Southampton: Saints keen on Sean Longstaff swoop

Southampton are keen on a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Saints start off 2021/22 in lacklustre fashion

Starting off the new campaign with a disappointing 3-1 collapse away to Everton, Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will be under no illusions that further additions may be needed in order to provide adequate strength in depth to breed success in 2021/22.

Busy in the transfer market, the Austrian has brought in six bodies in the form of Armando Broja, Theo Walcott, Dynel Simeu, Valentino Livramento, Romain Perraud and Adam Armstrong [Transfermarkt].

Now, they could be set to add an anchor man to the St Mary’s ranks owing to recent developments.

The Latest: Southampton keen on Longstaff, Everton also interested

Southampton are interested in a move for 23-year-old Longstaff, with his price-tag rumoured to be set at £10 million by the Magpies [Daily Mail].

His contract at St James’ Park is due to expire next summer, whilst he turns 24 in October which signifies that his current employers wouldn’t receive any development fee should he choose to run down the deal.

Everton are also attracted to the possibility of bringing Longstaff to Goodison Park, potentially reuniting the 5 foot 11 ace with his former manager Rafael Benitez.

The Verdict: Longstaff would be an astute signing by Southampton

Relatively inexpensive in the modern-day market for a young, English talent, Longstaff would represent an astute piece of business by the Southampton hierarchy.

As speculation continues to rumble on surrounding the future of Saints captain James Ward-Prowse, looking into contingency plans should be a key priority for Hasenhuttl in the present.

In 2020/21, Longstaff scored a solitary goal in 27 appearances for the Toon in all competitions [Transfermarkt], but he is really known for his ability to recycle possession effectively, recording a passing accuracy of 81.5% across the last term in the Premier League [WhoScored].

He was once praised by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, after stellar performances by him and Isaac Hayden in a 2-1 win over the Citizens in 2019. The ex-Barcelona manager stated: “We could not deal with Newcastle’s holding midfielders” [Chronicle Live].

Moving into the final stretch of the recruitment window, the Saints should look to snap up Longstaff ahead of rival competition for his signature.

Spurs enter Vlahovic talks

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Tottenham are set to enter talks with the agent of Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs need a striker

Spurs are quite clearly in need of a new striker. Harry Kane has shared his desire to move on from north London (Sky Sports), while he even failed to turn up for training to further illustrate his point (talkSPORT).

Even if the talisman stays put, the Lilywhites do not have adequate support in depth behind him, such has been the problem for several years now.

They have been heavily linked with a move for Lautaro Martinez (Football Insider), but it also seems they have their eyes on another forward during this transfer window.

The Latest: Spurs to enter Vlahovic talks

As per this latest report, Spurs are set to enter talks with the agent of Vlahovic, while Inter Milan are also interested.

Fiorentina are said to be looking for €70m (£59.2m) to part ways with the Serbia international.

The Verdict: Top target

Losing Kane would be a blow to Nuno Espirito Santo – he will of course be eager to hold on to the man who has 221 goals in 336 games for the club.

However, if he were to depart, bringing in Vlahovic would certainly soften the blow. The 21-year-old was in top form last season in Serie A, scoring 21 goals in 37 matches (Transfermarkt), while he also has two strikes in seven caps for his country.

Legendary Italian striker Christian Vieri is a fan, calling him “the best striker in Europe” for his age along with Borussia Dortmund man Erling Haaland (Football Italia). £59m is a lot of money to spend on just one player given the pandemic’s financial implications on clubs, but they would have that money available if Kane were to depart. To us, Vlahovic would be a worthy replacement.

The squad includes Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo, as well as notable performers from the Stanford Twenty20 domestic tournament.”This is a squad of the best performers in the two editions of the Stanford 20/20 tournament we’ve had so far and the best players in the region,” Viv Richards, the chairman of the seven-member selection committee, said. “It was a difficult task to select the top 32 but our selection panel believes that these players will provide us with the firepower and all the other resources to prevail over England in what is the richest prize in team sport history.”Richards said the squad would be whittled down based on how the players fare in training. “The difficult task of further reducing this training group to the playing squad lies ahead, so we will have to pay keen attention to how the players cope in the training camps which will be held in Antigua in the coming months.”Dave Mohammed, the left-arm spinner who won the Player-of-the-Tournament award last season, provides spin-bowling options along with his Trinidad team-mate Samuel Badree, the legspinner, while John Eugene, the only centurion in Stanford 20/20 history, is the oldest player in the mix at 37. Players Who Could Get Big Transfers This Summer

This summer has been massively exciting in the soccer world. Soccer fans around the world have had the pleasure of watching both the European Championships as well the Copa America. A summer of international soccer is truly a special one, and every moment should be savoured.

