Arsenal should sign Trossard as Welbeck replacement

Arsenal had another day to forget in the Premier League yesterday as they were beaten 1-0 by Marco Silva’s Everton at Goodison Park. The North London club need to seek immediate improvements if they are to make it into the Champions League, with very little room for error.

Unai Emery must already have one eye on the summer transfer window with reinforcements required at the heart of the defence, out on the wing and at left-back.

According to football.london, the Gunners appear to have their eyes on Belgium international Leandro Trossard.

Trossard is arguably one of the most exciting attackers outside of the Premier League as he’s been on absolute fire over in his home country and in Europe, having produced 19 goals and eight assists. He can operate in a number of different positions, including out wide or at the pinnacle of the attack, so he could be very useful.

Sven Mislintat was reportedly (as per Sporza, via Metro) eyeing the attacker as a potential replacement for Danny Welbeck back in October of last year.

Indeed, with Danny Welbeck’s contract running out at the end of the season and nothing happening in terms of him being offered a new contract, perhaps Trossard will be brought in as a replacement for the Englishman.

It’s safe to say that the Emirates can expect a lot of fireworks if the Belgian rocks up in the English capital this summer as he’s quick, skilful, creative and he’s prolific in front of goal. He could take the Gunners’ attack to the next level in the present and he has the potential to become a future star in the Premier League.

Manchester City: Kyle Walker is a liability and must be replaced

Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final proved, once again, that Kyle Walker can’t be trusted in big games. Indeed, Manchester City need to find a replacement for him if they’re to claim as many trophies as they’re capable of in the next few years.

It’s simple, the 28-year-old is a liability in City’s back four. In possession, the one weakness is always him. He gives the ball away far too much under pressure for a Pep Guardiola player, but it’s even worse how he has moments of madness that nobody quite understands.

Whether that be leaving the ball for Claudio Bravo, then watching Will Grigg kick City out of the FA Cup last year, or the poor excuse of a headbutt against Brighton, he has these moments that only he’s capable of in this otherwise calm Blues side.

It’s not good enough.

Yes, he’s probably as fast an Olympic sprinter, sprays the ball to the opposite fullback quite well, and wins most of his defensive duels, but there’s just something about him that’s not right in the head. He seems like the stereotypical footballer – all brawn, no brains.

On most occasions, he’s a solid full-back with the energy to cover the distance Guardiola demands, but considering he’s City’s best right-back, losing his head in big games isn’t acceptable. The club, once again, find themselves needing new full-backs on both sides.

Walker shouldn’t be written off, of course. He’s still a top player, but in the summer, they need another full-back to take over when brains are required and nerves have to be held.

The Chalkboard: How Forest can repeat Derby success against Stoke

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest are currently a club on a high having beaten bitter rivals Derby County by a 1-0 scoreline at the City Ground on Monday. Martin O’Neill must quickly refocus his side though as they face a tough test against Stoke City on Saturday.

In order to gain a positive result against the Potters, the Reds must stick to an effective gameplan and reproduce the levels of commitment and discipline that they displayed against the Rams.

On the chalkboard

Having been relegated from the Premier League last season, Stoke will have expected to compete for promotion from the Championship this time around. Things have not gone to plan for the club though, who currently find themselves in the bottom half of the second tier.

Who do you want to see promoted this year? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have picked their 3 favoured teams in the video below…

However, Forest cannot afford to underestimate Nathan Jones’ side who still possess a lot of attacking quality. What’s more, defeat for Forest could seriously harm their hopes of reaching the play-offs.

In order to get a positive result, O’Neill must seek to replicate the most positive aspects of his side’s performance against Derby.

Playing to their strengths

On Monday, Forest were incredibly diligent. They were well-organised and compact throughout. They also demonstrated an admirable work rate to ensure that Frank Lampard’s side were never allowed to become too comfortable in possession.

Forest also used their key men well. Play was effectively and consistently channeled through Joe Lolley who has the quality to hurt the opposition in the final third. They also played to their physical and aerial strengths – it was unsurprising, therefore, that Yohan Benalouane’s match-winning goal came from a set piece.

If Forest are able to shine in these all-important areas again on Saturday then they’re likely to return from the bet365 stadium with all three points in tow.

