Simmons promises to expose truth behind Afghanistan's World Cup mess

Afghanistan coach says he will reveal the dubious part former chief selector Dawlat Ahmadzai had played in the selection of the squad

Nagraj Gollapudi19-Jun-2019Five matches played, five matches lost. Afghanistan are currently bottom of the World Cup table, and just four matches left to play, the wounds inflicted by England’s brutal 150-run win only making things worse. Beyond the playing field, too, things are bad, with what seems like a big fallout between the head coach, Phil Simmons, and former fast bowler Dawlat Ahmadzai, who had been demoted from chairman of selectors to the junior selection panel midway through the World Cup.Normally a man of few words, Simmons posted a message on Twitter on Wednesday reacting to statements from Ahmadzai, who blamed selection policy and team strategies for the poor run in the World Cup. Although he did not provide much detail, Simmons said that once the World Cup was over, he would reveal the “part” Ahmadzai had played in the selection of the squad for the tournament, including the controversial removal of Ashgar Afghan as captain and Gulbadin Naib’s elevation to the post. Before the World Cup, Simmons had told ESPNcricinfo that he was never informed about the captaincy change by the Afghanistan Cricket Board. On Wednesday, he tweeted: “I am in the middle of a World Cup and trying to get our team to perform to the level we expect but at the end of the World Cup I will tell the Afghanistan people about the part that Mr Dawlat Ahmadzai had to play in our preparation and his part in the dismissal of #AsgharAfghan.”

This was in response to Ahmadzai’s statement to the media on June 11, where he said the Afghanistan team management’s selection policy in the recent past has been questionable. He added that Afghanistan would not win a global tournament if they carried on with such a policy.”Our preparation was not good,” Ahmadzai said. “We always went with one fast bowler, all burden was on the shoulders of Rashid [Khan]. But now, Rashid has no such conditions [in the UK]. If we bowl well we can win a game, but if you think we are able to win a tournament, let me assure you we are not in a position now or in coming five years to win the Asia Cup or the World Cup.”Ahmadzai also hinted that, in his opinion, senior players like Afghan and Mohammad Nabi must move on for the betterment of Afghanistan cricket.”We need to work for it from now on. We are going through a transition period,” he said. “We need to change one generation. They played for 18 years, they have done well we should thank them, it’s time some of our players should retire, as age catches up with them, even if our fans are demanding and asking of them to play, cricket needs fitness.”So we need to bring changes. Whoever is coming to replace me as a selector should think from now that in two years’ time, Nabi, Hamid Hasan, Asghar, Shapoor [Zadran], Dawlat Zadran can play [at the highest level]. If they cannot do so, who should replace them? We know this and think about this. Whatever changes I brought is not personal, all these players are my personal friends of the past 17 years. We need a constructive culture. I mean, if we have one team and there is no youth, we cannot survive. Whatever right is happening, it may not sound good on media but you will see good results in time.”Rashid Khan looks on•Getty ImagesAfghan, one of the most senior players in the set-up, was the captain last year when Afghanistan won the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe. However, in April, the ACB announced Naib as the ODI captain along with Rashid Khan as T20I captain and Rahmat Shah as Test captain. Rashid and Nabi, the two most popular players in the team, publicly criticised the move, warning that it had the potential to disrupt the team’s performance at the World Cup.Indeed, Afghanistan have had a turbulent tournament in England so far. Bowling was meant to be the team’s main strength, but all the senior players have struggled, including Rashid, who suffered the ignominy of ending with the second-worst bowling figures – and worst by a spinner – in ODIs during the defeat to England. Nabi might have better bowling figures, but has just managed 37 runs so far with the bat. None of the specialist batsmen have prospered with any consistency, with Afghanistan players registering just three half-centuries.Afghanistan have also had to deal with the controversy surrounding Mohammad Shahzad, who was sent home by the ACB for being unfit, only for Shahzad to hit back saying that was not true. Then, the ACB removed Ahmadzai from the senior selection committee and named him as head of the junior selection panel. In his place, Andy Moles, who was Afghanistan’s coach at the 2015 World Cup, was appointed to the senior selection panel along with Mujahid Zadran, who has worked as a coach with Afghanistan A.Incidentally, Simmons had told ESPNcricinfo he would be stepping down after the World Cup to pursue other opportunities. Azizullah Fazli, the ACB chairman, told on June 4 that Simmons’ resignation had been accepted by the board, which wanted the head coach to be open to travel and live in Afghanistan.”Our head coach (Simmons) officially emailed me saying that on July 15 his contract is expiring,” Fazli said. “We replied thanking him for his work with us, but we are not extending the contract. Our reason is that we need a coach who can train our team inside Afghanistan.”Before he joined Afghanistan, Simmons is understood to have put a condition in his contract that he would not be forced to travel to Afghanistan where international cricket has never been played due to the security situation in the country.

