Sheffield United have found their new Sharp & it's not Brereton or Cannon

With the long, drawn-out international break nearly over, the competitive Championship will soon kick back into gear to give us more entertaining clashes to savour.

Sheffield United’s meeting with Coventry City this coming Friday night promises to be another spectacle to behold in the second tier, with Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues on a mission to nail down a playoff spot when heading to Bramall Lane, whilst the Blades cling onto their automatic promotion dreams.

One misstep could see the South Yorkshire outfit fall out of the coveted top two spots, with Chris Wilder hopeful that the likes of Ben Brereton Diaz and Tom Cannon can finally step up to the mark in the crunch games to come, after largely disappointing as statement January additions.

How Brereton & Cannon have performed at Sheffield United

To help boost his side’s firepower, Wilder welcomed Brereton Diaz and Cannon to the building during the hectic mid-season transfer window, well aware that the potent pairing boast 75 career strikes in the second tier.

The Chile international has shown signs of his previous Blackburn Rovers best without blowing anyone away, with the short-term loanee picking up three goals and two assists from 11 appearances at Bramall Lane.

Cannon, on the other hand, has just been a letdown from minute one of his bumper £10m move from Leicester City, with the Irishman yet to find the back of the net for his new employers from eight clashes.

Unfortunately, the out-of-sorts 22-year-old has found himself out of his new manager’s starting lineup plans due to Sheffield United’s next Billy Sharp…

Wilder's next Billy Sharp

This will feel like a wild comparison to make for many Blades supporters reading, considering Sharp is held in very high esteem to the red and white half of South Yorkshire to this day, having bagged a ridiculous 129 goals during two spells at his hometown side.

But, much like the 39-year-old veteran felt whenever he graced the Bramall Lane pitch, Tyrese Campbell will feel very much at home donning his new United colours, with the end of his time at former employers Stoke City, unfortunately, putting him through the wringer.

Injury issues at the Potters saw Campbell miss an eye-watering 343 days of action in total during his bumpy six years at the club, leading to a low 36 goals being registered from 164 games.

To draw comparisons, Sharp also struggled to find his goalscoring groove in the build-up to his big return to South Yorkshire, with unmemorable spells at Leeds United and Southampton passing him by, before the familiar doors of Bramall Lane opened back up for him.

Now, much like Sharp managed when diving back in at United, Campbell has become his side’s most reliable sharpshooter up top, with the 6-foot centre-forward the promotion-chasing club’s top scorer in league action with nine strikes fired home from 26 contests.

Three of those goals have come during his team’s last five league encounters, with a hope that the 25-year-old can follow even more in Sharp’s footsteps by guiding Wilder’s men to a promotion success, considering the EFL legend has three of these accolades next to his name playing for the Blades.

If the revitalised number 23 can hammer home more strikes like this venomous effort at Loftus Road between now and the end of the season, Wilder and Co could be heading for an instant return to the Premier League, with Campbell no doubt seen as a modern great thereafter.

West Ham battling Arsenal and Liverpool to sign "very rare" £67m striker

West Ham United are now battling Arsenal and Liverpool for the signing of a “very rare” kind of centre-forward, with Graham Potter already making plans for life after Evan Ferguson returns to Brighton from his loan spell.

West Ham identify Evan Ferguson alternatives for next season

Ferguson’s temporary stint at the London Stadium doesn’t include an option or obligation to buy, so if the Irishman impresses enough from now until the end of this Premier League season, West Ham would need to head back to the negotiating table to discuss an extended stay.

That being said, Ferguson is yet to open his account for the Hammers, so West Ham co-chair David Sullivan could even decide to go in a different direction if he can’t make a significant enough impact.

West Ham are reportedly already planning for life after the 20-year-old. Indeed, Man United striker Rasmus Hojlund is on West Ham’s summer radar, with the 22-year-old Denmark international seen as an alternative to Ferguson (TEAMtalk).

Meanwhile, there are also reports that Roma striker Tammy Abraham is a target for West Ham, with the current AC Milan loanee and former Chelsea striker subject to contact from east London (TEAMtalk).

Niclas Füllkrug could be back from injury sooner than expected in a boost for West Ham, and may even return to the fold this month (Claret & Hugh), but the German’s time in England has been blighted by a lack of availability and isn’t getting any younger.

Michail Antonio’s horrific car crash means West Ham will be without the Jamaica international for a lengthy period as well. Danny Ings is also out of contract at the end of this season, meaning it is quite simply imperative that the Irons bring in another striker this summer.

West Ham battling Arsenal and Liverpool to sign Hugo Ekitiké

According to journalist Loic Tanzi, via his colleague Christopher Michel on X, Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitiké is attracting attention from Potter’s side.

