Croft is back to stir Glamorgan fervour

Coach: Robert Croft
Captain: Jacques Rudolph
Last season
In: Craig Meschede (Somerset), Nick Selman, Timm van der Gugten (Dutch passport), Harry Podmore (Middlesex, loan)
Out: Ben Wright (retired)
Overseas: Jacques Rudolph2015 in a nutshell
Glamorgan’s surprise promotion challenge petered out in the Championship – ultimately nobody scored 1000 runs or took 50 wickets – but fourth place still felt like a county punching above its weight. There were few signs, too, that Glamorgan were about to turn Cardiff into a T20 venue to be reckoned with. The outcome was that Toby Radford left as head coach after two years to return to a role of specialist batting coach.2016 prospects
Chief executive Hugh Morris has reduced debts from £16m to less than £5m since returning to Glamorgan, where he was one of 10 homegrown players (plus Waqar Younis) who won the Championship in 1997. Welsh fervour is back in fashion with Robert Croft appointed head coach four years after he called time on a 23-year career. There is much work to do stirring the passions of south Wales and Croft will be grateful to inherit a promising crop of young players, batsmen especially. Craig Meschede is a good signing and Harry Podmore has six matches to make a Championship impact before his loan from Middlesex ends, but the task is a big one.Key player
Graham Wagg, at 32, can look back on a career with some ups and downs but 2015 was one of his best with 838 Championship runs – including a double century against Surrey – and 45 wickets, second to Michael Hogan. A repeat would make Croft’s job much easier as he tries to introduce a more settled approach.Bright young thing
Aneurin Donald was named after the great Welsh politician Aneurin Bevan, architect of the National Health Service, so he should have just the attributes to return Glamorgan to rude health. Donald’s career is still in its infancy – he was not even a regular pick in England’s U-19 World Cup side – but every sign of development for this young batsman will be lapped up.ESPNcricinfo verdict
Morris has stoutly suggested that promotion is a possibility, but with only one side going up it is hard to agree with him. Signs that Cardiff is embracing T20 would be a breakthrough.Bet365 odds: Specsavers Championship, Div 2: 10/1; NatWest Blast n/a; Royal London Cup 25/1

McCullum receives Sir Richard Hadlee Medal

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been named the winner of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for 2014-15 at the New Zealand Cricket Awards in Auckland

The big winners

Sir Richard Hadlee Medal – Brendon McCullum
International Women’s Player of the Year – Suzie Bates
Redpath Cup (batting) – Kane Williamson
Winsor Cup (bowling) – Trent Boult
ANZ Twenty20 International Player of the Year – Kane Williamson
ANZ ODI Player of the Year – Kane Williamson
ANZ Test Player of the Year – Kane Williamson
Domestic Cricketer of the Year (men) – Andrew Ellis
Domestic Cricketer of the Year (women) – Amy Satterthwaite
Best Sutcliffe Award – Ross Dykes

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been named the winner of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for 2014-15, while Kane Williamson swooped up the awards for Twenty20 international player of the year, ODI player of the year, Test player of the year, as well as the Redpath Cup for First Class batting at the New Zealand Cricket Awards in Auckland. It marked the first time that the recipient of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal did not clinch any of the other major awards.Left-arm quick Trent Boult, the joint leading wicket-taker of the World Cup, was awarded the Winsor Cup for First Class bowling, while New Zealand Women’s captain Suzie Bates was named International Women’s Player of the Year.McCullum, who led New Zealand to their first ever World Cup final, had also been named the New Zealand sportsman of the year back in February – the first cricketer to win the title since 1991. A press release from NZC stated that McCullum received the medal for “not only his contribution as a batsman but also his role as an inspirational leader for the Blackcaps during the past 12 months.”New Zealand enjoyed unprecedented success under McCullum in 2014, winning five Tests from nine matches, a national record. It included series victories against India and West Indies, as well as a drawn series against Pakistan in the UAE. McCullum scored 1164 Test runs – the most by a New Zealand batsman in a calendar year, including his country’s first ever triple-century, against India at the Basin Reserve. In the third Test against Pakistan in Sharjah in November, McCullum blasted a 188-ball 202, ensuring the visitors leveled the series with an innings-and-80-run win. He capped off a fine year by scoring 195 against Sri Lanka in Christchurch, where he also knocked off the record for the fastest hundred by a New Zealand player in Tests, off 74 balls. That innings also ensured that McCullum become the first ever New Zealand batsman to amass 1000 Test runs in a calendar year.During the World Cup, McCullum’s aggressive captaincy and rapid knocks at the top of the order helped New Zealand to eight consecutive victories, including hard-fought wins against Australia in the group stage, and South Africa in the semi-final. It earned him a place in both the ICC as well as ESPNcricinfo’s team of the tournament.Williamson had a fairly quiet World Cup – 234 runs from nine matches – but his fine form in the months leading up to it did not go unnoticed. He hit four Test tons in 2014-15, including a career-best 242 not out against Sri Lanka and was also one of three New Zealand players to be included in the ICC Test team of the year.”I feel fortunate, but also bad, in some ways, to receive these awards,” Williamson said, referring to New Zealand’s defeat in the final at the MCG. “We had a great World Cup campaign. Obviously we didn’t go all the way, but we played the kind of cricket we wanted to, led by Brendon.”Cricket is very fickle and some days you score runs and some days you don’t and that’s the nature of it. It feels nice to have contributed at some stage of the season and you always want to do more. It’s nice to have scored a few runs and be a part of it throughout the season.”

