Taylor's action passes ECB test

Jack Taylor’ssuspension from bowling for England and in competitive county cricket because of an illegal bowling action has been lifted by the ECB with immediate effect. This follows a reassessment as permitted within the ECB regulations, carried out on 4 February 2014. This was subsequent to a period of remedial work undertaken by Taylor on his bowling action after an initial analysis in May 2013.Taylor, an offbreak bowler, had become Gloucestershire’s first-choice spinner before his season was abruptly interrupted by an investigation into the legality of his action. The Banbury-born bowler undertook much rehabilitation work in Gloucestershire as well as visiting the ECB’s national performance centre at Loughborough to seek advice from experts in bio-mechanical sports science.Gloucestershire’s director of cricket, John Bracewell, himself a former international offspinner, said: “This is great news and a lot of credit must go to Jack himself for the dedication and determination he has shown throughout what must have been a very tough time in his life.”I must thank our coaching staff. In particular, specialist spin bowling coach, Richard Dawson, who has put in hour after hour with Jack and Chris Bodman for his work on mind management. Lastly, thanks to the University of Gloucestershire for allowing us access to their first class 3D test facilities. Good job guys. Jack can now get on with his career.”

Duminy, du Plessis mark return with 84-run victory

JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis marked their return to South Africa’s national ODI team with a century and fifty respectively, to lead their team to an 84-run victory over Netherlands

ESPNcricinfo staff31-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJP Duminy scored an unbeaten 150 and Faf du Plessis’ hit a quickfire fifty on their return to international cricket after injury breaks, thus helping South Africa to an 84-run win in the one-off ODI against Netherlands in Amstelveen. JP Duminy had not played any competitive cricket since the Brisbane Test last November due to an Achilles tendon injury, while du Plessis was ruled out midway through the ODI series in March against Pakistan with back trouble.South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. Alviro Petersen was returning to the ODI team for the first time since January 2012, getting a call-up after Graeme Smith was ruled out of the upcoming Champions Trophy due to injury. Petersen was unable, however, to set his stall as he was dismissed early for just 6, edging to Peter van Borren off the bowling of Mudassar Bukhari. With the score on 38, fellow opener Hashim Amla was caught behind by Wesley Barresi off Paul van Meekeren.Any buoyancy Netherlands gained from those two wickets was soon overshadowed when Colin Ingram and JP Duminy dug their heels in to consolidate. The pair put together a match-changing 151-run stand for the third wicket over the course of 28.5 overs to help steady the innings and build-up to a voluminous ending. Ingram finally fell to Bukhari after being caught by Ahsan Malik for 82. Faf du Plessis was sent in next, and together with Duminy, who passed a 100 in the process, put on a further 152 runs in the remaining 13.1 overs. This was a critical partnership for South Africa, and ended up being a match-clinching one at that, as the duo went at 11.54 runs an over – prior to this the match was rumbling along at just over five runs an over. The final five overs of the innings produced 98 runs. A total of 16 boundaries, including 12 sixes, were hit in those latter overs by the pair. South Africa finally finished on 341 for 3.Netherlands started steadily enough, with the openers putting on 43 runs for the first wicket, before both batsmen were dismissed on the same score. South Africa continued to pick up wickets, and were firmly ahead all through despite Peter van Borren and Szwarczynski putting on 70 runs for the fifth wicket. With an asking rate escalating out of control, Netherlands simply had too much to do, as Borren fell two-runs shy of a half-century, and Szwarczynski missed out on what would have been a well-deserved maiden ODI ton. Netherlands eventually finished the innings on 257 for 9.

