Testing pitch promises tense finish

When they talk of the calm before the storm, this “calm” has nothing peaceful about it. A fretful period in which little can be done but speculate of the toll of the ensuing chaos, this time is best spent preparing to endure. As for life beyond it, like the man who stockpiles seeds in his nuclear bunker, just make sure you survive it first.Today, 218 runs scored for the loss of seven wickets in 94 overs, as both sides foraged for their Division One lives ahead of a fourth day that will fray the nerves of all involved. Both sides performed admirably, but Derbyshire will go into tomorrow as favourites by virtue of having runs on the board. As expected, the pitch has deteriorated sufficiently over the last two days to shift the balance towards the bowlers. However, this assistance is skewed towards the Pavilion End, which has displayed some drastic variable bounce. It started, rather alarmingly, at the end of the seventh over of the day, when the left handed Ben Slater tried to tuck a good length delivery on leg stump from Tim Linley behind square on the leg side. The next thing he knew, the ball had somehow managed to take the leading shoulder of the bat and loop to point for the first wicket of the day.Soon after Wayne Madsen was on the receiving end of a sharp uppercut, as Linley found the same spot to daze the Derbyshire captain. But Madsen took the count before rallying to see things through to tea, by which time he had passed fifty and helped build a lead of 84, with the further wickets of Paul Borrington – Linley’s 150th first class scalp for Surrey – and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who fell lbw to Gareth Batty.Madsen could not hold off the demons for much longer, as Chris Tremlett, who had looked innocuous earlier in the day, shot out both he and Alex Hughes with identical balls from the Vauxhall End that kept low and clattered the pads. On both occasions, the batsmen were already turning to the dressing room – having given the offending area of the pitch a stern stare – before the umpire’s finger was in full view.Surrey’s decision to delay taking the new ball (eventually making an appearance in Tremlett’s hand in the 93rd over) was a wise one considering how much joy they were getting from an older, softer one. Batty was the last to benefit from it when he coaxed Peter Burgoyne forward and took his outside edge with Zander de Bruyn taking a smart catch low to his right at first slip.Surrey’s captain deserves some plaudits for the way he marshalled the field and his bowlers. He even displayed some impressive self-restraint after a host of unsuccessful lbw shouts, some of which were mighty close. After one particularly visceral appeal was turned down, he stood still, baffled, before returning to the bottom of his mark to reconvene with an extra grumbling skip in his step. Having missed the FLt20 Finals Day for a breach of discipline, he is all too aware that any further displays of dissent will elicit further sanctions, regardless of how vindicated he might be.But some handy contributions late on from Richard Johnson and Tim Poynton, as well as a more unconvincing one from the David Wainwright, mean that Derbyshire will start day four with a lead of 161, already ensuring a tricky fourth-innings chase. The surface will play more unpredictably, and with the pace of Mark Footitt and the turn and bounce of Wainwright (who looks more like the bowler who took 44 wickets last season) to come, it won’t be easy going. For one team, defeat will mean all but the end of their stay in Division One.

India enter final with crushing win

The only real resistance to India’s incredible march into the final was two sets of protesters who broke into the field on two separate occasions

