Otago made it eight losses in a row in the Championship

The issue for Otago in their State Championship match with Canterbury at Molyneux Park in Alexandra was obvious from the outset.Otago were 75/5 and desperately needing a substantial partnershp to give their attack something to bowl at in the fourth and final innings of the game.Jordan Sheed did score a valuable and neat 53 but with only 114 to chase for victory, Canterbury did it with ease, losing only one wicket and therefore winning outright by nine wickets.Otago have almost without exception fared worse in their second innings of matches this season than the first, and today was no exception as Canterbury dismissed them for a paltry 131. Only Sheed and Craig Pryor (24) producing anything of any substance. The Canterbury attack never really looked venomous but Wade Cornelius in getting six for 30 from 16 overs bowled line and length and deserved his figures. He had match figures of 10 for 66.Chris Harris took three for 29 from 19 overs while Ryan Burson took one for 41 from 12 overs.Canterbury with only 114 to get for victory made no race of it and got there with nine wickets in hand, Robbie Frew scoring a patient but assertive 73 not out. Otago’s only wicket taker was Pryor with one for 11.Canterbury deserved to win the match against an Otago side which has batted abysmally for most of the season and because of this has recorded its eighth successive loss in State Championship matches. If anything the Otago bowling looked slightly better than Canterbury’s – Kerry Walmsley bowled with little good fortune while David Sewell collected a bag of seven wickets in the first innings.

Bowler helps Somerset bat out for a draw

Peter Bowler’s sound defence frustrated Kent’s victory hopes on the finalday at Taunton as the match with Somerset ended in a tame draw. The 37-year-old veteran hit a typically solid 87 off 188 balls, sharing acrucial fourth-wicket stand of 135 with Mark Lathwell, which occupied 51overs.They came together in the first over of the day when Jamie Cox wasbrilliantly caught behind by the diving Paul Nixon off Matthew Fleming, having added only four to his overnight 59.Somerset were 114-3 and still 45 runs behind. But Lathwell, still looking tore-establish his reputation since a year off with injury in 1999, showedglimpses of the form that brought two Test appearances back in 1993.Applying himself with great determination, he matched Bowler’s solid defencewhile occasionally giving a reminder of his stroke-playing ability in making58 before falling lbw to Fleming.Kent’s skipper struck again in the same over, clean bowling Rob Turner for aduck, on the way to figures of 4-74.But the pitch offered little in the way of assistance to any type of bowlingand Peter Trego, promoted in the order following his 32 in the firstinnings, again showed his talent with the bat. After Bowler had finally departed to Nixon’s seventh catch of the match, theEngland Under-19 bowler went on the attack to hit eight fours in his 43.Somerset were 334-7 when Cox declared to end the match at 5.20pm. The homeside took seven points and Kent ten.

Hendrie concerned by Mings’ Villa form

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie believes Tyrone Mings has not been at his best this season.

While Villa’s record when it comes to goals conceded in the Premier League has been decent, they rank high in the errors leading to goal category.

Mings has contributed to one of those errors leading to goal, while some of his performances in general have come under scrutiny from supporters.

And it appears such has not gone unnoticed by Hendrie, who simply feels that the 28-year-old’s level has dipped this campaign.

On £24.3m-rated Mings, the ex-Villa player told TT  in an exclusive interview:

“Mings hasn’t been at his best this season – there’s no doubt about it. [Ezri] Konsa’s been the best centre-half out of the two.”

Indeed, while Mings has perhaps had some struggles this season, Konsa has absolutely thrived, with manager Dean Smith describing him as “Mr Consistent” earlier in the campaign.

With all of that being said, it would probably be unwise to write off Mings based on some shaky performances in one campaign.

He has been a regular at the club since initially joining on loan from Bournemouth back in 2019, helping his side to win promotion to the Premier League and retain their top-flight status.

2016 – 0,92
2015 – 1,39
2014 – 1,23
2013 – 1,21

Everton fans fume at fixture scheduling

Many Everton fans have been left to fume as Patrick Boyland relayed a fixture update for May from the Goodison Park faithful.

As per a tweet from The Athletic journalist, the Merseyside club will play Aston Villa at home on Saturday 1st May at 8pm and West Ham United away on Sunday 9th at 4:30pm, with a home match against Sheffield United just two days later.

