Half-century from Hashim Amla and Dean Elgar also helped counter Australia’s reverse swing in Port Elizabeth

The Report by Brydon Coverdale10-Mar-2018Stumps
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAt tea, this day of Test cricket was bereft of life. It was not pining for the fjords, it had simply ceased to be. As Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla crawled along at 1.65 per over in the middle session, the only action of note came when the umpires tried to silence the brass band in the crowd. The musicians left the ground – at last, a controversial dismissal to generate some interest – but nothing could revive that particular session of cricket. It had run down the curtain and joined the now-invisible choir. And then for something completely different. After tea the ball started reverse-swinging, the wickets began to tumble, and the runs flowed. From 43 runs, two fours and no wickets between lunch and tea, suddenly there were 110 runs, 17 boundaries and five wickets between tea and stumps. AB de Villiers sprinted to a 62-ball half-century – by way of comparison, Elgar had taken 164 deliveries – and by stumps South Africa were in the lead. Had Amla and Elgar stayed together South Africa would have been lucky to be in the lead by stumps on day three. It was a curious day’s play, not so much slow burn as spontaneous combustion. As soon as the players returned from tea, the ball reversed. Mitchell Starc curled the fourth delivery of the session past Amla’s bat to bowl him for 56 from 148 balls, and in the next over, Josh Hazlewood enticed an edge behind from Elgar for 57 off 197 deliveries. And suddenly the game opened up. As if to signal the change, de Villiers drove the next ball for four through cover.Even as de Villiers moved the score along, wickets kept falling at the other end. Mitchell Marsh, whose sole wicket in Durban was his first in Test cricket for more than a year, snapped up two in two overs, reversing one in to trap Faf du Plessis lbw for 9 and then trapping Theunis de Bruyn in front for 1. Quinton de Kock on 9 was done in by a beautiful offbreak from Nathan Lyon, drifting, turning and beating the bat to clip his off stump. But by stumps, de Villiers had found a capable partner, and his stand with Vernon Philander was worth 36. They had moved the total along to 263 for 7, with de Villiers on 74 from 81 balls, Philander on 14, and South Africa’s advantage sitting at 20 runs. And although he had support here and there, de Villiers was responsible for that scoreline. He struck 14 boundaries and was typically powerful square of the wicket through the off side, also driving and pulling handsomely. It was an innings that would not have been out of place in a one-day international, and if he goes on to turn it into a century on day three it could be the match-defining performance. Already he had delivered South Africa from a position of stagnation to a position of strength. The day had stared with Elgar and nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada at the crease, and although it was a disappointing morning for Rabada off the field – he was hit with a level two Code of Conduct charge and could be suspended for the rest of the series for his shoulder bump with Steven Smith on day one – he enjoyed the chance to bat up the order and struck 29 before he chopped on to the bowling of Pat Cummins. It was the only wicket that would fall for the first two sessions, as Amla and Elgar painstakingly put together their 88-run partnership. Twice Amla was adjudged lbw only to be reprieved on review, first on 7 when he was found to have been struck outside the line of off stump by Cummins, and then on 40 when he had gained a thick inside edge onto his pad off Hazlewood.Amla brought up his fifty from his 122nd delivery and Elgar got there from his 164th with an edge through the slips for four – one of only two boundaries in the middle session. It felt as though while South Africa had wickets in hand, they had also failed to make the most of reasonable batting conditions. The loss of both Amla and Elgar within two overs after tea could have led to a collapse to reverse-swing, but for the counterattacking talent of de Villiers. In the end, South Africa found themselves ahead, the brass band was reinstated, and the day of Test cricket was revived.

