Newcastle eyeing Hugo Ekitike transfer swoop in January

Newcastle United are interested in signing a "special" attacking player once the January transfer window opens, with Eddie Howe previously admitting he is an admirer.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have crawled their way towards the winter window in recent weeks, with some of the performances in the Premier League, Champions League and EFL Cup looking tired.

A busy run of fixtures looks to have caught up with Newcastle's injury-hit squad, and the poor form of Kieran Trippier is a perfect example of their current struggles.

Supporters may be desperate to see new signings come in once January arrives, giving Howe that added depth that he craves, with a host of players linked with moves to St James' Park recently.

Centre-backs are seemingly being looked at, with Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio constantly being tipped to join Newcastle, and players further up the pitch are also seen as targets.

In attack, VfB Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy is in the form of his life, scoring 17 goals in just 12 Bundesliga starts this season, and he is one individual who could come in and ease the burden on the likes of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.

Newcastle want Hugo Ekitike

According to a new transfer update from L'Equipe, (via OneFootball) Newcastle are keen on making a move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike in January. The Magpies face competition from Lyon, however, so it may not be easy for them to get a deal over the line.

Hugo Ekitike for Paris Saint-Germain.

In the past, Howe has even openly admitted that he rates the Frenchman as a player despite missing out on him in the summer of 2022, saying:

"It’s no secret that we really liked Hugo and we worked hard to try and do that deal. He’s a very talented lad and he decided to go to PSG. I have no hard feelings toward him and wish him well in the next phase of his career. I really do wish him luck."

Ekitike could be such an ideal signing for Newcastle, arriving as a squad player with plenty of potential, before eventually becoming more of a key man.

The 21-year-old will have hopefully learned from some iconic teammates, playing alongside Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar at PSG, where he has four goals and assists apiece to his name in 33 appearances.

The fact that both Wilson and Isak are injury-prone does highlight the need to sign another attacking player, and with the former now in his 30s, Ekitike could be seen as someone who could replace him in time. He has been lauded by former Reims manager Oscar Garcia in the past, who said of him:

"There is something very special about him. He’s young, and he has the quality to become a very good player. He’s a young man with a lot of quality but also a lot to improve on, but he works hard in training."

Newcastle now ready to make offer to sign "extraordinary" player

The PIF would guarantee him a big salary.

Newcastle should always be looking to plan for the future in order to keep building as a club – and Ekitike could be seen as a key part of it at St James' Park.

Man Utd & Ten Hag offered Anthony Martial replacement this month – report

Manchester United's attacking ranks look like they're about to get a little lighter. Jadon Sancho, who hasn't played since August and has been training away from the first team since September after a falling-out with manager Erik ten Hag, is on the verge of sealing a return to Borussia Dortmund.

All that needs to be sorted out are a few "contractual and financial issues", but once those are dealt with, United will be able to move on from Sancho. It's hard to say the Red Devils will feel any immediate impact given the length of the Englishman's absence, but another forward could depart after significant involvement.

According to Football Insider, United are ready to offload Anthony Martial, who's played 19 games and 629 minutes so far this season, if they receive the right offer this month. He would need to be replaced, but United already have options.

United given Choupo-Moting opportunity

United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting from Bayern Munich (Football Insider), and they appear to be interested in that possibility. Ten Hag's side have already held "preliminary talks" about a possible deal this month, though it's worth noting that nothing has reached an "advanced" stage yet.

The hope is that Sancho's exit will free up some otherwise unavailable funds for Ten Hag to add to his squad. Timo Werner is another who was offered to United, but Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg reported on Saturday morning that he's now expected to join league rivals Tottenham instead.

Choupo-Moting could invigorate United's press

United could be forgiven for an instinctively underwhelmed response to links with Choupo-Moting. In his previous stint in the Premier League with Stoke City, he only scored five goals in 30 top-flight matches, nor was he prolific at Paris Saint-Germain, netting just nine in 51 outings.

His strike rate at Bayern is better – 38 in 107. He's only hit the target twice in 19 games this term, but he enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 season with 17 in 30. Indeed, it's no coincidence that this was the first time he'd started more than eight Bundesliga games for the club (14 in this instance). When he was more involved, his output naturally increased.

