Newcastle transfer news on Vlahovic

Newcastle United have reportedly now joined the transfer race to sign Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: A man in demand

With the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Juventus all reportedly keeping a close eye on Vlahovic, it is clear that the Serbia international is a man in high demand.

He has scored no fewer than 12 goals in just 14 games in total over all competitions so far this season, and has even chipped in with three assists (Transfermarkt).

The crazy thing is that Vlahovic is only 21 years of age, and so promised to become one of the hottest strikers in Europe over the next few years.

The Latest: Newcastle in race

As per Corriere Fiorentino (via Sport Witness), the St. James’ Park faithful have now joined the race to sign Vlahovic, although it will not be easy for them to meet Fiorentina’s demands.

The Serie A club currently reportedly want a transfer fee of €80m (£67.1m) for his signature, which could even be a stretch for their new mega-rich owners.

The Verdict: Get it done

The North East club may have to do a lot to sell Vlahovic the long-term vision on Tyneside, given that they currently find themselves in a relegation battle.

However, if a deal is to be done, then the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium must be the first ones to pounce, given his high demand.

Described as ‘really crazy’ by former Manchester City striker Valeri Bojinov back in March, Vlahovic is a player with fire in his belly, and so would surely be hungry for success in the Premier League.

His six-foot-three frame makes him a beast in both boxes, as emphasised by him winning 2.2 of his aerial duels per match in the Serie A so far this campaign (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, Vlahovic would certainly be a statement signing by the Magpies, that could then help attract other big names to the club.

Ball changes upset Alam

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has expressed unhappiness over two ball changes by Sri Lanka during the first day of the third Test. The second replacement helped the hosts as the Pakistan batting collapsed at the SSC.Having been put in, Pakistan were cruising at 285 for 4 on a slowish track when Sri Lanka, who had till then made no impact with the second new ball, called for a replacement ball as it had gone out of shape after 3.4 overs. The replacement ball swung alarmingly and Pakistan lost three wickets for two runs in eight balls to end the day at 289 for 7.”If you analyse the first two Test matches and this one, everytime the ball was changed it has worked,” Alam said. “Today they changed it twice and I don’t want to say anything about it, but it’s just one of those things. The first ball they changed didn’t do anything and they certainly got the right ball and it did the trick. It’s part and parcel of the game.”I would have been much happier if we were 280 for 4. [Shoaib] Malik and Misbah [ul-Haq] were playing very well and had everything under their control. Cricket is full of surprises and full of uncertainties. Everyday you see something different and something new you still keep on learning.”Alam said that had Pakistan won the toss they would have batted first as well. “No doubt about that,” Alam said. “We’ve selected two spinners in the side and when you do that you don’t want to bowl first. Sri Lanka won the toss and put us in and they have a different idea of the wicket. We scored almost a hundred runs in each of the three sessions but we’ve lost about three wickets more which we shouldn’t have.”We need another 100 runs and if we have something like 400 or something near to that we will have a good game on our hands. This wicket will turn for [Danish] Kaneria. Especially in the first half, some of the deliveries the left-armer [Rangana Herath] bowled turned a little bit and bounced as well. The wicket looks very dry and bowling last will help.”Opener Khurram Manzoor, who missed out on a maiden Test hundred by seven runs, said he was upset at playing the wrong shot. “I did my best, but I’m disappointed in a way that this would have been my first Test hundred,” Manzoor said. “My job was to stay at the wicket and see the shine off the ball. I am also disappointed the way [Mohammad] Yousuf got out. It was uncalled for.”Manzoor and Yousuf put on 167 for the third wicket before Manzoor was caught behind off Chaminda Vaas and seven runs later Yousuf was run out attempting a second run on an overthrow.”This is the first time I’ve played with Yousuf he encouraged and supported me talking between overs,” Manzoor said. “I enjoyed batting with him. As a senior player he did a good job to ensure that I was comfortable in the middle.”

Four-captain plan 'misinterpreted' – Buchanan

John Buchanan, the coach of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, has said his four-captain policy for his team had been “misinterpreted”. He said that he will not select a squad captain but a leader for each match.”My four-captain policy has been misinterpreted by most people and I would just like to clarify it,” Buchanan told the Johannesburg-based . “Basically I will not select a squad captain but will select a captain for each match.””That captain will make all the normal decisions such as field placings and bowling changes. However, with a unique, fast-flowing and hectic game like Twenty 20, I feel there should be more decision-makers, more captains in the process to succeed, so one has to think differently.”Buchanan had unveiled his plan last month during a press conference in Kolkata at which the present captain Sourav Ganguly was also present. Ganguly later said that he was not fully convinced about the idea, which also drew flak from other coaches and former players.Buchanan was excited about the talent in his squad for the 2009 IPL. “I really believe we have a balanced, exciting squad for the IPL,” he said. “We will have Chris Gayle for seven games, Brendon McCullum for the whole series, while we also have Brad Hodge, who I believe is one of the best Twenty20 players in the world.”

Newcastle: Kennedy talks up Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse is a ‘realistic and ambitious name’ that could feature on Newcastle United’s shortlist, Liam Kennedy writes for Newcastle World.

The lowdown

It was only in August when Ward-Prowse signed a new five-year contract at Southampton.

But Newcastle have become ‘one of the most powerful football operations on the planet’ following the completion of their takeover.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has declared Ward-Prowse the best free-kick taker he’s ever seen.

The Englishman needs to score one more direct free-kick to tie with Sebastian Larsson (11) at the top of the all-time Premier League list.

Ward-Prowse actually haunted Newcastle recently when he scored a 96th-minute penalty to snatch a draw for Southampton at St James’ Park.

The latest

Kennedy picks out Ward-Prowse as part of a list of players the Magpies ‘could be looking at’.