Another exciting part of the summer in the world of soccer is the transfer window. Every year, the transfer window opens and clubs are free to negotiate with players about potential moves. The window usually sees many surprises, and life-changing moves occur. How a team manages their transfers can really decide how much success they may have in the following season. This year, there could be some massive transfers on the horizon. With several world class players announcing their desire to leave, some teams could really strengthen their squads with some of these additions.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane announced prior to the end of the Premier League campaign that he would like to move on from Tottenham Hotspurs. This is understandable due to the poor form of the London side, largely down to managerial issues. But where is one of the best strikers in the world likely to head to? It’s said that Manchester City are the frontrunners to sign the Englishman. After all, their number nine position has been massively hindered following the departure of club legend Sergio Aguero. The deal is far from done though, other clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United, and PSG may all also be interested in the forward.

Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish has been the talk of the last few transfer windows. It seems inevitable that he will at some stage leave Aston Villa. The creative midfielder is a special talent and has displayed it since gaining promotion with Villa. This season was a real breakthrough one for the Englishman. Although his talent was undeniable already, he really established himself as one of the best creative players in the Premier League. A number of top sides are likely to be on the hunt for Grealish this year, with both Manchester clubs looking the most likely to make a move.

Sergio Ramos

There is no doubt in this one, Sergio Ramos leftg Real Madrid this summer, moving to PSG. Real Madrid announced the departure of their long serving defender and captain in June. Although moving towards the end of his career, Sergio Ramos is still very much one of the best defending talents in world soccer.

Jadon Sancho

Another name that seemed to constantly come up in transfer talks is Jadon Sancho. The former Manchester City winger has been in phenomenal form since his move to Borussia Dortmund. The Englishman has secured a move back to the Premier League, with  Manchester United the destination for the youngster.

However, Hafiz Khalid (12) hit the winning stroke, lifting Qaiser to mid-wicket for a boundary. The plays of the third day between England and New Zealand at Old Trafford

Monty Panesar had plenty of appeals, wickets and celebrations © Getty Images
Non-appeal of the day
New Zealand clearly felt so confident of knocking England over that they didn’t need to appeal for all the edges. Early in the day Iain O’Brien brought a ball back into Kevin Pietersen, who stretched forward to play it. The ball ballooned into the slips, where it was caught, but the appeal was so muted from behind the wicket that everyone presumed it had come off the pad. Replays showed a different story as Pietersen had got a healthy inside edge on the ball. However, there was no doubt about Pietersen’s next edge, which was comfortably held at slip by Ross Taylor to begin England’s rapid demise.Wicket of the day
Daniel Vettori’s beautiful setting up of Pietersen and Paul Collingwood came close but, if only for the celebrations, it goes to Monty Panesar. He responded from a poor first-innings display with a career-best 6 for 37, his third five-wicket haul at Old Trafford, and in the process grabbed his 100th Test scalp. He’d already gained three lbw decisions from Simon Taufel – and had another turned down that nearly caused him a seizure – when he went up again against Taylor. The ball turned from off stump, but Taufel still raised the finger. Taylor wasn’t happy, and the decision could have gone the other way, but Panesar didn’t care. At the end of the over he grabbed his sweater and went back to the boundary to soak up the applause of an adoring crowd. He even gave them a wave.Juggle of the day
Taylor was kept busy at slip throughout England’s innings. On the second evening he grassed a chance from Andrew Strauss, but was back on top catching form today…well almost. He was the lone man in the cordon with O’Brien bowling to Ian Bell, and was being kept on his toes by Bell’s constant flirting outside off stump. Eventually the edge came, flying at waist height towards Taylor. But it didn’t go in cleanly, jumping out of his hands. Taylor began to fall backwards, yet had the presence of mind to keep his eyes on the ball and grabbed it at the second attempt.Catch of the day
Brendon McCullum is a box-office cricketer, one that people will flood into a ground to watch. Usually that’s because of his batting, but his glove work is now up there with the best in the world. He already had a superb catch to his name yesterday after snaffling Andrew Strauss low to his right, but he surpassed that with his next effort. The New Zealand slips like to space themselves very wide, first is often stood where a conventional second would be. No doubt, this will be partly down to instruction from McCullum who has huge confidence in his game. His catch to dismiss Panesar showed the confidence isn’t misplaced. He flung himself horizontally to his left, at full stretch, and managed to cling onto the ball with the webbing on his left glove. A breathtaking effort, and the latest Kodak moment for McCullum’s growing photo album.Defiance of the day
England were still two runs short of saving the follow-on when the ninth-wicket fell. That embarrassment was avoided with a sharp two from Broad, who then proceeded to give the England fans some rare moments to cheer. He twice drove Kyle Mills through the off side – once off the back foot then off the front – with a class and conviction that eluded the top order.Alarming delivery of the day
Vettori and Panesar were the major threats as the ball spun regularly, but there was also plenty happening for the quicks as well. When England began their run chase Chris Martin was bowling round the wicket to Alastair Cook. One ball pitched just back of a good length and reared alarmingly, while also jagging away off the seam. McCullum had to leap and still barely managed to reach it. It’s a good job it wasn’t straight, otherwise Cook might have lost his head.