Still, you could see why many would doubt his capacity to fix United's dire goalscoring issues. Ten Hag's men actually boast a respectable defensive record – they've conceded as many goals (27) as second-placed Aston Villa and fewer than Champions League-chasing Spurs (30) – but the reason they're languishing in mid-table is that they've scored just 22 times in their 20 matches. That's fewer than 18th-placed Luton, who still have a game in hand.

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

One thing that Choupo-Moting will definitely offer is an excellent work rate out of possession. He ranks in the 85th percentile or better, when compared to positional peers over the past year, for tackles (1.16), tackles won (0.78) and tackles in the middle third (0.54) per 90 minutes (FBref). This shows us that he's a committed and effective presser, which is the kind of player Ten Hag could use. United have been an average pressing team this season (as per The Analyst), ranking ninth for opposition passes per defensive action (12.3).

Whether United sign Choupo-Moting or someone else, there will still be an onus on other forwards to step up. Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford have only managed to bag nine goals between them, while Antony hasn't scored at all.

Wilson out of Afghanistan T20s, Stirling to captain Ireland

Gary Wilson has been left out of the Ireland T20 squad for the Oman Quadrangular T20 tournament and the away bilateral series against Afghanistan, as he continues to recover from a medical condition. Wilson had been diagnosed in December last year with a condition that has affected his vision. And while he is expected to be on the road to recovery, the forthcoming tour is a little too early for the process to be completed. In Wilson’s absence, 28-year old opening batsman Paul Stirling will take over the captaincy.

Squads

For Oman Quadrangular T20 Tournament: Paul Stirling (capt), Andrew Balbirnie, Peter Chase, George Dockrell, Shane Getkate, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Kevin O’Brien, Stuart Poynter, Boyd Rankin, Simi Singh, Harry Tector, Stuart Thompson, Lorcan Tucker
For Afghanistan T20s: Paul Stirling (capt), Andrew Balbirnie, Peter Chase, George Dockrell, Shane Getkate, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Kevin O’Brien, Stuart Poynter, Boyd Rankin, James Shannon, Simi Singh, Harry Tector, Stuart Thompson, Lorcan Tucker
For Afghanistan ODIs: William Porterfield (capt), Andrew Balbirnie, James Cameron-Dow, Peter Chase, George Dockrell, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O’Brien, Stuart Poynter, Boyd Rankin, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Lorcan Tucker
For Afghanistan Test: William Porterfield (capt), Andrew Balbirnie, James Cameron-Dow, George Dockrell, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O’Brien, Stuart Poynter, Boyd Rankin, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Stuart Thompson, Lorcan Tucker

