Transfer rumour roundup: What the media are saying about Leeds United

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United recorded a massive 3-2 victory over Millwall on Saturday to bolster their dream of clinching automatic promotion.

In the midst of the euphoria surrounding the weekend result, it would have been easy for the supporters to miss a handful of transfer stories which have emerged in recent days.

But we’re here to keep you in the loop by delivering a roundup of some of the key transfer stories regarding Leeds and potential plans for the summer window – how kind of us.

Take a look below!

Leeds United target Matt Clarke

According to a recent report from The Times, Leeds and Stoke are both interested in signing Portsmouth’s 22-year-old central defender Matt Clarke this summer.

Club insiders believe that he is destined to become a Championship player next season even if Pompey fail to win promotion, and the club value him at around £4 million.

Naturally, a move to Elland Road doesn’t exactly fit the narrative if Leeds manage to clinch promotion to the top-flight, but the promising youngster’s form this season suggests he could be a cunning acquisition at £4 million – even if he needs to make the huge jump to top-flight football.

Trabzonspor president talks up Caleb Ekuban

Ahmet Agaoglu, the president of Turkish outfit Trabzonspor, has suggested that Leeds made a mistake by allowing Caleb Ekuban to move on loan last summer, while speaking to Demiroren News Agency (via Daily Star).

“Leeds United may be regretting their decision, that’s normal, but it’s their fault.

“We got a player that was left out in his previous team and he is impressing for us.”

And the president suggested a permanent deal could be on the cards, although he is in no rush to enter negotiations with plenty of time remaining to make that decision.

“Our option to make his stay permanent expires on the 31st of May. We are still in March.

“So we are relaxed about the situation, we have time.

“Right now, we have more important issues to deal with, but when the right time comes, we will act.”

Marcelo Bielsa gives green light to Stefan Johansen deal

Stefan Johansen was allowed to leave Fulham in January after failing to cement a place in the starting XI, but that has not prevented Marcelo Bielsa from expressing an interest in his services, according to Football Insider.

The report claims that Bielsa has personally given the green light for the club to sign the Norway international when his contract expires in the summer.

A Football Insider source claims Bielsa has labelled the 28-year-old as “one of the best free agents in the market this summer”, with his current deal set to expire at the end of May.

Leeds are light on options in central midfield so it’s easy to see why the Argentine has taken a keen interest in the 47-cap outcast.

So stupid: Liverpool fans react as Andy Robertson is ruled out of the next Champions League round

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Andy Robertson picked up a yellow card in the final stages of the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich, ruling him out of the quarter-final first leg.

The Scotsman was a yellow card away from a one-match ban going into the game at the Allianz Arena, and looked like he was going to avoid a booking as the final whistle drew ever closer.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

However, a foul in the 91st minute means that the former Hull man will have to sit out the next round.

With only Alberto Moreno and utility man James Milner as backup, one would assume that Jurgen Klopp won’t be too happy with Robertson’s game management skills.

Given the quality of the teams left in the competition, the 25-year-old’s absence could be costly for the Reds.

Let’s see what the Liverpool supporters are saying about the incident on Twitter…

Tottenham fans react after Nabil Bentaleb scores twice against Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react after their former player Nabil Bentaleb hit a double against Manchester City in the Champions League.

The Spurs academy graduate left the club to sign for Bundesliga side Schalke back in 2017 after spending a season on loan with the German team, and has gone from strength to strength at the Veltins Arena.

On Wednesday night, the Algerian international got fans talking after scoring a brace from the penalty spot against Pep Guardiola’s reigning Premier League champions, which looked like it would give them an unlikely win but for Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling’s late heroics.

The 24-year-old has now scored eight goals this season in what has been an eye-catching campaign for him personally – impressively, he has also scored all 14 of his penalties for the club.

It must’ve been a proud moment for Spurs fans to see their academy graduate make an impact in the Champions League, so let’s see how they reacted on Twitter to Bentaleb’s performance…

