Bailey named Australia's T20 captain, Hogg recalled

Cameron White has been dumped as Australia’s Twenty20 captain and replaced by George Bailey for the two matches against India next week

Brydon Coverdale23-Jan-2012Cameron White has been dumped as Australia’s Twenty20 captain and replaced by George Bailey for the two matches against India next week. And Australia’s selectors have announced the surprise recall of the 40-year-old spinner Brad Hogg, who made a T20 comeback this summer and has been the standout slow bowler in the Big Bash LeagueIn a major shake-up eight months before the ICC World Twenty20, the new selection panel under John Inverarity has sent a clear message that the T20 side needed refreshment. Australia made the final of the 2010 World T20, but since then they have lost seven matches and won only two, and sit fifth on the ICC rankings behind England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and South Africa. The appointment of White as captain when Michael Clarke retired from the format last January was made by Andrew Hilditch’s selection panel with a view to building towards this year’s World T20, to be held in Sri Lanka in September. However, White made just 55 runs at an average of 7.85 in the BBL this season and Inverarity’s panel has made the change with at least four matches on Australia’s schedule before the World T20.Bailey, the captain of Tasmania and a team-mate of White at the Melbourne Stars, has not been in outstanding form either, having scored 114 runs at 19. However, he was viewed by the selectors as the right man to lead the side, with David Warner his vice-captain, while the Test vice-captain Shane Watson was not considered for the two games against India due to his ongoing injury problems.”The Australian T20 team has been ranked a rather disappointing sixth in the world and we’ve certainly considered that the team needs refreshment,” Inverarity said in announcing the squad in Melbourne on Monday. “It would be fair to say the national selection panel has been discussing this T20 squad for six or seven weeks.”If you look at [Bailey’s] record as captain … I’m of the view that Tasmania have done particularly well in recent years because of the leadership they’ve had, the well-defined leadership of Daniel Marsh and … then George has taken over. Last season they won the Shield under George, the year before they won the one-day competition under George. The results are there.”He’s widely respected throughout Australia. Those who play with him regard him very highly as a captain and as a leader. We’ve seen from Michael Clarke’s leadership, he has done very well not least because of his astute decision making on the field and George certainly has that too.”The decision means Bailey, 29, will play his first match for Australia in any format next week, and he will do it as captain. Bailey has been part of an Australian squad in the past – he was called up for the ODIs in New Zealand in early 2010 when Clarke returned home for personal reasons – but did not win a cap.Australia T20 squad

George Bailey (capt), David Warner (vice-capt), Travis Birt, Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Hogg, David Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Clint McKay, Matthew Wade (wk)

“It has [come out of the blue] in some ways but it’s something I feel like I’m ready to do and I’m very excited by,” Bailey said. “I think once you have been captain and played in the team for a little while, any time you’re on the field you’re always thinking. I haven’t captained during this Big Bash but even so I’ve always been thinking about what I’d be doing in similar circumstances, who I’d be bowling and field placements and things like that. I don’t think that part of you ever goes away.”When he walks out as leader for the T20 at Sydney’s Stadium Australia next Wednesday and the match at the MCG two days later, Bailey will be in charge of a new-look side. The fast-bowling allrounder James Faulkner will be in line for his debut, while the batsman Travis Birt has earned a recall nearly two years after his last international appearance. But the big talking point, besides the captaincy, was the recall of Hogg, whose left-arm wrist-spin has been a major reason the Perth Scorchers have made the BBL final. Hogg retired from all cricket four years ago but made his T20 comeback this summer, and Inverarity said if all went well, Hogg would be part of Australia’s squad at the World T20 in spinning conditions in Sri Lanka this year.”In my conversation with Brad it was that it would be the World Cup and that if he was selected our interest with him wouldn’t go beyond that,” Inverarity said. “Of course it could change. But that’s the general intention … Two months ago we probably weren’t thinking about Brad Hogg. [BBL] games have changed when he’s come on to bowl. He has been outstanding.”The inclusion of Hogg meant there was no room for Steven Smith or Steve O’Keefe, two slow bowlers who had been part of the T20 side in recent months. Xavier Doherty was the other specialist spinner named to take on India. Brett Lee, Clint McKay and Daniel Christian will round out the attack, while Matthew Wade was not surprisingly named as the wicketkeeper.Michael Hussey was not named in the squad but Inverarity clarified that his exclusion was a workload issue. Hussey almost singlehandedly blasted Australia into the final of the World T20 in 2010 with a brilliant innings in the semi-final, and although he has not played a T20 international in a year and a half, he is expected to be part of the squad when Australia play two matches in the Caribbean in late March.”Mike is being rested for this,” Inverarity said. “Mike has had a pretty gruelling schedule of Test matches – Sri Lanka, South Africa, New Zealand and India. I had a chat to Mike in Perth about a week ago and we’re looking to give him a little bit of a break here, and probably in the early stages of the ODIs so he comes out fresh. We’re also keen to try some of these younger players. But at this stage there’d be no doubt that Mike Hussey would be playing in the T20s in the West Indies.”

