Goal share exit update out of Spurs

According to Goal, there has been an exit update out of Tottenham Hotspur as some news emerges on loanee goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

The Lowdown: Gollini will ‘almost certainly leave’…

Reports in the last week heavily tip Tottenham’s second-choice to depart north London and head back to Serie A at the end of this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Fabio Paratici and co apparently have a €13 million (£11m) option to buy Gollini but Corriere della Sera’s print edition (via Sport Witness) say this isn’t an option for Spurs due to his lack of playing time.

As such, they now claim he will ‘almost certainly’ leave N17 and return to parent his club Atalanta in June.

Backing this update and sharing news of their own, Goal have brought a development.

The Latest: Gollini talks held…

According to their information, Serie A giants Lazio have already moved for Gollini ahead of the summer – meeting with the player’s agents and the club holding talks in ‘recent days’.

It is believed they are focused ‘above all’ on signing Tottenham’s current shot stopper who Goal also back looks certain to leave.

They claim Gollini is highly unlikely to reach the 20 appearances needed to trigger an obligation-to-buy clause in his deal and add that Spurs aren’t willing to exercise another option to buy him outright.

The Verdict: Unfortunate…

While Spurs supporters won’t be losing sleep over Gollini’s exit due to his lack of playing time, it is unfortunate that the Italian has spent so much of this season on fringes.

The former Aston Villa man hasn’t been handed many opportunities to prove himself by Antonio Conte despite his terrific form at Atalanta over the past few seasons.

Serie A football journalist Carlo Garganese lauded Gollini as a ‘big’ and ‘imposing’ shot stopper at the Gewiss Stadium but Tottenham’s faithful have hardly got to capture a glimpse of those labels.

Tottenham defender Eric Dier also called the 26-year-old ‘amazing’ whilst praising his energy in Hotspur Way training, leaving some to maybe wonder why Conte has never given his compatriot the opportunity to impress more regularly.

Keane, Kenny & Holgate Everton worst

Everton suffered a cruel 1-0 defeat at home to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday evening thanks to a late Phil Foden goal.

A couple of deflections took the ball into his path before he slotted past Jordan Pickford from close range, which ended up being the winning goal after a VAR check for a handball from Rodri in the box controversially did not result in a penalty kick for the hosts.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-2/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It was a spirited performance from Frank Lampard’s men, although in truth some players were better than others on the night. The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst performers were for the home side at Goodison Park:

Mason Holgate (6.4)

With a 6.4 overall rating given, Holgate ranked as the Toffees’ third-worst player.

The defender could not stop the cross coming in from City’s flank for the goal, and in general he struggled at times, albeit against world-class opposition.

He lost out on three of his duels in total and also failed to block any shots, while he was dribbled past twice and ended up losing possession 12 times.

Jonjoe Kenny (6.2)

Admittedly joint-worst in terms of rating among Everton players (6.2), Kenny ranks in second here as he personally did not make any individual errors.

However, the 24-year-old was guilty of losing four duels, while he also made no dribbles, interceptions, key passes, crosses or accurate long balls in the match. Kenny was also dribbled past twice and gave the ball away nine times.

Michael Keane (6.2)

Keane was also given a 6.2 rating, but he ranks as the Blues’ worst performer given his individual mistake which led to Foden’s goal.

Aside from that error, the former Burnley defender made no tackles and lost the ball nine times on what was a night to forget for him personally.

Manchester United: Talks held with Mauricio Pochettino

Manchester United have held talks with Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino, according to The Daily Star.

The Lowdown: Four-man shortlist?

The Red Devils appear to be making a head start when it comes to searching for Ralf Rangnick’s replacement in the summer.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag had ‘positive’ discussions with the United board last month, who also have Pochettino, Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique on their radar.

It now looks as if Pochettino, who doesn’t currently have an agent, has become the next target United have spoken with ahead of the club’s meeting with Leicester City this evening.

The Latest: Pochettino talks

The Daily Star shared a story on Thursday evening, revealing that the club are making rapid progress in their pursuit of a new long-term manager.

Senior United figures have spoken with Pochettino this week after talks with Ten Hag. The former Tottenham boss is keen on the Old Trafford position and has the backing from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Verdict: Two-horse race?

Although Lopetegui and Enrique have also been name-checked as potential candidates, it does feel as if it is starting to become a two-horse race between Ten Hag and Pochettino.

