Bid expected: Spurs making move to sign their next Gareth Bale

The European Championships are set for a dramatic conclusion this Sunday as England look to put the ghost of 2021 to bed against Spain.

However, away from the two finalists, there have been a plethora of standout players across the last four weeks.

Unsurprisingly, a number of these players have been consistently linked to some of the biggest clubs in Europe, and based on recent reports, Tottenham Hotspur are particularly keen on one player who almost made it to the semi-finals.

Gareth Bale in Tottenham training

The star in question has courted interest from across the continent in recent weeks and has even been compared to a previous Spurs great, Gareth Bale.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Turkey, Tottenham Hotspur are one of several sides interested in signing Galatasaray star Baris Alper Yılmaz.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the story has revealed that Manchester United are keen on the Turkish star, and both teams are expected to make offers in the coming days.

The interest from the Red Devils is far from ideal for Daniel Levy and Co, but the good news is that another report from Turkey earlier this month claimed that the Süper Lig giants would be willing to sell their talented ace for around €30m, which is about £25m.

It's not necessarily cheap, but given his performances last season at the Euros and his comparison to Bale, it may prove to be a bargain in the long term.

Yılmaz's comparisons to Bale

Now, comparing a player that, before this summer, few fans in England would've known much about to one of the greatest British footballers of all time may seem a tad extreme, but there are some similarities.

cristiano-ronaldo-gareth-bale-tottenham-opinion

The original comparison came from Yılmaz's former coach, Ilker Puren, who told GS Gazette (via the Express), "I compare Baris Alper Yilmaz to Gareth Bale in terms of strength. He has the ability to sprint three or four meters after eliminating the opponent with the ball."

That ability to burst past a player before rifling the ball into the top corner was an iconic image of the Welshman's time in the Premier League, and while the Turkish international wasn't quite that deadly at the Euros, he started every game and was a thorn in the side of opposition defenders.

However, it's not just his ability to beat a man and run at goal that has earned him comparisons to the former Real Madrid man; it's also his positional versatility.

Across his career, the Cardiff-born superstar moved from a left-back to a left-sided midfielder before finding his true home on the right wing. Along the way, he also played on the left wing, as a centre-forward, and in midfield at times, and this ability to play almost anywhere on the pitch is something the Turkish international shares with him.

For example, he has started 66 games on the left wing, 64 on the right, ten at right-back, eight at left-back, eight at centre-forward, two in attacking midfield and even one as a second striker.

Lastly, while the comparisons to Bale are certainly exciting, the 24-year-old dynamo looks to be a quality addition in his own right. In 55 appearances all over the pitch last season, he scored seven goals and provided 12 assists, which equates to a goal involvement every 2.89 games.

Ultimately, for the reported price, signing Yılmaz seems like an excellent idea, and if he can get even remotely close to the former Spurs star in North London, he'd be an unreal asset to Ange Postecoglou.

Slot could repeat Coutinho move by selling £63m Liverpool sensation

Arne Slot will have already created a grandiose plan to start his Liverpool tenure without a hitch, taking the high-class squad that Jurgen Klopp created and cemented and placing his stamp on it.

Liverpool, there is no doubt, is entering the unknown, preparing to charge toward the goals of a campaign with a first-team squad led by a new figure. Frissons of excitement are flying but so too is there a measure of trepidation that Klopp's Herculean efforts will fade into the poignant memory of better times.

But FSG have installed a new structure, enticed Michael Edwards back to the fold in a bigger, all-seeing role as their CEO of Football, and while several pressing concerns require attention – namely, the 12-month contract quandaries of Virgil van Dijk (captain), Trent Alexander-Arnold (vice-captain) and Mohamed Salah (attacking talisman).

Virgil van Dijk and Jurgen Klopp embrace

Keeping hold of such players, it should be clear, is paramount for the fluency and success of Slot's early-stage Liverpool tenure, not least because they are three of the most influential and experienced members of the crop. But not all of the Reds' most profitable players are untouchable.

Indeed, Darwin Nunez is among those to have been linked with a move away in recent weeks, and while flawed he may be, the Uruguayan has a lofty ceiling. However, one of his closest peers must be quite ruthlessly sold.

