Rangers fans discuss Brandon Barker after first Gers goal

Rangers returned to winning ways after defeat in the Old Firm Derby before the international break as they beat Livingstone 3-1 at Ibrox on Saturday.

The visitors went 1-0 up courtesy of Steven Lawless but goals from James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and Brandon Barker meant the Gers eventually prevailed.

Livingston were reduced to ten men on 73 minutes but the score stayed the same as Rangers secured all three points.

Barker’s strike happened to be his first for the club, something that provoked discussion on Twitter after he stepped up when Ryan Kent went off injured.

He impressed so much that someone posed the question of who actually needed Kent. A further individual said he deserved his goal.

Another fan stated he played class when he came on whilst he was also labelled as brilliant.

The 22-year-old is a recent signing for Rangers having joined from Manchester City in the summer.

The goal will likely come as some relief to him having endured a loan spell with Preston in 2018/19 where he failed to score in the Championship.

Here’s the best of the reaction to his goal.

Celtic fans give brutal response to Jonathan Afolabi announcement

Boy is it a bad time to sign for Celtic right now.

After fans raged at rumours this week that Neil Lennon is looking to sign Irish youth internationals, Jonathan Afolabi has now become the latest Celtic signing to be crucified by fans on arrival.

The same thing happened to Leo Hjelde when he signed earlier this summer, as the Parkhead faithful are simply desperate for first-team arrivals, not more additions to the Development Squad.

The Hoops confirmed the capture of Afolabi on Wednesday though, as the Republic of Ireland U-19 international penned a three-year deal with the club.

He was previously with Southampton, where he racked up 16 goals and eight assists for their various youth sides, per Transfermarkt.

The teenager said: “It’s been great so far. This is a big move for me and everything has been going well so far. The boys have been very welcoming, the fans have been great as well, and I’m delighted to be part of this family now.”

Afolabi is a versatile forward capable of playing through the middle or on either wing, but his new “family” haven’t been particularly welcoming on his big day, producing possibly the most brutal response there is – they simply don’t care about or want the youngster.

Spurs fans urge Fernando Llorente to snub Manchester United move

Tottenham Hotspur fans have urged Fernando Llorente to avoid making a move to Manchester United this summer.

His deal at Spurs expired at the end of the season and he has yet to commit to fresh terms in north London or anywhere else for that matter.

Llorente, of course, enjoyed an exceptional season in 2018/19 as the club reached the Champions League final.

He scored the winning goal in the quarter-final second leg against Manchester City and also played a key role in the comeback victory over Ajax in the semi-final.

Overall, Llorente scored eight goals in all competitions in 2018/19 and he could now be on his way to Old Trafford in a shock move.

But Spurs fans have urged him to reject their advances.

Manchester United getting Douglas Costa as part of Lukaku deal would be a huge coup

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United would like Juventus to include winger Douglas Costa as part of a swap deal with Romelu Lukaku.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that Lukaku is set for an exit from Old Trafford this summer, and that Inter were in pole position for the Belgium international’s signature.

However, The Daily Mail claim that Juventus are very much interested in battling their Serie A rivals for Lukaku. The report adds that following suggestions that Paulo Dybala was reluctant to be involved in such a deal, United have turned their attentions towards his teammate Costa.

It further suggests that whilst the Brazilian is similarly hesitant to leave the Bianconeri, he could have his “head turned by the star-billing United are willing to afford him”.

A star winger

In his time playing for many of European football’s biggest sides, including Bayern Munich and Juventus, Costa has proven himself adept at performing on the big stage – he has grabbed 61 goals and 89 assists in his career so far.

The Brazilian has in general struggled to nail down a first-team spot since leaving Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk though, but has always offered glimpses of the incredible qualities he has to offer.

The 28-year-old is pacy and direct with incredible dribbling, and would offer United something that they sorely lack; a left-footed winger cutting in from the right-hand side. Mason Greenwood has shown promise of potentially filling that role, but is still raw, untapped potential at this stage in his career. Costa however, would give United a Champions League-quality wide-man.