Pochettino has plenty of experience in the Premier League with Southampton and Spurs, however, it seems to be a matter of time until Ten Hag takes over a new side after two more approaches for the Dutchman following his initial United interview.

If United are after a completely fresh start, then perhaps the Ajax boss could be better suited, but if the Red Devils feel experience is key, then Pochettino may well be their man – only time will tell.

Spurs can find new Dembele in Wijnaldum

Tottenham Hotspur could look to secure Georginio Wijnaldum in a deal that would see Tanguy Ndombele go in the other direction…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to bring the £55m flop to Paris Saint-Germain on loan, with the ex-Liverpool star thought to be part of the discussions.

90min have since reported that the Dutch midfielder would be keen on a temporary return to the Premier League and it’s believed his representatives have made that clear to the Lilywhites’ hierarchy.

Wijnaldum nearly joined Spurs in 2016 but opted for a move to Anfield from Newcastle United instead.

The 31-year-old is now valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt after his high profile free transfer to the Ligue 1 giants during the summer.

Dembele 2.0

With a number of midfielders seemingly on the chopping block in north London – Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli could join Ndombele in departing – it makes sense to see Spurs target a new signing in the role.

Wijnaldum’s vast experience across the Premier League and Champions League would make him a very astute signing, even despite his lack of game time at the Parcs des Princes this campaign.

The midfield veteran has managed only 977 minutes in the league so far but has a winners medal in both the aforementioned competitions, where he has played in over 250 matches.

In the past, Reds supporters have likened the Holland international to that of former Spurs midfielder Mousa Dembele, due to the pair being somewhat an “unsung hero” in their respective sides at one point in the past.

Wijnaldum’s energy and athleticism make him a hard man to dispossess in the engine room, which merely draws further similarities between the pair.

“He’s an incredible person.  His energy is incredible, he has lungs for days. You can tell when he has the confidence, he’s really unbeatable and very hard to play against,” ex-Liverpool forward Ryan Babel once said of his fellow countryman.

Once dubbed a “machine” by The Athletic’s James Pearce, the box-to-box dynamo has averaged 1.7 attempted tackles, two dribbles and 0.9 key passes per 90 minutes throughout the course of his career, via WhoScored, making him a very intriguing option under Antonio Conte indeed.

Spurs could well find their new Dembele in a move for Wijnaldum this month.

Viv Richards offers batting consultant role for India

Vivian Richards has offered his services as a batting consultant to the team to help them deal with their weakness against the short ball

Cricinfo staff16-May-2010After India’s early exit from the ICC World Twenty20, the former West Indies legend Vivian Richards has offered his services as a batting consultant to help the the team deal with their weakness against the short ball. Richards, one of the most destructive hitters in the game, said he would like to pass on tips to teams like India on how to deal with aggressive fast bowling. For the second time in succession, India bowed out of a World Twenty20 without registering a win in a single Super Eights game, making it six such losses in a row since England last year. India won both their group games but lost to Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka in the second stage, where teams exploited their shortcomings against the rising deliveries.”I could be a good consultant where batsmanship is concerned and especially where you have such aggressive fast bowling. I can be a little help at some point to teams,” Richards told , the Indian news channel. “I’m available, maybe they (India) will call me sometime to know how to handle such aggression.”Richards pointed to the match against Australia at the Kensington Oval, where India struggled to cope with the pace and aggression of the seam trio of Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes and Mitchell Johnson. India wilted to 50 for 7 by the 11th over and looked in no position to mount the tall target of 185.”The Australians did put the wind up India that particular day. India has to get to the grips with that,” Richards said. “What India can learn from the past is to get some practice against the real aggressive stuff.”Richards’ suggestions are similar to that of former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, who recommended that the Indian batsmen head to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and learn the basics of facing fast bowling on bouncier pitches. Like Gavaskar, Richards did not blame the IPL for under-preparing India for the World Twenty20, where the quality of cricket was higher.”India came into the tournament with the most T20 matches, taking in the IPL factor. I don’t think it’s an excuse in any way. I was in South Africa in 2007 where they won the first T20 tournament and they played magnificently,” Richards said. “Sometimes the ball is in your court sometimes it’s not. What I think India’s got to do at this stage is to see the way the Australians bowled at them and hopefully try and come to grips with the bounce and make the necessary adjustments.”

