Tottenham fans hail Serge Aurier after beating Crystal Palace

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham were in impressive form on Saturday as they saw off the challenge of Crystal Palace in emphatic fashion.

The Lilywhites were able to achieve a 4-0 victory as all four strikes came in the first half.

Son Heung-min netted twice whilst an own goal from Patrick van Aanholt and a strike from Erik Lamela settled proceedings.

However, another player to particularly impress was Serge Aurier. He claimed an assist during the game as well as making two interceptions and three tackles according to WhoScored.

It was a well-rounded performance from the Ivorian, who consequently earned praise from a host of Spurs fans on Twitter.

One asked if the club could erect a statue for the defender whilst another suggested the right-back was quality.

A further individual said the former PSG stepped up as another described his efforts as a killer performance.

Aurier was starting for the very first time in the league this season and will undoubtedly be in the running for more appearances over the coming weeks.

Kieran Trippier left for Atletico Madrid in the summer so there is a definite opening for him.

Leeds United fans are fuming with Jack Harrison once again after Charlton defeat

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United missed the chance to take the sole lead of the Championship on Saturday afternoon as Charlton Athletic condemned them to their first away defeat of the season.

Against the run of play, the home side scored from a corner in what would be the game’s only goal of the match.

The Whites’ goalkeeper Kiko Casilla parried a volley from Tom Lockyer into the path of Macauley Bonne, who somehow scrambled the ball home.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men had the chance to salvage something late on, but Addicks shot-stopper Dillon Phillips produced an outstanding save to deny Adam Forshaw from close range.

Manchester City loanee Jack Harrison started at left-wing again, looking for just his second goal of the season and first since the opening day, but he failed to live up to expectations – which has left many of the Elland Road faithful fuming at him for the second time in as many weekends.

Indeed, Leeds fans weren’t happy with his performance against Derby County and they’ve once again let rip having been disappointed with his display at The Valley. One supporter said he was ‘atrocious’ as he can’t pass or shoot while another claimed that the 22-year-old should be dropped because he offers nothing at all.

A further member of the Whites’ crowd believes that Leeds won’t get promoted if Harrison continues to start games for them this season.

Arsenal should move Nacho Monreal on after poor display against Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

Nacho Monreal has been a great servant for Arsenal over the years.

Since joining from La Liga outfit Malaga in 2013, the former Spain international has made 251 appearances for the Gunners and contributed to three FA Cup wins during that time.

However, he is now 33 years old and is not getting any younger. Recent speculation has linked him with a move to Real Sociedad before the end of the transfer window, and it is now even thought that the north London outfit are willing to let the defender leave if he wishes to do so.

AFTV’s Robbie has his say on Arsenal’s owners in the video below…

Following his performance on Saturday against Liverpool, it may be the perfect time for the two to part ways.

Monreal lined up at left-back as part of a back four against the Reds and contributed little to his team, whether it be in defence or going forward.

Throughout the game, he was unable to create a single chance or complete a single dribble during the 90 minutes, which you would hope your full-back would be able to do at least once these days. 1 shot off target and a 75% pass accuracy, which only Ainsley Maitland-Niles was unable to do better than, is not good enough either.

Against Liverpool, teams will generally be on the back foot, and so strong defensive performances are required. However, Monreal’s showing in that department left a lot to be desired. He made no tackles during the match, with only centre-back David Luiz also drawing a blank. It is easier said than done to face Mohamed Salah, but a few challenges is surely the minimum required.

With such poor stats, it was no surprise to see him pick up a WhoScored rating of 5.77, the lowest of any player on the pitch. Whilst it may have been against the European champions, Monreal seemed out of his depth and his best now looks well and truly behind him. Amidst those recent aforementioned rumours, now is as good a time as any to move him on.

Scout report: Dinamo Zagreb’s Dani Olmo

[ad_pod ]

Dani Olmo is not a name that many will be overly familiar with.