Pant points to 'gaps' created by injuries after LSG's playoff hopes end

“The way we planned the auction, if we had the same bowling [attack], the story would be different,” the captain said

ESPNcricinfo staff19-May-20251:18

Mukund: ‘Marsh and Markram have been a revelation’

Injuries to key personnel created to “lot of gaps” that played a part in LSG’s underwhelming IPL 2025. That was the captain Rishabh Pant’s assessment soon after his team was officially knocked out of the playoffs race by Sunrisers Hyderabad in Lucknow on Monday.Put in to bat, LSG made 205 on the back of half-centuries from openers Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, but saw that total – “at least 10 short”, according to Pant – being razed down by SRH with 10 balls to spare courtesy Abhishek Sharma’s six-laden 20-ball 59.”It couldn’t be the best season for us,” Pant said. “Getting into the tournament we knew a lot of gaps were there because of injuries. We decided we won’t talk about that, but it became difficult to close out those gaps.”Pant was seemingly referring to the prolonged absence of several core players. Left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan missed the entire season, while express quick Mayank Yadav, one of LSG’s prized retentions, spent most of the tournament on the sidelines. Mayank briefly returned but looked undercooked and was ruled out again with another back injury. Other big-money signings Avesh Khan and Akash Deep also struggled with fitness issues and joined the playing XI only midway through the season.”The way we planned the auction, if we had the same bowling [attack], the story would be different,” Pant said. “At the same time, this is cricket, things can happen. Sometimes they go your way, sometimes they don’t. Need to take pride in the way we’re playing. Need to look at the positives other than discussing more on the negative side.”When asked about the silver linings from LSG’s campaign, Pant said, “there’s enough firepower in the batting,” he said. “That’s the biggest positive. Even the bowlers, they were bowling in good areas but they were patchy, a little bit. We were trying to make the best of it.”We’ve been playing well in patches. In the first half of the season, the players did well, we tried to cover up all problems, but in the second half it became tougher and tougher to catch up against the teams doing well.”One bright spark for LSG was rookie legspinner Digvesh Rathi. The 25-year-old from Delhi impressed in his debut season of the IPL, picking up 14 wickets in 12 matches at a respectable economy rate of 8.08. On Monday, he returned figures of 2 for 37 and was LSG’s standout bowler.”Definitely the bowler Rathi has come up nicely for us this season,” Pant said. “The way he has bowled was really good to see. Rathi is one of the positives. There are many areas as a team we need to keep improving on to find ourselves getting better and better.”

A negociação mudou.

Tim Paine details invasive neck surgery, confident for Ashes return

Australia’s Test captain believes he made the right decision to go under the knife

AAP17-Sep-2021Australia captain Tim Paine is “extremely confident” of being fit for the first Ashes Test despite undergoing invasive neck surgery.A bulging disc had been causing the wicketkeeper pain in his neck and left arm, leading Paine to have an operation this week. Surgeons had to cut a hole in his throat to fix the issue. The 36-year-old will rest for two weeks before commencing rehabilitation to ensure he is fit to lead Australia against England at the Gabba on December 8.”Basically they’ve cut a big hole in my throat, moved my voice box over to the side, and gone in that way. It’s a less invasive way,” he told his SEN radio show.Related

Paine admitted he is “pretty sore” but is optimistic about his playing future after speaking to other athletes who have had similar operations.Former NRL and Wallabies star Matt Rogers and recently retired Melbourne AFL captain Nathan Jones were back up and running within eight weeks.”It was sort of getting to that touch and go stage where I either don’t get it done and take the risk that I’d be right through the Ashes, or get it fixed now,” Paine said. “Pretty happy with the decision after the surgeon had a look in there.”December 8 is the first Test and I’m extremely confident I’d be right to go before then.”I’ll hopefully get a Shield game in for Tassie before then and hopefully be on the winning end of a third winning Ashes would be something really special. I want to keep playing for Tasmania after my international career. To have it fixed and out of the way was the correct decision long term.”I’ve had plenty of doubters my whole career so it’s something that I’m used to; that’s alright, I’ll use it as motivation to get back out.”England have expressed serious concerns about the conditions the team will be forced to live under during the Ashes, creating doubt about the series going ahead as planned. But Paine believes the conditions will be nowhere near as bad as what the tourists are fearing.”The main stuff with the English guys is around the protocols with quarantine but we’re not asking them to do anything that we won’t be doing,” Paine said.”I think if we can get them out here they’ll realise the conditions during Australia’s Covid hubs are pretty good and nothing to worry about.”

