"Matter of time" before Maresca hands unseen Chelsea teenager senior debut

Chelsea have been tipped to unleash an unseen teenager and hand him his senior debut soon, with it only being a “matter of time” before he’s handed his debut by head coach Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea prepare for Liverpool after Nottingham Forest draw

Amidst the international break, Maresca and his staff are busy preparing for an all-important clash away to Liverpool, following their thoroughly entertaining 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.

"Dream" Chelsea player out until "November or December" through injury

He’ll have to wait until winter.

The game had it all – a sending off, goals, miraculous saves, guilt-edged chances and plenty of drama. There is a serious case to be made that it was the most entertaining draw in the Premier League so far this season, and either side could’ve come away the victor.

Forest remain unbeaten on the road, which is quite the feat for Nuno Espirito Santo, especially considering the tough trips they’ve had to face. Chris Wood gave Forest a shock lead just after the restart, with Noni Madueke’s brilliantly taken low effort soon levelling the score on 57 minutes.

Both Matz Sels and Robert Sanchez pulled off phenomenal saves to keep the score level, but the moment of the match came from Sels, who denied superstar Cole Palmer with a stunning double save from close range.

Nicolas Jackson unfortunately put in a “5/10” performance against Forest, and Christopher Nkunku arguably really should’ve scored with a gaping free header from close range. However, Sels’ point-blank denial also needs to be praised, with the Forest keeper having a real blinder.

“I think first 45 minutes we didn’t concede nothing, we controlled the game, created the chances and the performance was very good because you can get frustrated against this kind of team,” said Maresca on Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Forest.

“But, as I said, compared to the Brighton game it’s a completely different kind of game so you need to learn how to play. I thought first half was top and then second half we concede the goal and become a little bit more up and down. After we score immediately and then again we were in control.

“Probably the red card we think most of the time that 11 vs 10 is more easy but probably today was even more difficult as they were a line of five with more players inside the box defending. Then you take the risk to lose some balls, and you concede counter-attacks or set-pieces that they are very strong. But overall, I thought the performance was very good, and I think we deserved to win the game.”

"Matter of time" before Shumaira Mheuka makes Chelsea debut

It’s been a very impressive start to the season for Maresca, who has now been tipped to hand exciting youngster Shumaira Mheuka his senior debut.

Taking to X, The Secret Scout has expressed his belief that it’s a matter of time before Mheuka gets minutes for Chelsea. He added that the 16-year-old is already a member of Chelsea’s Under-21s, playing years above his age group.

“It’s been an amazing couple of weeks,” said Mheuka on making his Under-21s debut.

“It’s been super busy! I’ve been away with England, but now I’m back at Cobham, feeling good, and ready to return to league action. As a 16-year-old stepping up to the Under-21s squad, it was a proud moment, and it can be tough at times. But I feel like I’ve handled the situation well and embraced every opportunity that’s come my way.

“Getting a taste of Under-21s football has been great and has definitely pushed my performance even further.”

Twin sisters Kycia Knight and Kyshona Knight return to West Indies side for Pakistan T20Is

Twin sisters Kycia Knight and Kyshona Knight returned to the West Indies Women squad for three T20Is against Pakistan Women, which will be the side’s first home internationals in 19 months. Both last played for West Indies in 2019.The team will be led by Stafanie Taylor, with Anisa Mohammed appointed vice-captain.A squad size of 13, though, meant top-order batter Natasha McLean, middle-order batter Shemaine Campbelle and legspinner Afy Fletcher, who were part of the T20I side in England last year, couldn’t find a place this time.Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Reniece Boyce will lead the West Indies A team that will play a three-match T20 series against Pakistan A. Seamer Shabika Gajnabi and allrounder Cherry Ann-Fraser – both were part of the senior side in England – also found a place in the 15-member A squad. The A side also includes 16-year-old left-arm medium-pacer Zaida James and 17-year-old right-arm medium-pacer Jannillea Glasgow. The uncapped duo was part of the pre-series training camp. All 28 players, from the senior and the A side, will be eligible to be picked for the five-match ODI series that follows the T20Is.”This series against Pakistan has come at an opportune time because the West Indies players have not been able to face international opponents since September 2020,” the lead selector for West Indies women’s cricket, Ann Browne-John, said in a CWI release. “It’s exciting that not only will the senior team be in action, but for the very first time a West Indies A team will have the opportunity to compete against international opposition.”As we prepare for the upcoming five CG Insurance ODI match series, these three T20Is will enable the senior team to ease themselves back into the international arena. The ‘A’ team matches are an excellent chance for some of the younger players who have not been able to find a place in the senior team to show their skills.”The A team will play its T20 matches on the same day and at the same venue, preceding the senior team’s matches. The A team is also scheduled to play three one-dayers.T20I squad: Stafanie Taylor (capt), Anisa Mohammed (vice-capt), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Britney Cooper, Deandra Dottin, Chinelle Henry, Kycia Knight, Kyshona Knight, Hayley Matthews, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera SelmanA team – T20 squad: Reniece Boyce (capt), Shabika Gajnabi (vice-capt), Shanika Bruce, Cherry Ann-Fraser, Jannillea Glasgow, Sheneta Grimmond, Caneisha Isaac, Zaida James, Japhina Joseph, Qiana Joseph, Mandy Mangru, Kaysia Schultz, Steffie Soogrim, Rachel Vincent, Rashada Williams

