nobody gave us a chance which took the pressure off us,” Buttler said. “It gave us the chance to play with a lot of freedom and once we got on a roll we thought we were getting in a good position here and with ten overs to go we thought we were in the box seat. If Ravi and me had been there at the end we would have won the game but someone like Malinga coming back at the end it was always going to be really tough.”Both Hales and Buttler have central roles to play in the rebuilding of English cricket, but both are being held back from progressing to their respective “next level”. There has been a reluctance to elevate Hales to the one-day side – he only made the current squad as injury cover for Alastair Cook – and now it has been confirmed that Buttler will not be a contender for the wicketkeeper’s spot in the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka if Matt Prior is unavailable.Overlooking Hales for the one-day side is actually more baffling than the caution shown over Buttler, although both players have recently shown the ability to do things that few England cricketers possess. It is widely accepted that Buttler’s keeping is raw – not least by the player himself – and that is as important to his future as a Test cricketer as his batting, although in the last decade England have not always put the importance of glovework on a par with the batting element of their keeper.Buttler has made errors behind the stumps this season for England. He dropped a simple catch against Scotland and missed a tougher leg-side stumping in the Durham ODI against Sri Lanka. His first-class batting average remains modest too, at 32.61, but this season for Lancashire he tops their averages having made 252 runs at 42.00. He is missing a century but his runs have often come after the poor Lancashire top-order has been removed for 100 or fewer.

Squash Buttler’s secret weapon

Jos Buttler has said that part of the secret to his astonishing skills in one-day cricket is down to playing squash.
While accepting there is an inherent natural ability he believes it has been honed by crossing over into other sports when he was younger. “Squash is something you can work on with reverse sweeps,” he said. “For me that is the most obvious cross over.”
But he had a more prosaic answer for where his power comes from. “I swing hard I guess,” he said. “Speed through the ball is what you are looking for. Some basics you have to abide by no matter what you are doing, but hand speed through the ball is what you are looking for in terms of power and the basics are a given such as watching the ball, which is under-rated.”

However, echoing what Cook said after the Lord’s match, although insisting conversations have not been had, Buttler was eager to dampen expectations.”It is a pretty easy assumption to make looking at my game and where I am as a player. I am not ready for Test match cricket,” he said. “It is my hope and ambition to turn into something who is talked about as a Test cricketer as quickly as I can.”Test match cricket is completely different format. I average 32 in first-class cricket and if I wasn’t playing one-day cricket I would not be at the forefront of anyone’s mind. My glovework needs to improve too to be a Test match cricketer. I am 23. I have plenty of time to work on those things.”I am getting better. This is probably the best start I have had to a first-class season. I am starting to learn my method in four-day cricket. I made the change to Lancashire to improve my wicketkeeping and do it full time. You have to remember it takes time. You want to accelerate your development but you want to be realistic as well.”If the player does not feel he is ready it is a non-starter to select him, but Buttler is a modest person. He is also the type of cricketer to reignite the debate of when outstanding natural ability should, perhaps, over-ride the need for a lengthy audition at domestic level. It is worthy to give Buttler his time at first-class level, but he will not need long. And not that selectors should select on what the public to see, but Buttler injects some much needed joy, exuberance and expression to English cricket.”Certain guys are earmarked to play Test cricket and based on someone’s opinion they think they can do it,” Buttler said. “It would be great if that was the case for me but in the meantime all I can do is keep improving. I have so many areas to improve at a fast rate and it is down to me to do that.”There is little doubt that he will make it. Those at Lord’s on Saturday who wonder why it is not sooner rather than later will just need a little patience. It will be worth it.

Kerrigan in doubt for Lions tour

Middlesex’s offspinning allrounder Ollie Rayner has been put on standby for the England Lions tour of Sri Lanka after concerns emerged about Simon Kerrigan’s fitness

Middlesex’s offspinning allrounder Ollie Rayner has been put on standby for the England Lions tour of Sri Lanka after concerns emerged about Simon Kerrigan’s fitness. Kerrigan has a back problem and is due to be assessed by medical staff next week.Rayner, an unusually tall spinner, claimed figures of 15 for 118 in a Championship match against Surrey at The Oval in September, the best figures by a Middlesex bowler since Fred Titmus in 1955. While his overall record remains modest, Rayner enjoyed by far the best season of his career in 2013, taking 46 first-class wickets at an average of 22.04, and, aged 28, should still have his best years ahead of him.He was called up to the England Performance Squad at the end of 2008 but has never won national selection at any level. The retirement of Graeme Swann, however, and the struggles of Monty Panesar and Kerrigan have left the door ajar for several candidates who might previously have thought international cricket would prove a step too far.Rayner will train with the Lions squad at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough this week, with the tour party set to depart at the end of January.Kerrigan, having earned a reputation as the brightest young spinner in county cricket over recent seasons, endured a chastening Test debut at The Oval in August, where his eight overs were thrashed for 53 and he was not trusted to bowl in the second innings. While he was included in the England Performance Programme squad to tour Australia, the 24-year-old slow left-armer was subsequently withdrawn to continue to work on his game in the less-pressurised environments at Loughborough and Old Trafford.

Hampshire secure Coles on three-year deal

Matt Coles, the England Lions fast bowler, has agreed a three-year contract with Hampshire, the county where he spent the last month of the season on loan

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Sep-2013Matt Coles, the England Lions fast bowler, has agreed a three-year contract with Hampshire, the county where he spent the last month of the season on loan. Coles had previously told Kent he would not be signing a new deal with them.Coles, who along with Ben Stokes was sent home from the Lions tour of Australia last winter, impressed during his short spell with Hampshire, taking 21 wickets in five matches, as well as scoring two half-centuries. In the final game of the season, against Essex, he claimed his best match figures of 10 for 154 in a resounding win.”I’m delighted to have made the move to Hampshire a permanent one,” Coles said. “In my short time here I’ve been very impressed with the way Giles White runs things. He has an excellent structure in place and a positive environment in which to develop and hone your skills.”Everyone at the club has welcomed me and there’s a great atmosphere in the dressing room. Hopefully, in the month I’ve been here, I have shown the guys that I’m capable of helping the team to achieve the results which will bring us promotion next season and add to the long list of honours at the Ageas Bowl.”Although Hampshire reached the semi-finals of both limited-overs competitions, they finished mid-table in Division Two. Last season, Coles claimed 52 Championship wickets at 22.03 for Kent, although he struggled for form this year before deciding to move on.Hampshire’s manager, Giles White, added; “Matt has shown matchwinning qualities during his time with us and we are delighted that he is joining the squad on a permanent basis. He is a young player with great all-round ability and we hope that he is able to fulfil his potential and build on what has been an excellent start to his Hampshire career.”