Despite featuring so little for Juventus last season, Costa still managed relatively decent numbers. In the league, the 28-year-old averaged 1.8 dribbles and 1.2 shots per game, and offered the Old Lady something different in games with his one-on-one ability. Signing for United would give the Red Devils a genuine game-changer, who simply needs an opportunity to revive his career.

Aston Villa fans discuss Orjan Nyland’s future

[ad_pod ]

Orjan Nyland is back in pre-season training with Aston Villa ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

The 28-year-old joined Villa from FC Ingolstadt last summer and made 23 appearances for the English club last term.

Nyland was very much the club’s number one goalkeeper before picking up an Achilles injury, which required surgery and ultimately ended his season.

Lovre Kalinic was signed in January with the view to becoming the new first-choice goalkeeper, but Jed Steer ultimately secured the gloves for Dean Smith’s side.

Kalinic has been linked with a move away from Villa Park, though, and the recently promoted outfit are said to targeting a swoop for Stoke City’s Jack Butland.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

It remains to be seen what happens with Nyland moving forward.

But it seems that a number of Villa fans have lost confidence in the Norway international.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the club’s supporters can be seen below:

Dominik Szoboszlai can become Aaron Ramsey’s replacement at Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

According to Football.London, RB Salzburg’s highly-rated prospect Dominik Szoboszlai is a target for Arsenal this summer as Unai Emery’s side look to sign a replacement for Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey.

What’s the word?

The report claims the Gunners have registered an interest in signing the midfielder as they look to replace Ramsey. It adds the north London side are one of a number of teams chasing Szoboszlai’s signature and that Salzburg could demand a fee in the region of £15m to prise him away.

Speaking to Football.London, Szoboszlai’s agent Matyas Esterhazy said: “I can confirm a number of the top Premier League clubs are interested in Dominik but at this point I can not confirm or deny specific clubs.”

A goal-scoring midfielder in the making

More than missing out on what Ramsey offers off the pitch, Arsenal will feel the effects of losing the Welshman’s development into one of the Premier League’s most dangerous goal-scoring midfielders.

The 2013/2014 campaign saw him net 16 times in 34 games and whilst he has struggled to break the ten-goal barrier consistently, his late runs into the box have been reminiscent of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, Szoboszlai played 29 times last season for Salzburg and posted some frankly unbelievable numbers for a teenager. The 18-year-old scored 11 times and provided a further ten assists from midfield and has a penchant for wonder strikes off both feet.

At 6ft 1in Szoboszlai certainly has the height to be an imposing figure in the middle of the park for the Gunners but there are question marks over whether he would able to handle the physical intensity of English football.

At international level, the prodigy became the youngest starter in Hungary’s history since 2006 in a 2-1 victory over Croatia earlier this year and also played a hand in the side’s win over Wales in Euro qualifying.

Indeed, Hungarian football expert Tom Mortimer said (via Football.London): “He’s the perfect playmaker or number eight. When he is allowed space he can do anything. He has an outrageous shot with both feet – thunderbolts, curlers, chips – he can do it all. He’s also got lightning feet, a wonderful passing range, great vision, super intelligence.”

At £15m, Arsenal could potentially have a star for the future and it may not be too long before Gunners fans can well and truly forget the pain of losing a midfielder like Ramsey.

Mor possesses one El Ghazi trait that should be putting Aston Villa off

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…According to The Sun, Aston Villa are considering a move for Celta Vigo’s Emre Mor this summer.

What’s the word?

Signing a winger seems to be a huge priority for Villa in the transfer window. They’ve been linked with a number of wide players already after Joe Lolley, Said Benrahma and Harry Wilson all caught their eye.

Last season, the Villans struggled from wide areas barring Anwar El Ghazi’s 12 goal contributions. The likes of Andre Green and Albert Adomah rarely provided much impetus, finding the net just five times between them.

But as their search goes on, they now look as though they’re hot on the heels of another individual who can play on the flanks.

The Sun suggests that they’re considering Turkey international Mor, but Norwich and Sheffield United are also chasing him.

Stay away

At the age of 21, Mor is a fabulous young talent and the fact he was able to secure a move to Dortmund when he was just 18 is evidence of that.

However, his career has never taken off after a number of rather unproductive years.