Abu Jayed, Liton Das, Tamim Iqbal keep Ireland winless

Paul Stirling’s century in vain as Ireland’s bowlers struggle against superior batting line-up

The Report by Mohammad Isam15-May-2019
Seamer Abu Jayed’s first five-wicket haul in only his second ODI coupled with fifties from Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh to a six-wicket win and kept Ireland winless in the tri-series. However, Bangladesh will be sweating over Shakib’s fitness after the allrounder had retired hurt during the chase with a suspected side strain.Earlier, Ireland opener Paul Stirling put on a show, making 130 off 141 balls, and was well supported by his captain William Porterfield, who hit his first ODI fifty in more than a year, but their efforts went in vain as Bangladesh aced their chase.Abu Jayed bowls•AFPTamim set the tone with his second fifty in three matches this series, helping Bangladesh to another rapid start. He put on 117 for the first wicket with Liton and piled the pressure on Ireland with a flurry of boundaries. Tamim could have been dismissed on 22 had Gary Wilson hung onto a catch behind the stumps, but he went onto add 35 to his tally.Liton complemented Tamim well and was particularly strong square of the wicket, keeping Bangladesh ticking in the chase. Both the openers were bowled, but Shakib and Mushfiqur then took over, adding 64 runs together in 10 overs. During the process, Mushfiqur became the fifth wicketkeeper to reach 5000 ODI runs after Adam Gilchrist, Andy Flower, Kumar Sangakkara and MS Dhoni. The stand, however, ended when Mushfiqur’s leg-side tickle was superbly intercepted by a diving Wilson.Shakib suffered a suspected side strain while trying to pull Josh Little in the 35th over, and consequently retired hurt. Mahmudullah, though, got them home, with his unbeaten 35 off 29 balls.Such an emphatic Bangladesh victory had looked less likely when Stirling dominated the visitors in the first innings. Stirling got going with a crunch through the covers off Jayed and proceeded to add 174 with Porterfield – the highest third-wicket stand for Ireland in ODI cricket. In all, Stirling struck eight fours and four sixes in his 130.Porterfield made 94 off 106 balls, including seven fours and two sixes, but got out to Jayed just as he tried to accelerate. He had been particularly severe on Mashrafe Mortaza, taking the veteran seamer for 31 off 25 balls. Shakib wasn’t spared either. Porterfield also slammed five fours off Shakib, who finished with 0 for 65 in his nine overs, including a 23-run last over.Jayed also took the prized scalp of Stirling, helping Bangladesh keep Ireland to under 300. Porterfield was caught at the deep extra-cover boundary while Stirling gave deep midwicket a simple catch. Ireland’s slide either side of the Stirling-Porterfield stand and some wayward bowling meant they ended the series without a single win.

Spurs can take Son to a brand new level by signing £25m "striker’s dream"

Tottenham are certainly entertaining, we'll give them that. Whether it was with Antonio Conte in the dugout or with Ange Postecoglou leading proceedings, drama has followed.

Only last season did we see Conte launch a scathing attack on the club, one that shortly saw him sacked.

Postecoglou didn't arrive until the summer but he has already rejuvenated this football club despite a lack of European football and no Harry Kane.