Hugo Ekitike for Frankfurt.

The Frenchman has come on leaps and bounds since departing PSG for the Bundesliga, scoring 18 goals in 35 total appearances so far this season, so he’s unsurprisingly on the radar of elite English sides.

Eintracht have set a price tag of around £67 million to sell the 22-year-old, with West Ham battling Arsenal and Liverpool in the race for Ektike.

Michel has heavily endorsed Ekitike as a centre-forward option, calling him a “very rare” commodity for his age and a “complete striker”, but it remains to be seen whether West Ham can sway him considering the stiff competition.

“Heki is an exceptional player at 22 years old,” wrote Michel on X. “Yes, he lacks directness. But such a complete striker is very rare in Europe.”

He’s better than Dalot: Man Utd must regret selling "monster" star for £15m

One of the biggest challenges Manchester United have faced this season has been adapting Ruben Amorim’s new back three system. Under Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but since Amorim’s appointment, that has changed to a 3-4-2-1.

Perhaps the players who have had to adapt most are those out wide. Some wingers, including Amad and Alejanrdro Garnacho, have become number 10s, whilst Noussair Mazroui has shown versatility, playing at both centre-back and wing-back. Patrick Dorgu was signed as an out-and-out wing-back, to bolster Amorim’s options out wide too.

Another player who has been used only as a wing-back in the last few months is Diogo Dalot.

Diogo Dalot’s time under Amorim so far

Dalot was excellent for United in the 2023/24 campaign. He played 50 times, scoring three goals and grabbing five assists, playing a huge role in helping his side to FA Cup glory. Former Red Devils captain Gary Neville said he is “the right-back for the future” at Old Trafford.

However, things have not been as easy this term for the Portuguese. He has played 40 times under both managers but has just one goal and two assists. His role has vastly changed from playing as a right-back or left-back under Ten Hag. Now, Amorim has deployed him on the left and right flank as a wing-back.

His record for the new boss suggests he has perhaps taken longer to adapt. He has played 22 matches so far but is yet to register an assist, which might be concerning from one of United’s main widemen. He did get on the scoresheet against FCSB in the Europa League.

It has been a tough season for Dalot, who football analyst and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown H, brutally said has been “garbage for months” at the start of February. He is certainly one of the players who has needed to adapt the most to Amorim’s system.

Perhaps the new United boss wishes he had a former Red Devils star to call upon at wing-back…

Man United have sold a better player than Dalot

There was a lot of change at Old Trafford in the summer, with some significant player departures. Key members of Ten Hag’s squad left, including boyhood Red Scott McTominay who joined Napoli.

Another notable departure was Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Englishman left Old Trafford after five seasons of donning the famous red shirt with the London-born defender making the move back to the capital, joining West Ham United for just £15m.

Since making the move to the London Stadium, Wan-Bissaka has impressed. Although renowned for his “monster” defensive ability, as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, he has grabbed two goals and two assists, more goal involvements than Dalot has managed this term.

His most recent goal involvement came away to Arsenal in the Hammers’ most recent Premier League outing. It was a sensational assist for his captain, Jarrod Bowen. In a one-vs-one situation against Riccardo Calafiori, the West Ham number 29 beat him with a few stepovers and whipped a lovely ball onto Bowen’s head.

Wan-Bissaka was a key player at Old Trafford for several years. The right-back, who also slotted in on the opposite side at times, played 190 times, scoring twice and registering 13 assists.

Looking back on it, perhaps the Red Devils wish they still had Wan Bissaka to call upon now. Although he is not a natural wing-back, his assist against Arsenal showed just how capable he is in the final third, and he is of course outperforming Dalot when it comes to goal involvement this season.

Aaron-Wan-Bissaka

Maybe Wan-Bissaka is a player that Amorim wishes he still had available to him as he continues to drag his side up the table.

Pant 93, Iyer 87 help India wrest back control

Taijul and Shakib took four wickets each for Bangladesh, who lost their grip on the game after reducing India to 94 for 4

Sidharth Monga23-Dec-2022Bangladesh took three wickets for 67 runs in the first session of day two and six wickets for 88 in the final session. These were encouraging passages of play given that they were defending 227 on a spinners’ pitch, but in the middle session, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer wreaked havoc. India scored 140 for the loss of just one wicket between lunch and tea, which enabled them to take an 87-run first-innings lead on a deteriorating pitch.Pant scored 93 off 104 – his sixth dismissal in the 90s to go with five Test hundreds. He is now the only batter among those with at least five hundreds to score more nineties than hundreds. Iyer, himself going at a strike-rate of 82.85, fell in the 80s for the second time in this series. The two added 159 runs in 30.2 overs after coming together at 94 for 4.Related

