Wrexham chief says he’d love to sign £100k-p/w duo at The Racecourse Ground

Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker has revealed the two dream signings he would love to bring to North Wales.

Wrexham preparing for League One

It has been another incredible season for the Welsh club, as they continue to go from strength to strength under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Wrexham earned promotion from the National League to League Two this time last year, and they have now made it into League One at the very first attempt, finishing second in the table.

It is now time to focus on life in the third tier of English football for Phil Parkinson and those in charge of transfers at the club, with new signings no doubt needed to take them to another level next season.

There is certainly reason for Wrexham supporters to start thinking bigger when it comes to potential signings, as they make their way up for the football pyramid, and Ker is dreaming big when it comes to two potential additions, albeit rather tongue-in-cheek.

Wrexham chief wants Liverpool star

Speaking to Sport Bible, executive director Ker admitted that he would love Wrexham to sign Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo and Wales defender Neco Williams: "So in the past, I've been asked this question (and) I've often cited sort of a Neco Williams as one, you know, he's from the area, he's a Premier League quality right back, plays for Wales. The day we are signing players like that will be a sign of how far we've come.

"In terms of who's one of my favourite players and who would I love to see playing in a Wrexham shirt? At present, I've got a real soft spot for Wataru Endo, who is kind of a perfect encapsulation of the fury in the summer when Liverpool missed out on Caicedo and Lavia and it was all doom and gloom and disaster.

"And then they sign Wataru Endo and it was like ‘well, who's this guy? I've never heard of him, he was only 16 million quid, what are they playing at?' And then he's been one of the signings of the season. I think there's a good lesson there for all of us in terms of, you know, the glitz and the glamour and the big price tags and ‘what are Liverpool doing not spending 100 million on a central midfielder’."

Liverpool players Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister

Granted, there is little to no chance of Wrexham signing a player of Endo and Williams' calibre in the summer transfer window or even in the next few years – they earn £50,000 per week each currently, which is miles out of their price range – but it is still a sign of the incredible progress made that Ker can even dream of such additions.

This is a glorious era at The Racecourse Ground – one that supporters need to treasure even despite whatever lofty future ambitions they may have – and the hope is that Reynolds and McElhenney are still just getting started, eventually guiding the club into the Premier League.

Should that happen, maybe Wrexham will be able to dream about signing a player like Endo, but for now, their focus will be on attaining some names with League One experience.

Time running out for Bayern Munich! German giants given ultimatum over Jonathan Tah signing as Vincent Kompany's side stall in bid for Bayer Leverkusen star

Bayern Munich have reportedly been given an ultimatum over signing Jonathan Tah by Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern linked with Tah transferLeverkusen want to keep defenderGerman rivals issued an ultimatumWHAT HAPPENED?

After winning the Bundesliga last season, Leverkusen centre-back Tah was linked with a move to Bayern – but for now, he remains at Xabi Alonso's side. states the 28-year-old has wanted to join the Bavarian outfit for quite some time but if there is no new offer for him by the weekend, he will stay at his current club.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Tah and his Leverkusen team-mates had a superb, nearly unbeaten season; winning the league and DFB-Pokal, and finishing as runners-up in the Europa League. With his success and the fact he is in the last year of his contract, the German international would seem ripe for the taking. But Leverkusen need to plan for the season ahead and with their title defence beginning in less than three weeks, they need to know where Bayern stand if they are to lose such a key player.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tah, who reportedlyrefused to extend his contract at Leverkusen, has made more than 350 appearances for the club over the years and manager Alonso wants him to stay for a while longer.

He told reporters last week:“I’m planning with Jona because he’s so important to us, on the pitch, but also off the pitch. That’s my idea at the moment. But I’m not turning a blind eye to the situation. We’ll see what happens. He’s fully focused, a top professional. I have no reason to complain.”

Leeds struck gold signing legend who would now be worth more than Rutter

Leeds United will go into tomorrow's clash against Watford almost expectant that another positive result will follow, with Daniel Farke's Whites last losing in the Championship in late December away at West Bromwich Albion.

Georginio Rutter could well be absent for the late clash at Vicarage Road however, somewhat of a blow when you consider his importance to the Leeds runaway train currently – the Frenchman onto a staggering seven goals and 18 assists in all competitions now.

Yet, Farke's men should still have enough firepower courtesy of the likes of Crysencio Summerville and others to overwhelm the Hornets tomorrow night.

