Pundit admits Martin Dubravka injury is big blow for Newcastle

Martin Dubravka is set for an extended period on the sidelines through injury and it comes as a big blow for Newcastle United, according to Steve Howey.

The goalkeeper has yet to be involved this season and Magpies boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that Dubravka will be out of action for another eight weeks after undergoing foot surgery during the summer.

Dubravka, who played every minute of Slovakia’s Euro 2020 campaign, has been Newcastle’s first-choice shot-stopper for a number of years.

Having made the permanent switch from Sparta Prague following an impressive loan spell at St James’ Park, the 32-year-old has gone on to make 103 appearances for the Tyneside club.

Dubravka’s early-season absence, along with second-choice goalkeeper Karl Darlow’s battle with Covid-19, has resulted in academy product Freddie Woodman featuring between the sticks in every fixture so far this term.

But former Newcastle defender Howey concedes his former employers will miss Dubravka’s experience.

He exclusively told Football FanCast: “It’s a big blow and bad news about Dubravka.

“There’s nothing you can do about it. Newcastle have just got to deal with it and try to do the best they can.

“Sometimes a player’s misfortune is another one’s opportunity and this is a huge opportunity for Freddie Woodman to stake his claim.”

Nuno green lights Winks exit from Spurs

According to a Tottenham Hotspur source at Football Insider, midfielder Harry Winks is now in talks to join a Premier League rival.

The Lowdown: Spurs in major overhaul…

Since managing director Fabio Paratici arrived in north London, there has been no shortage of transfer activity in and out of Tottenham.

Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil have both officially arrived at the club while Erik Lamela, Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Juan Foyth have all departed N17.

Now, a Spurs source has shared yet more news on their outgoings this summer.

The Latest: Winks in exit talks…

As per FI, midfield man Winks has been told he will be a fringe player under Nuno Espirito Santo this season and is in talks to join a Premier League rival this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Nuno has even personally green lit the transfer and Winks could now leave before next month’s transfer window deadline.

Negotiations are ‘underway’, as per this report, as Tottenham look to complete another permanent sale following the flurry of outgoings this summer.

While Spurs value the 25-year-old at around £30 million, it is believed they may have to accept a lower bid.

The Verdict: Boost for Spurs?

Depending on how Spurs fill the hole left behind by Winks’ possible departure, this could be a further boost for Tottenham if they manage to finalise a sale.

The Lilywhites are in a sell-to-buy hole but have their sights set on more defensive additions as well as the acquisition of someone to partner Harry Kane up front.

Offloading Winks for more profit could be a necessity if Paratici wishes to strengthen even more this summer.

Bradley hands Celtic update on Scales

Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley has offered an update on Celtic target Liam Scales.

What’s the talk?

Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley has revealed that Celtic target Liam Scales now has a “decision to make” on his future and that he is expecting a transfer to go through ‘soon’.

He told the Independent:

“We’ve all spoken openly from the start. There’s his thinking and our thinking; both clubs have dealt with it really well.

“He’ll definitely be involved in the first one (Flora Tallinn first leg) and hopefully the second. I’m not sure where Liam’s end is at.

“Our stuff is tied up. I’d imagine with the window closing at the end of the month, it’s getting there. If not after Tallinn, it will definitely be soon.”

The Hoops have reportedly agreed a £600k deal with the Irish club, with Scales now poised to complete a move to Parkhead in the coming days/weeks.

Exciting times

This update could potentially excite Celtic fans hoping to see more activity in the transfer market from their side. Bradley’s comments indicate that an official announcement is not too far away for the centre-back, who will seemingly play his last game for Shamrock Rovers this week before heading down to finalise a switch to Scotland.

It is a difficult one to make judgements on in terms of whether or not he would be a good signing for Celtic, as the data available on his performances is minimal. However, the 23-year-old would arrive at the club with a fair bit of pedigree behind him, with six caps for Ireland’s under-21 side and appearances in the Champions League and Europa Conference League for Shamrock this season.

A review from the Irish Examiner explained how he could fit in at Celtic. They wrote: “He’s always been good on the ball. He’s a very brave player who will take the ball in dangerous areas of the pitch. His speed has improved, which is a crucial attribute to have in modern football, and he is more aware of potential danger.”

This suggests that, at the very least, he will be able to step out with the ball and progress Ange Postecoglou’s side further up the pitch. He could take on Kristoffer Ajer’s role in that sense, by driving with the ball in possession and allowing the Hoops to transition between defence and attack more effectively.

