ACC struggles to add Afghanistan to the Asia Cup

Afghanistan’s rise to official ODI status, and its qualification for the recent World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, is the crowning success of the Asian Cricket Council’s development programs

Siddarth Ravindran in Dambulla18-Jun-2010Afghanistan’s rise to official ODI status, and their qualification for the recent ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, is the crowning success of the Asian Cricket Council’s development programs. But so far the council has been unable to find them a place in the Asia Cup, which could hinder the country’s future development. The problems start with scheduling. The Asia Cup has had something of a rocky existence, being played at irregular intervals and tacked on as an afterthought to the already jam-packed schedules of the big four of Asian cricket. “It is an uphill task, it is difficult to find a time when all boards are completely free,” Syed Ashraful Huq, the ACC’s chief executive, told Cricinfo. The current competition needed Bangladesh to split their tour of England into Test and limited-overs legs, and Pakistan to push back their series against Australia by ten days. Including Afghanistan would have bloated the tournament’s duration, a no-no given the small window available to the Test countries. The other problem is money. The tournament isn’t very appealing to the four boards since they only get a participating fee, which Huq called a ‘small amount’ (he declined to reveal the actual numbers).Afghanistan don’t pull in the crowds either, making them unattractive to broadcasters. “It’s a matter of monetising those Afghan fans,” the ACC’s media manager, Shahriar Khan, said. “At the end of the day Bangladesh may lose but they have got 80 million people who are going to tune in to watch. Afghanistan may win but they haven’t got that many who will tune in, they are an unknown territory for the broadcasters.”The Asia Cup’s organisers have managed to secure its future as a biennial competition until 2014 through a five-year broadcast deal with Nimbus Sport. “By doing that, we have a commitment from the four boards that they will play,” Huq said. But Afghanistan’s participation in the next two tournaments is still unlikely as of now, and vital opportunities to play against the big boys could be lost. The issue takes on an added significance since Afghanistan will need to re-earn their ODI status after 2014. If they are unsuccessful, they won’t be eligible for any subsequent Asia Cups.Afghanistan joined the ACC back in 2001; have been participating in the organisation’s top tournament for associate countries, the ACC Trophy Elite since 2004, and are the current holders of the title. “We are the main driving force over there,” Huq said. “We conduct all their camps, send them coaches, they have been participating in our age-group tournaments, in our ACC Trophy, that is how they graduated.”The jubilant Afghanistan team runs on to the field after sealing their berth in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament•Associated PressAdding to the body’s satisfaction over Afghanistan’s progress is the fact that the team is not overrun by expats from Test playing nations, as has been the case in some of the smaller Asian countries like the UAE.”The thing is they are Afghan, other sides have expats, nothing wrong with that, it’s just at the development body level in Asia, the expats who have played are Indians, Pakistanis and Sri Lankans and they have dominated,” Shahriar said. “If you expand that beyond them into the native community via schools, and education boards, not just the minority but everyone could play.”Aside from Afghanistan, there is heartening news from countries that aren’t usually associated with cricket, like Bhutan, who are regular finalists in the age-group tournaments conducted by the ACC. “Bhutan is very interesting because they are about 3000 active cricketers which actually represents a huge percentage of the about 70,000 school-going children in the country,” Khan said. And then there’s China, at the heart of cricket’s dream to expand in Asia, with its 1.3 billion people sending sports administrators’ pulses racing. China has seen growth in the number of clubs (78 according to the ACC website, compared to none two years ago) and in the number of grounds.Former Pakistan fast bowler Rashid Khan has been working with Chinese cricketers for more than three-and-a-half years now, and Pakistan’s cricket ambassador to China, former captain Javed Miandad, invited them over for coaching camps and matches in Lahore and Karachi earlier this year.Huq remains hugely positive of China’s potential. “They didn’t even know what a bat looked like four years ago, now you see the way they play, give them another five years they will compete at a very high level.” There’s still a long way to go, though, as performances in recent tournaments have been poor and China languish near the bottom of the ACC rankings, below the likes of Bahrain.Even if they, and other promising countries like Nepal and Hong Kong, follow the strides made by Afghanistan, they will need more willpower from the ACC, an organisation that exists to promote and develop Asian cricket, to provide them top-flight cricket opportunities.

Everton linked with Amuzu transfer

With just five goals scored in their previous seven Premier League games, the upcoming January transfer window could provide the Merseyside club with a good opportunity to add some attacking reinforcements to their squad and potentially put their poor run of form behind them.

Taking this into account, it seems as though the Toffees already have their eye on securing a new attacking talent next month.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from L’avenir.net, Everton are interested in signing RSC Anderlecht winger Francis Amuzu.

After joining Anderlecht’s youth system back in April 2015, the 22-year-old has gone on to make a total of 142 appearances for the Belgian club across their youth sides and senior team, scoring 15 goals and providing 15 assists along the way.

So far this season in the Belgian league, the winger has managed to score three goals and provide three assists.

In terms of a potential move to Everton in January, this could give Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri the chance to replicate the same transfer masterclass he and Rafa Benitez pulled off in the summer by signing Demarai Gray, another young winger from a foreign club who has managed to hit the ground running at Goodison Park by scoring five goals and providing two assists in 16 league appearances.