Chand, bowlers steer Delhi to title

ScorecardPTI

Unmukt Chand’s half-century, and Delhi’s bowlers helped the team secure a 40-run win over Rajasthan, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali title in the tournament final at the Eden Gardens. The victory marked the extension of a superb domestic season for Delhi, who made the final of the Ranji Trophy earlier this year.Having elected to bat, Delhi got off to a fine start with Gautam Gambhir (27 off 23 balls) and Rishabh Pant (13 off 7) putting on 41 runs in 4.5 overs for the first wicket. However, two balls after Gambhir was bowled by legspinner Rahul Chahar, Delhi lost Pant, too, caught behind off Khaleel Ahmed.Delhi’s recovery, though, came soon, with Chand joining the in-form Dhruv Shorey (21 off 14) for a 48-run stand. After Chahar accounted for Shorey, Nitish Rana, a success story for Mumbai Indians last year, and an attractive batting option for IPL franchises at the auction, lasted only five balls for his seven as he registered his fourth consecutive single-digit score.Chand, however, rallied with the lower order and was the last batsman to be dismissed, in the 20th over. In his second game in the tournament, Chand finished with four fours and two sixes. Pant finished as the joint-leading run-getter of the tournament with 411 runs, including a hundred and four fifties at a strike-rate 195.71, while Shorey finished with 303 runs in seven innings at a strike-rate a shade under 142. Gambhir, though, had an underwhelming tournament with 172 runs in eight innings.Rajasthan’s chase was largely held together by Aditya Garhwal, who made a 36-ball 52 and was dismissed by seamer Lalit Yadav in the 12th over. His wicket triggered a collapse as Rajasthan slipped from 93 for 3 to 96 for 7 in less than two overs. Two of those wickets were picked up by left-arm seamer Kulwant Khejroliya, whose steep bouncer pushed Chetan Bist back and hit on the helmet, causing him to fall on to the stumps.Khejroliya finished as the joint fourth-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 14 wickets in 10 matches. Shorey, Chand and Khejroliya have set their reserve prices at INR 20 lakh. Delhi captain Pradeep Sangwan finished with two wickets to take his tournament tally to 13 wickets, while left-arm spinner Pawan Negi took 2 for 21 to end with 11 scalps. Negi and Sangwan have set their reserve prices at INR 50 lakh and 30 lakh respectively.Sangwan credited his bowlers for the victory. “We just spoke in the dressing room that we need our bowlers to step up,” he said after the match. He also credited the presence of past captains like Chand and Pant. “Their presence helps when it comes to setting fields. When I concede runs while bowling, Rishabh and Unmukt help in setting fields.”

Spurs: Postecoglou Could Land N17’s Next Harry Kane For £34m

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to sign a new star centre-forward before the summer transfer window slams shut in one week, having sold pre-eminent talisman Harry Kane to Bayern Munich for £100m this month.

New manager Ange Postecoglou has kicked things off impressively in the Premier League however, drawing away to Brentford before beating Manchester United 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Moves have been made this summer, with James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Alejo Veliz, Manor Solomon and Guglielmo Vicario joining the club while Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro's loan moves have been made permanent, but a new talisman is still required.

What's the latest on Santiago Gimenez to Tottenham?

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez has been on Tottenham's radar this summer – according to the player's agent, Morris Pagniello – with claims that the Lilywhites have met with the player's entourage and were ready to lodge a €40m (£34m) offer.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Pagniello stated that there is still time left on the market, and while the 22-year-old forward is contented with the Dutch champions, this could be one to keep an eye on as the window approaches the business end.

How good is Santiago Gimenez?

The Argentina-born Mexico international has been in fine fettle over in the Netherlands, having netted 28 goals across all competitions last term as Feyenoord gleaned the Dutch league title.

The 18-cap ace was described as "on fire" by talent scout Jacek Kulig earlier in 2023 as he fired in goals like a fusillade of missiles, and with such impressive goalscoring feats, he has arrested the attention of the Tottenham hierarchy.

Indeed, Gimenez ranks among the top 3% of forwards in the Men's 'Next Eight' divisions over the past year for goals, the top 5% for total shots and the top 1% for touches in the attacking area per 90, as per FBref.

Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez

Dirk Kuyt has certainly been coloured impressed by his performances, even going as far as to say that he is the "best" striker in the Netherlands.

He said:

“He’s back here in the middle of the defenders and he’s really fast,"

"Watching the keeper before he shoots, the rest. In my opinion, he is currently the best striker in the Eredivisie."

Gimenez is not completely similar to Kane in terms of style, giving that he serves as the quintessential focal frontman at the tip of the attack.

Kane, while one of the most frightening goalscorers in Europe – he scored 32 goals for the Lilywhites last term – is also one of the most creative attackers around, ranking among the top 10% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues for shot-creating actions and the top 4% for progressive passes per 90.