The Report by Sidharth Monga20-Jun-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Ishant Sharma exploited the steep bounce and seam movement well•AFPThe only glitches in India’s march into the final were two sets of pitch invaders running on to the field on two separate occasions. On a Cardiff surface with a lot of moisture, the ball seamed, bounced steeply and turned appreciably, and the Indian bowlers were all over Sri Lanka after winning the toss. In the afternoon, the Indian openers continued their run of impressive stands, adding 77 through some luck and some attractive shots, and India cruised home with 15 overs to spare. It would have reminded India of their first day of international cricket in South Africa on the 2010-11 tour, when they were inserted on a pitch that had absorbed a lot of rain and were bowled out for 136. Watching the first innings of this match, it seemed Sri Lanka had done well to not be rolled over for 136 themselves. The conditions were so juicy India’s three frontline quicks bowled the first 22 overs – even MS Dhoni had a bowl later – and India either beat the bat or hit edge on 68 occasions. The Sri Lankan batsmen couldn’t be blamed much, except for probably Kusal Perera. They had to dig in hard just to survive. They strived to – Kumar Sangakkara had left alone 12 out of his first 32 balls – but eventually the ball with your name arrived. However, what really foiled Sri Lanka’s plans was the assistance the pitch provided to spin, which they hadn’t budgeted for when they were batting out the quicks like it was a Test. The quicks went for 98 for four wickets in their 30 overs; the spinners took four wickets for 81 in their 20.The pitch might have been great help, but India exploited the toss advantage with impressive accuracy. The first extra came in the 20th over. Angelo Mathews, among others, fought the conditions, but like others he too fell the moment he became adventurous. It didn’t help that Sri Lanka had lost Dinesh Chandimal to injury before the match began and Tillakaratne Dilshan retired hurt in the fifth over. Kusal showed again that his game is not suited for these conditions as he followed a full and wide delivery to edge it for Suresh Raina to take one of his three catches at second slip. It was the seventh time in 12 matches that Buvneshwar Kumar had taken a wicket in his first spell, including five openers dismissed in single figures. Then Dilshan seemed to have pulled his calf while trying to keep out a sharply swinging delivery. He tried to bat on, but with the new no-runner regulations he had to leave the field. Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne began to play it like the first morning of a Test, and justifiably so.India kept the pressure up with Bhuvneshwar bowling a nine-over spell, and Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma getting appreciable movement every time they landed the ball on the seam. Ishant got the ball to stick into the pitch and steep tennis-ball bounce too.Sangakkara began to take the odd risk at the end of the 13th over, but when he charged at Bhuvneshwar and square-drove him for the first boundary since the fourth over, the score had reached only 32. Around this time, Ishant was beginning to get balls to misbehave a lot. The batsmen had to start playing at balls sooner or later, and when they did it didn’t bring good news. The combination of that bounce and seam movement finally accounted for Thirimanne, who followed a short-of-a-length delivery and fended in front of his chest. Sangakkara provided a replay in case you had missed it. Raina had taken all three, and the score now was 41 for 3 after 18 overs. It was so inviting that when Dhoni finally took off a seamer after 22 overs, he gave up the pads and began to bowl the 24th over.During their 78-run stand in 18.1 overs, Mahela Jayawardene and Mathews successfully reviewed an lbw call each, and seemed to have put Sri Lanka back on track. With the ball turning thanks to the moisture, their plans unravelled. Jayawardene was bowled by a Jadeja skidder, and the batting Powerplay’s analysis read 5-2-12-1.Everyone who tried big hits in the remaining overs fell to the tricks of the pitch. Dilshan came back to bat for the last two overs. Sri Lanka, though, could manage just the 54 in the last 10. About an hour later, by when the Indian openers had seen off the Nuwan Kulasekara threat, it almost seemed the pitch had lost all its moisture. Shikhar Dhawan continued to drive and cut fearlessly, Rohit Sharma continued to provide the starts, and Virat Kohli added a fifty to four centuries in his last seven matches against Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka didn’t help themselves. They used Lasith Malinga – their best hope despite his poor record against India – only for three overs at the top and then when India had chugged along to 93 for 1. They dropped Dhawan thrice, first when he was on 18. India were not complaining, though.

Unmukt Chand leads Delhi to Vijay Hazare title

Unmukt Chand continued his habit of scoring hundreds in a final when he scored 116 against Assam in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Visakhapatnam