Bengal nearly through to knockouts

Bengal surpassed their target of 122 in the 26th over, with openers Shreevats Goswami and Arindam Das scoring fifties.Bengal chose to field and Laxmi Shukla and offspinner Saurashish Lahiri did not let any substantial partnerships flourish, apart from the sixth-wicket stand of 49 runs between Manisankar Murasingh (45) and Rajib Datta (19). Tripura were reeling at 50 for 5 in the 20th over before Murasingh and Datta took them to 99. Three wickets apiece from Shukla and Lahiri meant Tripura could not go beyond 121.Bengal were hardly bothered in the chase, apart from the wicket of Arindam for 51. He added 104 with Goswami, who carried on to remain unbeaten on 51.Bengal are on the top of the table with three wins from as many games.Assam strengthened their chances of reaching the knockouts, and ended Jharkhand’s, with a seven-wicket win in Kolkata. Assam’s top and middle order ensured they didn’t stutter much in their chase of 192 after Saurabh Tiwary’s hundred.Jharkhand were tottering at 19 for 5 after Arup Das removed the top order and Abu Nechim got two batsmen caught behind. Tiwary rescued them with 107 off 125 balls even though he didn’t get much support at the other end. SP Gautam accompanied him with a patient 11 off 43 before the main contribution came from No. 9 Rahul Shukla, who scored 39. Tiwary’s second List A hundred meant Jharkhand got close to 200. Arup finished with 3 for 16, and Nechim and Syed Mohammed picked two each.Assam’s chase was led by fifties from Dheeraj Jadhav (68) and Sibsankar Roy (62). They put on 117 for the second wicket before Jaskaran broke the stand. They were eventually steered home by Arun Karthik and Syed.South ZoneBoth of Thursday’s matches in Secunderabad were washed out without a ball being bowled, with Karnataka and Goa progressing into the knockouts. The winner of the match between Andhra and Tamil Nadu could have joined Goa – who lost to Hyderabad in Hyderabad – on 12 points, but with both having lost to Goa, they wouldn’t have progressed as the head-to-head result is used to separate teams on equal points. Instead, the washout meant Andhra and Tamil Nadu took two points each and finished on 10 apiece. The other match in Secunderabad, between Karnataka and Kerala, was also washed out. Karnataka finished the zonal stage unbeaten, with 18 points from five matches.Hyderabad pulled off a consolation win to pick up their first points of the tournament, beating Goa by seven wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Having chosen to bowl, Hyderabad bowled Goa out for 170 in just 33.3 overs, with left-arm seamer Chama Milind picking up four wickets. Five Goa batsmen crossed 20, but no one converted that to anything substantial, Sagun Kamat top-scoring with 30.Hyderabad began their reply sedately, and they moved to 67 in 17 overs before they lost their second wicket. Thereafter, Hanuma Vihari and Dwaraka Ravi Teja accelerated, adding 91 for the third wicket before Vihari fell for a 84-ball 67 in the 32nd over, with victory a mere 13 runs away. The win arrived just four balls later, with Ravi Teja finishing unbeaten on a 44-ball 51.Central ZoneA maiden List A five-wicket haul from medium-pacer Swapnil Bandiwar helped Vidarbha sail into the knockouts with a nine-wicket win over Uttar Pradesh in Nagpur. The match was a straight shootout for second place on the Central Zone table, and everything went right for Vidarbha right from the moment they chose to bowl. Uttar Pradesh slipped to 42 for 6 in 15.3 overs, with Bandiwar taking the first four wickets, and it took an unbeaten 36 from their No. 7 Akshdeep Nath to take their score past 100. They finished on 112, and were bowled out in 37 overs.Vidarbha’s chase was stress-free, with openers Faiz Fazal and Jitesh Sharma putting on 88 in 24.3 overs. Jitesh was dismissed for 43, while Fazal continued to finish unbeaten on 56 off 95 balls, with six fours and a six.Rapid hundreds from Ashok Menaria (103*) and Arjit Gupta (107) gave Rajasthan a 77-run win in the dead rubber against Madhya Pradesh in Nagpur. Menaria and Gupta struck 26 boundaries together to charge them to 316 as Rajasthan registered their first win and MP finished last without a win.Rajasthan were 83 for 4, in the 23rd over, out of which Pranay Sharma scored 60 before Menaria and Gupta got together to score their maiden List A hundreds. Menaria’s unbeaten knock came off 89 balls with four fours and seven sixes, and Gupta took only 65 deliveries for his 107, which featured eight fours and seven sixes.MP lost two early wickets and were led by opener Mohnish Mishra (36) briefly. Their only hope was the 85-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Harpreet Singh (49) and Anand Bais (42) as no other substantial partnership flourished. Lower-order contributions also came from Rameez Khan (29*) and Ankit Sharma (31) but they were all out for 239 in the 47th over. Pankaj Singh ended with figures of 3 for 35.