He says the addition of the ‘set-piece specialist’ would bring a ‘different dimension’ to the Newcastle squad.

Kennedy also notes that Ward-Prowse hasn’t missed ‘a single minute of football in back-to-back seasons’ so should offer ‘energy’.

The verdict

Ward-Prowse is a very good player who’s still only in his mid-20s, but it’s hard to imagine he would have signed such a lengthy new deal unless he was very happy at Southampton.

Of course, the Newcastle project will be tempting, but he’s on track to become a legend at St Mary’s.

And we should also recognise that his new deal puts the Saints in an immensely strong negotiating position, even in the face of Newcastle’s wealth.

Newcastle claim on Bruce

Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has now made a claim involving Steve Bruce after a behind-the-scenes Newcastle United revelation.

The Lowdown: Bruce holiday

As per The Athletic, some people within St. James’ Park ‘weren’t impressed’ by Bruce taking part of the international break off to go on holiday.

When asked by The Chronicle about it after their 4-1 loss away to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, the former Red Devils central defender was left fuming.

The Latest: Campbell on Bruce

Speaking to Football Insider, former Everton and Arsenal striker now pundit Campbell has claimed that Bruce will now be under serious pressure because of his holiday:

“Bruce’s job is definitely under pressure right now.

“The thing is, if Steve Bruce had won a couple of games nothing would have been said.

“But the fact of the matter is Newcastle have been struggling and they want their manager there. The fans want the manager to be in every day rectifying the problems. It is not a good look for some people.

“Listen, I don’t know how long it was planned for but it is the way things go sometimes.

“At the end of the day, you cannot live your life by the press. The press are going to have a go at him. Unfortunately, it is part and parcel of the job.”

The Verdict: Terrible timing

It certainly was not a good idea by Bruce to take a holiday given the situation that the North East club currently find themselves in at the moment.

They sit in 19th spot in the Premier League table with no wins and just one point from their opening four games, with Leeds United at home to come on Friday night (Premier League).

Instead of taking a holiday, he should really have been working with the players not picked for international duty to see how they can get the three points they so desperately need now against Marcelo Bielsa’s team.

Nonetheless, Bruce will no doubt be under the spotlight in front of the Toon Army come Friday’s match.

West Ham: Fans react to Pablo Fornals comments

Many West Ham United fans have been delighted on Twitter, after comments emerges from star man Pablo Fornals suggesting that he would be open to retiring with the Hammers [Hammers News].

Over the course of his time in East London, it is fair to say the Spaniard has made a notable impact after a slow start, not only in terms of his playing style but his strong rapport with Irons fans.

In particular, 2020/21 was a season to remember for the 25-year-old, registering ten goal contributions in 36 appearances; six goals and four assists [Transfermarkt].

Now, his stock has been elevated to an all time high at the London Stadium, following a recent interview with Spanish outlet La Media Inglesa on YouTube.

Bose gives Bengal a headstart

ScorecardBengal seem to have hit on a winning formula in the Ranji Trophy Plate League: bundle out the opposition cheaply, take a significant lead and then let the bowlers complete an innings rout. The method worked in their previous two games, and the process was set in motion against Assam by Ranadeb Bose’s second first-innings’ five-wicket haul in as many matches.Assam, three points behind second-placed Bengal – both have a game in hand compared to Group B leaders Madhya Pradesh after their first-round clash was postponed – chose to bat, but they perhaps did the opposition a favour. After 12.2 overs, they were reeling on 15 for 5: one batsmen bowled, two leg-before and two caught behind off Bose’s bowling.Dhiraj Goswami made a quickfire 21-ball 17 to push the scoring along, but it was only wicketkeeper K Saikia’s 31 at No. 10 that took them to 86. He was last man out, giving Ashok Dinda his third wicket for the innings.Bengal’s batsmen, though, faltered during their reply, with a triple-strike from left-arm spinner Anand Katti reducing them to 42 for 4 before Manoj Tiwary and Wriddhiman Saha took them into the lead. Saha fell for 28, but Tiwary was unbeaten on 40 as Bengal ended the day on 118 for 5.

Sibley disappoints despite Derby draw

Considering the absolute mess that Derby County are currently in away from the pitch, the results that Wayne Rooney’s Rams side have been picking up in the Championship so far this season have been rather impressive.

Indeed, while a win, two draws and a loss are by no means groundbreaking returns in normal circumstances, considering the 35-year-old manager has just 17 fit outfield players to pick from, the fact that Derby are currently sitting comfortably in midtable is a rather remarkable feat.

The club’s most recent result, a 0-0 draw with a very solid Middlesbrough side, while perhaps not being the most exciting game in Derby’s history, was yet further evidence that Rooney is indeed a very steady hand on the wheel of a rather unpredictable ship.

However, while there were a number of impressive performances in the Derby ranks on Saturday, there was one player who caught the eye for all the wrong reasons – Louie Sibley.

Indeed, over his 64 minutes on the pitch, the 19-year-old managed just one shot, completed 11 of his 16 attempted passes and failed to find his man with his one attempted cross and his two attempted long balls.

The £2.7m-rated midfielder also gave away possession of the ball on 12 occasions, lost all 11 of his duels and touched the ball a grand total of 25 times – 12 times fewer than the Derby County goalkeeper, Kelle Roos.

These returns saw the England U20 international earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 5.9, ranking him as the worst performer of any player to feature in the match.

As such, while Rooney does not exactly have a wealth of options waiting to replace Sibley in his squad, should the 19-year-old wish to keep his spot in the 35-year-old’s starting XI going forwards, he will certainly have to up his game in his side’s Carabao Cup clash with Sheffield United on Tuesday night.