So, whilst it is hard for fans to be certain that he will be a success at Celtic, there are some promising signs on paper that he could be a shrewd addition to the squad. Therefore, the news that he could be closing in on a switch to Scotland could excite the optimists among us.

Yorkshire fight in tough conditions

Yorkshire, handed a lemon at start of play when they were sent in to bat under dull skies, made perhaps most of a jug of lemonade out of it. They did quite well to pass 300 with three wickets still in hand

Yorkshire, handed a lemon at start of play when they were sent in to bat under dull skies, made perhaps most of a jug of lemonade out of it. They did quite well to pass 300 with three wickets still in hand, but even so a number of their batsmen made a good start before losing their wickets when they should have been well set for greater deeds.Lancashire won the toss, as they had done on Wednesday in the FP Trophy, but wild horses probably wouldn’t have persuaded them to bat first again in similar conditions: a gloomy overcast sky promising movement in the air and threatening rain at any moment. So, they gratefully put the home side in, and for some time were able to put them under severe pressure. An opening batsman’s lot is not a happy one in such circumstances, as Joe Sayers discovered, had he not been aware of it before. Sajid Mahmood gave him a torturous time, including two strong appeals for lbw, before winning the third decision from the umpire in his second over, off a full-length delivery, without a run on the board. His opening partner, Adam Lyth, fought with great determination, in company with the watchful but more aggressive Anthony McGrath. He played a Gower-like cover drive to reach double figures and it was a disappointment when, after just over an hour at the crease, and having done most of the hard work, he was strangled down the leg side off Mahmood. Opposite Mahmood was Dominic Cork, finally back from injury, and bowling well without earning a wicket. One or two of his appeals, though, marked him down as another possible candidate for .Jacques Rudolph joined McGrath and, with conditions somewhat eased, they put together a useful stand, with Rudolph particularly adept in forcing the ball through the off-side field off the back foot. Very soon after lunch, though, McGrath played a loose stroke outside the off stump and was caught at the wicket off the returning Mahmood for 45.Andrew Gale, once settled, impressed with two consecutive off-side boundaries off Cork, and the pair added 77 before both were out in quick succession. Rudolph, pushing forward, was caught at the wicket for 66, while Gale played a poor shot, slicing a drive to backward point for 32. Adil Rashid survived a confident appeal for a catch at the wicket second ball, and this proved to be a crucial decision, one way or the other; had he gone, Yorkshire would have been in serious trouble at 177 for 6.As it was, after tea he settled down with Gerard Brophy to put on 79 in a crucial partnership. Brophy, especially, played some risky strokes early on, but he survived and reached his 50 off 66 balls. Finally he edged Mahmood, again, to the keeper, departing for 59 to leave Yorkshire on 256 for 6.Rashid continued to bat impressively, bursting forth every now and then with a fine stroke, especially the cut to beat backward point, and is in danger of becoming a batting rather than a bowling all-rounder. He made 43 in confident, perky style before pushing forward to Gary Keedy and providing wicketkeeper Luke Sutton with his fifth catch of the day.Tim Bresnan made a rather shaky start but hung on well to fight another day, while Richard Pyrah faced seven balls and hit a single and two fours off Steven Croft. Mahmood, with four wickets, was the best bowler of the day, but the supporting seamers were rather insipid and a couple of chances went down.At the end of the second day, when Lancashire have performed with the bat, it should be possible to tell just how full Yorkshire managed to fill their jug. A crowd of over a thousand throughout the day shows that a Roses championship match, on a weekday and in discouraging weather, still holds some magic for the Yorkshire public.