  • Still unbeaten in the Premier League
  • Plenty of cause for celebration
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Spurs have had plenty to celebrate in the 2023-24 campaign, with a flying start made to life under a new manager. The north London outfit have – despite parting with all-time top goalscorer Harry Kane over the summer – made their way to the top of the Premier League table.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Postecoglou’s side remain unbeaten through nine games in the English top-flight, with an attacking brand of football giving supporters plenty to shout about. Celebratory music has been blasted out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a regular basis, and inside the jubilant dressing room, with a disco vibe being embraced a star-studded squad and their larger-than-life boss.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Postecoglou has said of the wild celebrations and who drives them behind the scenes by taking charge of the playlist: “Ah mate, I’ve got no idea. And I stay out of the dressing room partly because of the music choices of the players. Most clubs want to turn their grounds into a fortress – ours is becoming a nightclub, mate. I’m all for it, whatever makes people happy that’s my thing.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Spurs will be back in action on Friday when taking in a derby date with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and Postecoglou has said of his hopes for the months ahead: “I didn’t come here to not be successful. This club has all the fundamentals to be successful. The expectations should be there. Part of the reason why there’s been this real desperation for a trophy is because they feel that’s the space they should be in. That is the expectation. That’s the reality. But what drives me isn’t raising or trying to dampen expectations. What drives me is trying to build something that will realise the ambitions that this club has at this particular moment. People’s perceptions don’t concern me too much. This is a big club and should be in a position to challenge for trophies every season in my opinion.”

Spurs rejected several bidsHeld out for full asking priceGerman giants broke transfer recordWHAT HAPPENED?

The Bundesliga giants made the England captain their top target for the summer when making the addition of another proven striker their No.1 priority. Kane was quickly identified as the man to fill the boots of former attacking talisman Robert Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena.

Spurs, though, are famed for their stubborn approach to sales, with club chairman Daniel Levy not a man to offload prized assets without putting up a fight. That proved to be the case with Kane, as Bayern ended up parting with a club-record fee after seeing several offers knocked back.

WHAT THEY SAID

Matthaus has suggested that Bayern were ultimately forced into paying over the odds for a 30-year-old with only 12 months left on his contract, with the World Cup winner telling : “Those in charge at Bayern were and are 100 per cent convinced of Harry Kane. And that's why they stretched themselves, that's why they pushed their limits. And maybe Bayern has also – in quotation marks – been a little blackmailed by Tottenham. Another million more and a little bit more. They wanted this player. And I say: 100 million for a 30-year-old – Lewandowski was three years older when he left and went to Barcelona for around €50 million – I now assume that it will pay off.”

Kane missed out on an elusive trophy immediately after joining Bayern, as they suffered a shock defeat to RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup. He did, however, open his goal account for the club in a 4-0 win over Wolfsburg on the opening weekend of Bundesliga action and is determined to get his hands on major silverware.

Croft is back to stir Glamorgan fervour

Coach: Robert Croft
Captain: Jacques Rudolph
Last season
In: Craig Meschede (Somerset), Nick Selman, Timm van der Gugten (Dutch passport), Harry Podmore (Middlesex, loan)
Out: Ben Wright (retired)
Overseas: Jacques Rudolph2015 in a nutshell
Glamorgan’s surprise promotion challenge petered out in the Championship – ultimately nobody scored 1000 runs or took 50 wickets – but fourth place still felt like a county punching above its weight. There were few signs, too, that Glamorgan were about to turn Cardiff into a T20 venue to be reckoned with. The outcome was that Toby Radford left as head coach after two years to return to a role of specialist batting coach.2016 prospects
Chief executive Hugh Morris has reduced debts from £16m to less than £5m since returning to Glamorgan, where he was one of 10 homegrown players (plus Waqar Younis) who won the Championship in 1997. Welsh fervour is back in fashion with Robert Croft appointed head coach four years after he called time on a 23-year career. There is much work to do stirring the passions of south Wales and Croft will be grateful to inherit a promising crop of young players, batsmen especially. Craig Meschede is a good signing and Harry Podmore has six matches to make a Championship impact before his loan from Middlesex ends, but the task is a big one.Key player
Graham Wagg, at 32, can look back on a career with some ups and downs but 2015 was one of his best with 838 Championship runs – including a double century against Surrey – and 45 wickets, second to Michael Hogan. A repeat would make Croft’s job much easier as he tries to introduce a more settled approach.Bright young thing
Aneurin Donald was named after the great Welsh politician Aneurin Bevan, architect of the National Health Service, so he should have just the attributes to return Glamorgan to rude health. Donald’s career is still in its infancy – he was not even a regular pick in England’s U-19 World Cup side – but every sign of development for this young batsman will be lapped up.ESPNcricinfo verdict
Morris has stoutly suggested that promotion is a possibility, but with only one side going up it is hard to agree with him. Signs that Cardiff is embracing T20 would be a breakthrough.Bet365 odds: Specsavers Championship, Div 2: 10/1; NatWest Blast n/a; Royal London Cup 25/1