Spurs chiefs hold internal talks over signing £21m starlet after Solanke

Tottenham transfer chiefs have held internal talks over bringing in a £21 million starlet, as attention turns to who Ange Postecoglou could look to sign next after completing a £65 million deal for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Spurs agree Solanke signing as Postecoglou gets his new forward

It's been a busy few days at Spurs, with the search for a new number nine to replace Harry Kane now drawing to a conclusion with Solanke's pending arrival.

The former Liverpool ace bagged 21 goals in all competitions under Andoni Iraola last season in what was a career-best campaign for him personally, only just missing out on a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024.

On Friday, following week-long transfer talks, Spurs reached a complete agreement to sign Solanke, who will come in to provide Postecoglou with a star signing in a position the Australian personally wanted to reinforce.

Postecoglou will be ecstatic to get his top transfer target over the line before deadline day on August 30, with the 58-year-old previously confirming that Spurs were on the look out for a talismanic new forward.

"At Celtic, I had Kyogo, who was a sort of out and out number nine and in Japan, I've always had a striker," said Postecoglou on Spurs signing a new striker.

"It just depends, like last year we had to be a bit creative, it's fair to say. You know but if Harry would have stayed I definitely would have used him! So I think for us what's more important is the type of striker we get. You know we play a certain way. We demand certain things from a physical perspective from the technical aspects of it that it's going be a striker that fits that mould."

After signing Solanke, it is believed Tottenham are also after a new winger and full-back, with Emerson Royal also on the verge of joining AC Milan.

Tottenham hold internal talks over signing Michael Kayode

According to The Boot Room, a player on Spurs' radar to potentially succeed Emerson is Fiorentina starlet Michael Kayode.

The 20-year-old, who impressed over his 26 Serie A appearances for La Viola last season, is rumoured to command a £21 million price tag. TBR claim that Spurs chiefs have internally discussed signing Kayode before the deadline, but he is just one a few full-back targets on their radar.

Michael Kayode tussling with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

“This one is really strong,” said Pino Vitale to Radio Firenze Viola (via HITC), after Kayode's brilliant one-v-one performance against Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia last season.

“Incredible. He forced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to chase him. It was the best match ever since (Vincenzo) Italiano took over Fiorentina. They didn’t let Napoli play and ate them up. (Full-backs Fabiano) Parisi and Kayode are strong and played an excellent game.

“Kvaratskhelia had to change wings due to the way Kayode controlled him! There is no need to worry about him. He is only 19 years old, but he is a ‘player’.”

Everton join the race to sign "wonderful" 32 y/o Champions League winner

Everton have reportedly entered the race to sign a "wonderful" Champions League winner, in what would be an eye-catching swoop for one key reason.

Everton transfer news

Transfer rumours surrounding the Blues are still emerging at a healthy rate, as Sean Dyche looks to have the most productive summer window possible, adding to the names who have already come in, from Jake O'Brien to Iliman Ndiaye.

Everton are believed to be in ongoing negotiations over a potential move for Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, who may be known to supporters because of the short stint he had on loan at Liverpool in 2022/23 when he failed to make a single appearance in the Premier League.