India bowlers rally to make up for Kuldeep's absence

A Mominul innings worth celebrating

It was a familiar sight. Pant walked out after Bangladesh had taken three early wickets with excellent bowling, but the fielding side was already retreating. It was 48 for 3 in Chattogram and 72 for 3 here, and both times Pant started his innings with a long-on and deep midwicket in place. Bangladesh’s best bowler in these conditions, Taijul Islam, was in operation, but he immediately ceased to look like a threat. Not to India’s top three, though, who all fell to Taijul. He was immaculate with his lengths, drawing them forward without letting them attack. The pitch had been at its best on day one, and was doing things now. So the batters didn’t quite trust it to take the risks.Captain KL Rahul fell in an awkward fashion, practically caught on the crease despite shimmying down the wicket. Shubman Gill started fluently on the first evening, but managed to add only six to his score in the first seven overs of the day. In the eighth, Gill, the only batter in India’s top four who sweeps regularly, chose the wrong ball to go down to: full and straight, no need for a review.Taijul Islam dismissed each of India’s top three before lunch•Associated PressBy now Pant started making fielders look redundant. He hit five sixes, clearing a boundary rider on each occasion. With two of these sixes, he swung so hard the bat slipped out of the bottom hand upon contact. If you think it was a chancy counterattack, think again: he was not in control of only 11 of the 103 balls he faced; only Kohli had a better control percentage among India’s batters. He hit sixes off Mehidy’s offspin too, apparently getting too close to the pitch of the ball to get the required elevation, but imparting enough power to still clear the ground at a flat trajectory.Pant has now hit 55 sixes in Test cricket, the joint-seventh-most by an India batter. However, post-tea, resuming on 86, he stopped looking for sixes. Perhaps it had something to do with his five previous dismissals in the 90s. The watchful approach didn’t quite work as he fell going on the back foot to Mehidy for the second time this series. It was the inside edge last time, the outside edge here.Iyer was the quieter partner, but not by much. Bangladesh tried to bounce him, but he hooked with freedom. Against spin he was just as brutal as Pant, especially when going deep in the crease and manufacturing back-foot shots. He was good at the sweep too, but eventually chose one straight ball from Shakib and was done in by low bounce. Shakib and Taijul then took the last three wickets for 43 runs.Bangladesh’s openers survived the six overs that were possible before stumps.

Klopp became Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer earlier this year but just a few months into the post, reports have surfaced that he is unhappy there. However, his agent Marc Kosicke has suggested those rumours are not true. Journalist Florian Plettenberg added that Klopp has 'no intention' of taking on a new head coach role next season, not even at Madrid or Brazil, but teams have enquired about him.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Klopp spent the best part of a decade at Liverpool but left after running out of energy in the role in 2024. Less than a season after stepping away from management, the German has been linked with Madrid – who may part company with Carlo Ancelotti – and Brazil, who are looking for a new coach. But it seems Klopp is staying put for now.

first over. David Willey was rotated out of the playing XI for the first two T20Is but made an immediate impact on his return when he removed Quinton de Kock with the third ball of the innings. Willey pitched it up from the get-go, de Kock defended, then he prodded and then he attempted a lazy drive, with no foot movement and dragged the ball on to his leg stump. For the third match in succession, de Kock was the first man out and he could so very nearly have been followed by Rilee Rossouw. Willey got the ball to move away from the left-hander twice and then to straighten and hit his back pad. Jos Buttler was convinced to review but ball-tracking showed it was just going over leg stump and Rossouw survived. Still, it was an impressive opening over, the first scoreless one of the series. Willey bowled three overs up front and returned at the death, where he took two wickets in the final over.Reeza and Rilee reunite The two former Knights team-mates (the franchise that played out of Bloemfontein in South Africa) came together again for the first time in Cardiff, with 73 for the second-wicket, before they put South Africa on track with a 55-run stand in this match. Hendricks and Rossouw complement each other well, with Rossouw the more powerful hitter and Hendricks able to thread through gaps. Their right-left combination and athleticism between the wickets means they’re constantly keeping the opposition attack on their toes. Rossouw was particularly severe on Chris Jordan, who he hit for four fours in the final over of the Powerplay in a demonstration of finesse – the dab through backward point – and luck – the chop past the stumps – and power – the back-to-back drills through the offside. Just as the pair looked fairly immovable, Moeen Ali drew Rossouw forward with a delivery that spun past the outside edge and bowled him. Strangely, that was the only over Moeen bowled. And then Markram makes his pointEngland put the brakes immediately after the powerplay and South Africa went 6.2 overs without a boundary before Markram pulled Jordan through midwicket for four. In the same period, they only faced three dot balls. Markram was left out of the first two matches in favour of Heinrich Klaasen but showed why his presence in the middle-order is so essential to South Africa’s line-up. He shared in an 87-run third-wicket stand with Hendricks, and a 41-run fourth wicket partnership with Miller to push South Africa over 180. Most of Markram’s innings was about strike rotation, with 21 singles and five twos in his innings, reaching fifty from 36 balls.Jason Roy wonders what would have been after another low score•AFP/Getty Images