Attacking Surrey build imposing lead

Surrey 294 and 166 for 2 v Leicestershire 183
ScorecardGareth Batty struck a crucial blow for Surrey to remove James Taylor and then the quick bowlers took over•Getty Images

Surrey are on course for their first Championship victory of the season after a dominant display against Leicestershire led by their pace attack and followed up by the exciting Jason Roy. The visitors could only manage 183 as they were greeted by a rare overcast day, but when Surrey batted again in the sunshine they had few issues extending the lead to 277.While Chris Tremlett continued to cause problems, and Mark Ramprakash registered an effortless half-century to consolidate the home side’s position, this was a good day for Surrey’s youth. Firstly Stuart Meaker took 4 for 43 with some seriously quick bowling, then Roy, 20, gave a glimpse as to why the Surrey cricket manager, Chris Adams, calls him a “mini KP”.There was certainly a confidence and swagger about him at the crease despite a first-innings failure. Roy isn’t an opener by trade, but was selected by Rory Hamilton-Brown to try and solve the top-order dilemma. He won’t be seeing off the new ball in traditional fashion and when offered anything loose (or sometimes not that loose) he threw his hands into the shots. It’s a style that comes with risk but also brings reward. He took four boundaries off an over from Nadeem Malik with a series of stand-and-deliver drives, the second of which brought up his half-century from 40 balls. There was a certain irony that Roy’s innings ended playing defensively when he was given caught behind equal with his highest first-class score. With Roy taking his chance and Ramprakash back in the line-up if will be a tight squeeze fitting in Pietersen, not so much against Cambridge UCCE next week but more so for the Championship match against Essex. Hamilton-Brown is currently the least productive of the batsmen and fell in this innings trying to attack Henderson. A captain’s job is always tougher when runs aren’t coming, but winning this match will help ease concerns.Play was delayed until 12.25 due to morning rain – the first for about a month in London – and the heavy atmosphere helped juice up an already green pitch. It was always going to be tricky for Leicestershire’s batsmen against a strong seam attack. That will have made it even more disappointing that James Taylor was bowled through the gate by Gareth Batty’s second ball in the last over before lunchCredit must go to Hamilton-Brown for a smart piece of captaincy. It would have been very easy to stick with his quicks, but there’d been turn for Claude Henderson yesterday and a nice piece of flight from Batty, who had just been driven through cover, drew Taylor into a mistake. It wasn’t the best moment for Taylor with James Whitaker, the England selectors, watching from the stands.Leicestershire’s innings was seriously undermined after the interval as three wickets fell for two runs. The rapid Meaker had Jacques du Toit and Will Jefferson caught behind; the first with an excellent delivery which nipped away and the second thanks to a flat-footed drive which undid some determined work from Jefferson. Meaker, meanwhile, continued his strong start to the season which was interrupted last week by a hamstring tweak.Paul Dixey, the debutant wicketkeeper, then failed to get on top of Tremlett’s extra bounce as he fended a catch to gully. As he had been on the first evening Tremlett was excellent, hitting a taxing length and making the most of the good bounce in the surface. Again he was handled sympathetically by his captain and not overworked. The follow-on was looming until Resistance came from Henderson and Wayne White who counterattacked in a positive seventh-wicket stand as the sun finally managing to burn through the clouds. Dernbach was the most expensive of Surrey’s attack, striving a little too hard on a surface that required control, but he provided the breakthrough with a trademark slower ball that confounded Henderson and took off stump before adding White as his second scalp.Meaker deservedly wrapped up the tail and showed the value of having someone express to attack the lower order. There aren’t many really quick bowlers in county cricket and if Meaker continues to make strides greater honours may await.

Newcastle Saudi kit leaked

Newcastle United journalist Luke Edwards has been left raging over news of a bizarre Newcastle kit that will reportedly be on show next season.