Summerville and the other electric attackers Leeds have at their disposal will strive to become icons of the football club if they win promotion by starring in the Premier League, aspiring to be like this former Whites legend who wowed supporters at Elland Road regularly in the top flight.

Crysencio Summerville.

Tony Yeboah's transfer to Leeds

Tony Yeboah would join the Whites for £2.9m back in 1995 after an impactful time in Germany up front, bagging 89 goals from 156 games for Eintracht Frankfurt before taking to English football swimmingly.

The Ghanaian centre-forward would become an instant Leeds icon, firing in 12 goals from 18 appearances during his debut 1994/95 campaign.

He would endear himself to the Leeds fanbase with sumptuous strike after sumptuous strike, including a memorable solo strike against Wimbledon and a hall-of-fame pearler against Liverpool the season after his breakout campaign in West Yorkshire.

Looking back, forking out £2.9m for the prolific African striker was an absolute bargain who managed to net 30 goals from just 59 Leeds games.

But, when you look at the same fee paid by 2024's inflated standards, Yeboah would end up demanding an amount that's worth more than former TSG 1899 Hoffenheim man and current Leeds star Rutter.

Tony Yeboah's transfer value in 2024

Casting an eye over TotallyFootball's Transfer Index, that small sum of £2.9m paid in 1994 hikes all the way up to a staggering £27.8m in 2024.

That would make Yeboah the most valued asset currently on the Whites' books, shooting to the top of the list ahead of Ethan Ampadu and an aforementioned Rutter.

Leeds' most valuable players – 2023/24

1. Ethan Ampadu

€22.2m (£18.9m)

2. Illan Meslier

€22m (£18.8m)

3. Wilfried Gnonto

€20.4m (£17.4m)

4. Georginio Rutter

€18.8m (£16m)

5. Archie Gray

€15.6m (£13.3m)

Sourced by Football Transfers

Yeboah would even find himself being worth more than regular first-team faces Illan Meslier and Archie Gray if he was about today, despite the pair accumulating 80 appearances in total for the Whites over all competitions this season.

The Ghanaian attacker's time at Elland Road would end up being short-lived however despite his presence going down as legendary, leaving for Hamburger SV back in Germany in 1997.

That deal in 2024 would demand an £11m fee to take place according to the Transfer Index, instead of the £1.9m coughed up by Hamburg at the time.

Georginio Rutter

Leeds fans will hope that their modern-day selection of heroes stay put for longer, with Rutter potentially strutting his stuff in the Premier League next season if the Whites push on and make an immediate return to the top flight.

England ban football warm-ups after Rory Burns injury

Ashley Giles has never made any secret of his disapproval of his side playing football

George Dobell in Cape Town03-Jan-2020England have sounded the final whistle on football as a warm-up activity in training sessions.Ashley Giles, the director of England’s men’s teams, has never made any secret of his disapproval of his side playing football. And, after Rory Burns became the latest player to sustain a football-related injury, Giles and Chris Silverwood, the England coach, have decided to ban the activity.Burns suffered serious ligament damage to his ankle after landing awkwardly while playing football as a warm-up to training on Thursday. He was subsequently ruled out of the rest of the series in South Africa and will fly back to England on Friday night. Jonny Bairstow also suffered a football-related injury in Sri Lanka at the end of 2018 while, in the past, Joe Denly and James Anderson have also been hurt playing the game.Giles said when he took the job that he was unhappy to see football as part of England’s warm-up. But he was persuaded by senior players that it was an important part of the bonding process of the squad and agreed to review it once the World Cup had finished. The injury to Burns appears to have strengthened his resolve.Giles banned football from Warwickshire when he was director of cricket there. England have denied suggestions football has been banned at all counties as a warm-up activity, saying it is up to each individual county to decide. The England management team will discuss whether they need to call-up a replacement for Burns over the next day or two. They have, at present, only one reserve batsman – Bairstow – in the squad and are likely to consider Dawid Malan, James Vince and Keaton Jennings as options. But with the squad size still 18 and only two Tests left after this, it is far from certain they will send for anyone.Meanwhile, Jofra Archer may also have played his final game in the series. He will undergo a second scan on his sore right elbow on Friday after the first one proved inconclusive.

Clement drops Lawrence in predicted Rangers lineup vs Dundee

Glasgow Rangers’ European dream ended on Thursday evening as Benfica came away from Ibrox with a 1-0 victory.