Speaking from Bangladesh, where he is currently engaged in the 2019 BPL, Stirling said: “It’s a privilege to have been asked to captain the side in Gary’s absence, I will relish the challenge. Having started off in this side as a young player in 2008, the influence of senior players like Trent Johnston, Kyle McCallan, Andrew White and Ed Joyce were huge in developing the cricketer and the person. Myself, along with the other senior players and management in this squad, will look to create an environment where players coming through who are hungry for success can flourish both on and off the field.”It is a big year ahead for us with the T20 World Cup Qualifiers coming up in October, so the importance is growing with each game we play.”It has been pleasing to see some brilliant individual performances in Sri Lanka with the Ireland Wolves, and look forward to seeing these players grab their opportunities when they arise. This will be a great chance for the team to showcase their skills against high quality opposition, both in Oman and India.”Among the fresh faces in the T20 squads for the quadrangular series and the India tour are Harry Tector, the 19-year old Ireland Wolves captain, and allrounders Shane Getkate and Joshua Little. James McCollum, the 23-year old opening batsman, and James Cameron-Dow, the 28-year old left-arm spinner, have been named in the ODI and Test squads to face Afghanistan, while Lorcan Tucker, the 22-year old wicketkeeper-batsman finds a place in all four squads.”Oman and the Afghan series in India offer up two very distinct challenges for us,” Andrew White, the chairman of selectors, said. “This will be our first major tour since becoming a Full Member, and we’re certainly looking forward to some good, competitive cricket in challenging conditions. This is what top-tier international cricket is all about.”With regards to some of the new faces, there is no denying the performances of James McCollum, James Cameron-Dow, Shane Getkate and Harry Tector on the current Ireland Wolves tour have impressed selectors. For McCollum, it hasn’t just been his runs but the manner in which he has scored them in subcontinent conditions that has impressed us most. His assuredness at the top of the order has been an asset for the Wolves team.”James Cameron-Dow may, for many fans, come as a bit of an unexpected surprise on this Wolves tour – but we have had our eye on him for a while now. His progress and development throughout the tour has been promising. He certainly offers us a good spin option for the Indian wickets we will play on against Afghanistan.”Shane Getkate has had an outstanding white-ball series for the Wolves in Sri Lanka and Harry Tector has been a consistent performer at under-age levels, and now led two national teams – the Under-19s squad to the World Cup last year and now the Ireland Wolves.”Ireland will play five matches against Oman, Scotland, Netherlands, and an Oman Development XI in the Quadrangular series. They will then head to India, the adopted home of the Afghanistan team, for three T20Is and five ODIs. The limited-overs leg will be followed by the first-ever Test match between the two sides since both became Full Members of the ICC.”A big part of that tour will be the Test match – we have seen some great Test cricket over the winter and I expect this to be a great contest away from home,” William Porterfield, the captain of the Test and ODI teams, said.”We have a great balance throughout the squad and it’s great to see some new faces that have been putting in performances for the Wolves get the opportunity.”I’m gutted for Gary that he is going to miss the tour and wish him a speedy recovery. I would also like to wish Paul Stirling the very best of luck in leading the lads into the next few weeks of T20s.”

Chelsea make "formal" offer to sign "eye-catching" midfielder

Chelsea have reportedly made a "formal proposal" to sign one club's "eye-catching" midfield maestro as Todd Boehly gets moving ahead of January.

Boehly's rumoured transfer plans for 2024

Led by chairman Boehly, the Blues are reportedly plotting to strengthen manager Mauricio Pochettino's ranks even more despite spending nearly £400 million in the summer.

"Imagine" – TalkSport pundit says "unique" star may actually join Chelsea

He’s quite the player.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 23, 2023

Co-directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are on hand to assist Boehly in his transfer plans at Stamford Bridge, with it being reported that a new striker and centre-back are among Chelsea's top priorities.

Forward Nicolas Jackson, signed from Villarreal before deadline day, is still raw and there has been some doubt over whether he is ready to lead the line – despite scoring four in his last two Premier League games.

Brentford's Ivan Toney and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen are targets for Chelsea, to come in and provide a cutting edge for Pochettino going forward, while they also must think about replacing centre-back Thiago Silva.

The Brazilian veteran is out of contract at the end of the season and all signs point towards him leaving in 2024, prompting Chelsea to look at signing Ousmane Diomande from Sporting Lisbon among others.

Silva's homeland has actually been a talent pool for Chelsea of late, with Pochettino's side sealing deals for the likes of Angelo and Deivid Washington from Brazil's Serie A earlier this year.

Chelsea make "formal" offer for Moscardo

The South American talents appear to come part of Boehly's 'buy them young' policy, as Chelsea continue to monitor the best young talents in world football.

They've already sealed other deals for exciting young players like Romeo Lavia, Cole Palmer, Diego Moreira and Lesley Ugochukwu, with Corinthians wonderkid Gabriel Moscardo now a player of serious interest as well.

According to GOAL in Brazil, Chelsea have lodged a "formal proposal" to sign Moscardo and come as one of the first teams to do so.

Gabriel Moscardo for Santos.

The amount they've offered has apparently been kept "confidential" with Chelsea now awaiting a response from Corinthians, which is wanted by the start of the January transfer window.

Corinthians placed a value of around £30 million on Moscardo, a fee higher than what Chelsea have acutally proposed, but there has still been no definitive response from the midfielder's club.