Liverpool considering big summer sale

Spanish reports have persisted quite frequently in recent weeks that Barcelona are pushing for the signing of Luis Diaz, who had been one of Klopp's most important players last season, starting every one of Liverpool's Premier League fixtures in 2024.

Luis Diaz warming up for Liverpool.

Recently, as per Diario AS, Liverpool have responded to La Blaugrana's advancements by slapping a €75m (£63m) price tag on the Colombia star, something that might prove a stumbling block for the La Liga outfit, racked with financial worry.

Diaz is unquestionably Liverpool's star left winger, and while he has much to offer for Slot and his soon-to-be-instilled system on Merseyside, it may well be worth cashing in and reinvesting.

Why Luis Diaz should be sold

Indefatigable. Unceasing. Relentless. Robust. Pick your athletic-based superlative; Diaz is certain to fall somewhere within the broad parameters of such praise.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz

But this alone is not enough to keep Diaz at the club, with his wastefulness and poor return failing Liverpool on several important occasions. A return of 13 goals and five assists over 51 matches in all competitions is certainly not shoddy but nor is it particularly eye-catching.

Anfield welcomed Diaz from Portuguese side FC Porto in a £37m transfer back in January 2022, tasked with replacing the iconic Sadio Mane, who still plied his trade at Liverpool at the time of Diaz's arrival but was heading toward his contract expiry at the end of the campaign.

Diaz is contracted until 2027 and this is largely why FSG and Edwards believe that he could fetch a pretty penny. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 12% for shot-creating actions and the top 7% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

Fleet-footed and fearsome in his electric-charged runs up and down the flank, Diaz has been hailed as a "livewire" by journalist Peter Hall for this very reason.

However, he's not the cream of the crop at Anfield and, one would think, collecting a fee in the £60m ballpark would give Liverpool ample ammunition to redirect toward a fresh face.

But £63m is a lot of money; it would mark the third-highest sale in Anfield's history, behind only Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez.

Liverpool simply have to consider selling Diaz and turning their gaze to summer transfer targets with the added gleam of recouped funds.

3.

Who knows, it might even prove to be a masterstroke for Slot, his very own Coutinho moment.

Diaz sale could be Coutinho 2.0

When Liverpool sold Coutinho to Barcelona in January 2018 for a staggering fee of £142m, supporters mourned the loss of a truly special star who, it felt, could not be replaced.

Former Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho.

Liverpool had clicked into gear under Klopp and were scoring goals for fun, but the money collected was thrown back out into the market over the coming months, with the £75m deal to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton and the £67m signing of Alisson Becker from AS Roma revolutionising the squad and transcending the ambitions of regular top-four finishes and trophy runs.

Instead, Liverpool conquered it all. In 2018/19, Tottenham Hotspur were vanquished in the Champions League final, one year later, Liverpool toppled Manchester City to win their maiden Premier League title in its modern format.

Barcelona might have overpaid quite considerably but Liverpool certainly aren’t complaining, albeit waiting for several interminable years for payment packages from the financially-stricken club, who funded the venture via an intermediary.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are still in pursuit of Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville, having scouted him for months. The 22-year-old would continue the Dutch theme at Anfield and would arrive with plenty of promise after being crowned the Championship MVP, posting 21 goals and ten assists in all competitions.

The knock-on, long-term effect of such a deal, with plenty of money still to burn after Diaz's sale, could be truly remarkable for a Liverpool team in transition.

In hindsight, Liverpool selling Coutinho proved to be a watershed moment that opened the flood of success, eternalising Klopp and his reign on Merseyside.

Diaz would not be sold for quite the same dizzying sum but there's little question that it could have something of a similar effect, especially if Slot was to target a player like Summerville.

Pundit: £300,000-a-week Champions League winner could join Tottenham

Tottenham have been tipped to land an incredible deal this summer despite missing out on Champions League football next season.