ScorecardThe victorious Delhi team with the Vijay Hazare Trophy•ESPNcricinfo LtdUnmukt Chand continued his habit of scoring hundreds in a final with a 116 against Assam in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Visakhapatnam. After scoring 290 for 9, Delhi’s bowling and fielding ensured they won the final by 75 runs as they dismissed Assam for 215 within 45 overs.Once Assam chose to field, Chand and Puneet Bisht provided Delhi a steady start, putting on 97 for the first wicket. Bisht scored a brisk 64-ball 52 but was dismissed in the 21st over. Gautam Gambhir was soon sent back to the pavilion 10 runs later when he was caught by AK Das off Syed Mohammad for 5.Chand and Jagrit Anand steadied the ship again, putting together 115 in 100 balls for the third wicket. When Anand got out for 48, Delhi were 222 for 3 in 40.1 overs and were set for a big score but Assam, led by Pritam Das, ensured they were kept to 290 as they took the next seven wickets for 55 runs. Chand scored his maiden List A hundred which included eight fours and three sixes. Milind Kumar’s unbeaten cameo of 31 from 22 balls meant that Delhi’s lower order didn’t collapse completely and they set up a competitive score. In reply, Assam lost opener Pritam Debnath to a run-out in the third over, and four overs later, Sibsankar Roy was dismissed by Parvinder Awana for 10. Pallavkumar Das and Dheeraj Jadhav put on 30 runs in the next eight overs but Pallavkumar was also run-out, for 31, in the 15th over. Varun Sood capitalised on the opportunity and dismissed the new batsman Tarjinder Singh, leaving Assam at 72 for 4. Before Gokul Sharma and Jadhav could consolidate the innings, Sood struck again, getting Gokul caught for 11.Assam only managed to build small partnerships throughout the match which wasn’t enough to chase a target of 291. Jadhav held one end but his knock of 87 from 114 could not take them close to victory. Rajat Bhatia picked up three wickets from there, including Jadhav’s, and finished with figures of 3 for 36 from his seven overs which sealed the victory for Delhi. Sood finished with 2 for 46 in 10 overs.

A expectativa é imensa.

England to look at selection – Cook

Alastair Cook admitted England would have to reflect on the selection of their side after succumbing to a nine-wicket loss against India in the first Test in Ahmedabad.

George Dobell in Ahmedabad19-Nov-2012Alastair Cook admitted England would have to reflect on the selection of their side after succumbing to a nine-wicket loss against India in the first Test in Ahmedabad.England’s bowling attack, with three frontline seamers and one specialist spinner, looked ill-suited for a Test played on a low, slow wicket, with the seamers claiming 1 for 254 in the match.Their batsmen also struggled and, in eight innings between them, England’s middle-order of Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell and Samit Patel contributed just 68 runs. By contrast, Cheteshwar Pujara scored 247 runs in the match without being dismissed and India’s two spinners claimed 13 wickets between them. While Cook admitted the problem, in part, was simply that several players had underperformed, he also conceded that the team management would have to reconsider the make-up and balance of the side ahead of the second Test which begins in Mumbai on Friday.”Clearly we’re going to have to look at our selection,” Cook said. “There are some good people making decisions in this England team and we thought we were doing the right thing for the side. The result showed we might have got it wrong. When you get beaten by nine wickets, you have a look at a lot of areas and we have to look at what we could have done better. There will be a lot to ponder. We’ll have to look at our squad for the next game.”The omission of left-arm spinner Monty Panesar has been highlighted as a key error by many critics but Cook felt the failure of England’s batting line-up in the first innings was more of an issue. He refuted any suggestion that England had been underprepared, but accepted that they would require far more of the team to contribute if they were to fight their way back in the series.”Our batting, especially in the first innings, didn’t deliver enough runs,” Cook said. “I thought it was a very good cricket wicket. There was a little bit in it for the spinners, but if you applied yourself with the bat it held together probably better than we thought it would. It was turning, yes. But runs were able to be had out there, as we showed in our second innings.”If we’re going to win out here, everyone in the game has to contribute. We need everyone to stick their hands up at certain times. The lads who haven’t performed as well as they would have liked in this game will be very disappointed. We showed a lot of character in that second half of the game. There are a lot of quality players in that dressing-room, with very good records who have scored hundreds against every attack in the world. They didn’t deliver in this game, and they know that. The middle order didn’t score enough runs. Everyone has to have a look at themselves if we want to take something out of this series.”The defeat means England have lost five out of six Tests in Asian conditions this year, leaving Cook to agree that mental scars might be as large an impediment to progress as technical deficiencies. “I’d say it’s a bit of both. Clearly, there are always technical issues before the mental ones kick in. We’re doing the right things. It’s now getting it right out in the middle and trusting our method there. We can only continue working as hard as we are doing, and I can’t fault the lads for that. It’s a case of working as hard as we can in the nets, and trusting our method out in the middle.”Cook also said the result had soured the memory of one of his finest innings. “I’m very happy with the way I batted,” he said. “To score any hundred for England is very special and to score one in that situation probably made it even more special for me.”Technically, it might have been a good innings. But you always get more satisfaction when you do it in a winning cause or to save a game. Maybe the 230 in Brisbane, in a similar match situation, is a better innings. But the result is what really matters and we weren’t good enough over the five days to win. I’d have been even prouder if I’d survived and dragged a draw out of it. I’m bitterly disappointed.”