The result does mean the Light Blues can now solely focus on domestic matters and with an injury list that seems to be never-ending, perhaps it is a good thing.

Philippe Clement will lead his side into one more game before the international break as they face Dundee at Dens Park tomorrow afternoon.

The Tayside outfit are enjoying a decent season in the Premiership, currently occupying sixth spot in the table.

In their previous two domestic clashes this term, Rangers have scored eight times and conceded only once against their upcoming opponents and another convincing win will ensure the club remain at the summit heading towards the final furlong.

Following the European exertions in midweek, Clement may make a change or two to his starting XI for the trip to Dundee…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

The Englishman was unlucky not to keep a clean sheet in midweek, yet his fine performance in the first leg arguably kept the Light Blues in the tie.

23 clean sheets in 47 appearances proves he has been in wonderful form since moving north of the border last summer and if he can secure another one tomorrow, the Gers will head into the international break in good spirits.

2 RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier

The captain failed to get on the scoresheet or grab an assist against Benfica, but in two matches against Dundee this term, he has scored twice and provided an assist.

This could perhaps be a good omen ahead of the clash tomorrow and Tavernier will be more than up for the task as he looks to lead his club to another Premiership title.

3 CB – Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

Like Butland and Tavernier, Goldson is the first name on the team sheet when he is fit. Indeed, the centre-back has only missed two league ties so far this season.

A few mistakes have crept into his game of late, and he has struggled to deal with long balls over the top, with certain teams exploiting this to good effect, most notably Celtic and Aberdeen.

4 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

The Scottish defender is swiftly becoming a mainstay in the heart of the defence alongside Goldson, with the duo forming a solid partnership.

Souttar was a colossus against Benfica. Not only did he make seven clearances, but the defender also won five of his seven duels, completed 92% of his passes and lost possession only seven times during the clash.

It was another rock-solid display by the former Hearts star, and he will retain his place to play Dundee.

5 LB – Ridvan Yilmaz

Ridvan Yilmaz

The Turkish defender has claimed the starting slot on the left side of the defence from Borna Barisic and the Light Blues look a much better team for it.

In the top flight this season, Yilmaz has created six big chances along with averaging 1.7 key passes per game and his attacking abilities are getting better and better.

6 CM – John Lundstram

John Lundstram for Rangers.

It is surely only a matter of when, not if, that Lundstram secures a contract extension, especially with his performances under Clement.

The midfielder has missed just one match since the Belgian took over in mid-October and his consistency has been key to the Gers' success recently.

The 30-year-old will keep his place in the heart of the midfield against Dundee and if he maintains his current form, the Ibrox side should record a comfortable victory.

7 CM – Mohamed Diomande

Mohammed Diomande

The January signing has not taken long to fully settle in at Ibrox. The 22-year-old has already scored twice in just ten appearances, and he certainly looks like a player who will have a big future in the game.

He was rather subdued against Benfica, however, losing possession 17 times while winning just two of his nine contested duels, and he was subbed off for Nico Raskin during the dying embers of the game.

8 RW – Scott Wright

Rangers winger Scott Wright.

The winger was a surprise starter against Benfica and many felt that it could perhaps be his final chance to really show Clement what he is made of.

The Scot delivered a positive performance, making one key pass, succeeding with three of his five dribble attempts, and winning four of his six ground duels, showcasing his physical strength.

With Ross McCausland not quite match fit, Wright will be given another start against Dundee tomorrow.

9 AM – Todd Cantwell

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Tom Lawrence has not done much wrong recently, but he could drop to the bench for tomorrow's clash as Cantwell comes back into the starting XI.

The former Norwich City starlet missed the previous five matches due to a hamstring injury prior to coming off the bench in midweek, and a start against Dundee could see him gain vital minutes.

10 LW – Rabbi Matondo

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

With Abdallah Sima and Oscar Cortes out, Matondo could get the nod on the left wing. The £3m dynamo was dubbed “electrifying” by former Wales manager Ryan Giggs and his pace can cause the Dundee backline plenty of issues.

Matondo has scored four times and grabbed four assists this season, despite suffering several injury issues which have restricted him to 25 appearances.

If he can hit the ground running against Dundee, there is no doubt he will be key to unlocking their defence during the clash.

Gary Lineker: Net worth, wife, salary, age, MOTD, HMRC tax incident & more

From being one of England's best-ever international goalscorers to one of the most well-known presenters on British television, Gary Lineker has made quite a career for himself.