The latter metric indicates a tendency to drop deep and influence the play by placing passes through the thirds, splitting the line and allowing his box-crashing teammates to latch onto his ball.

Gimenez wouldn't offer that kind of threat, after all, he created only 0.6 key passes per game in the Eredivisie last year, but he would be able to provide the kind of cutting edge that would be shades of Kane.

And anyway, Maddison's arrival has signalled a newfound layer of supplementation from the centre, with the playmaker having already provided two assists this year, creating four key passes per game, so deploying a striker such as Gimenez could prove to be a resounding success.

Postecoglou must make sure Kane is replaced over the next week, and while that is certainly a tall order, Gimenez's prolificness could at least ease that burden in N17.

Aston Villa: Emery could look to secure "agreement" for "gifted" star

Aston Villa moving for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso this summer under Unai Emery would not be a 'complete surprise', according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Giovani Lo Celso moving to Aston Villa?

According to Birmingham Live, Lo Celso is on a list of targets at Villa Park this summer; nevertheless, Tottenham are likely to ask for an obligation to buy to be included in any prospective loan deal for the £70k-a-week ace.

Napoli have also been in the mix to sign the Argentina international in this off-season, though they could pull the plug on their interest due to the contract renewal of Piotr Zielinski.

Spanish journalist Javi Miguel claimed earlier in the window that Barcelona manager Xavi requested to his employers' hierarchy that La Blaugrana target Lo Celso alongside Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo and now-signed midfielder Oriol Romeu.

Nevertheless, Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor indicated that Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou would be keen to keep Lo Celso around this term alongside teammate Tanguy Ndombele, stating to GIVEMESPORT: "I would keep both players, and it looks like Postecoglou will do that despite interest from elsewhere."

Last term, Lo Celso, who has been hailed as "technically gifted", featured 29 times in all competitions on loan at Villarreal, registering two goals and three assists in total, as per Transfermarkt.

His future at Tottenham remains up in the air and transfer insider Jones wouldn't be shocked to see him link up with Aston Villa boss Emery in the West Midlands.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Jones stated: "He’s had a good pre-season yet still serious doubts remain over whether he has a future at Spurs and if that drags on it would not be a complete surprise to see Emery look into whether an agreement can be found. To be fair, Lo Celso probably has more chance of succeeding under Ange than anyone else in the recent past but if even now he can’t find a role in the set-up then he really does have to get out of there."

What next for Aston Villa?

Aston Villa are shaping up well ahead of the new campaign and have been savvy in the transfer market, recruiting three additions in the form of Youri Tielemans, Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres, as per Transfermarkt.

Reports from Spain transcribed via Sport Witness claim that Barcelona forward Ferran Torres is another potential arrival at Villa Park and they are still pushing to land his signature.

Football Insider have revealed that former Wolves winger Adama Traore has emerged as a surprise target for Aston Villa this summer and is being pursued by Emery due to his 'pace and cutting edge' that could be put to use in the final third.

Czech outlet Idnez via METRO have signalled that Manchester United backup goalkeeper Matej Kovar is being courted by the Villans to provide competition for Emiliano Martinez and Robin Olsen between the sticks.

Sparta Prague and clubs in Germany are keen to snap up the 23-year-old stopper; nevertheless, they are put off by the £6 million price tag set by Manchester United.

Over the next few weeks, Aston Villa could be set to shake things up and bring in further squad depth as they get ready to juggle both domestic and European football in 2023/24.

£55m Newcastle United Midfielder Impresses In Pre-Season

Ever since Sandro Tonali joined Newcastle United, the running joke has been his constant lack of smile, with many quick to joke that the Italian would much rather still be at AC Milan, rather than the Magpies. His debut display showed anything but an uncommitted player, however, with the Italian putting in an impressive first shift as a Newcastle player. We may not have got that big smile yet, but Eddie Howe certainly has reason to remain positive about his new arrival. With Champions League football to think about in the coming campaign, every player in Howe’s squad will have a job to do. And, given Tonali’s price tag of £55m, he, more so than others, will have the pressure on him to perform.Just 23, the midfielder has the chance to become a constant feature in a potential era to remember at St James’ Park.

Sandro Tonali impresses on Newcastle debut

And while not every new signing is having a great pre-season – check out Kai Havertz at Arsenal for instance – it appears the new NUFC man is settling in smoothly on the pitch.