It puts a big strain on travel for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, and this is not to mention that their game in hand away at Villa has still not been rescheduled, meaning that the Toffees are going to be suffering a mass fixture pile-up at the end of the 2020/21 term as they look to chase qualification for European competition for next season.

This could have a huge impact on a squad who are already struggling with injuries, so it’s no surprise to see fans flocking to respond on Twitter.

Everton fans on fixture scheduling

These Blues fumed upon reading the update, with one EFC supporter even going as far as to claim that it was ‘ridiculous’:

“Never knew that, ridiculous. And these 8 o’clock games on a Saturday need sacking off!”

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

Mark Douglas has shared a promising revelation on the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

Replying to a fan of the St. James’ Park faithful in a Q and A session for The Chronicle, the journalist has claimed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) have been ‘totally committed’ to their proposed deal with Mike Ashley for more than a year and he has spoken to them on this subject.

However, they do not want to be involved in the legal side of things, and would much rather leave that to Ashley and his team.

Newcastle takeover reassurance

It will certainly come as a relief to many members of the Toon Army that the PIF remain committed to the deal, given that they are currently not at the negotiating table due to the ongoing arbitration between the club and the Premier League.

A positive result for the North East club in their pending case against the top flight should be a step in the right direction, and may well clear a pathway for them to come back.

Given that the Tyneside club are almost certainly safe from being relegated from the top flight down to the EFL Championship as well, that should not be a problem either, and so there is still hope that the bid can still be revived, providing that the right pieces of the jigsaw puzzle all link together.

Celtic dealt injury blow over James Forrest

Celtic’s hopes of ending the season in the strongest way possible have been dealt an almighty blow.

The Bhoys went crashing out of the cup last weekend and they will now finish a season without a trophy for the first time in a decade.

What didn’t help last weekend was that James Forrest was ruled out of the clash.

Speaking in the build-up to the game John Kennedy revealed that they’d leave it late in terms of his fitness. However, he failed a late test and missed the defeat to Rangers.

Unfortunately, they will be without Forrest again on Wednesday when the Hoops face Aberdeen.

It would appear that the winger is still yet to recover from an injury problem but if there is one consolation, he should be back at the weekend.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, the interim manager commented: “Out with that, James Forrest will still be missing for this midweek, but will hopefully be fine afterwards.”

Celtic may not have anything to play for but after the dismal way in which they lost to their biggest rivals a few days ago, being without Forrest again is a bitter pill to swallow.

They can only lust after his goal-scoring antics and ability to create. Odsonne Edouard and Mo Elyounoussi missed golden chances to score last Sunday, opportunities which Forrest surely would have lapped up.

He scored 16 times last season, providing 22 assists for his teammates in the process. With Forrest suffering from an injury since September, missing a player with that kind of record has clearly had a big say in the title race.

Forrest has already made a pretty big impact since coming back into the fray, scoring against Falkirk in the cup and against Livingston.

To have him absent from the squad again just about sums up their torrid campaign. Kennedy and the supporters must be cursing their luck.

He is such an imperative part of what Celtic have become in the last decade; they need him fit and firing as soon as possible.

Pundit questions Sancho’s quality

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who made 561 appearances for Wolves, has questioned if Jadon Sancho would have the quality to get into Manchester City’s side.

It comes after City beat a Borussia Dortmund side, without Sancho, 2-1 thanks to a 90th-minute goal from fellow academy graduate Phil Foden.

Sancho was sold to Dortmund when just 17-years old and he has not looked back becoming a Bundesliga star as well as a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squads when fit.

Speaking on if Sancho has the required quality to be a regular at Man City and how he’s done well for himself in the Bundesliga, Bull told FFC:

“It’s one of them where you look at the quality in Man City’s side and think would he get in that team? They couldn’t see anything in him so they took advantage of Dortmund in selling him.

“Fair play to the lad because he might go to a bigger club and then an even bigger club, but it’s Man City so they can do what they want.”

Since joining Dortmund in 2017 Sancho has set the Bundesliga alight proving age is certainly just a number because his output is amazing, 46 goals and 60 assists in 130 games.

Last summer, the winger was linked with Manchester United for a whole transfer window only for him to remain with Dortmund.