Honours even after Narine strikes

It turned out to be a bittersweet first day in Antigua for New Zealand, for though they fought hard they gifted away four wickets

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran25-Jul-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDaniel Flynn gave New Zealand a solid start with Martin Guptill•DigicelCricket.com/Brooks LaTouche PhotographyIt turned out to be a bittersweet first day in Antigua for New Zealand, for though they fought hard they gifted away four wickets. Martin Guptill undid nearly three sessions of hard work with an impetuous slog that denied him a third Test century. West Indies bowled well in spells and could have had better results had their bowling been backed by better fielding. Sunil Narine looked his potent self late in the day to lift home spirits after they looked a touch deflated following a wicketless morning session.New Zealand needed a solid batting effort after their failures in the ODIs and Guptill led from the top of the order, nearly lasting the entire the day. An underachieving Test batsman, Guptill had shunned the Indian Premier League to sharpen his long-format skills with Derbyshire. He also needed to improve his record against better attacks – his two centuries were against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. The standout features today were his patience and how dearly he valued his wicket.New Zealand were given a solid start by their openers Daniel Flynn and Guptill after Ross Taylor had won the toss. The new ball swung and beat the bat, and some deliveries landed close to the batsmen’s toes. Yet, it wasn’t enough to give West Indies a breakthrough in the morning. The seamers didn’t pitch the ball up enough to exploit the movement on offer and the batsmen were allowed to leave too many deliveries outside off stump. Roach tried spearing in the yorker, but the openers were alert and kept those deliveries out.Only in the tenth over did New Zealand score their first boundary: Flynn driving a half volley from Darren Sammy through extra cover. At times, Roach bowled from wide of the crease to direct the ball at the body, but when he strayed too straight Guptill flicked to the boundary. When Roach was too full on middle stump, Guptill drove down the ground.New Zealand were 60 for 0 when Sammy brought on Narine in the 21st over. Guptill’s straight six showed New Zealand weren’t too intimidated by that bowling change. New Zealand handled Narine fairly well, until the shadows lengthened. After lunch, Guptill batted responsibly, wearing the bowlers down by occupying the crease. Flynn capitalised each time Narine pitched short but when he attempted another cut, the top edge because of the extra bounce was caught point, ending the opening stand on 97.Guptill was a little circumspect when Ravi Rampaul began to reverse swing the ball. He eased those nerves with two fluent boundaries through the off side when Rampaul pitched too full. Guptill got to his fifty with a square drive off Roach, but against Narine, he was more watchful. Narine’s round the wicket line, backed up by three men around the bat, kept Guptill in check, but New Zealand didn’t have to worry about him getting bogged down, because Brendon McCullum was at the other end.McCullum played his natural game, taking on Narine by pulling a short delivery over square leg, and later playing an audacious reverse sweep. He survived an lbw shout from Roach that was reviewed, but the referral was cancelled because the bowler had overstepped. In that same over, however, McCullum spooned the ball low to Narsingh Deonarine at mid-off, giving West Indies their second wicket.Taylor and Guptill added 90 for the third wicket, with Taylor particularly harsh on anything wide of off stump. He was not entirely at ease against Narine, though. Narine got the old ball to turn and bounce and Taylor had issues while trying to defend with soft hands, with fielders waiting for the bat-pad catch. He fell to a poor shot, trying to pull Narine and tamely playing on.At 223 for 3, New Zealand still had the upper hand and Guptill was one hit away from a century. The nervous 90s, though, got the better of him. He tried to repeat the shot that fetched him his only six, off Narine, but the top edge went only as far as mid-on. Time slowed as Guptill squatted, trying to comprehend what he had done. West Indies had found an opening late in the day. It was now up to the New Zealand lower order to start afresh.