Moscardo's "eye-catching" dribbling attracts praise

The 18-year-old is a real one to watch and stands out as one of the most exciting prodigies west of the Atlantic right now.

"Studious off the pitch, Moscardo seems to have a high footballing IQ on it, too," wrote GOAL journalist Krishan Davis on the teenager.

"As a defensive midfielder, he is predictably astute at reading the game, he passes precisely and he presses and battles tirelessly – a result of his youth but also testament to his stamina.

"His ball-carrying ability is particularly eye-catching, as he is able to progress play with the ball at his feet without discarding his defensive duties. That is undoubtedly an attribute that has led to him catching the eye of Europe's elite."

3 dream players Sunderland could sign to replace Jack Clarke

Sunderland's promotion prospects fall at the feet of one man – Jack Clarke.

The fleet-footed winger has been absolutely destroying the Championship term with a whopping nine goals in his first 16 appearances. Those returns have undoubtedly seen him become one of the league's most sought-after players.

Whilst winning September's Player of the Month confirmed this, the fact he's averaged the third-highest average match rating in the entire division (7.78) and completed the most successful dribbles per match (3.4), as per Sofascore, are two further reasons why the Premier League big boys are drawn towards his signature.

Burnley are believed to have bid several times for Clarke last summer but saw their offers rejected by Sunderland, while Brentford have also shown their interest in the 22-year-old, who the Black Cats are desperate to tie down to an improved deal.

With Clarke potentially in line to depart the club in January, amid that top-flight interest, here are three replacements that Tony Mowbray should consider pursuing.

1 Morgan Whittaker

If Clarke does depart the Stadium of Light, Mowbray could look to bring high-flying Plymouth Argyle forward Morgan Whittaker to the club, having been interested in the player prior to his departure from Swansea City over the summer.

Since arriving from Swansea for around £1m back in July, the Englishman has hit the ground running with seven goals and three assists in his first 16 appearances.

A pacey and direct forward player, who can play on either wing or as a number ten, Whittaker would offer the Black Cats incredible versatility as well as a monstrous ability to carry the ball and wreak havoc in the final third.

According to FBref, he ranks in the top 15% against his positional peers in the Championship for non-penalty goals, top 16% for successful take-ons and top 7% for total shots.

At the age of 22, he also has scope to improve further, aligning perfectly with their recruitment strategy.

2 Amad Diallo

Following his sensational loan spell in the North East last term, plundering 13 goals and supplying three assists, a deal to bring Amad Diallo back to the club is arguably the most popular option among Black Cats supporters – and has been mooted of late, as per TEAMtalk.

Much like Clarke, Diallo thrills the masses with his low centre of gravity, terrorising the opposition with his searing pace and fleet-footed dribbling.

If Sunderland were to successfully strike a deal for the Manchester United attacker, who originally cost them £37m from Atalanta in January 2021, it would only soften the blow of losing Clarke in the short-term, however, he does have the potential to exceed the Englishman's current purple patch in form, as seen last term.

As the table above delineates, Diallo exceeds Clarke in every attacking metric aside from progressive carries, although he still placed in the top 15% in the Championship for that statistic, so he would be a viable replacement on loan.

3 Shola Shoretire

Shola Shoretire is another Man United youngster whose development is stagnating at Old Trafford.

With too many top players ahead of him, the one-time Newcastle United academy asset's best chance of playing regular senior football is by departing the club.

The talented teenager, who was described as a "diamond" by journalist Antonio Mango, has scored four goals and supplied three assists in seven Premier League 2 matches this term, yet has made just five senior appearances for his current side to date – all of which came prior to last season.

Whilst this form suggests he's ready to make that leap to senior football, United have a big decision to make on the youngster given his contract expires in June 2024, and that could see the Black Cats pounce at the opportunity to capture such an impressive prospect.