ECB defends Moeen's 'Save Gaza' wristband

Moeen Ali’s wearing of a wristband during the second Investec Test between England and India at the Ageas Bowl protesting about Israel’s military action in Gaza has been defended by the ECB

The ECB has defended Moeen Ali for wearing wristbands with the slogans “Save Gaza” and “Free Palestine” during the third Investec Test between England and India at The Ageas Bowl.Moeen, a devout Muslim who welcomes the position of role-model and says he wears a long beard as he “wants people to know I am a Muslim”, first wore the wrist bands when batting in England’s first innings. He had not informed the ECB that he was going to wear them and continued to wear them in the field on the second evening. He has not been asked to remove them, but he could face sanctions from the ICC if they decide he has contravened their clothing and equipment regulations.According to section F of the relevant ICC code: “Players and team officials shall not be permitted to wear, display or otherwise convey messages through arm bands or other items affixed to clothing or equipment unless approved in advance by the player or team official’s Board. Approval shall not be granted for messages which relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes.”An ICC spokesman confirmed they were investigating the matter. Moeen, playing just his fifth Test, faces a maximum penalty of a fine of up to 50 per cent of his match fee if he is deemed to have committed a Level One offence. But an ECB spokesman insisted Moeen’s stance was “humanitarian not political” and stated that “the ECB do not believe he has committed any offence.” It was also pointed out that, on the third day of the current Test, the entire England team, Moeen included, will wear shirts sporting the Help for Heroes logo. Help for Heroes describes itself as “a UK military charity… formed to help those wounded in Britain’s current conflicts.”There will also be a minute’s silence observed by both teams to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War at 10.56am.

Dhoni can lead India for three-four years – Fleming

Stephen Fleming feels that MS Dhoni can lead his country for another three to four years but is not sure whether he will be able to do so across Tests, ODIs and T20s given the amount of cricket India play

ESPNcricinfo staff03-May-2014

Stephen Fleming on MS Dhoni: ‘I don’t know how long he will be playing all three formats. It’s pretty hard as India have such a tight schedule’•BCCI

