Southampton fans slam Adam Armstrong

Many Southampton fans have been slamming the performance of Adam Armstrong in their 4-0 loss at Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

The visitors almost immediately went behind to a second-minute Diogo Jota goal after some fine work by Andy Robertson, before the former Wolves winger got his second just after the half-hour mark.

Thiago and Virgil van Dijk added to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s misery by the full-time whistle, as his team endured a real drubbing at Anfield.

Armstrong was one Saints player who seemed to struggle throughout the game, losing out on two of his duels, while he also missed with four of his goal attempts and failed to record a single successful dribble or key pass (SofaScore).

The striker was guilty of losing the ball on 10 separate occasions, and the fact that he had fewer touches (31) than his own goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (37) (SofaScore) summed up how little impact he had on the match.

James Ward-Prowse must start vs Watford

After failing to beat Burnley in their previous Premier League game, which ended with a 2-2 draw, Southampton take on Watford at Vicarage Road in what is another big clash for the Saints, with the Hornets only two points ahead of them in the table and scoring five goals in their previous league outing against Everton.

On the chalkboard

Looking ahead to the match against the Hertfordshire club, one player who Southampton will have available and who we feel should be in the starting XI is captain James Ward-Prowse.

During Southampton’s 3-1 defeat against Chelsea earlier this month, Ward-Prowse was shown a red card and given a three-game ban for a challenge on Jorginho, which saw him miss the matches against Leeds United, Burnley and their Carabao Cup clash against the west Londoners in midweek.

Prior to that, Ward-Prowse had played every minute of Premier League action for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, proving just how vital he is for the club.

Now that the 26-year-old, who is currently earning £45k-per-week according to Spotrac, has completed his ban, we feel that Hasenhuttl should have no qualms over putting him straight back into his starting line-up to try and get all three points out of the game against Watford on Saturday.

Since making his senior debut for the Saints back in 2011 after working his way through their youth system, Ward-Prowse – who has been previously labelled an “exceptional” player by Stephen Warnock – has made 331 appearances for the Saints across all competitions, scoring 35 goals and providing 42 assists in the process.

So far this season, he has racked up an average of 1.4 shots at goal and 1.4 key passes per game in the Premier League, showing just how much of an attacking influence he has on the team, and that’s why we believe he could frighten Watford at the weekend.

Looking ahead to the match against Claudio Ranieri’s side, we feel that Ward-Prowse should definitely be in Southampton’s starting XI to see if he can add to the two goals he has under his belt already this season and give the Saints the best chance of getting three points and climbing further away from the relegation zone.

Primeira chance no time

Definição do time

Desbancar Lugano

Qadir steps down as chief selector

Abdul Qadir has resigned as Pakistan’s chief selector, barely six months into his stint. The move comes the morning after a dispiriting defeat to England in the ICC World Twenty20 in England, but it is believed that was not the spur for the decision.”Abdul Qadir has handed in his resignation to the chairman of the board and it has been accepted,” Salim Altaf, chief operating officer PCB, told Cricinfo. “No reason has been given to us by Qadir.”Wasim Bari, the board’s HR head, also confirmed that no reason had been provided by Qadir. “All we know is that he handed in his resignation and it was accepted,” he said. The status of the other members of the three-man selection committee, ex-Test cricketers Salim Jaffer and Shoaib Mohammad, is for the moment unaffected. “Only Qadir has handed in his notice,” Bari said.Cricinfo understands, however, that differences had arisen between the chairman of the board, Ijaz Butt, and Qadir. In particular, a recent selection committee meeting in Lahore to pick Pakistan’s A squad for their tour to Australia is said to have been pivotal in Qadir’s eventual decision.During the meeting, it is believed Butt and Qadir developed differences over the squad’s composition. One source said that Qadir had been irked by Butt’s less than tactful dealings with him and was disturbed by interference in selection matters. Butt is said to have taken serious objection to some of the selections in the squad.Qadir’s tenure may have been short on time, but it was not short on news. A unique thinker on the game and a straight talker, Qadir was increasingly a voracious media’s dream. Soon after the squad for the Twenty20 World Cup was finalised, Qadir publicly expressed his concerns over the composition, in particular Saeed Ajmal’s inclusion. The selection of Shahzaib Hasan – though not opposed at the time – also did not go down well with Qadir.Soon after he was appointed, his ideas on how Pakistan would warm up for the Sri Lanka series in January – with a series of practice matches among themselves instead of domestic cricket – also attracted the public ire of PCB officials. His relationship with Younis Khan, Pakistan’s captain, began rockily but is said to have improved over the months. The deterioration in his relationship with Butt, however, appears to have been more critical, leaving Pakistan looking for its fourth chief selector since the 2007 World Cup.

Predicted QPR XI to face Sunderland

Queens Park Rangers will be aiming to progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup when they welcome Sunderland to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium tonight.