Scotland, Netherlands line up Bangladesh ODIs

Netherlands and Scotland will be playing a one-dayer against Bangladesh in June

Bangladesh and Netherlands will do battle on neutral territory in Glasgow•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Two further one-day games have been added to Bangladesh’s tour of England, Ireland and Scotland, with Netherlands and Scotland announcing that they will play a one-dayer each against the touring side in June. Scotland will play Bangladesh on July 19 in Glasgow, which will also serve as the neutral venue for the match against Netherlands the following day.Prior to these games, Bangladesh will be in Ireland, where they will play two ODIs at Stormont in Belfast on July 15 and 16.Richard Cox, the Netherlands board chief executive, believed the games would be an important benchmark for the sides. “This is an exciting opportunity to play an ICC Full Member in Scotland at the end of what will have been a long tour for the exciting Bangladesh squad,” he said.”This game will be a big test for our side and they will be relishing the opportunity to play Bangladesh whose footsteps we hope to follow in years to come. The game will come on the back of the ICC World Cricket League to be held in the Netherlands in June and we therefore hope to be well and truly ready for the challenge.”Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, said the team would be looking forward to the clash, scheduled after England’s visit on June 19. “These games are always a major test for our players and they will be relishing the opportunity to play Bangladesh on home soil,” he said.Richard Holsworth, the ICC Europe regional development manager, also welcomed the fixtures. “Bangladesh agreeing to play Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands in one-day internationals this summer is great news for Europe and these countries. Now that all three high performance countries have a number of professional contracted players it is a hugely important they have regular competition with the Full Member countries.”

Tired Harris savours solid debut

Harris said it was a strange feeling to be in the Australian dressing rooms celebrating a Test win, especially after a winter that included two knee operations

Brydon Coverdale in Wellington24-Mar-2010Ryan Harris has decided that it’s called Test cricket for a reason. Harris bowled 41 overs in his debut match, most of them into a Wellington wind that was so strong that it tipped over the pitch roller. He was in the field for four days in a row, which is tough for anyone, especially a man who had played only one first-class game for the summer.Little wonder that Harris was stiff and sore the day after Australia secured victory, but despite having only three days between matches he is certain he’ll be refreshed in time for Saturday’s second Test. Taking six wickets for the match and grabbing three important victims on the final morning helped his mood considerably, although the team’s celebrations were subdued.”I am pretty tired,” Harris said on Wednesday. “I haven’t played many four-day games [this year] and to do it in those conditions, they were pretty tough conditions with the wind and everything. To make New Zealand follow on and field for nearly 200 overs was a bit of a test. I got through it, I’m a bit tired now, but I’ll be right to go again on Saturday.”I looked after myself last night, so it’s a matter now of keep hydrating in the next couple of days and a bit of a run around probably tomorrow and another one on Friday and get the body moving, and I should be right. I had a couple of quiet beers but didn’t go too hard, none of us did because we have another big Test coming up.”Harris said it was a strange feeling to be in the Australian dressing rooms celebrating a Test win, especially after a winter that included two knee operations. Test cricket was a goal that appeared unattainable at the time, at least in the near future, but Harris has certainly made the most of his chance to wear the baggy green.”I sat last night having a chat with Dad and a few of the boys and we’ve spoken about the last few months and where I nearly was with my knee, and to be sitting there last night with the boys celebrating a Test win, it’s very surreal still,” he said. “I never thought I’d be playing Test cricket, put it that way. I’ve come a fair way and it’s a great feeling, all the hard work to put it all into this and get a baggy green. It’s awesome.”The immediate challenge for Harris is to back up his strong debut with a good performance in Hamilton, but the longer-term goal is to be in the mix for next summer’s home Ashes series. Harris is trying not to look too far ahead but can’t help pondering the possibility of playing in the battle for the urn.”It would be pretty awesome to play Ashes wow,” Harris said. “But that’s a long way ahead yet. I’m worried about the next Test, obviously, and then the World Twenty20 I want to be a part of and then hopefully go to England, so there’s a lot to go before that.”If I just keep performing and taking wickets and bowling well and making it hard for the selectors when the other guys come back to drop me, then that’s what I want to do. That’s what we’ve got to remember, there are still guys to come back into the team who have done really well – Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle. If I just keep performing well and make it hard for them to drop me, that’s what I want to do.”