That hasn't deterred the relaxed Aussie who has won three Manager of the Month awards already and engineered an unbeaten start until they took on Chelsea. Since then, Spurs have gone four games without winning.

One of those encounters, however, was an enthralling 3-3 draw with Manchester City that proved the north Londoners certainly know how to attack against the best teams. Therefore, strengthening their offensive options in January is a scary thought for the rest of the Premier League.

Tottenham's January transfer plans

Postecoglou's squad has been decimated with injuries of late with the likes of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur and Manor Solomon all on the treatment table.

That has clearly hit the Lilywhites hard and as such, the January window is an ideal time to bolster their depth.

They could do so by turning to a man the Spurs boss knows well, Jota. The Portuguese was brought to Celtic by Postecoglou and after a troubled opening six months in Saudi Arabia – where he wasn't even registered in the Al-Ittihad squad following a £25m switch – could be on the move again.

Celtic's former forward Jota.

Notable Spurs reporter Alasdair Gold made fresh claims last week on a prospective deal, writing for Football.London: "With his [Jota's] situation still unclear in Saudi Arabia, Spurs will likely explore the possibility of a loan move at least for the attacker, who is represented by Jorge Mendes' Gestifute agency."

Why Tottenham need to sign Jota in January

Put simply, Spurs' depth isn't the best. Therefore, any options, specifically one as effervescent as Jota would be welcomed hugely at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this winter.

Jota has a fabulous record under Postecoglou already and would be perfectly suited to Ange-ball, having racked up 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 games under the Australian's wing.

Former Celtic stars Josip Juranovic and Jota.

Indeed, his form in Scotland was rather remarkable, scoring 15 goals and supplying 12 assists last season alone across all competitions.

You may well mutter under your breath; 'well this is only Scottish football'. but some of the finest names in world football have adapted superbly well after plying their trade north of the border. Does Virgil van Dijk ring any bells?

Crucially, Jota is still in the maiden phases of his career too. He is only 24 and is set to just get better and better as time goes on.

Such numbers could well be perfect for Tottenham, specifically skipper Heung-min Son who is looking for his next Kane-like figure to take him to the next level.

Jota is by no means cut from the same cloth as Spurs' all-time leading scorer but he does boast immense creativity, a skill set that would be hugely advantageous to Son.

Spurs have a "talented" U21 striker who's on par with Son this season

Spurs could have a bright talent on their hands, this young attacker matching Son’s goal total for the season already…

ByKelan Sarson Nov 5, 2023

Speaking of the Al-Ittihad forward's qualities while he was in Scotland, BBC pundit and ex-player Marvin Bartley stated: "He’s a striker’s dream, isn’t he? If you go in the right areas, he’ll find you. His head is up all the time. He can play left, he can play right, he’s pro-active, he’s constantly on the move. He’s got that belief he can go past anyone.”

The words 'striker's dream' should already have Son salivating at the mouth and when you assess some of the Portuguese's other numbers, it becomes clear why.

dejan-kulusevski-heung-min-son-tottenham-opinion

Compared to positionally similar players in the Champions League last season, Jota ranked in the top 6% of wingers for shot-creating actions with six every 90 minutes. Furthermore, he sat inside the top 14% for progressive carries (5.05 per 90) and the best 6% for successful take-ons (3.47 per 90).

What that highlights is that the former Celtic man is incredibly lively and can beat his man with great ease. Such qualities would be perfect for Son who would no doubt realise a greater sense of creativity should Postecoglou get his man in January.

Spurs hold "almost weekly" talks over signing defender likened to Hummels

Tottenham have apparently held "almost weekly meetings" in London over signing a "dominant" 6 foot 3 defender likened to Dortmund star Mats Hummels.

Spurs prioritise new defender signing

Following a serious injury to star summer recruit Micky van de Ven, it is believed Spurs have sought to prioritise the January signing of a left-footed defensive alternative. While van de Ven will be back from his hamstring injury by the start of 2024, the Dutchman's absence has really brought attention to manager Ange Postecoglou's lack of star alternatives.