Ali de Winter unveiled as new bowling coach

Ali de Winter, the Tasmania assistant coach, has been confirmed as the man to replace Craig McDermott as mentor to Australia’s bowlers, after beating Waqar Younis to the job

Daniel Brettig03-Aug-2012

Ali de Winter has been commissioned to “pick-up on Craig McDermott’s previous good work”•Cricket Tasmania

Ali de Winter, the Tasmania assistant coach, has been confirmed as the man to replace Craig McDermott as mentor to Australia’s bowlers, after beating Waqar Younis to the job.The choice of de Winter was likely from the moment Waqar confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that he had been knocked back for the position, with numerous other potential coaches under contract to other countries or provincial sides.Cricket Australia’s team performance manager Pat Howard, coach Mickey Arthur and captain Michael Clarke had taken a close look at de Winter’s ways of working during the recent ODI tour of the UK, on which de Winter impressed with his intelligence and affable nature despite the poor results of the team in losing 4-0 to England.Apart from working out how Australia’s bowlers managed to take only 13 wickets in four completed matches during that series, another of de Winter’s major objectives will be to help preserve Australia’s bowling resources. Injuries have become an unhappy recent tradition, its most recent example having Pat Cummins, James Pattinson and Ben Cutting all unable to take part in the current Australia A tour due to physical ailments.”We’re very pleased to have secured Ali’s services for the role from a wide field of international candidates,” Howard said. “Ali presented well on how he would manage the role on a day-to-day basis and has impressed through his work with bowlers such as Ben Hilfenhaus and Jackson Bird in Tasmania, and while he was the interim bowling coach on the recent tour to England.”We feel Ali has skills that will complement those of Mickey Arthur, Justin Langer and Steve Rixon and is well equipped to pick-up on Craig McDermott’s previous good work.”While de Winter’s ascension to the role may be defined as much by those who were not available for it as those who were – the likes of David Saker, Jason Gillespie, Damien Wright and Joe Dawes could not be considered due to their current employment – it should not be forgotten that he only narrowly lost out to McDermott last year.”I don’t think it is too complicated – it’s about having a strong work ethic, building good relationships and doing things like attacking the top of off stump in Test cricket,” de Winter said. “I am particularly excited to get this chance, particularly now as Australia has such a deep pool of fast bowling talent with 10-12 young bowlers featuring at the moment.”There is a great group of young bowlers coming through to complement the experienced names who are also performing well.”Like his fellow Tasmanian bowling coach Troy Cooley, de Winter was a modest first-class bowler, but set about learning how to get the best out of bowlers after his playing days ended. His work with Tasmania has been consistently strong since he became state bowling coach in 2007, resulting in a promotion to be Tim Coyle’s assistant while also coaching the Hobart Hurricanes in last summer’s BBL.He has been closely associated with the success of bowlers including Hilfenhaus, Luke Butterworth and more recently Bird, last summer’s Sheffield Shield player of the year and a member of the Australia A touring side currently in England.Hilfenhaus relied heavily on de Winter to correct flaws in his bowling action that emerged as he favoured an injured knee during 2009 and 2010, resulting in a wretched 2010-11 Ashes series. Reconfigured ahead of last summer, he emerged as one of the most incisive members of the bowling attack that routed India, and gave de Winter much of the credit for his resurgence.”He noticed my action had changed a little bit and realised what we needed to change to get back to where we wanted it. He definitely played a very big role in that,” Hilfenhaus said. “I personally find that he is very good technically to me, he understands the way I bowl pretty well, and he picks up things really easy.”Tactically he is very good as well, but for me personally it is more the technical side of things. I am sure he is having a look at everyone else’s actions as well and trying to find ways to help them improve. If I am doing things technically correct, that will help my chances at the other end, and some other people might be different.”Some people need to be told all these tactics about bowling and these sorts of things, someone like myself I need to be told to keep things technically correct to give myself the best chance to perform my skills. I rate Ali pretty highly and I’m sure once the other blokes have had a bit more to do with him, they’ll say exactly the same thing.”Other bowlers like Pattinson and Peter Siddle benefited greatly from McDermott’s simpler advice and guiding presence beyond the long on fence during Test matches, but by choosing de Winter, CA have decreed their view that he is the best man to carry on the Queenslander’s legacy.