In fact, it’s a name not many outside of Croatia would have heard of before. And why would they? After all, we’re talking about a young 21-year-old Spanish midfielder playing his football for Dinamo Zagreb in the capital of Croatia, a city of only about 800k people in total.

But something about this kid oozes potential. He is a special talent that’s been already catching the eye of some big fish around Europe. But who exactly is Olmo and what makes him so special?

The young Spaniard is the product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, a place which he joined from their heated city rivals Espanyol. It didn’t take long for him to make a case for himself but for one reason or another he decided to leave Catalonia for Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia’s biggest and most successful club, in a rather surprising move.

For all of Dinamo Zagreb’s pedigree within the borders of their homeland, they’ve never advanced beyond the group stages of the Champions League.

It’s safe to say that, despite their domestic glory, they’re hardly a club for the biggest of stages. But Olmo looks to be a player for exactly that type of scenario.

Even at such a young age, he is exceptionally skilful and technically gifted. The numbers clearly support this thesis as Olmo registered a total of 12 goals and nine assists in 44 games across all competitions in the 2018/19 season. But as good as the figures make him look, especially considering these are the numbers of a midfielder, they hardly do him justice.

His passing capabilities vary from game to game, but according to the stats provided by Wyscout, his average completion rate stands at 77.9%. But that doesn’t really give us the full picture. Upon analysing those statistics in more detail, we can see that he also sends 5.66 passes into the final third and 2.7 into the box.

What makes him particularly indispensable is the fact that he can fuel the build-up as well as set up his teammates with fantastic passes into the danger zones. He will regularly drop deep into midfield to help progress the ball forward and his resistance to the press means he rarely loses the ball.

Let’s see how that translates onto the pitch. In the example below, we can see him initiating a swift transition despite being collapsed upon by multiple markers. His exceptional dribbling ability, which averages at around 7.24 dribbles per game, ensures he can keep the ball, shake off his marker and then play a through ball to his teammate.

We can also see that he is dangerous even when contained to a relatively small area of operation. This trait also complements his great awareness and creation of space. For that reason, he excels inside the final third and is fantastic at setting up his teammates.

In the next example, we can see him between the lines, receiving the ball from one of his teammates. The opposing defenders once again try to squeeze the space but their efforts are undone by the awareness and intelligence of Olmo.

The 5ft 10 midfielder is quite the asset going forward by either assisting the ball progression and fueling the build-up, starting swift transitions and distributing killer passes in and around the opposition’s box. But there are more strings to the bow of this gem beyond his attacking prowess. In fact he is also quite efficient when defending, too.

One of his strongest defensive traits is his ability to win the ball back and turn defence into attack within seconds. Last season, he averaged 6.57 recoveries of the ball per game, with 58.6% happening in the opposition’s half. He also wins an average of 57.8% of all defensive duels.

At Dinamo Zagreb, his defensive responsibilities vary but are mostly confined to cover shadowing and pressing the opposition in a hunt to retrieve the ball in dangerous positions. Olmo will often be deployed higher up the pitch and tasked to make the opponent either clear the ball blindly or make a risky pass.

But what is even more admirable is the aggressive nature of his defending, meaning that Olmo will always look to track back and participate in his defensive duties. This is especially true if he is the one losing the ball in the first place. An example below shows that kind of a situation unfolding in a game for Dinamo Zagreb.

Even though the young midfielder is still playing his football at a club that may soon become far too small for his appetite, he’s been able to showcase his quality and attract some big suitors.

For now, though, it still remains to be seen what exactly will happen to this Spanish gem in the future, but if these early signs are any indication it seems like it’s going to be a bright one indeed.

Manchester United Transfer Roundup: Maguire fee agreed, Fernandes news, De Gea contract close

[ad_pod ]

Friday’s Manchester United transfer roundup noted an update in the pursuit of a 21-year-old Newcastle midfielder, a prepared offer for a Turkish international and a Brazilian being scouted. Today’s edition brings you an agreement for a 26-year-old defender, news on a Portuguese star and a goalkeeper’s new contract.