Mystery lung condition puts John Hastings' career on hold

The fast bowler has undergone multiple tests, but doctors are yet to determine the cause of the condition, which is causing bleeding in his lungs every time he bowls

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2018A mystery lung condition has forced John Hastings, the Australia fast bowler, to take an indefinite break from cricket. He has undergone multiple tests, but doctors are yet to determine the cause of the condition, which is causing bleeding in his lungs every time he bowls.Hastings, 32, has played one Test, 29 ODIs and 9 T20Is for Australia. He retired from Test and ODI cricket in October 2017 to focus on his T20 career, and was set to play for the Sydney Sixers in the 2018-19 edition of the Big Bash League, which begins on December 19.”It’s something that, over probably the last three or four months, has been a really difficult period for me,” Hastings told the Australian radio station on Friday. “It’s basically every time I’ve been trying to gear up and get ready to bowl, I’ve been coughing up blood.”What’s happened is basically I won’t be able to bowl this year or probably moving forward unless this sort of situation gets sorted out. It’s just something that they can’t say, ‘look, you’re not going to have a fatal bleed on the field’ or it’s not going to cause long-term damage.”It’s pretty shattering. I’ve come to terms with it now, but over the last four or five months it’s been a very, very tough period. I’ve played this game my whole life and I wanted to keep playing it. I wanted to play tournaments all around the world. That’s one of the reasons I retired early from one-day and four-day cricket.””To see it may be slipping away, it’s pretty tough to take. At this stage, unless something miraculous happens, I won’t be able to bowl.”Hastings said he first experienced the symptoms several years ago, and had “little episodes maybe once a season for a year or two”. In recent months, however, it has “progressively got worse”.”Every time I’m bowling now, it’s happening,” he said. “It’s literally just bowling. It’s not running. I can do boxing weight sessions, rowing, anything like that, but as soon as the pressure [of bowling] at the crease at match intensity, when I step it up, literally I burst blood vessels in my lungs and I walk back to my mark and cough up some blood.”So it’s pretty scary, but they can’t tell for sure it’s not going to cause long-term damage. There’s a lot of grey area surrounding it. It’s not a very nice thing to have happened at the moment.”

Coach Rajput confident of Zimbabwe pushing South Africa

With several senior players returning to the fold, the coach is confident his team will put on a better show than they have in the recent past

Liam Brickhill28-Sep-2018Zimbabwe’s coach Lalchand Rajput is oozing optimism ahead of the first ODI in Kimberley on Sunday. It’s one trait by which his short tenure – he took over the position full-time in August after filling in on an interim basis in July – has been characterised.”South Africa has to be aware that this is not the Zimbabwe team of the past,” Rajput said. “This is a team that is going to give them a good run for their money. We have come to show the world that we are a competitive team and every game is important. We are here to show we can play aggressive cricket and we are here to win.”That’s fighting talk, and Rajput has inspired teams before. Part of the Indian team’s think-tank for a couple of years, including when they won the inaugural World T20 in 2007, Rajput was also in charge of Mumbai Indians in the 2008 IPL and oversaw many of Afghanistan’s recent achievements during his tenure as their coach. On his watch, Afghanistan won six out of 10 limited-overs series, secured Full Membership, and even toppled West Indies in an ODI in Gros Islet – their first win in the format over a Full Member other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh.Rajput is no doubt looking to replicate that success with Zimbabwe, and is hoping the challenge of taking on South Africa for the first time in three years will spur his team on. “South Africa is always a big challenge, but a challenge always gets the best out of me and the players,” he said.Rajput’s optimism, however, is yet to translate to success on the field. While Zimbabwe stayed just about afloat in their T20I tri-series against Australia and Pakistan, they floundered in the ODIs to lose 5-0 as Pakistan set numerous records.”The series we played when I took over was not good for us, but it was never going to be easy to face Australia and Pakistan in the T20I triangular series and then Pakistan in the ODI series when we were missing seven to eight players,” Rajput explained.”But now that the players are back, it looks a balanced team – a team that wants to do well. Apart from Graeme Cremer and Sikandar Raza, most of our senior players are back and, when experience and youth combine, we can get the best out of the team.”

‘Not just an important goalscorer’ – Key Harry Kane role at Bayern Munich highlighted by team-mate Raphael Guerreiro

Bayern Munich midfielder Raphael Guerreiro has revealed how Harry Kane offers a lot more to the team that just important goals.