Mark Warburton’s charges have won their last three fixtures on home territory but will come into this one off the back of a disappointing defeat at the hands of Peterborough United last time out.

The capital club are likely to be without left-back Lee Wallace and midfielder Sam Field for the visit of the Black Cats. Wallace has been out with a hamstring problem since the middle of August and is yet to make his return to first team action, while Field is set to continue his recovery from a knee injury.

Sam McCallum could also be an injury concern for the Hoops after he was substituted against Peterborough at the weekend with a tight hamstring, meaning Warburton will have no natural left-sided defender available for this midweek encounter.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects QPR to line up against their League One opponents, with many changes from the side which started against the Posh…

In goal, first-choice shot-stopper Seny Dieng is set to keep his place between the sticks despite keeping just four clean sheets in his 15 appearances this season.

Ahead of the Senegal international is likely to be a familiar back three, but with one change. Jordy de Wijs could come in to give Yoann Barbet a well-earned rest, with Rob Dickie and Jimmy Dunne completing the defensive unit.

The engine room is expected to experience wholesale changes, however. Osman Kakay and Luke Amos should get rare opportunities to impress from the off along with the more regulars Moses Odubajo, while 30-year-old Stefan Johansen will offer an experienced head in the middle of the park.

Concluding the starting XI should be a strike partnership of Andre Gray for a rare start and Chris Willock just ahead of Ilias Chair, which would mean that the £1.8m-rated Charlie Austin and his strike partner Lyndon Dykes drop to the bench for a rest after both started against Peterborough.

Aston Villa must land Juventus’ Weston McKennie

Aston Villa sporting director Johan Lange could solve the club’s midfield problem by signing Juventus star Weston McKennie in the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent months had claimed that the Bianconeri would be willing to let the USA international go in the summer, with “strong interest” from both Villa and fellow Premier League side Spurs.

While a move failed to materialise before the deadline, journalist Alan Nixon then revealed that Dean Smith’s side will look to make a fresh attempt at signing McKennie in a couple of months.

And now, speaking to GIVEMESPORT amid the speculation linking Villa with a move for the midfielder, The Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield said: “They definitely need someone who can provide some defensive stability in the middle of the park, but I think they’re trying to find almost that kind of hybrid player. The one who can win the ball back and screen that back four, but then also progress the ball forward.”

Exciting Nakamba upgrade

After months of speculation linking them with a move for the likes of Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, one of the big things that Lange missed for Villa was the signing of a new central midfielder.

In making a move for McKennie, they can rectify that mistake.

Hailed as a “leader” by David Wagner, the American’s performances in the Bundesliga for Schalke earned him a high-profile move to Juventus, where former boss Andrea Pirlo was a big fan of his.

Calling him a “rock”, the Italy icon added: “He’s young and can improve a lot. In my opinion, he’s a midfielder who can play as a No 8 in a three in midfield, right or left. He gets in the box and scores goals but he’s also very good at winning the ball back.

“His role is in a three in midfield as one of the two players on either side of the regista. Last year we played in a different system, so he had to adapt.”

Dubbed as an “outstanding talent”, the £22.5m-rated McKennie is as Pirlo says, a real box-to-box threat. While the end product hasn’t always been there – he’s only scored 11 goals in his short career thus far – all the key elements are: the power, the pace, the tackling and the energy to get up and down the pitch.

As per Whoscored, he has an impressive career average of making 1.3 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game, while also managing just a shade under one shot and key pass per match too – a real indication of his all-action style of play.

That’s significantly better than what Marvelous Nakamba has managed in his career, and while the Zimbabwe international might boast slightly better defensive stats than McKennie, he doesn’t come close to him in terms of the ball at his feet.

As Hatfield says, that hybrid midfielder is what Villa are looking for, and McKennie fits that bill to a tee.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has confirmed a major Aston Villa boost before the game against Arsenal on Friday…

Liverpool fans livid at journalist’s update

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming about a lack of squad depth after journalist David Lynch provided a Reds injury update.

Jurgen Klopp had a quiet summer in the transfer market, only signing Ibrahima Konate and waving goodbye to the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri, among others.

The lack of business left plenty of fans unhappy, with a lack of squad depth claimed as the reason for this.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Liverpool are already looking slightly light in attacking areas this season, with Lynch confirming on Twitter on Thursday that Roberto Firmino and Takumi Minamino are both out of Sunday’s trip to Leeds United in the Premier League.

It means Divock Origi is the only genuine attacking option from the substitutes’ bench, assuming Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota all start.

Liverpool fans unhappy with lack of squad depth

These Liverpool fans took to Twitter to show their frustration at the situation.

“So assuming Liverpool start Salah, Jota and Mane against Leeds, #LFC’s forward options off the bench will be Oxlade-Chamberlain and Origi. This is what some #LFC fans mean when they say the squad is clearly lacking depth.”