Maharaj-Nortje one-two does for openersSouth Africa made clever use of their left-arm spinner and fastest bowler in England’s powerplay and both were rewarded with wickets. They shared the new ball for a combination of slow strangle on one end and absolute gas at the other, with Nortje reaching a pace of up to 93mph/149kph before Maharaj switched to Nortje’s end. Buttler tried to make room for himself to cut Maharaj through the off side but sent a thick edge to Lungi Ngidi at backward point. Nortje then came back on, hurled down a 91mph/146kph fireball, Jason Roy swiped across the line, top-edged and de Kock did the rest. Roy averages 12.67 from six home T20Is this summer and last scored a fifty eight innings ago. Nortje went on to pepper Jonny Bairstow with quick ones and touched 94mph/151kph in that over.Stubbs steals the show He did it with the bat in Bristol, and scooped a spectacular catch in Southampton to all but end England’s chances. Tristan Stubbs was at cover when Moeen hit Markram to his left, and seemed to have found a gap. Stubbs moved quickly and then launched himself full-length, stuck out his left hand and snatched the ball from almost behind him to leave England 59 for 4 after 10 overs. They needed 133 runs off the last ten overs and were bowled out in 17 overs.

MANO MENEZES

Petit hints Arsenal could sign "big name" Vlahovic alternative in January

Arsenal have been repeatedly linked with a move for Juventus star Dušan Vlahović ahead of January, but club legend Emmanuel Petit has suggested that a “big name” alternative could be available next month.

Multiple sources share Arsenal interest in signing Vlahovic this week

The Serbia international is enjoying a fine campaign as Thiago Motta’s star player in Turin, already netting double figures across all competitions, and recently helped Juve dispatch Man City with their opening goal in a 2-0 Champions League win earlier this week.

Arteta thinks £192k-per-week star is "perfect" as Arsenal ready January move

The Spaniard is apparently in awe of him.

By
Emilio Galantini

Dec 13, 2024

Vlahovic’s excellent run of form, and Arsenal’s need for a Kai Havertz back-up amid Gabriel Jesus’ barren campaign in front of goal, has led to consistent reports that Mikel Arteta and interim sporting director Jason Ayto are weighing up a winter move for the 24-year-old.

There are claims that Arteta thinks Vlahovic is the “perfect” striker for Arsenal, and other media sources state that they’ve already been in contact with his representatives ahead of the looming January window, which opens in just over a fortnight.

Indeed, it is believed Arsenal have held initial talks with Vlahovic’s camp, with the ex-Fiorentina star also facing an uncertain future as his contract ticks down towards expiry in 2026.

Juve are yet to agree on fresh terms with the forward, but that doesn’t mean they’re prepared to sell him on the cheap either, as reports suggest that Vlahovic could cost nearly £70 million to sign next month.

In any case, the north Londoners are apparently ready to make a move in January (CaughtOffside), so it will be very interesting to see whether this comes to fruition after Arteta hinted that there could be a few “surprises” in store for when the window opens (Friday press conference).

Petit suggests Arsenal could sign Victor Osimhen in January

Another striker who’s been sporadically linked with a move to N5 is Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray.

While the Nigeria superstar is on a temporary switch in Turkey right now, it is believed Osimhen’s Galatasaray deal includes a January break clause, which would allow certain sides, including Arsenal, to strike a mid-season deal for him.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Petit has suggested that Arsenal signing Osimhen could be “possible”, and he’s extremely keen to see the Super Eagles sensation join Arteta’s side.

“I really like Osimhen,” said Petit when asked about forwards Arsenal should target. “He’s actually in Turkey at the moment with Galatasaray. I think he’s on the radar of PSG actually. I also like Leao from AC Milan.

“Who knows? It’s difficult in transfer windows in January to get the big names coming, but with the new format of the Champions League, maybe something could be possible.”

Unsurprisingly, Osimhen is currently lighting up the Turkish Süper Lig with an impressive goal-to-game ratio, and he’s in double figures for goals scored across all competitions as well.

The 25-year-old has maintained his superb form since joining Turkey’s champions, perhaps in an effort to attract prestigious suitors of Arsenal’s ilk.