  • Argentine forced off against Toronto
  • Set to be handed another rest
  • Others need to step up in his absence
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Argentine superstar has netted 11 goals for the Florida-based outfit through just 12 appearances – helping them to Leagues Cup glory and a place in the U.S. Open Cup final. He is, however, struggling with a knock that forced him to be replaced just 37 minutes into a 4-0 win over Toronto FC.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi will now be handed another rest, with a derby date against neighbours Orlando City next on the agenda, meaning that somebody else will be required to step up and lead by example. Taylor did that against Toronto, as he bagged a brace, but the Finland international midfielder concedes that he is no Messi.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Taylor has said of trying to learn from Messi in a bid to cover his absence: “I don’t think there’s much advice he can give on copying his play because no one can copy his play. I will try to do it again, but I won’t promise it. It’s not like Messi, obviously. It's very important. I mean right, it's the most important player for us. But we have to play sometimes without them and it's important for the rest of us to step up and bring in the results as well.”

Jordi Alba is also nursing an injury, making him a doubt for a cup final clash with the Houston Dynamo on September 27. Fitness setbacks have come at the worst possible time for Inter Miami as, alongside their shot at more major silverware, they are now just five points adrift of the MLS Eastern Conference play-off places with six regular season fixtures left to take in.

Jose Mourinho vs Arsene Wenger: A war of words

The managers will go head-to-head for the final time in the league this week. Goal looks back at the fierce words they have exchanged over the years

As Jose Mourinho paid respect to Arsene Wenger after his imminent Arsenal exit was announced, it seemed to confirm a recent shift in the relationship between the managers.

The Manchester United boss spoke of his "respect" for his Gunners counterpart  when asked for his reaction to the news the Frenchman's reign in north London will come to an end at the end of the season.

At first, it sounded like a rare moment of diplomacy from Mourinho as one of his favourite verbal sparring partners bows out of the Premier League. However, having heard Wenger admit his "support" for the Portuguese and parise his team earlier this season, it could be that the animosity that has separated them over the years has died down.

United host Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday in a game that will see the legendary managers go head-to-head on the field for the last time.

Here, Goal looks at the finest moments off of it.

Getty ImagesWenger's whatabouteryFacing criticism for fielding an all-foreign team against Crystal Palace in February 2005, Wenger hit back with a dig at Chelsea's policy under Mourinho: "Take what Arsenal and Chelsea have won in the past eight years. I go with reality, with the football we play and the challenge we have ahead. I don't see especially that Chelsea play more English players than we do. Who have they produced, homegrown? Just one, John Terry."AdvertisementGetty Images‘Mourinho is a danger!’

The following August, a more subtle hint was directed towards coaches of the Portuguese’s ilk, when Wenger took a stand against more defensive approaches in football.

"I know we live in a world where we have only winners and losers, but once a sport encourages teams who refuse to take the initiative, the sport is in danger."

Getty ImagesWenger The Voyeur?

Two months later, Mourinho sniped back, suggesting Wenger had a rather ominous obsession with the Blues.

“Wenger has a real problem with us and I think he is what you call in England ‘a voyeur’. He is someone who likes to watch other people. There are some guys who, when they are at home, have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. Wenger must be one of them – it is a sickness. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea.”

BEN STANSALLThat’s stupid!

The Frenchman was irked by such a suggestion and hit out at Mourinho as "stupid", even considering taking legal action against him.

"I find it out of order, disconnected with reality and disrespectful. I will see if I take any action. I don't know yet but I will leave that door open. I don't know what I said that was malicious.

“When you give success to stupid people, it makes them more stupid sometimes and not more intelligent.”

Victoria closed in on an outright victory over their nearest challenger South Australia on the penultimate night of the floodlit Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval.Victoria saw off four South Australia batsmen before stumps, two falling to Fawad Ahmed in a spell of 2 for 10 that was both threatening and economical. The hosts’ captain Travis Head (35*) is left with an enormous task to pull his side out of the mire. There had been plenty of purpose to Victoria’s batting earlier in the day as they set up a declaration. Peter Handscomb glided to an attractive century while Glenn Maxwell contributed his second half century of the match, a nicely modulated 63 from 109 deliveries.Matthew Wade and Dan Christian then accelerated, adding 70 in 13.3 overs before Victoria’s captain decided he had a sufficient lead. Should the Bushrangers win, the prospect of a competition final played in Alice Springs will become a distinct possibility.