Cullinan offers public apology after Test withdrawal

Gauteng and South African batsman Daryll Cullinan has issued a public apology over his refusal and subsequent withdrawal from the South African team to play against Australia in March this year.At a news conference, called at short notice, at the Wanderers, Cullinan said, “I regret the circumstances and I could have handled the situation better. I’d like to apologise to the team, cricket supporters and the United Cricket Board for bringing the game into disrepute and I’d like to reconfirm my commitment to the game. I would love to serve South African cricket in whatever capacity they deem fit.”Cullinan added that he still wanted to apologise, in person, to the nationalteam and that he would find the right moment to do so.The 35-year-old and veteran of 70 Tests also confirmed he was available forboth Test and one-day sides of the future. In March 2002, Cullinan, recovering from a knee injury and a lack of form, was recalled to the South African side after four successive Test defeats. With Pollock a doubtful starter there were rumblings that he might even takeover the captaincy if Pollock failed a late fitness test. Then, on the eve of the Cape Town Test, Cullinan withdrew from the team and flewback to Johannesburg. United Cricket Board of South Africa, Chief Executive Officer, Gerald Majola announced that Cullinan had withdrawn from the South African team in Cape Town after the UCBSA was unable to meet certain demands made by the player.”Unfortunately, Daryll insisted that we give him nothing less than an ACategory UCB contract until 2003 for him to play in this match instead ofthe Test match fee which is paid to non-contracted players. The UCB policystates that a player can be offered a contract in the middle of the seasonafter he has played two Test matches or six one-day internationals in thatseason. Daryll does not fit those criteria. Daryll also demanded that he begiven that contract until the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Our current playercontracts expire at the end of April and we are not in a position to make anexception for Daryll,” Mr Majola said. After touring the West Indies with the South African Test team the prevoiusyear, Cullinan withdrew from the side ahead of the one-day series and flewto England to take up a contract with Kent. In terms of this contract,Cullinan was not available for South Africa’s two Test matches againstZimbabwe in September and his contract lapsed. At the time, Cullinanindicated that he would be prepared to play for South Africa on amatch-to-match basis. As it turned out, a knee injury cut short Cullinan’s time with Kent, but hewas not fit enough to play against India in November and was not selectedfor the tour to Australia. He captained the South African A team againstAustralia at the end of April, making 86 in the first innings to win himselfhis Test recall. On his return to Johannesburg, Cullinan was suspended from playing anycricket by the Gauteng Cricket Board pending an inquiry into his conduct. This meant that Cullinan missed the SuperSport Shield match against NorthWest at the Wanderers. In May 2002, Cullinan issued the following statement:

“I regret, that despite complying with every request made to me by the UCBsince September 2001, including:

    • Submitting to and passing a UCB-sanctioned fitness test with a view tosecuring a contract;
    • Committing myself to play five-day and one-day cricket for South Africauntil the end of the World Cup;
    • Representing and captaining South Africa A;

the UCB has refused to offer me a contract and has further failed to provideany reasons for this refusal. I furthermore wish to confirm that I received no indication whatsoever as to what match fees, if any, would be paid to me for my participation in the Newlands Test match. All I required was to be treated in a manner equal to the other seniorplayers.I wish to thank all of you who have supported me and have been just asexcited as I was with my recall. In conclusion, I would like to wish the South African team every success forthe upcoming Test match.”

Cullinan’s public apology comes at a very opportune time. With the currenthiccups in the South African middle order, his experience and techniquecould well be what the selectors are looking for. Whether they will take thechance of selecting him is another matter. It is however evident that Cullinan is still determined and committed tocontributing to South African cricket. With the World Cup less than a hundreddays away, he could still feature in the national set-up.

Some at Spurs still like Roberto Martinez

Tottenham Hotspur are said to still remain keen on Roberto Martinez…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, who delivered an update into their managerial search to supporters on Twitter and claimed that the Belgium head coach was the favourite amongst some of the Spurs board.

He wrote:

“Martinez favourite in some quarters … but been no contact lately.”

Last month, there were reports suggesting that the 47-year-old was making a ‘huge play’ to become Daniel Levy’s next manager in North London and that he was on his initial shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho, alongside Julian Naglesmann and Brendan Rodgers.

Forget Nuno

This is just the latest twist in the calamitous manager saga and is yet another uninspiring name to be mooted with the vacant role.

There are also claims that the club are closing in on ex-Wolves boss Nuno Santo, who left the Midlands outfit by mutual consent at the end of last season, a candidate that many have been opposed to on social media with #NoToNuno trending on Twitter at one stage last week.

Forget about Nuno, this would be worse.

Martinez, who is somehow in charge of the no.1 ranked international side, has an appalling record in the Premier League, winning only 81 of 265 matches (30.5%).

By comparison, Mourinho was sacked having won 52% of his games in charge of Spurs, whilst his fellow Portuguese left Molineux with a win rate of 48%. Even Christian Gross won 33% of his matches in charge.

Furthermore, his last stint in the top-flight ended on a sour note. He promised so much at Goodison Park but delivered so little as Everton regressed under his tenure.

According to Jonathan Wilson at Eurosport, his problems were “systemic” and had no real sign of ever being fixed, whilst he has also been deemed “stubborn” and “pathetic” in the past, too.

Much of the Spaniard’s work for Belgium, particularly in terms of player development, cannot really be attributed to him as it’s the likes of Pep Guardiola that has transformed Kevin De Bruyne, for example.

The fact that Martinez still sits high on the shortlist of many at the club must be hugely worrying news.

At least Nuno has more recent success, guiding Wolves to a place in the Europa League in their very first season back in the big time. He may not be a hit with the fans but he’s evidently a far better option than Martinez.