Player strike 'a last resort' – Paul Marsh

Australia’s players have not ruled out industrial action if they cannot reach agreement with Cricket Australia over a new pay deal by the June 30 deadline

Brydon Coverdale04-Jun-2012Australia’s players have not ruled out industrial action if they cannot reach agreement with Cricket Australia over a new pay deal by the June 30 deadline. However, the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) chief executive Paul Marsh said the player union would prefer to roll the existing pay agreement forward if a deal is not finalised by the end of the month, instead of resorting to a player strike.Talks between the ACA and Cricket Australia have so far failed to resolve the issue of the players’ share of cricket revenue, which looms as the major stumbling block to a new memorandum of understanding (MoU). A new MoU was due last year but instead the existing arrangement was extended for another year as the parties could not agree on some matters, and discussions have been no smoother this year.At the weekend, reports emerged of the possibility that the players might even boycott the upcoming one-day tour of England or the ICC World Twenty20 if a deal was not reached. However, Marsh said that while the ACA was preparing for all eventualities, it was still hopeful of a resolution with Cricket Australia and failing that, a potential extension of the existing MoU.”That sort of stuff [a strike] is always an absolute last resort,” Marsh said on ABC Radio on Monday. “I think our preferred method here, and I don’t know what Cricket Australia’s position is, but our preferred strategy would be to keep rolling the current deal until we can reach an agreement. Nobody wants a situation where the players aren’t playing. But I guess it takes two to tango.”Where the story has come from over the weekend, the question was put to us are you preparing for a boycott or strike action… we’re preparing for everything. We’re not going to get to the 30th of June and say we haven’t got a deal, what do we do now? Our job is to make sure when that time comes, hopefully we have got a deal, that’s our absolute priority, but if we haven’t then we’ve got to be able to talk different options. Obviously we’ll take those options back to the collective player group and we’ll make a decision from there.”One issue that has held up discussions has been the move to a performance-based player payment model, although Marsh said the two parties had almost reached agreement. But the major point of contention is the make-up of the cricket revenue pool, which includes revenue streams such as media rights, sponsorships and gate takings, from which Australia’s players receive a 26% cut.”Cricket Australia pretty late in the piece have come to us and tried to take a couple of revenue streams out of that definition as well as turning one from what currently now a gross revenue definition into a net revenue definition,” Marsh said. “The amount of money at stake is pretty significant and I think for very reasonable reasons we’re not agreeing to that. At the moment it’s a little bit of a stalemate on that particular issue.”If you have a look at what players from a lot of the overseas type sports get it’s up over 50%. So we’re pretty reasonable in terms of what we’re asking for. If Cricket Australia want to start to unbundle all the revenue streams and say we don’t want you to have this one now … then we quite rightly should turn around and say we want more of the high-margin revenue streams.”The prolonged nature of the negotiations is affecting the ability of the state and Big Bash League teams to finalise their playing lists, for deals cannot be confirmed until the MoU is completed. That means a longer period of uncertainty for men such as Usman Khawaja, who has been linked with a move from New South Wales to Queensland but cannot yet sign a contract.Marsh conceded the state organisations were “screaming out” for a resolution and that the talks could be an unwelcome distraction from the business of preparing players for first-class and international cricket. However, he said he remained confident that an agreement could be reached before the end of the month.”The only thing I can go by is the history and historically we have always got a deal done,” he said. “I’m confident we’ll get a deal done this time but it does take two to tango and Cricket Australia, we need to understand what their intentions are. They’re firmly digging in pretty strongly here and equally we’re doing the same.”