In addition to this, even though he only joined the club in the summer alongside Gray, the fact that Andros Townsend has hit the age of 30, Amuzu could be a suitable long-term replacement for the Englishman on the right-wing.

Moving forward, Everton should definitely explore the possibility of signing Amuzu in January to see if he can spark a bit of life back into Benitez’s squad.

However, with the report saying that Rangers and Wolfsburg are also reportedly interested in signing Amuzu, but that Anderlecht aren’t looking to sell the winger anytime soon, Everton may have a challenge on their hands to secure his signature.

Either way, if Everton don’t end up signing Amuzu in January, they should probably look to sign a defensive player given how they’ve managed to concede 29 goals in their 17 league games this season.

Patrick Vieira must unleash Michael Olise

Last summer saw a complete overhaul of the football side of things at Crystal Palace and it was Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira who was tasked with overseeing it.

One of the biggest jobs he had with his playing staff was making up for the huge amount of first-teamers that he lost without any cash coming in, as seven regular first-team members left at the end of their contracts. One of those to leave was winger Andros Townsend, so the club needed to bring in a replacement wide man.

Vieira opted for young, hungry replacements in the summer to lower the average age of the squad and he settled upon Championship starlet Michael Olise from Reading, sealing an £8m deal for the 19-year-old Frenchman.

Since joining the club, however, Vieira has been protective of his exciting young talent. Olise was handed the number seven shirt, cementing the fact he would have a big role to play in the first-team, and was set to form a formidable front line with Wilfried Zaha and new summer signing Odsonne Edouard.

But as we approach the hectic Christmas schedule and therefore the halfway point of the season, Olise has made just two starts in the Premier League this season. He has made a further nine appearances as a substitute, with both his assists and his sole goal so far coming from the bench.

Veteran forward Jordan Ayew has been the man selected to start on the right wing for the most part, but he has failed to really deliver anything of note this season. In his 14 appearances so far, which consists of 11 starts, the Ghanaian has just one assist. It’s hard to compare their stats this season because of the small sample size on Olise’s side but the most important one is that in 277 minutes of football, Olise has tripled the output of Ayew who’s featured for 889 minutes.

Palace have so far drawn seven league games this season, with only Brighton having shared the points more often. It’s hard to believe that of those seven fixtures having a pacy, tricky winger with an eye for a pass and goal wouldn’t have been the difference between one point or three for the Eagles on at least one occasion. When you consider that Vieira dubbed him “really special” too, there is certainly a big case for his involvement over Ayew in attack.

He has clearly improved already, with his value having improved to £13.5m during his time at Selhurst Park according to Transfermarkt, but he won’t be able to truly develop with drips and drabs of football.

Vieira needs to turn the team’s fortunes around after three consecutive defeats, so it’s time to give the hungry young squad he has built a chance to eat on the pitch.

AND in other news, Why Patrick Vieira must unleash Odsonne Edouard.

Benitez must unleash EFC’s Branthwaite

After a decent start to the season with four wins from their opening six Premier League games, Everton have been on a rather rough run of form by losing five and drawing two of their seven previous league outings.

In those seven previous games, Everton have managed to concede 13 goals in the process, highlighting their defensive frailties at the moment.

This could potentially have something to do with the fact that they’ve had centre-back Yerry Mina out injured with a thigh issue since October.

Taking this into account, now could be the best time for Benitez one of Everton’s young defensive talents who has hardly had a look-in so far this season.

19-year-old centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite has only played 57 minutes of action for Everton this season which came during their 2-1 win against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup.

With recent reports suggesting that Everton will look to send the defender out on loan in January after securing him on a long-term contract, it could be the better option for the Toffees to keep him in the squad but give him some regular Premier League minutes instead of loaning him out

Not only would it be a good time to give Branthwaite his first taste of Premier League action this season to try and fix their recent defensive issues, but it would also give the teenager some useful experience of playing in the top-flight alongside his senior teammates after not making an appearance in the league last year and only making four the season before.

Also, given how Branthwaite has already had some experience of playing in the Championship when he joined Blackburn Rovers on a loan deal last season where he made a total of ten appearances

Labelled as a “terrific footballer” by Steven Pressley – Branthwaite’s former coach at Carlisle United – the defender should be given the chance to see if he can have a positive impact on the team and turn their fortunes around in the league.

If Benitez has no intention of playing him in the league anytime soon, it could be in Branthwaite’s best interest in terms of his development if he did go out on loan to another Championship club and got some regular playing minutes under his belt again.

However, it would be good for the Toffees if they were able to seal his signature on a new long-term deal beforehand as he could end up saving them millions of pounds in potential future transfer fees given his young age if they need to replace the likes of Mina and Michael Keane in the next few years.

With the former linked with a move away, the young Everton defender could be a viable successor.

Skriniar top of Conte’s transfer wishlist

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Milan Skriniar to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Express, who claim that Antonio Conte is keen to bolster his Spurs defence in the winter market, and has placed the Inter Milan centre-back at the top of his January wishlist.