Spurs have been forced to play the previously out-of-favour Eric Dier in place of van de Ven recently, and it's clear Postecoglou isn't his biggest fan, as reports suggest the Englishman could leave Tottenham very soon. The Lilywhites have been linked with a plethora of alternatives to van de Ven in recent weeks, with Tottenham targeting Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth among many others.

Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

Former Spurs defender Alan Hutton, speaking to Football Insider last week, backed the club to make a "top signing" in the new year while insisting they need defensive reinforcements.

“It’ll be very interesting to see who they bring in, and I think it will happen, a top signing, for sure," said the pundit.

"They do need defensive reinforcements as we’ve seen after a number of injuries. They look thin at the back so it’s something they will look at. Kelly’s got lots of experience in the Premier League.

“He’s a good size, good with his feet and ticks a lot of boxes. He’s somebody they’ll have an eye on but I’m sure there’ll be lots of players that are working hard in the background to see if they can make the squad better.”

Their chase for a new defender looks certain to be one to watch in the coming weeks, with some interesting news coming to light on another transfer target this week.

Spurs hold "almost weekly" Dragusin meetings

Now, it's been claimed that Spurs have held "almost weekly meetings" in London over signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin. The Romania international has started all 12 of Genoa's league games this season and stands out as a star centre-back for them, which is really enticing Spurs.

Genoa defender Radu Dragusin.

That is according to the player's own agent, Florin Manea, who says that he regularly speaks to Tottenham about Dragusin.

“The people from Genoa know (that he will soon leave),” Manea explained to Fanatik.

“I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams. We are getting closer. I spoke with Newcastle, with Arsenal, with Tottenham. I also have the messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask.

“I want to say that, 100 per cent by next summer, Radu will play for a very strong club. One in the top 10 in the world. He wants to be in the Premier League, but I know that Milan like him a lot. I talked to the people there.”

Indirect set piece threat

Clears the ball out of defence often

Does not dive into tackles

The 21-year-old's reputation on the continent is growing and growing, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig calling him a "dominant" defender and likening him to veteran centre-back star Hummels.

Hoping to prove to the world we're strong enough to win World T20 – Tryon

South Africa women have reached two semi-finals in world tournaments in the last four years, and allrounder Chloe Tryon believes they are good enough to go a step further and become the first South African cricket team to claim a world title when they go to the Caribbean for the Women’s World T20 in November.”We know that we are good enough to win the tournament and we are hoping to prove to the world that we are that strong,” Tryon said. “We want to go there and win the competition. But we are not going to get carried away – we’ll take it one game at a time.”South Africa just got home after a promising tour of the West Indies, in which they shared the one-day series 1-1 and fought back from 2-0 down to hold the reigning world T20 champions to a 2-2 draw in the T20s. Tryon captained South Africa in the T20s, after Dane van Niekerk rolled her ankle, and reckoned the experience had been a valuable one in the lead-up to the World T20.”We learnt a lot on our trip now, which is going to be important come the World Cup,” she said. “There is obviously a lot we need to work on, but we have a good idea of what we need to do at the competition in order to do well, having recently experienced the conditions.”I felt that in the ODIs we did lose it a bit,” she admitted. “We were doing a lot of the basics wrong. Yes, it is a bit slow here, but we know we should be better. But, overall, I think we learnt a lot from being here. The team has grown a lot from the ODIs and coming back from 2-0 down to level the series, so I’m really excited to go home, work on those things and come back ready for the World Cup.”Looking back at the ODIs, we were unlucky with the one game that got rained out. I felt we were in a position where we could win that game, and unfortunately, conditions are something you cannot control. It was a bit of a challenge, but the way we went about it was really good. It’s just a few things to work on, but it’s nice to go home with the series shared.”Her rapid 31 in the final T20 tipped that match decisively in South Africa’s favour, but Tryon’s returns from the series were middling, and she said she would spend the two weeks until South Africa’s departure for the World T20 honing her role as the team’s finisher.”I still feel that I can finish off games more,” she said. “I do want to be the match-winner for the team. Obviously, there’s still a lot to work on. I still feel that I lose a bit of concentration now and then, but I need to be more focussed if I want to be there for the team at the crucial stages in the end.Apart from acclimatising the team to conditions they are hoping to prosper in next month, the trip to the Caribbean also allowed the coach and selectors a good look at some of South Africa’s rookies. Three of them – Tumi Sekhukhune, Robyn Searle and Saarah Smith – could make their World Cup debuts as a result.”I felt they did really well,” Tryon said of the new players. “I’m very impressed with Tumi, Saarah stood up when we needed her the most. Robyn and Faye [Tunnicliffe] did really well in the last game, so it’s nice that these girls got some opportunity in the middle. I hope they can now take it back home and know what it means to be here and the level we play at.”