Spurs miss out on Champions League

Tottenham will be playing Europa League football at best next season, after a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City moved the visitors to within a win of the title, and confirmed that the Lilywhites can no longer catch fourth-placed Aston Villa, who will take the final Champions League spot.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou hit out at his own fanbase following the defeat, with plenty of Spurs fans cheering the loss as it prevented Arsenal from being in pole position for their first Premier League title since 2004.

"The foundations are really fragile," the Australian said after the game. "The last 48 hours have shown me that. It's inside the club, outside the club. Outside, inside, everywhere. It's been an interesting exercise. It's just my observations, mate."

A final day trip to Sheffield United awaits the Lilywhites, with Spurs expected to put the already relegated Blades to the sword. If they don't though, they will be looking nervously over their shoulder, with both Chelsea and Newcastle still able to leapfrog the Lilywhites courtesy of their superior goal difference, a scenario which would leave Tottenham with UEFA Conference League football next season.

Worse than Son: Spurs ace who lost the ball 24x stopped Arsenal's title bid

A few Spurs players seemingly weren’t keen on seeing Arsenal win the league.

ByJack Salveson Holmes May 15, 2024

Either way, it is far from the hopes that Spurs harboured at the midway point of the campaign, but is likely about as expected from the beginning of the season in the wake of Harry Kane's departure. Now, attention turns to summer, and they have been tipped to land an audacious deal.

Spurs tipped to land Champions League winner

That comes courtesy of former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton, who has audaciously tipped the Lilywhites as a potential landing spot for Manchester City's Jack Grealish, claiming he knows the player well from their time together in the Midlands.

The Englishman has seen injuries derail his season and even when fit has struggled to fire on all cylinders. He has started just 10 Premier League games all season and was an unused substitute in their most recent win over the Lilywhites, with fellow winger Jeremy Doku sent on instead.

bryan-gil-jack-grealish-tottenham-opinion

He remains a clearly talented star though, and has been dubbed "world class" by people across the game, including by pundit Dean Saunders, while has has plenty of trophies to back up his ability, including an unforgettable treble last season.

And if he were to leave the Etihad, Hutton, who remains close to Grealish, believes Tottenham have a chance, though money could be a problem.

“I think the number ten role is somewhere Grealish could play at Tottenham.

“If Maddison isn’t available or isn’t on form, you need the backup and he could come in.

“But, from what I know, it comes down to money. Man City paid £100m, and I was at Villa when Daniel Levy wasn’t willing to spend £20m to bring him from the Championship.

“He’s 28 now, but they’ll still want a substantial fee."

On top of the fee, his wages would make him easily the highest earner at the club, and he would likely have to take a cut on his £300,000 a week deal in the North West.

James Maddison

£170,000

Timo Werner*

£165,000

Cristian Romero

Dejan Kulusevski

Though Grealish has long been a target for Tottenham, and Spurs remain in the hunt for a new option on the left hand side with Timo Werner's loan deal not yet permanent, a move for the Englishman given the finances involved and Spurs' lack of Champions League football looks more like a pipe dream than reality.

Gallagher completed the move to AtleticoExploited La Liga rule to get registeredFollowed Bellingham's footstepsWHAT HAPPENED?

The English midfielder's transfer saga finally came to an end earlier this week as he completed his move to Atletico Madrid. His transfer move was finalised a long time back, however, it got stuck after Samu Omorodion's transfer to Chelsea collapsed at the last moment. The Blues then roped in Joao Felix which allowed Gallagher to move to Atletico.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE EXPLANATION

Per Ball.ie, the 24-year-old exploited a La Liga rule while completing his move as he used his Irish Passport. According to La Liga rules, a club can register up to five non-EU players in their squad. Gallagher, who was born in England and represents the Three Lions, also has an Irish lineage and holds the country's passport. Using his Irish connection, the player was registered as the club's regular signing, thus allowing them to register one more player from outside Europe if they want to.

DID YOU KNOW?

The former Blues star followed in the footsteps of England colleague Jude Bellingham who similarly used his Irish lineage to register himself as a regular European player with Real Madrid last summer while completing his move from Borussia Dortmund.