West Brom close in on Matt Clarke signing

West Brom are reportedly closing in on the signing of Brighton centre-back Matt Clarke as Valerien Ismael continues to strengthen his squad.

The Lowdown: Ismael makes his mark

The Baggies may have been relegated back to the Championship, but there is confidence in the air ahead of next season.

Ismael has taken over from Sam Allardyce following a great spell at Barnsley, whom he guided to the play-offs in the spring, and he has already brought Tykes midfielder Alex Mowatt with him to The Hawthorns.

The Latest: Clarke linked with West Brom switch

It now looks as though Clarke may be the next player to join the Ismael revolution, with The Daily Mail claiming that a deal is close to being completed.

A £5m deal is mooted for the 24-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Derby County from Brighton, making 42 starts in the Championship.

The Verdict: Good addition for Baggies

While Clarke struggled to make the step up to the Premier League with the Seagulls, failing to even get a game for the south coast club, he could be a solid signing for West Brom ahead of a hopeful promotion push in 2021/22.

He was a strong performer for Derby in 2020/21 despite their struggles, averaging an impressive 4.3 clearances per game in the league, along with 1.4 tackles and interceptions apiece.

Clarke could make the Baggies’ squad even stronger, providing healthy competition for places which will be needed during a taxing 46-match campaign.

In other news, a pundit has urged West Brom to sign one player this summer – find out who it is here.

West Ham: Fans left livid by ExWHUemployee’s update on Declan Rice

Declan Rice has reportedly rejected two contract offers with West Ham, with both offers being below the weekly wage of Andriy Yarmolenko, according to ExWHUemployee.

This update comes after The Telegraph’s Matt Law reported that the West Ham midfielder has turned down two contract offers from the club.

Rice was an important member of David Moyes’ squad in the 2020/21 season, with the 22-year-old making 32 league starts from his 38 appearances in the Premier League.

West Ham finished sixth in the top-flight standings last term, and will be keen to build on that strong campaign heading into the new season, which gets underway on Sunday 15th August against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Rice has had interest from Chelsea in recent months, whilst Liverpool are also believed to be keen on landing his signature this summer, after this recent update on his future with West Ham.

The midfielder was labelled as ‘top drawer’ by Wolves’ all-time top goalscorer Steve Bull in an exclusive interview with Football Transfer Tavern.

Plenty of West Ham supporters took to social media after this update, with the majority being hugely frustrated.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below….

“Insulting. Should be the best paid player at the club. We’ve shaved about £600k a week off the wage bill last few years.”

“Get rid of Yarmalenko and Anderson that’s 200k per week saved and make Rice the highest earner. Simple solution. Get it done WHU.”

“Disgrace, its as if they almost want to upset him so he asks for a move. He should be the highest paid player at the club no question about it If they value him at £100 million pay then pay him accordingly.”

“Offer him what he wants.”

“Then good for him. Deserves to be our highest-paid player. Should be building a team round him.”

SPCL 1 – Liphook slayed by Goldstraw as BAT romp home

Left-arm pace bowler Dan Goldstraw wrecked Liphook & Ripsley with a spell of 7-12 as BAT Sports stepped up the pressure on Havant at the top of the ECB Southern Electric Premier League. They skittled the East Hampshire side for a Premier Division 1 lowest 44 all out before romping to a nine-wicket win.The result left Liphook & Ripsley propping up the table, marginally behind Burridge, who were beaten at Bournemouth.BAT’s 21-point haul cut Havant’s lead at the top to a mere six points and set up a potential thrilling top-of-the-table clash at Havant Park next Saturday, 11am.Havant, meanwhile, were left marooned and frustrated by a Friday afternoon cancellation of their scheduled match against Portsmouth at St Helen’s, Southsea. But Havant’s disappointment hardly worried BAT, who romped to an amazing 13th successive all-day win since June 2001.They seized the initiative directly Dave Banks on the toss, with Kirk Stewart having Hampshire YC’s teenager Chris Wright caught behind at 3-1.It all went terribly wrong for Liphook from there, with half the side back in the pavilion with only 16 runs on the board.Goldstraw, moving the ball off the seam, proved virtually unplayable, while Stewart (3-19) frequently beat the bat.Only South African Alistair Gray and Duncan Berry reached the dizzy heights of double figures as Liphook collapsed to 44 all out in the 31st over.BAT lost Damian Shirazi – caught behind – in the second over, but cruised to an easy win through Dave Banks (29) and Richard Kenway (13).