India rest Virat Kohli for Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma to lead; uncapped Khaleel Ahmed called up

India have rested their captain Virat Kohli from the Asia Cup, which will be held in the UAE from September 15 to 28. Rohit Sharma will lead the side in his absence, with Shikhar Dhawan named his deputy.India are currently playing a five-Test series in England, which ends on September 11, four days before the start of the Asia Cup. The Test team will be back in action on October 4 – less than a week after the Asia Cup final – when they begin their first Test against West Indies in Rajkot. Given the tightly packed schedule, and the tour of Australia that will follow the series against West Indies, the selectors have chosen to rest Kohli.”Considering the workload we’ve given him rest,” MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, said. “He has been playing continuously, yes he’s on the road since IPL, that’s looking at workload. I’ve been [to England] for the third Test match, we sat for a discussion regarding workload management, so we need preserve some players who are playing all three formats. Looking at that workload issue we have started with Virat and rested him. Other all-format players will also be rested in due course.”The squad is otherwise at full strength, with the selectors not opting to rest Dhawan, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya and Bumrah, who are all involved in the Test series in England.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

There is one new face in the squad in Khaleel Ahmed, the left-arm seamer from Rajasthan. The 20-year-old has only played two first-class matches, but has more experience in List A and T20 cricket, having played a combined 29 games across the two shorter formats. He was part of the India A limited-overs squad that toured England in June-July, and also played for India A in the recently concluded 50-overs quadrangular series in Bengaluru.Khaleel has taken 15 wickets in his last nine limited-overs matches for India A, and has not gone wicketless in any of these matches. He had been on the selectors’ radar for a while, since they were looking for a left-arm option, and his returns for India A have encouraged them to call him up to the senior side.Prasad said the selectors had identified most of the squad to take to next year’s World Cup in England, apart from two or three slots, of which one was in the pace-bowling group.”Two to three slots we are yet to finalise, so for those slots we are trying and we’ll look at these 24 matches [in the lead-up to the World Cup]. You’ll come to know the slots more specifically as we go ahead … Among those, one of those seamers’ slots is open. We are looking at a left-arm option in Khaleel.”The middle-order trio of Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav, are back after missing India’s last ODI series in England, as well as for Jasprit Bumrah, who sat out that series to recover from a thumb injury. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has just returned to action after recovering from a back issue, is also part of the squad.Of those who were part of the ODI squad in England, batsmen Shreyas Iyer and Suresh Raina and fast bowlers Siddarth Kaul and Umesh Yadav have misssed out on selection.Pandey has forced his way back into the ODI squad with his blistering form in the A team quadrangular series, in which he made 306 runs in four innings without being dismissed. Rayudu was originally in the ODI squad for the England tour, but was left out after failing the yo-yo fitness test. He has since cleared the test, and played in the quadrangular series for India A. Jadhav suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of the IPL season and was ruled out of the rest of the tournament and the England tour. He too returned to action during the quadrangular series. One player who has been in red-hot form across formats in domestic cricket and for India A is the opener Mayank Agarwal. Prithvi Shaw pipped him to a slot in the Test squad when the selectors left out M Vijay for the fourth and fifth Tests in England. Now, after scoring four hundreds in his last nine List A matches, an ODI spot has eluded him too. Prasad said he was “just a step away”.”Mayank has been fantastic and performing consistently for 10-12 months, he’s just a step away, and I’m sure in due course of time he’ll get his recognition. He did well in all three formats in domestic cricket and whatever opportunity he’s got for India A. We’ll definitely look at him when we rest senior cricketers.”