D'Arcy Short slams ton to keep sloppy Perth Scorchers in seventh

The opener was dropped four times on the way to his second BBL hundred

Peter Della Penna05-Jan-2020D’Arcy Short made the hosts Perth Scorchers pay for a sloppy fielding display, making the most of a string of reprieves to post the slowest century in the history of the Big Bash, but one that served to set up victory for the Hobart Hurricanes by eight runs in front of more than 30,000 on Sunday night. Short was spilled on 21, 38, 53, and 68 in an explosive but charmed knock, striking seven sixes by the end of his innings as he brought up three figures on the final ball that served to produce a total which wound up being just out of reach of a valiant effort led by Mitchell Marsh in pursuit. The Hurricanes victory was all the more impressive in light of injuries to James Faulkner before the night began and Riley Meredith during the match itself as an understrength bowling unit withstood a late charge from the hosts. The Hurricanes moved up into fifth place with the win while the Scorchers sit in seventh on the BBL points table.Short’s record long stayThe Hurricanes opener set a new mark for the most deliveries spent at the crease to reach three figures in the history of the Big Bash League, taking 70 balls to do it for his second career ton in the BBL and first since an unbeaten 122 two seasons earlier against the Brisbane Heat. He had some help along the way though, including a pair of key assists from Tim David.Getty ImagesThe Singapore international David took four excellent catches and produced a runout in a brilliant fielding display to help knock off Scotland in a thriller at the T20 World Cup Qualifier in Dubai this past October, but his fielding on Sunday night was unrecognizable from that occasion. The easiest of the four chances offered by Short was the first one of the night put down by David, who charged in from the sweeper-cover boundary in the fifth over for a skied drive off the bowling of Matt Kelly. But David nearly overran the ball while covering the ground and as he slid to cushion the catching attempt, the ball wound up clanging off his chest instead of his hands and wound up going to ground. It was Short’s 14th delivery at the time and he continued to struggle for rhythm by the time he was dropped again. Three balls after Liam Livingstone broke the opening stand having Caleb Jewell caught at long-on, Livingstone could not hold onto a sharp one-handed return chance, which pushed Short to 39 off 38 balls.Short used his feet to strike Ashton Agar over long-on in the 13th for six and a single later in the over took him to a 44-ball fifty. Another tough return chance was put down by Jhye Richardson in his follow-through in the next over before Fawad Ahmed was the last bowler to miss out on claiming Short in the 16th. David could not clasp onto a top-edged sweep at deep backward square for what would have been another double-wicket over after Fawad claimed David Miller with a missed sweep. Short then struck three sixes in his final two overs, including a scoop over fine leg on the final ball of the innings to bring up his ton.Perth’s Rocky PowerplayThe Scorchers chase was blunted by three wickets in the first 15 balls. Having just struck two boundaries, Livingstone was overambitious in attempting a third in a failed attempt to go across his stumps to scoop Meredith’s 145 kph pace and was bowled for 13 in the second over. Cameron Bancroft’s waft outside off stump in the third gave Scott Boland a wicket. Boland then dropped Marsh on the first delivery to the Scorchers captain but the fumble caromed onto the non-striker’s stumps with Josh Inglis comfortably out of his crease. However, the Hurricanes early inroads were neutralized somewhat by an injury to Meredith in the fourth over. The fast bowler began clutching at the left side of his ribcage mid over and had to come off the field by the end of it. He never returned, leaving Hurricanes captain Ben McDermott pondering his options to fill in two overs later on.Mitchell Marsh is quite strong down the ground•Getty ImagesMarshalling the FightbackScorchers captain Marsh kept his side in the hunt with a 75-run partnership alongside Cameron Green. He was content knocking singles while waiting for loose balls to hit for six that rarely came, however. The stand ended when Nathan Ellis pinned Green leg before missing a flick to midwicket for 33. Chris Jordan was promoted to No. 5 but fell three balls later swatting a half-tracker from legspinner Qais Ahmad to Short at long-on.After a few lusty blows from David, Boland struck in the 16th with a slower ball before Marsh’s stay finally came to an end for 48 with a skied flick to deep midwicket to make it 129 for 7. A late flurry from Richardson made the scorecard more flattering for the Scorchers, who entered the final over needing 29 to win with two wickets in hand and wound up eight runs short.