A further report by Football Italia also suggested that the 26-year-old defender – whose contract at the San Siro is set to expire in the summer of 2023 – would be open to a move away from Serie A, while the arrival of Fabio Paratici in north London is also reported to have given Spurs the advantage in the race to sign the Slovakia international this winter.

Alderweireld replacement

It is perhaps one of the worst kept secrets in world football that Tottenham are interested in a deal to sign Skriniar, however, there is a very good reason for the Premier League side’s long-term pursuit of the centre-back – particularly now Conte is at the helm.

Indeed, over his 32 Serie A appearances last season, the £54m-rated defender was in imperious form, helping his side keep 12 clean sheets and scoring three goals, as well as making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 1.5 tackles, 62.6 passes, 2.7 clearances and winning 3.5 duels per game.

These returns saw the player who journalist David Amoyal dubbed a “beast” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him as Conte’s seventh-best performer in Inter’s scudetto-winning campaign.

And, with Toby Alderweireld having left Tottenham last summer, there is very much room for another centre-back at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, particularly if one of either Joe Rodon or Davinson Sanchez, who have both been linked with a January departure, do indeed go on to leave the club next month.

As such, considering just how impressive the £90k-per-week defender who Tibor Goljan claimed has “always been the leader” was for Conte’s Inter last season, in addition to Spurs’ need for an upgrade in the position, it would seem a very wise move indeed for Paratici to do all he can to get a deal over the line for the 26-year-old this January.

AVFC: Fans react to Smith’s training ground routine

A number of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to Dean Smith’s training ground routines during his time in the Midlands, as reported by Ashley Preece.

Smith was relieved of his duties at Bodymoor Heath following a fifth successive Premier League defeat prior to the international break.

He has since taken over at basement side Norwich City, whereas Villa have officially brought in Steven Gerrard from Rangers.

Gerrard took training as Villa manager on Monday and was hands-on during his first session. Preece added that coach Michael Beale, who left Rangers to move south alongside Gerrard, was also very vocal and revealed that winger Trezeguet was back out on the grass following a serious knee injury in April.

Preece also stated that he was intrigued to see if Gerrard has changed the timing of Villa’s sessions, with Smith admitting earlier this year that training began at 12pm.

Villa fans react

Preece’s post on Monday afternoon received plenty of interaction, with many Villa supporters stunned at the 12pm start under Smith and one labelling it as ‘bonkers’, given their total lack of match sharpness during their poor run of form….

Spurs eye big creative solution in Zaniolo

Tottenham Hotspur could end their creative woes with a swoop for Nicolo Zaniolo in January…

What’s the word?

According to Calciomercato.it, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder is facing an uncertain future at AS Roma under former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, with the north Londoners amongst the clubs interested in signing him.

In recent weeks, it’s thought that both player and manager have argued on the training pitch, and since then he has found himself sat on the bench.

Premier League rivals Manchester United are mooted as a potential destination, whilst Serie A giants Juventus are also said to be keen, with Roma valuing the young Italian playmaker at around €40m (£34m).

Creative solution

With Zaniolo falling out of favour in Rome, it would be a wise decision from Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici to launch a move for him this January, rather than waiting until the summer.

Conte desperately needs to find creativity from somewhere, even despite two second-half goals against Leeds United over the weekend. In the first 45 minutes, his side failed to register a shot on target in another half, making it over four hours since their last, prior to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s strike.

They still rank second-last for shots per game (10.3) in the entire Premier League, with only Norwich City (10) below them, whilst they are amongst the six worst teams for expected goals, managing an xG of 13.75.

That’s hardly encouraging reading for a team sitting seventh overall in the table as it suggests that they are somewhat punching above their weight, and sooner or later, that trend will harm them.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-updates-transfers-antonio-conte-thfc” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

There is clearly a problem in attacking midfield and Zaniolo seems primed to repair it, having been likened to the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, who were renowned for their ability to arrive late in the box to score or help set up chances.

His emergence at the Stadio Olimpico once caught the eye of Roma legend Francesco Totti, who claimed that the 22-year-old “plays like a veteran,” before also adding (via the BBC):

“He has explosive strength and technique, and everything it takes to become a truly great player. Don’t let him hear me though. He may yet change course and I don’t want that on my shoulders.”

A serious injury ruined his chances of building on his early-career promise last season as he failed to feature across any competition in 2020/21. In the previous campaign, he delivered eight goals and four assists whilst averaging 2.9 dribbles and 1.2 key passes per game, showing that he likes to drive the ball towards the opposition’s box, where he can quite evidently contribute.

His average of one direct goal contribution every 228 minutes is still vastly superior to that of Giovani Lo Celso, a player who leads the Spurs squad for key chances created per 90 minutes, as he manages a goal or assist once every 338 minutes.

Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, Spurs could make a very shrewd investment in Zaniolo, and of course Conte and Paratici will know him from their time in Italy, so if they want him, they must do all they can to sign him.

He’d be a major upgrade to Lo Celso and the perfect fit in a team crying out for some creativity and guile in the final third.