Merseyside Derby: The 10 best Liverpool vs Everton clashes

The Merseyside derby is one of the biggest games in the English football calendar and has been for well over a century now. While it doesn't quite have the same gravitas as it did in the 1980s when Liverpool and Everton were the top two sides in the country, it remains one of the absolute best derbies around.

In fact, it's one of only two 'proper' derbies to feature in every single Premier League season, along with the north London derby. There's a lot of history just in the Premier League era, then.

So Football FanCast has delved into that history and looked at the best Merseyside derbies since the start of the Premier League. Here's what we've gone for.

10 Liverpool 1-1 Everton – September 2014

Okay, so there's going to be a bit of a theme at times. Over the last 30-odd years, Liverpool and Everton games haven't necessarily been all-out classics. There have been spells where the Reds were by far the dominant side, routinely winning plenty of games 3-1.

And there have also been a lot of defensive games. That's largely because of the gulf between the two teams, or the fact that both played defensive football from about 1999 through 2011.

Thus some of these games are more known for a single moment, rather than the game being an all-out classic. This is one of those as Phil Jagielka rescued a point at Anfield not just with a last-minute equaliser but with one of the greatest strikes the fixture has ever seen.

Everton pushed and pushed, working the ball into the box late on. Dejan Lovren headed it clear but Jagielka, coming onto the ball roughly 25-yards out, smashed it first time into the top corner, in off the bar. Stunning.

9 Everton 2-1 Liverpool – December 1992

This was the very first Merseyside derby under the Premier League banner and a notable one, too. The two teams were, at this point, two of the very biggest in English football. Liverpool had more titles than anyone – far more, in fact – while only Arsenal bumped Everton into having the third-most.

Basically, everyone expected the two Merseyside teams to compete for the title in the 90s. If you'd told anyone at the time that 31 years later, they'd have one title between them, you'd have been laughed at – but here we are.

But anyway, the first derby. Mark Wright put Liverpool ahead at Goodison Park on 62 minutes – but Everton found an equaliser within a minute through Mo Johnston.

And the Toffees would go on to find a winner, too, as former Liverpool great Peter Beardsley scored six minutes from time to win the game. First blood to Everton, then.

8 Liverpool 3-0 Everton – March 2012

2010/11 was a bizarre season for Liverpool. It started with owners Tom Hicks and George Gillette being ousted by administrators as the Reds' finances sunk. Then Roy Hodgson replaced Rafa Benitez and the club's stock in the Premier League fell even further than those finances.

New owners, now known as FSG, entered in October and Kenny Dalglish returned as managed in January. Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll arrived soon after – with Fernando Torres departing. All change, then, as the Reds did turn things around.

Everton, in contrast, were simply stable. David Moyes was now into a decade as boss – but still without a win at Anfield. He wasn't to get it here, however, as Steven Gerrard made some history.

He scored all three in the win – the first hat-trick in the Merseyside derby since Ian Rush in 1982. It was the first at Anfield since 1935. All made more notable by it being the face of Liverpool Football Club doing it.

7 Liverpool 0-2 Everton – February 2021

Well, this was historic. Everton went into this one having not won a match at Anfield since 1999. In fact, they hadn't beaten Liverpool full-stop since 2010.

23 attempts had come and gone without a win, which is truly extraordinary for any Premier League side. However, they came up against a bizarre Liverpool side in 2021. Injuries sustained to Virgil van Dijk (in the reverse fixture), Joe Gomez and Joel Matip crippled the Reds' defence and Jurgen Klopp struggled to find anything that worked.

Carlo Ancelotti, who boasts a great record against the German anyway, was the right man to capitalise on Liverpool's difficulties. He set his side out at Anfield to stifle the hosts and push consistently on the break.