To many, nowadays, Lineker is most recognised as the presenter of Match of the Day on BBC One.

Football FanCast has decided to take a deeper dive into his accomplishments, failures and what made him the man he is today.

Who is Gary Lineker?

Gary Lineker is a widely known figure in sports media. He presents BBC's Match of the Day program on Saturday nights, as well as presenting various international and domestic games that are aired on BBC.

He first made a name for himself as a player, turning out for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Leicester City and Barcelona, as well as being a prolific goalscorer for England at international level.

The former professional footballer was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame, as well as being awarded an OBE for his services to the sport.

How old is Gary Lineker?

Gary Lineker was born in Leicester, England. His date of birth was 30th November 1960. This currently makes Gary 63 years old.

What is Gary Lineker's net worth?

Gary Lineker's wealth is estimated to be around £30 million.

His football career will have treated him relatively well financially, but his sports media career has really stepped things up with multiple roles and sources of income.

The presenter has an endorsement deal with Walkers Crisps, which earns him roughly £1.5 million per year.

As well as this, the Englishman presented Champions League football for BT Sport, where he reportedly collected £3 million a year. He also has roles with the BBC, presenting on Match of the Day, various domestic cup games and international tournaments.

Gary Lineker's yearly salary

In 2022-23, Gary Lineker was revealed to be the highest earner at the BBC. He received a whopping take-home pay of around £1.35m.

As mentioned above, he also brings in around £1.5 million per year through his endorsement deal with Walkers.

Gary Lineker's wife

Gary Lineker is actually single at this moment in time, but his ex-wife goes by the name of Danielle Bux.

He married Danielle in September 2009, but the marriage only lasted six years, and they split in early 2016.

But the pair still get on rather well and were even spotted on holiday together in Ibiza, as well as attending Wimbledon last year.

Where does Gary Lineker live?

A little bit personal, but every celebrity's home can be viewed online nowadays.

It is believed that Gary currently resides in Barnes in West London, with his house situated alongside the River Thames.

The mansion is thought to be worth a whopping £4 million.

You may actually notice his living room from a Walkers advert and a couple of interviews he's done on live television before, or, of course, his podcast with Micah Richards and Alan Shearer.

How long has Gary Lineker been on Match of the Day?

It's almost a part of everyone's Saturday to sit down at around 10.30pm and watch all of the day's football highlights on Match of the Day. Of course, the analysis isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it just wouldn't be the same without Lineker, who effortlessly brings banter and unbiased opinions on incidents and matches, which makes the show that extra bit special.

Interestingly, before becoming a presenter on Match of the Day, Lineker was actually an analyst on the show himself. He hasn't looked back since, and over 24 years later, he is now the longest-serving host of the show after taking over from the legendary Des Lynam.

Is Gary Lineker leaving Match of the Day?

Don't worry, you can relax, Gary Lineker's plans to potentially leave the show have now been abandoned.

It was rumoured that Jermaine Jenas might be the new host of Match of the Day with Lineker possibly departing the role at the end of his current deal in 2025. However, it's been reported that the BBC are closing in on a new deal with the presenter, which will see him earn lots more money and take him to 2029 on the show's hotseat.

What Gary Lineker said about Qatar

When Lineker was hosting the BBC's coverage of the Qatar 2022 World Cup during the opening game between Qatar and Ecuador, things didn't start very well as the presenter took a slight dig at the hosts in his opening monologue:

"It’s the most controversial World Cup in history and a ball hasn’t even been kicked.

"Ever since FIFA chose Qatar back in 2010, the smallest nation to have hosted football’s greatest competition has faced some big questions.

"From accusations of corruption in the bidding process to the treatment of migrant workers who built the stadiums where many lost their lives.

"Homosexuality is illegal here, women’s rights and freedom of expression are in the spotlight; also, the decision six years ago to switch the World Cup from summer to winter.

"Against that backdrop, there’s a tournament to be played, one that will be watched and enjoyed around the world. Stick to football, say FIFA – well, we will, for a couple of minutes at least."

Why Gary Lineker was suspended by the BBC

Back in March of last year, Lineker took to his personal X account to write about a video in which home secretary Suella Braverman unveiled plans to stop migrants crossing the Channel on small boats.

And he continued, stating: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.