Stephen Fleming, the Chennai Super Kings coach and former New Zealand captain, feels that MS Dhoni can lead his country for another three to four years but is not sure whether he will be able to do so across Tests, ODIs and T20s given the amount of cricket India play.”I haven’t spoken to him on this issue. But he is in fine shape and if he is fit, he can continue to lead for at least a good three to four years,” Fleming told . “Having said that, I don’t know how long he will be playing all three formats. It’s pretty hard as India have such a tight schedule.Dhoni has been India’s captain in limited-overs cricket since 2007 and in Tests since 2008. He has led his country in 53 Tests, 159 ODIs and 48 T20 internationals. No one has captained India in as many Tests and T20s, and only Mohammad Azharuddin led in more one-dayers than Dhoni has.Dhoni will turn 33 in July. In January 2012, he had said he might have to give up one of the formats if he was to lead India’s World Cup defence in 2015. Such a decision would be made only at the end of 2013, he had said then.Fleming said that an international captain could have issues if he led for more than four years, but added that this did not seem to apply to Dhoni. “Dhoni and Graeme Smith have been exceptions, but I feel that an international captain has a shelf-life of four years. After that it is easier to get back as another normal cricketer; if you have been the leader for too long, then it becomes difficult once you leave the job. You tend to miss the decision-making authority and stuff like that. In fact, I faced similar problems after I quit captaincy.”Dhoni’s leadership style had suited the Indian team very well over the years, Fleming said. “Indians look for consistency and have a pattern. They have such talents that on a given day, some of them can single-handedly win matches. You don’t need too dynamic or too radical thought-processes when you have players like [Virat] Kohli, Dhoni. In the case of the New Zealand team, Brendon [McCullum] has to be a bit dynamic and try a different strategy as they don’t have a talent pool like India.”Apart from his India responsibilities, Dhoni has also been Super Kings’ captain right from the inaugural IPL in 2008. Fleming has also been involved with the franchise since then, first as a player for the 2008 season and thereafter as coach. He said he had tried to ensure Dhoni enjoyed his time in franchise cricket while taking a breather from India duties. “What I try to provide MS is with two months of enjoyment, so that he can come into the Chennai side having taken a break from the Indian team. He loves his game and looks a pretty comfortable man winning games for Chennai consistently.”

Ryder dropped for Wellington Test

Jesse Ryder and Doug Bracewell will not be considered for the second Test against India in Wellington, New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has said

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Feb-2014

Jesse Ryder’s international career has hit a roadblock again•AFP

Jesse Ryder and Doug Bracewell will not be considered for the second Test against India in Wellington, New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has said. Ryder and Bracewell, who were in the squad for the first Test, are under investigation by New Zealand Cricket for staying out late at an Auckland bar the night before that match began.”We’ll be naming our second Test side tomorrow or maybe later on today and neither Jesse Ryder nor Doug Bracewell will be available for selection,” Hesson said.Bracewell suffered a broken foot during that period which ruled him out of any cricket for a while. He returned to his hometown Napier, while Ryder made an unbeaten century for Otago in an ongoing Plunket Shield match against Central Districts in Nelson.Hesson declined to say anything on the duo’s future while the investigation was underway but added that he expected players to make “good decisions” about their preparation ahead of a game.”There’s an investigation taking place and we’ll let that run its course before making any bold statements about that sort of thing. Once we get the full information and facts, we’ll be in a far better position to make a statement. It’s important we don’t jump to conclusions without getting the full facts.”We need to make sure all our players prepare themselves accordingly for Test cricket and at the moment we don’t have confidence that that’s the case.”We have faith in our players that they make good decisions around their preparation. We’re dealing with grown men so if a player was to have a beer with their meal before a game we don’t have an issue with that at all. These are grown men who can make decisions. There’s a bit difference between that and what occurred the night before the Test.”Bracewell and Ryder have had a history of disciplinary issues. During the series against South Africa in March 2012, both were dropped from the ODI team after breaking team protocol, following the match in Napier. In November last year, Bracewell was dropped from the Central Districts side for an HRV Cup game after a late night out.The ODI against South Africa in Napier in March 2012 was also the last match Ryder played for New Zealand until his recent comeback against West Indies. Following the incident, the batsman decided to take an indefinite break from cricket. In March 2013, Ryder was assaulted outside a bar in Christchurch and spent two days in a medically induced coma before making a recovery. In August 2013, he was given a retrospective six-month ban for failing a routine drug test while playing domestic cricket.