Since 2016, he’s scored just two senior goals in 50 appearances, failing to find the back of the net at all last term.

But it’s his attitude that’s the main issue.

The Sun claim that disciplinary issues have hounded his career to date and Celta Vigo seem to be so fed up that he could leave for free. Marca, meanwhile, posted an article last year saying that his club saw him as more of a problem, than a solution.

Back in 2016, Mor posted a tweet about his attitude, claiming that he was simply different.

It’s a trait that can be compared to one of their current wide players too. Last summer when El Ghazi signed on loan for Villa, there were similar fears over his attitude.

French football journalist Jeremy Smith described that it was one of his main weaknesses and some of his inconsistent performances throughout 2018/19 were perhaps a result of the Dutchman’s approach to the game.

He has gone on to flourish since, but if you couple Mor’s poor performances in recent years with his problematic mindset, it’s difficult to see him having much of an impact in the Premier League.

After all, he’s failed in both the Bundesliga and La Liga already. Villa shouldn’t be considering him.

Leigh Griffiths’ return should send shockwaves around Celtic

Great news for Celtic fans as Leigh Griffiths backs himself to flourish under Neil Lennon’s management after overcoming health issues.

Time to rejoice: the mighty Griffiths is making his return to Scottish football.

The striker has sadly been missing since December after taking a break from the sport to address some personal issues.

But the fan favourite has recently returned to proceedings and is apparently doing everything he can to get back into shape for the start of the next campaign as Celtic look to build on last year’s success.

Griffiths is keen to add to his already whopping 104-goal tally for the Hoops by helping the club get their hands on nine-in-a-row.

He said to Celtic TV (via The Sun): “Is the hunger still as strong as ever? It’s probably more so now.

“From where I’ve been in December to now, it’s night and day.

“Hopefully when I pull that jersey back on and step onto the pitch I’ll be firing in all cylinders.

“It’s been a tough few months, double training sessions every day. I’m on the home straight now and not long to go before pre-season.

“I’m hoping to come back a lot fitter than the previous start to the campaign.

“Being in the gym near enough every day gives me that platform to get fitter and when we come back on the 17th I’ll be raring to go.”

It’s great stuff, it really is.

While we wouldn’t necessarily say the club have been detrimentally missing Griffiths this year – given just how well they have performed in the domestic competitions – there are definitely some things he could improve in the squad.

Not least giving Celtic a bit more firepower in Europe, the only arena they are yet to dominate.

With just one recognised quality striker in the squad now, Odsonne Edouard, since the departed Timothy Weah returns to Paris this month, Griffiths is needed back now more than ever.

He needs it, the fans want it to happen and the rest of Scottish football are surely cowering.

Celtic fans, how excited are you for the return? Do you feel like you could have achieved more with the Griffiths at your disposal? Let us know in the comments below…

West Ham: Salomon Rondon is the striker the Hammers need

When Salomon Rondon joined Newcastle on loan at the start of the season, it seemed to be quite an uninspiring signing.

The Venezuelan international was underwhelming during his time with West Brom from 2015 to 2018, scoring just 24 goals in 108 Premier League appearances for the Baggies, which is why it was a surprise when Rondon became a talisman for Rafa Benitez this season.

The former Zenit striker had his best season in England, named Newcastle’s Player of the Year after his contributions kept the northeast club in the Premier League for another season, and with West Brom failing to gain promotion from out of the Championship, plenty of teams are keeping tabs of the target man, including West Ham.

According to the Northern Echo via the Daily Star, Manuel Pellegrini is keen to get business done early this summer and with attackers such as Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez likely to this transfer window, the east London side are in need of strikers, and Rondon fits the bill perfectly.

With a release clause of £16.5 million, the Venezuelan striker will be a relatively cheap signing for West Ham and coming off the back of an impressive season with Newcastle, it looks like Rondon has finally found his feet in the Premier League.

Unlike fellow Hammers target Aleksandar Mitrovic, Rondon would bring much-needed experience to the team that are in need of a leader in the attack, and the West Brom man can bring that if Pellegrini moves in quick for a striker that many of West Ham’s rivals will be after for this summer.

West Ham fans, would Rondon be a good signing this summer? Let us know!