“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”

It didn't stop there, either, as he stamped down on his position, stating that he would continue to speak up for the “voiceless” after a number of MPs took offence to his posts on X.

This is what led to his temporary suspension from the BBC, as they released a statement stating that he will not be returning to his long-time presenting role until they have got an "agreed and clear position on his use of social media".

However, the broadcaster giants ended up backing down and reinstating the presenter after backlash from pundits across the industry and fans all over social media.

Clubs Gary Lineker played for

Gary Lineker enjoyed a very successful football career both for club and country. He made 436 appearances, scoring 226 goals and laying on eight assists for five different domestic clubs.

His international career was just as impressive, as he appeared 80 times and bagged 48 goals along the way.

During his playing career, he won Footballer of the Year twice, five different top goalscorer awards in different competitions, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one FA Cup, one Spanish Cup, three Community Shields, was awarded an OBE in 1992 and inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.

The clubs he played for were Leicester City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Nagoya Grampus.

What happened between Gary Lineker and Lee Anderson

If there's one thing you need to know about Gary, it's that he won't back down. Especially on his personal X account.

Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson sparked up a bit of a challenge for Gary Lineker as he wanted him to come to his Ashfield constituency and run against him for parliament. This was on the back of Lineker's comments about Suella Braverman.

Anderson stated: "It looks like the BBC's highest-paid publicly funded stars can continue to bite the hand that feeds them. Lineker is laughing all the way to the bank while attacking our Home Secretary. Maybe he should stand for parliament, I hear Ashfield Labour are looking for a candidate."

However, it didn't stop there, as Gary later went on to mock the MP on his official X account after a back-and-forth regarding the government's Rwanda policy, with him even suggesting Anderson won't be in work come the next election.

Gary Lineker poo incident

When you've got a dodgy belly, there's very little you can do about it, which is what Gary Lineker found out during the World Cup in 1990.

The now-infamous incident during England's 1990 tournament opener against Ireland occurred when Lineker decided he couldn't make it to the toilet, so let out some human waste on the pitch.

There were early signs that Lineker ignored, as he started to feel some bowel problems the day before, but with it being the opening game of the tournament, he was desperate to play.

If he had the decision to make again he may have opted to sit out, as he was left rather embarrassed.

He stated: "It was like, 'Oh my god', but it was like everywhere. There's a bit, if you ever see the footage, where Gary Stevens comes over and asks what's wrong. And I go, 'I've s*** myself'. I just didn't know what to do. Thank God I had dark blue shorts on that day. I'm shovelling it out and rubbing myself on the grass like a dog."

Gary Lineker HMRC Tax incident

Gary Lineker was embroiled in a battle with HMRC over a £4.9 million tax bill.

HMRC had informed the presenter that he should have been classed as an employee, despite him operating as a freelancer for BT Sport and the BBC.

He took it upon himself to appeal to a tribunal to fight back against the action, which is designed to clamp down on tax avoidance by so-called disguised employees.

And it appeared as if it was just HMRC trying to get more money out of the former English striker, as a judge ruled that Lineker was a freelancer who had direct contracts with the two broadcasters, therefore the legislation did not apply to him.

Chelsea already have their own Musiala in 18y/o who’s "a magnet in the box"

If you had said that Chelsea wouldn't sign a single player in the 2024 January transfer window this time last year, you'd likely have been thought a fool.

The Pensioners spent an astounding £323m on new players last winter and another £435m in the summer, so it looked a sure bet that Todd Boehly and Co would be splashing the cash after Christmas this year as well.

However, just because the Blues didn't sign anyone doesn't mean they weren't linked to a number of quality players last month, with perhaps one of the most exciting being Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala.

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala.

While fans might be feeling a little disappointed that the young German didn't swap Bavaria for west London this winter, they shouldn't, as it means it should be easier for one of the club's most exciting youngsters to finally stake a claim for a place in Mauricio Pochettino's side.

Chelsea's interest in Jamal Musiala

Chelsea's interest in Musiala was reported by TEAMtalk early on in the window, although unsurprisingly, they weren't the only English side keen, as Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City were also linked.

Much of the interest seems to have stemmed from the fact that the young German has yet to agree to a new deal with FC Hollywood, which Transfers expert Fabrizio Romano reported via Caught Offside.

However, while it is impossible to be certain, it would appear that the reason this deal failed to materialize beyond simple interest is the same reason that the majority of big deals came to nothing this year: money.