The Lowdown: Saudi kit

As shared by Edwards for The Daily Telegraph, there has been an image leaked in the last 24 hours of the St. James’ Park faithful’s proposed third strip for the new season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It presents green sleeve and neck lines with the badge and manufacturer’s logo also coloured in green, on a pre-dominantly white shirt. It is very reminiscent of what the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) national team play in.

The Latest: Edwards reacts

Taking to Twitter, Edwards gave his instant reaction after hearing of the leaked shirt, calling it a ‘stupid’ idea:

“The Saudi third kit idea for NUFC was a stupid one and, quite honestly, the club deserve all the criticism coming their way over it.”

The Verdict: Needs rethinking

It is normal to have a secondary colour on away and third kits not usually seen in the club’s traditional colours, but colouring the badge and manufacturer name green is not needed and not subtle at all in light of controversies in the KSA.

If they were to keep those aspects in their traditional colours, and merely have the sleeve and neck outlines green, then it could be deemed an acceptable strip which both appeals to the new audience in the Middle East and does not detract from the legacy of the club in the North East.

Nonetheless, you can see where Edwards is coming from, and the club have to prepare to face criticism if they go through with the idea.

Newcastle team news vs Man City

Liam Kennedy has been left buzzing over some Newcastle United news involving both Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson.

The Lowdown: In training

Earlier this week, the St. James’ Park faithful posted pictures of Trippier and Wilson training with the rest of the squad after their respective injury setbacks.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This came before Eddie Howe confirmed that the latter could make a return away at Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, while they will have to make a late call on Trippier.

The Latest: Kennedy buzzing

Taking to Twitter, Newcastle World journalist Kennedy gave his instant reaction to the pictures of both of them in training with the squad:

“Now this really is things you LOVE to see.”

The Verdict: Big boost

It is certainly a big boost to see both players back in training after so long out, especially now given the news that they could feature on Sunday.

They are two key players in the team, as evidenced by the fact that Trippier currently ranks as their best performer in the top flight so far this season, while Wilson remains their top scorer with six goals (WhoScored).

Having them back will only make the Magpies stronger going into the rest of the run-in, as they hope to finish the campaign off strongly before digging into the summer transfer window.

Zulqarnain Haider was unlikely to play the fifth ODI

Officialdom in Pakistan has finally made contact with Zulqarnain Haider in a continuing bid to find out the exact nature of events prior to the wicketkeeper’s sudden fleeing of Dubai for London

Questions have been raised about the timing of Zulqarnain Haider’s exit from Dubai•Sang Tan/Associated Press

Officialdom in Pakistan has finally made contact with Zulqarnain Haider in a continuing bid to find out the exact nature of events prior to the wicketkeeper’s sudden fleeing of Dubai for London. The PCB chairman Ijaz Butt spoke with Haider on Thursday and Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Pakistan’s high commissioner to the UK, also met with the 24-year-old.Though Haider told a local news channel that support and assistance had been offered by Ijaz Butt, a board spokesman said the purpose of the communication had been solely “to find out what made him do what he did.” The PCB’s three-man fact-finding committee – comprised team manager Intikhab Alam, the security manager Major Najam Javed and a senior board official Subhan Ahmed – has also been trying to establish contact, without success so far.Questions, however, are still being asked about Haider’s actions five days after the event. He insists he fled because of threats he received after turning down the approaches of an unidentified man who wanted him to be involved in fixing the last two ODIs against South Africa. In an interview with the fourth ODI, in which his unbeaten 19 helped Pakistan home in a nail-biter. Taffazul Rizvi, the board’s legal advisor, asked why Haider waited until Monday before deciding to leave; the latest the approach could have occurred was Thursday (the fourth ODI was on Friday), which means he waited four days before leaving.”In our culture, when are you worried about your family’s safety, you run to their side,” Rizvi told the . “Whereas he has run to a different country.”Reports have also emerged indicating Haider was on the verge of being dropped from the one-day line-up. The influential Urdu daily claimed in a front page report, citing team sources, that Haider was not inked in to be a part of either the fourth or fifth ODI. Instead, in a bid to find a better balance to the side, the team management was keen on doubling up Umar Akmal as a batsman-wicketkeeper in his place. But an ankle injury prevented Umar Akmal from playing the fourth ODI and though he fulfilled that role after Haider’s departure in the last ODI, claims he would have done so regardless of Haider’s status. The report suggests that Haider had been told of his ‘resting’ the evening before the last ODI.Haider, who has sought asylum in the UK and retired from international cricket, also said that he handed over two letters he received in his Dubai hotel room to the ICC’s anti-corruption unit. ESPNcricinfo understands, however, that the ICC at least has not received any documents yet from the player.