The Merseysiders have also reportedly tabled an offer for Hellas Verona right-back Jackson Tchatchoua, with the 22-year-old someone who could add more youth in a position currently covered by the likes of Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young, along with Nathan Patterson.

There is the ongoing fight to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, too, who could once again depart the Etihad on loan this summer, with Pep Guardiola having no plans for him. Some reports have suggested that Everton are leading the race to snap up the 28-year-old temporarily, but Aston Villa are acting as a threat to them.

Everton eyeing swoop for "wonderful" defender

According to a fresh update from Caught Offside, Everton are in the mix to sign former Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip this summer, with Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen also keen on snapping him up. The 32-year-old is a free agent after leaving Anfield at the end of last season, following eight hugely successful years at the Blues' local rivals.

ousmane-diomande-joel-matip-liverpool-opinion

This would be an audacious piece of business by Everton because of Matip's Liverpool past, with so few players throughout history representing both sides of Stanley Park. Whether the central defender would be willing to join the Blues is certainly up for debate, given his feelings for the Reds and fear of upsetting the fanbase, but he would be an astute signing for Dyche.

Granted, Matip has been known for his injury problems down the years, which limited him to 180 starts across eight seasons at Liverpool, but when fit, he is an excellent player who now has a wealth of experience, winning the Champions League, Premier League and many other trophies.

Jurgen Klopp couldn't have spoken more highly of him earlier this year, saying: "In all the years that I have been involved in football, I am not sure I have come across too many players who are more loved than Joel Matip.

"I’m not even sure it would be possible to say anything bad about him. A wonderful professional, a wonderful footballer and a wonderful human being – we have been blessed to have him with us for as long as we have and now all we can do is wish him well as he heads off in a new direction."

Everton in ongoing negotiations to sign "really good" once £62m midfielder

The Toffees have been interested in the player for some time.

ByTom Coates Aug 5, 2024

If Everton could sign Matip on a free transfer, it could be an ideal piece of business, bringing him in as an experienced squad player who fills in from time to time, providing competition for Jarrad Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and O'Brien.

'It's life-changing to be honest' – Jhye Richardson on IPL auction

Jhye Richardson was left feeling exhausted after he earned a “life-changing” bid at the IPL auction while his Australia and now Punjab Kings team-mate Riley Meredith termed his outcome in becoming the most expensive uncapped overseas player as “pretty outrageous.”Richardson fetched AUD 2.48 million (INR 14 crore/USD 1.9 million) amid frenzied bidding for the pace bowler who was the leading wicket-taker in this season’s BBL while Meredith, who plays for the Hobart Hurricanes, was also in steep demand as he earned AUD 1.42 million (INR 8 crore/USD 1 million) despite being yet to make his international debut.Related

The pair, along with other Australia team-mates whose names were in the auction, watched the bidding late into the night during their quarantine in New Zealand while hurriedly using currency convertors and hasty notes to keep track of the ever-rising sums.”I knew my name came up and I just got this wave of nauseousness, not knowing what to expect,” Richardson said. “For what to me felt like 20 minutes no one put their paddle up and you are like ‘oh, no’, you have no idea what’s going to happen. Then the first paddle went up and it realistically was probably five or 10 seconds but felt like a lifetime, then after that you just hope it keeps going up.’I just got this wave of nauseousness, not knowing what to expect’ – Jhye Richardson•Getty Images

“I don’t really remember too much about it. It’s almost a blank, I was watching it but felt like I wasn’t watching it. After everything that’s happened you are obviously really excited then you hit this massive wall, it was pretty late, I had all this emotion, all the adrenaline, a load of messages coming through on my phone and then completely crashed and felt exhausted. I feel like I played a game, mentally exhausted myself. Still sinking in, that’s for sure.”I think it’s an amazing result. It’s life-changing to be honest. And it’s so fresh, it’s only happened last night, that I haven’t actually had a whole lot of time to process it. It’s exciting. It’s almost nerve-racking. It’s all of those things, that.”Meredith was converting Richardson’s price as it climbed and climbed, before having the same experience himself. Both players were on calls with their partners back home in Australia as the numbers rose.”I was trying to figure it out and tell him [Jhye], it went up to a million, two million, unbelievable, and then mine rolled around and it was the same,” Meredith said. “Same as Jhye, I probably only got a few hours sleep. I was on Facetime with my girlfriend and couldn’t believe what was happening. Like it was fake to be honest, we were pretty dumfounded.2:55

Can X-factor signings take Punjab to the title?