With TEAMtalk claiming that it could cost the Blues up to £87m to secure their man, a deal always seemed unlikely as clubs have become increasingly fearful of profit and sustainability breaches in light of the punishments handed out to Everton and the potential punishments heading the way of Nottingham Forest.

Bringing Musiala back to Chelsea, where he spent his formative footballing years, would have been incredibly exciting and great fun to watch. Still, his remaining in Germany isn't necessarily bad for the Blues, especially if it allows the highly talented Leo Castledine to break into the team.

Leo Castledine could be Chelsea's own Jamal Musiala

Granted, claiming that an 18-year-old with a single senior appearance to his name could become as good a player as Musiala may seem outlandish. However, based on his impressive performances at the youth level and how those who have watched him play talk about him, it might not be.

For example, football talent scout Jacek Kulig stated that the youngster was part of a "crazy amount of talent" at Stamford Bridge just last year, and with the sort of numbers he has been putting up at Cobham, it would be hard to disagree.

So far, the London-born gem has made 94 appearances for the Blues' various youth sides, from the U18s to the U21s and their squad for the UEFA Youth League.

In those appearances, he has scored a genuinely impressive 30 goals and provided 13 assists, meaning he averages a goal involvement every 2.1 games, and considering he would have been around 15 years old when he started making appearances, that is outrageous.

He has also clearly left an impression on one of Chelsea's all-time greats, as John Terry described the dynamic midfielder as "a magnet in the box" when he made his first-team debut against Middlesbrough last month.

Finally, while the young ace prefers to play in central and central attacking roles, just like Musiala, he can be deployed all over the pitch, as he has experience playing as a winger, a centre-forward, and a wide midfielder. He has even played a couple of games at right-back, although it's probably not worth playing him there.

Chelsea could now finally unleash "incredible" 18 y/o after Broja exit

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 2, 2024

Ultimately, while it would have been great to bring the young German back to west London last month, the emergence of Castledine should be just as exciting for the Blues faithful – he's got a bright future ahead of him.

The sides were officially scheduled to play two warm-up games before the start of the tournament but an extra hit-out was agreed on between the camps when Stuart Law was West Indies’ coach. Before training on Tuesday, Glenn Maxwell compared the size of the Nursery Ground to Hurstville in Sydney, the venue of many a thumping score in Australia’s domestic one-day competition, and as a result this warm-up will likely provide a serious test of both sides’ containment bowling. As a part-time offspinner, Maxwell knows he will have his work cut out for him should he bowl to the likes of Chris Gayle and Andre Russell. But, while it is his batting that is most often discussed, he is clear on his objectives with the ball in hand.”Try not to get hit for six most of the time,” he laughed. “For me, I suppose, a lot of the time that I bowl, I just try to limit the boundary balls. As long as I’m doing that, if they hit some good shots off my bowling I’m not too fazed. If I’m limiting the boundary balls and giving myself the best chance to squeeze a few dot balls, bowl a couple of tight overs, it might create a bit of pressure at the other end.”Maxwell spent time at Lancashire after Australia’s tours of India and Pakistan, choosing to prepare for the summer in England and giving himself the best chance of making the Ashes squad rather than playing in the IPL. His stint in county cricket included seven List A games and while he performed modestly with the bat – his top score was 35 – he took wickets in all but one match and eight in all.”I think it’s important for me to just bowl in a partnership with someone,” he said. “That’s probably the clarity I have in my role and it’s something I did a bit in Dubai [against Pakistan] and India and started to get a few more overs, a bit more consistency… To have that continue into my time at Lancashire where I got plenty of time at the bowling crease, you get that rhythm, you get that feel of the ball coming out consistently. You need that as a part-time bowler, to have that consistency of time at the crease and get a few of the cobwebs out, I suppose.”His bowling may be a handy option but it is Maxwell’s destructive batting that has the real potential to dismantle attacks and the Nursery Ground may be just the first on this tour that struggles to contain his powerful hitting. But in this, too, Maxwell has found clarity on how he fits into the Australian side.”I suppose my role in the team is to adapt to whatever start we have, whether it be we get off to a flyer or we’ve lost a few early wickets. It’s just to adapt to whatever I get thrown into,” he said. “I just want to have an impact on games in a really positive way and be able to control the back end.”I have expectations on myself to finish off games and be the guy who’s standing there at the end of the game and making sure that we win the game.”