Richarlison has Everton 1-0 up within three minutes and a late penalty sealed a historic win – but with one catch. This was in the 'pandemic season', meaning there wasn't actually a crowd at Anfield that day. While the Toffees do now have a win at Liverpool's ground in the 21st century, it is debatable whether it's quite the same. One to argue about.

6 Liverpool 1-0 Everton – December 2018

This is firmly another one of those games that wasn't particularly good but has one standout moment that everyone watching will forever remember.

Everton had a plan – defend with all they have and leave with a point. They were incredibly close to doing just that against a Liverpool team that would win the Champions League that season.

Deep into stoppage time, Liverpool had a deep freekick and one last chance to break the Everton backline. They failed. The ball was cleared to the edge of the box and Virgil van Dijk attempted an ill-advised volley at goal that flew harmlessly into the air and over the bar.

Only, Jordan Pickford was clearly caught in two minds. The ball was dropping just past the crossbar but the Everton goalkeeper tried to claim it anyway, presumably to try and counter-attack. All he did, however, was push the ball back into play. It bounced on the crossbar, fell in front of goal and the waiting Divock Origi scored a dramatic winner. Scenes.

5 Everton 1-2 Liverpool – October 2007

What a crazy game this was. This era was one where Everton fancied themselves against Liverpool, having won convincingly at home the season before. Liverpool got the better of them, though, through two penalties – both of which resulted in red cards.

Everton went into the break 1-0 up after Sami Hyypia scored an own goal. The second half was pure chaos, however, as Dirk Kuyt scored from the spot as Tony Hibbert saw red on 54 minutes.

Liverpool pushed and pushed against 10 men to find a winner. With 90 minutes on the clock, Lucas Leiva sent the ball towards goal only for Everton captain Phil Neville to save it – with his hands. Off he went, then, as Kuyt stepped up to fire home the winner with his second penalty.

That's not the entire story, though. Kuyt probably should have been sent off himself on 64 minutes for what was a horrendous challenge – he lept fully into the air at about waist height. While he avoided any serious contact with Neville, it was about as reckless as it gets. The Dutchman only saw yellow, though, and went on to score the winner.

4 Everton 3-0 Liverpool – September 2006

The two teams were as evenly matched as they had been for 15 years going into this. Everton were actually 3rd in the early Premier League table, with the Reds – who had won the Champions League and FA Cup over the last two years – down in 9th.

Though, if you hadn't known, you wouldn't have thought the two teams were particularly close coming out of it. Everton blew Liverpool away, registering a historic win.

Tim Cahill opened the scoring, with and Andy Johnson brace sealing it – with a little help from a horrendous Pepe Reina performance in goal for the Reds. The 3-0 win remains not only Everton's biggest win over Liverpool in the Premier League era but their biggest since 1964.

3 Liverpool 0-1 Everton – September 1999

So this is, in fact, the last time Everton won in front of an Anfield crowd. It was a far more notable game than the scoreline suggests, too.

Kevin Campbell got the goalscoring out of the way early on – his fourth-minute strike was enough to seal this one. But the drama didn't stop there.

On 74 minutes, Everton's Francis Jeffers and Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld got into a scuffle. It was one that saw both players sent off, with this one being played 10 vs 10 for the next 15 minutes. However, the Reds had made all three substitutions, meaning defender Steve Staunton had to go in goal.

It wouldn't finish that way. Young Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard – a second-half substitute – took out his frustration with a shocking 'tackle' in stoppage time. That earned him a red card, too, to seal an awful day for his side and a fantastic one for Everton.

2 Everton 3-3 Liverpool – November 2013

An absolute classic of a game between two teams looking towards the top of the Premier League. Everton were in 5th going into this, with Liverpool above them in 3rd.

But both were managed by two of the up-and-coming managers in the Premier League. Roberto Martinez and Brendan Rodgers each wanted to instill attacking, possession-based football on their sides. This match showed off just how exciting it could be.

Liverpool took an early lead as Philippe Coutinho found the net as he nudged the ball home at close range after a set-piece. Three minutes later, Kevin Mirallas did the exact same thing to equalise for Everton.