United agree Maguire fee

According to The Sun, United and Leicester City have agreed a fee for England centre-back Harry Maguire. The Red Devils will apparently pay £60m upfront for the former Sheffield United defender, with an extra £20m to be given in add-ons.

Fernandes news

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been pushing to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes but is having difficulties getting the Old Trafford outfit’s board to increase their offer for the Portuguese international according to Saturday’s print edition of Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness). The sale of Paul Pogba would force the club to up the bid the report adds.

De Gea contract close

David De Gea is expected to sign a new contract once Manchester United return from their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia according to The Telegraph. The Spain international will sign a new long-term deal that will likely be worth more than £350,000 a week.

Arsenal: Fans take to Twitter in delight at Everton Soares rumours

Fabrizio Romano of Calcio Mercato has claimed that AC Milan are not in for Everton Soares, although Arsenal are.

The Brazilian winger was reported by Globo Esporte (via the Daily Mail) some days ago now to be on the Gunners’ radar, with technical director Edu understood to be keen. Alongside Peru’s Paulo Guerrero, Everton top-scored at the Copa America with three goals and he opened the scoring in the final of the tournament as his country went on to win it on home soil.

According to the report from Calcio Mercato, Milan had been looking at the player for a long time, although seeing as Leonardo has left the club and they won’t be competing in European competition next season, everything has changed for the potential move of Everton to the San Siro.

It remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal will be able to capitalise on this one, but with Fabrizio Romano claiming that the Gunners are interested after the young Brazilian’s Copa America success, these fans are getting excited.

Roma lining up Alderweireld offer this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Roma want to sign Toby Alderweireld this summer, per Gazzetta dello Sport.

What’s the word?

The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has a release clause in his contract of €30m (£26.9m), per the aforementioned report.

But, while Roma are interested in acquiring the Belgium international, the club are not minded to pay such a fee for the 30-year-old.

Gazzetta claims that the clause expires on July 25th and Roma will not table a bid until after that date, when they will attempt to negotiate a deal worth around €12m (£10.7m).

The offer of a three-year contract could convince him to take a hit on his current wages of €4m (£3.5m) annually.

Gazzetta also reports that midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo could be included in any deal as a sweetener.

A joke

Roma making a bid worth £10.7m in straight cash is a slap in the face to Tottenham.

Alderweireld has been one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League in recent seasons and made a total of 50 appearances last season as Spurs reached the Champions League final and finished fourth domestically.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Bear in mind, too, that the clause that he does have is still remarkably cheap in this transfer window, particularly when it is compared with a player like Harry Maguire, who has been valued at around £90m by Leicester City.

Admittedly, Alderweireld’s contract does expire next summer, leading to the potential of him departing on a free, but one cannot foresee chairman Daniel Levy accepting any bids below the player’s release clause in this transfer window.

He is worth so much more.

What a signing: West Ham fans lavish praise on Fornals after Spain U21 goal

‘Chin up and go again’ – Palace fans react to Wan-Bissaka’s England U21 display

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans have given a mixed response to defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s performance and last minute own goal at the U21 European Championships on Tuesday.

England were leading heading into the final two minutes of normal time against France before they were pegged back with a minute remaining.

Then, in the fifth minute of added time Wan-Bissaka turned into his own net after attempting to clear an effort from a French corner.

Many Palace fans believe the performance has taken value off of the right-back’s reported £50m upfront price tag.

But there are also those who suggest he is still a top prospect and that the game was a mere blip in the 21-year-old’s career.

The Englishman has been the subject of speculation surrounding his future at Selhurst Park amid a bid from Manchester United worth around £50million.

And last night’s display added fuel to the fire for those criticising him as well as those defending him.

Here is just a selection of the reaction…
