Liverpool fans fume at James Pearce claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming at James Pearce’s latest update suggesting that Xherdan Shaqiri won’t be replaced this summer.

The Reds have started their Premier League season in impressive fashion, picking up back-to-back wins against Norwich City and Burnley. It means Liverpool are second in the table behind Chelsea on alphabetical order ahead of their mouthwatering clash at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Away from the pitch, Shaqiri is on the verge of joining Ligue 1 club Lyon, bringing an end to three seasons in a Reds shirt.

The hope is that the Swiss will be replaced this summer, in order for Jurgen Klopp to still have plenty of squad depth, but Pearce has claimed on Twitter that that may not be the case. He states that Harvey Elliott’s emergence alleviates the need for a new signing to come in, with the 18-year-old shining at home to Burnley at the weekend.

The journalist outlined: “#LFC have agreed a £9.5 million deal with Lyon for the sale of Xherdan Shaqiri. Good work considering the initial offer earlier this month was just £4 million.

“Not expecting Xherdan Shaqiri to be replaced in this window given the rise of Harvey Elliott. Fellow teenager Kaide Gordon also pencilled in for game time in the domestic cups following his impact in pre-season.”

West Brom: Baggies keen on Andre Gray

West Brom are interested in signing Watford forward Andre Gray this summer, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

The lowdown

Gray has been with the Hornets since 2017, having arrived at Vicarage Road from Burnley.

The forward has found regular game time hard to come by in recent seasons though, making 30 appearances for Xisco Munoz’s side in the 2020/21 season.

Gray has one year remaining on his current deal with Watford, although it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll see out that contract with the Hornets, who are preparing for life back in the Premier League and may not seem him as up to the required standard.

The latest

The Baggies have reportedly registered their interest in signing Gray this summer, with Football Insider’s Hawthorns source claiming that Watford have given the ‘green light’ for the former Burnley striker to depart before the summer transfer window closes.

That report claims that West Brom are keen on either a loan or permanent deal to sign the 30-year-old.

The verdict

Gray could be worth a punt for West Brom this summer, as they look to find a striker who can fire them back into the Premier League this term.

Valerien Ismael already has some strong options available to him in Karlan Grant and Kenneth Zohore, but additional strength in depth could be ideal for the newly-appointed West Brom boss.

Gray has shown that he can score goals in the Championship in the past as well, having played for both Burnley and Brentford at that level, netting 25 goals in 44 appearances as the Clarets won promotion into the Premier League in the 2015/16 season.

Gray had previously been linked with a move to Leeds United, and in an interview with Football Insider discussing those links, pundit and former goalscorer Darren Bent felt as though Gray is a ‘perfect signing’ in the second tier with ‘proven pedigree’ at that level.

The Champions Trophy appears set to take place in Pakistan in Septemberwith Ray Mali, the ICC president, publicly backing Pakistan’s ability to host the tournament a day before its official launch in Lahore. However, concerns over security continue with Tim May, chief executive of the Federation of InternationalCricketers’ Associations (FICA), saying the situation in Pakistan had not changed since Australia postponed a planned tour there in March.Mali, part of a ten-member delegation in Pakistan for the launch and to oversee the facilities at the tournament venues, said Pakistan’s experience in hosting such events will help them put up a good show in September. “The Asia Cup [which starts next week] will givePakistan an opportunity to rehearse for the Champions Trophy,” Mali said. The ICC delegation also held talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board over preparations for the event. “The ICC is launching the event in Lahore on Wednesday and that is an ample proof that there are no problems,” Nasim Ashraf, the PCB chairman, said. “We have made foolproof security arrangements for the event.”An ICC team of security experts visited Pakistan last month toassess whether the country was safe enough for hosting the ChampionsTrophy in September and were reportedly satisfied with thesecurity arrangements. That seems to have cut little ice with May, who believed “absolutely nothing haschanged” in the three months since Australia postponed their Pakistantour after safety concerns. “FICA is very concerned about the inherentrisks of holding such an event in Pakistan in such a landscape of unrestand volatility and opposition to Western countries,” he said. “FICA isnot alone in its concern regarding holding this event in Pakistan, compounded by the timing of the event in terms of the religiouscelebration of Ramadan and the anniversary of the September 11 attacksin New York.”FICA along with other players’ associations, including the AustralianCricketers Association, will commission its own independent report, expected to be completed in a fortnight.Cricket Australia will bring up any concerns it has with the ICC’ssecurity assessment at the meeting of the ICC’s executive board in Dubailater this month. “The welfare of the Australian team and teammanagement is paramount,” Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said.”But we have a responsibility to world cricket and the continueddevelopment of the game as a global sport so we’d like to see thePakistan tour succeed.”While the Asian Cricket Council was satisfied with thesecurity arrangements in Pakistan for the upcoming Asia Cup, beginningnext week, New Zealand allrounder Jacob Oram had recently expressedconcerns over his team’s security ahead of their three-match ODIseries in Pakistan in late August.

– O Valdívia joga bem em qualquer time brasileiro.