Man United make approach for Richarlison

Manchester United are yet to appoint their new manager to take over from Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford, although it seems that the lack of clarity on the managerial situation has not deterred the club from making moves for prospective new signings this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Sport Witness, the Red Devils are one of two clubs to have approached Everton with interest in signing star forward Richarlison this summer.

The report suggests that United have shown interest in the Brazilian’s situation at Goodison Park ahead of the upcoming transfer window, but the club are still mapping out their plans before engaging in negotiations.

He signed for Everton for a whopping £50m in 2018 but it’s not known how much he’ll cost on this occasion. Either way, in the words of Sky Sports, it’s certainly a “shock approach.”

Bye-bye Rashford

With Marcus Rashford currently holding a Transfermarkt value of £63m despite his struggles this season, and amid reports of his rumoured desire to leave his boyhood club this summer due to a lack of game-time, it could be the perfect opportunity for United to upgrade by signing Richarlison, who was dubbed “cold” by his former Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti over his finishing instincts.

Everton are currently in a vulnerable position, with their Premier League status under threat as they endure a relegation battle in their remaining games of the season. If they were to drop into the Championship next season, it could be an ideal chance for the Red Devils to snap up the 24-year-old at a lower price.

Richarlison has scored 49 goals and bagged 13 assists in his time at the Merseyside club, with a goal involvement every 2.3 games. When you compare the Toffees forward to his United counterpart Rashford this season, there is no doubt that the Brazilian would improve the forward line at Old Trafford.

According to Soccerment, the £110k-p/w attacker – who was hailed as a “warrior” by team-mate Seamus Coleman – has scored more goals, contributed more assists, been more successful in his dribbles (54%) and completed more crosses (19%) on average this season compared to the United star.

Ultimately, the Red Devils need to make a decision on their managerial appointment before they commit to making new signings this summer, but the prospective capture of Richarlison could make a huge difference to the front three at Old Trafford if they were to part ways with academy graduate Rashford.

Celtic: Maguire makes FFP claim

Financial expert Kieran Maguire has reacted to the incoming changes in Financial Fair Play regulations and the impact they may have on Celtic and Dermot Desmond.

The lowdown: Changes afoot

European football’s governing body UEFA announced that over the coming years clubs will only be permitted to spend 70 per cent or less of their total revenue on player transfers, agent fees and wages, albeit the changes will come into force incrementally.

There are also reported plans to adopt a ‘Swiss model’ to the UEFA Champions League whereby two additional places could be awarded based on historical standings and increased revenues handed out to those sides in the competition.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-3/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As the Hoops aim to earn an automatic spot in the group stage amongst Europe’s elite for the first time since 2017/18 by lifting the Scottish Premiership title, these new rules could have an impact at Parkhead.

The latest: Maguire delivers promising verdict

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire, a finance expert and contributor for Sky Sports suggested that Desmond and co. will fare well under the new FFP guidelines.

“Celtic are in a very strong position with regards to the new rules.

“They don’t have issues in terms of wage control. Celtic’s wages to turnover ratio in the three years pre-Covid was 58 per cent, 58 per cent and 67 per cent.

“They have three years to taper their outlay accordingly as well because the new rules, while radical, are being phased in gradually.

“Uefa’s calculation also takes into consideration not the whole staff, but only the playing staff and the first-team coach.

“Celtic are certainly in a strong position to deal with that. They don’t often make losses either, so there won’t be an issue there.”

The verdict: Good news

As ever with anything involving finances and changes in regulations, there is always a fear that it could adversely impact off-field matters.

However, such is Maguire’s expertise in this area that Celtic supporters can breathe a sigh of relief that not only will the club circumvent any issues, but life at Lennoxtown and beyond could even improve.

As the board weigh up whether or not to back Ange Postecoglou in the upcoming summer transfer window, financial foresight like this and the potential incoming windfall from Champions League qualification may further bolster the budget.

No final deu tudo certo.

Tive momentos no Fluminense, Napoli, fora… A gente convive e acaba tendo suas projeções no clube. Isso é passado. Vivemos o presente.