The Reds went into half-time in front, though, after Luis Suarez scored an outrageous freekick. This season saw the Uruguayan dominate the league – here was a taste.

The second half was Romelu Lukaku's time to shine. He equalised on 72 minutes and then appeared to find a winner with just six minutes to play. But Liverpool hit back as Daniel Sturridge flicked an inventive header into the far corner on 89 minutes.

A whirlwind game and arguably the best out-and-out match between the two in the Premier League.

1 Everton 2-3 Liverpool – April 2001

This game had 12 yellow cards – one of which became red – a penalty and a last-minute free-kick winner. Peak.

Emile Heskey put Liverpool ahead after only five minutes at Goodison. Right before half-time, though, Duncan Ferguson was able to equalise for the hosts. Yellow card count at this stage: 3.

The second half was action-packed, then. Markus Babbel fired home for 2-1 just ahead of the hour mark and Liverpool were in a commanding position. But Igor Biscan, who received a first-half yellow, earned himself a second one on 77 minutes. Suddenly, the game was there for Everton.

And they found an equaliser from the penalty spot. David Unsworth sent the ball into the net and Everton had the final six minutes to push for a winner. Only, they weren't the ones to find it.

Liverpool won a free-kick in stoppage time that was simply not within shooting range. That convinced Paul Gerrard in the Everton goal to step out a bit for Gary McAllister's delivery – only, the Scot spotted that. McAllister instead caught the goalkeeper out, finding the net and a winner to send Liverpool fans delirious.

Everton, though, can rightly point to the fact that McAllister's eventual freekick was roughly 10 yards ahead of where the foul had happened. So you can add controversy to this one, too.

Skipper Wakely has a chance to stop the rot

Northants are bottom, without a win in four games, but Alex Wakely’s unbeaten half-century has given them a decent chance of improved fortunes

ScorecardAlex Wakely’s first half-century of the season in the Specsavers County Championship put bottom-of-the-table Northamptonshire on top against Leicestershire at Wantage Road, as they took a lead of 152. by the close of the second day with seven second-innings wickets remaining.Winless after four games, unable to deliver what many predicted would be a promotion-chasing campaign, Northants are reasonably well placed to set up a victory platform on the third day. With batting not easy on a pitch that yielded 20 wickets in four-and-a-half sessions, Wakely settled well and struck seven fours and a six in reaching the first fifty of the game in 81 balls. He skipped down the wicket to swing Callum Parkinson’s left-arm spin into the Wilson Stand for six before slapping four more through midwicket and twice cutting the same bowler for boundaries.Wakely shared stands of 51 with Ricardo Vasconcelos for the third wicket and an unbroken alliance of 44 with Adam Rossington that took Northants to the close in a strong position.Until the evening session, the game had been a nip-and-tuck affair with Leicestershire nudging into a 13-run first-innings lead after making 217.They resumed 64 for 3 and lost four wickets in the morning session to slip to 146 for 7. Nightwatchman Gavin Griffiths went to the 11th ball of the morning, chipping Rory Kleinveldt to midwicket without adding to his overnight 1. Colin Ackermann and Neil Dexter then settled into a stand of 45 for the fifth wicket before Ben Cotton struck at midday with a ball that moved away from Ackermann’s drive to take out middle and off stumps.Lewis Hill only made 7 before being caught at short-leg pushing forward to Rob Keogh’s offspin and when Dexter feathered an edge behind off Ben Sanderson, Leicestershire were behind in the game. But a response was provided by Zak Chappell who followed up his first-innings 6 for 44 with 40 with the bat to raise a batting point for the visitors and bring Leicestershire on terms.A limping Rob Newton saw Northants make a solid start to their second-innings. Newton picked up what looked like an injury to his right knee taking a single. He needed a runner but battled through to 30 before being bowled by Mohammad Abbas after Ben Duckett had dragged Ben Raine into his leg stump for 17.When Vasconcelos fell for 37, hooking at Raine and getting a top-edge into his helmet that looped to short-square leg, Leicestershire hoped for a strong end to the day but Wakely and Rossington ensured Northants took the initiative into the third day.