  • Striker praised for offering more than just goals
  • Could return from injury against Dortmund
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane has been scoring goals for fun at Bayern following his summer move from Tottenham. The England captain is the Bundesliga's top scorer with 31 goals and is chasing down Robert Lewandowski's legendary record of 41 in a single campaign. Yet new team-mate Guerreiro says the striker offers the team far more than just finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

  • WHAT GUERREIRO SAID

He told : "To be honest, I didn’t really know about his style of play before he arrived at the club. I thought perhaps he might just stay up top and wait for chances to score. But he offers a lot more than that. He can link the play, he protects the ball well.

"When I was injured, I watched all the games and I really saw what a great striker he is. He is the type of striker that I really like. He really helps the team out in difficult moments by protecting the ball and by winning fouls. He is not just an important goalscorer for us, he also makes a lot of key passes. He creates a lot of opportunities for his teammates. For example, that pass for Jamal [Musiala] in our last game [against Darmstadt] was exceptional. So he is definitely one of the best strikers.

"He is a very, very important part of the team. He has shown that this season. When he struggles, we all struggle. He needs to maintain his level until the end of the season so we can achieve our aims as a team.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane also has 10 assists for Bayern this season in all competitions but may still finish the season empty-handed. The Bavarian giants have already suffered a shock exit from the German Cup and sit 10 points behind Bayern Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table. Bayern's best chances of silverware is therefore in the Champions League where they have been drawn to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool: Klopp must unleash £120k-p/w "magician" vs Spurs

Liverpool will face their toughest challenge of the season so far when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this evening. Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to extend the Reds' unbeaten record as arguably two of the most impressive teams in the league go head-to-head in a titanic clash.

A comeback win against Leicester City in midweek ensured progress in the EFL Cup, but the German will certainly make a few changes to his starting XI in order to freshen his side up and this will include a reshuffle of the midfield.

How did Wataru Endo perform against Leicester City?

The midfield three were in excellent form against the Foxes, with Endo shining in particular. He was perhaps a surprising signing by Klopp in the first place, yet the 30-year-old has added some experience to the heart of the midfield.

He has already made six appearances for the Anfield side, grabbing an assist, while the Japanese gem was solid against the Championship side on Wednesday. Endo finished the game with a 90% pass success rate while also making two key passes, winning three of his four aerial duels, and making four interceptions.

He is certainly proving to be a useful addition to the squad, yet Klopp should deploy one of his more expensive summer arrivals against Spurs – Dominik Szoboszlai.

Will Dominik Szoboszlai start for Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur?

The £120k-per-week sensation was one of Klopp’s marquee summer arrivals and has certainly showcased his abilities for the Reds so far.

cheick-doucoure-dominik-szoboszlai-transfer-premier-league

His displays over the previous 12 months obviously impressed Klopp as when compared to positional peers, the Hungarian midfielder ranks in the top 1% for shot-creating actions per 90 (5.37), the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.67) and the top 9% for assists per 90 (0.23), clearly demonstrating that he is one of the finest players in his position on the continent.

The 22-year-old hasn’t slowed down by moving to Liverpool either, already making eight appearances and scoring twice in the process. Lauded as the “Hungarian magician” by talent scout Jacek Kulig in 2022, the midfielder impressed in midweek having made a cameo off the bench. The former RB Leipzig starlet not only got on the scoresheet during his 25-minute cameo, but he also took 17 touches and had two shots during his brief time on the pitch.

His performances in the Premier League have been exceptional too. The youngster has an average Sofascore rating of 7.32 while averaging two key passes per game and succeeding with 1.2 dribbles per game. These statistics rank him third, and fourth for the latter two metrics across the Liverpool squad, clearly indicating that he has made an instant impression.

Klopp should unleash him from the first whistle this evening as the Hungarian gem could give him an added edge in the midfield, as this is likely where the game will be won or lost.

If the Reds secure another win today, they will be right in the mix with regard to challenging for the league title this season.