James Pearce makes key Liverpool claim

Liverpool have not completed the signing of Ghanaian youngster Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, according to The Athletic‘s James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Reds claimed to have signed youngster

It was claimed earlier in the week that the Reds had agreed to sign Issahaku, immediately loaning him out to Sporting Lisbon in the process, in order to continue maturing as a player.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder had caught the eye playing for Steadfast FC in his homeland, also scoring two goals in six appearances for Ghana’s Under-20 side.

The Latest: Pearce laughs off rumour

Despite Liverpool seemingly completing a move for Issahaku, Pearce has been quick to deny the rumour, taking to Twitter on Wednesday to say he has joined Sporting permanently.

After being quizzed on the matter by a fan, Pearce confirmed ‘I checked with contacts’ and the Reds ‘haven’t signed him’.

The Verdict: Pearce should be trusted

When it comes to the most reliable Liverpool journalists around, Pearce is near the top of the pile, so he should be trusted over the original source, which has seen been shared around in various outlets like The Mirror.

It would be a big surprise now if it transpired that the Reds actually had acquired Issahaku’s signature and sent him out on loan to Sporting.

Perhaps they could make a move for the youngster in the future though, with a fan-made compilation on Twitter recently showing he clearly has talent and penchant for scoring wondergoals.

Spurs could still secure Pochettino return

Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of bringing Mauricio Pochettino back to the club aren’t dead and buried just yet…

What’s the word?

In a stunning new twist, The Sun claim that there is still hope that the North London outfit could secure their former manager but it boils down to one of two likely factors.

Amongst an article suggesting that Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter has rejected the opportunity to take the vacancy, it’s reported that a return for Pochettino could still happen this summer, weeks after a move seemed to be ruled out due to Paris Saint-Germain’s reluctance to let their manager leave.

The Sun claim that if PSG are able to persuade either Zinedine Zidane, who left Real Madrid at the end of the 2020/21 season, or Didier Deschamps to join after Euro 2020, where France have just been knocked out in the Round of 16 stage, then they could still let Pochettino go back to Spurs.

There’s hope yet…

After suffering blow after blow throughout this long process, this would be some encouraging news for Daniel Levy as well as the Lilywhites faithful.

Names like Julian Naglesmann, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and now Potter have rejected the chance to take over at the club.

It is thought that the Spurs supremo believes that replacing Pochettino with Jose Mourinho was his biggest-ever mistake since taking charge at the club, the fact he’s reportedly told friends this speaks volumes.

Some of the key criteria set out by the chairman seems to match up with the 49-year-old immensely.

According to the Guardian very early on in the search, he was looking for an attack-minded head coach that could commit to the development of their youth players.

Basically, a Pochettino 2.0.

Therefore, there cannot be a better candidate out there than the man himself.

After all, he did overachieve with such little resources, leading Spurs to three consecutive top-three finishes and even at one stage, he went 18 months without a first-team arrival.

When reports first emerged linking Pochettino with a quite sensational comeback, the Tottenham fanbase was sent into raptures over the prospects of seeing their favourite back.

As relayed by This is Futbol, one fan claimed that it would be “like Christmas Eve” even if there was a “2% chance” of it happening, whilst another added that he was “salivating uncontrollably” over the thought of seeing the Argentine back, with one further member of the Spurs fanbase deeming it a “madness.”

Although this is a small sample size, it really does convey the general feeling in North London. So many would be delighted to see Pochettino back, so this latest claim should have many absolutely buzzing.

This also has to be seen as a big boost for Levy’s chances of rectifying his major blunder, so he must look to try and force PSG’s hand now.

AND in other news, Fresh twist emerges in Spurs’ manager search, it’ll surely leave fans buzzing…

“When you win, there’s no better feeling” – Brighton duo Danny Welbeck and Adam Lallana reveal the feeling of representing England at the Euros

The Euro 2020 tournament is well underway, and England played their final group game against the Czech Republic last night at Wembley Stadium.

Having won their first group game against Croatia, the Three Lions drew their previous game with Scotland at Wembley 0-0, after a poor performance, leaving Gareth Southgate and his squad needing victory to win the group, which they duly delivered.

They could now face Germany, France, Portugal, or even Hungary in their knockout stages.

Despite the current crop of England stars fighting it out, Betway recently sat down with a whole host of players to talk about that special feeling of playing at the Euros.

This included Brighton and Hove Albion duo Danny Welbeck and Adam Lallana – with Welbeck a part of England’s Euro 2012 squad.

Lallana, however, never actually featured at a Euros for England, but did represent the Three Lions at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The pair opened up on that special feeling of being able to play for their country, having played a combined 76 games for England.

Welbeck first spoke about that feeling of the monumental support during those special tournaments, stating that he knew the whole country was behind himself and his teammates.

However, Welbeck did allude to the pressure of pulling on that coveted shirt, using the advice he received as a youngster at Manchester United…

“Growing up at the Manchester United academy, we’d always been told to play the game, and not the occasion… Try and take that pressure and use it as a positive”.

Lallana spoked fondly of his time playing for England, believing that he will only truly understand how special those moments were once he has retired.

The 33-year-old also the overriding feeling of joy when being able to win a game…

“When you win, there’s no better feeling in football. It’s worth fighting through the disappointments just to achieve them moments”.

One thing for sure is that the current squad will be craving that winning feeling, with all attentions turning to Wembley for tonight’s final group game against the Czech Republic.