“It was pretty outrageous really, wasn’t expecting too much going on. Was hopeful for a bid or two. It got a bit out of control, luckily enough a couple of teams doing a bit of bidding and it was pretty amazing to go that high.”Richardson has experience of bowling in India having been part of the limited-overs tour in early 2019 shortly before he suffered the shoulder dislocation in the UAE which required two rounds of surgery. However, for Meredith the IPL will be the first time he has travelled to India – or anywhere in Asia – with his ability to push the speedgun towards 150kph attracting plenty of interest. With fast bowlers in high demand, Riley Meredith felt his signing for AUD 1.42 million was a ‘bit of right place, right time’•Getty Images

“I’m sure it will be a learning curve and hoping to grab it with both hands,” Meredith said. “There was a bit of talk before the auction about fast bowlers being in demand this year. It was a good time to not be allocated to a franchise. Bit of right place, right time.”The mega payday for Richardson is another significant milestone in his recovery from the injury that caused him to miss the 2019 World Cup and any chance of being selected for the Ashes. He has played one game for Australia since the initial injury but is likely to play a significant role in the T20I series against New Zealand which starts on Monday and will be making a strong push to be part of the T20 World Cup squad later this year in India.”All the questions sort of go through your mind when you have such a long recovery or such a big injury, whether or not you’ll get back to your best,” he said. “I had a lot of amazing people around me to say, yeah, you will get back. The more I heard it the more I started to believe and when you believe in yourself that’s when you can reach your potential. It’s been an amazing journey. But it’s not over yet. There’s still plenty of things to concentrate on. This Australian tour and hoping to make it back to Test cricket at one stage.”[The IPL] is obviously a really good opportunity again and a good challenge to showcase a few more of my skills in subcontinental conditions. I’m really looking forward to it and for me on a personal level it’s really reassuring to know that I’m sort of back to where I was shoulder-wise which is really exciting.”

'What happens in the future…' – Thomas Frank delivers intriguing reaction to Erik ten Hag sacking as Brentford boss is quizzed on Man Utd job

Man Utd part ways with Erik ten HagThomas Frank linked with vacant jobBrentford boss opens up on rumoursFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United and INEOS finally made the decision to part ways with Ten Hag after months of speculation as the Red Devils struggled to find their footing since the start of the season. The Red Devils have a number of names on their shortlist to take over at Old Trafford, including Brentford boss Frank. The Bees' head coach has now reacted to Ten Hag's sacking and opened up on reports linking him with the vacant role at United.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesWHAT FRANK SAID

Speaking to the media, Frank responded when asked about the Manchester United job: “It’s a very delicate question. I’ve got a big responsibility to Brentford, the fans, [owner] Matthew [Denham], the leadership, the staff, and I’ve got one focus and that’s to do our best and beat Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

“I’ve said many, many times but I’m very happy here. It’s one of the best clubs in the world. What happens in the future, who knows? But I’m very, very happy here."

When asked if he had the right to talk with other clubs after six year with Brentford, he said: “It’s difficult for me to say – that’s a hypothetical situation. I always try to be as transparent as possible. I’ll repeat myself. I’m very happy here and I can see myself being here for a long, long time in the future.

“Of course, I’ve also said that maybe if something comes up and I think, ‘That’s an opportunity I’d like to try’, okay let’s see. But for now, no, I’m very, very happy here.

"It’s more difficult [to focus] when you guys keep asking questions. I just want to focus on Sheffield Wednesday and focus on winning the game. But I get it’s a part of it.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Frank was also questioned about how he felt for Ten Hag after being sacked by Manchester United this early in the season, to which the Danish coach responded: “Of course, I feel for Erik. He is a great coach and has a great career. He did a good job at Manchester United, two trophies in two years.

“It’s a non-stop developing football world and that is more than acceptable. At these big clubs, there are massive expectations but there has to be a reality check. There are three teams in Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool who look to be above everyone.

“When you are head coach you always feel for guys who lose their jobs. It’s life. It happens. There are better people to judge that (improvement). He had a very good first season and had more than a few injury problems.”