As you can see from the video, Tonali’s performance, whilst not exactly flashy, was incredibly neat and tidy. Meanwhile, something to note was how physical the Italian was, which should see him settle into the intensity of Premier League football rather quickly.

He also played a part in the build-up to the first goal of the game, playing a fine first-touch pass to grab himself a pre-assist.

Newcastle ran out 2-1 winners at Ibrox against Rangers in what was Alan McGregor’s testimonial match. The Magpies initially took the lead through Miguel Almiron, before Sam Lammers equalised for the hosts after the break.

Securing the victory late on, Harrison Ashby found the back of the net in the 87th minute to hand Newcastle a solid second game of pre-season against the Scottish Premiership side.

Howe’s side started their pre-season against Gateshead, of course, winning 3-2 in a back-and-forth affair as they came back from two goals down.

The Newcastle manager commented on his side’s most recent display, saying: “Bits of the first half was outstanding, some really good football.

“Second half wasn’t as pretty and clean but there were a lot of changes, we managed to find a way to win again and that’s a great thing.”

What kind of player is Sandro Tonali?

Tonali is not a player that will necessarily leave you in awe. But he is a player that you’ll look back on as an important cog in a well-oiled machine, sitting at the base of a midfield three.

To get a better understanding of his talents, Football FanCast have done an in-depth profile on the player which you can read here.

The Italian’s arrival is particularly positive for Bruno Guimaraes, who will have a greater license to advance into a more offensive role next season, such is the discipline of Tonali.

Last season, the Brazilian was involved in 10 goals in all competitions, scoring five and assisting a further five. Suddenly, however, those numbers could increase even more if he is allowed to advance more often.

Tonali certainly has plenty of time to improve, too, given the fact that he’s just 23. And, with that, giving him time to settle wouldn’t exactly be a bad thing. After all, he’s not coming into a Newcastle side in desperate need of reinforcements.

After his debut performance, though, it’s clear that the Magpies have got themselves a player who is more than capable of stepping into England’s top flight, perhaps helping his new side to even greater heights than last season.

Here are some Twitter reactions after his eye-catching display.

Liverpool Transfer News; Talks Advancing For "Perfect" Klopp Signing

Liverpool’s talks with OGC Nice for midfielder Khephren Thuram are reportedly progressing.

What’s the latest Liverpool transfer news?

The Reds and Jurgen Klopp have made a start on their summer business by bringing in Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton in a deal worth an initial £35m but could rise to £55m.

However, the Argentine midfielder doesn’t look like he’ll be the only addition in the middle of the pitch, especially with James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all leaving the club when their contracts officially expire at the end of the month.

Liverpool were linked with a move for Thuram back in April and recent reports suggested a bid was expected to arrive in July, and it looks as if the Frenchman could soon be on his way to Merseyside.

Journalist Rudy Galetti shared an update regarding Liverpool and Thuram on Thursday morning, saying on Twitter that talks are progressing over a deal that could be worth £38m, with terms between the Reds and player not an issue.

“Talks between Liverpool and OGC Nice for Khephren Thuram are progressing.

“The 2 clubs are working to reach an agreement for around €40/45m. No issues on personal terms.”

khephren-thuram-liverpool-naby-keita-transfer-premier-league

Who is Khephren Thuram?

Thuram is primarily a central midfielder who can play in a holding role or on the left of midfield and appears to be going from strength to strength with a career-high €40m Transfermarkt valuation.

The 22-year-old has made 138 appearances for his current employers, contributing to 19 goals, and journalist Zach Lowy feels he could be the perfect signing for Klopp’s team.

“Khephren Thuram is just the sort of player that Liverpool need to transform their midfield. Elite ball carrier for someone of his size and really effective at winning the ball high up the pitch — perfect signing for Klopp’s side.”

As per FBref, Thuram ranks in the top 1% of midfielders for successful take-ons that lead to a shot and top 4% for progressive carrying distance, showing how he could be a shrewd box-to-box midfielder under Klopp.

He was one of Nice’s top performers last season, as per WhoScored, with his average 6.91 match rating a better score than any other Liverpool midfielder, again showing how he could be a solid addition in both the short and long run.

It looks as if a transfer is going in the right direction, so a deal will be one to watch over the coming weeks with the new season rapidly approaching.
