Australians at the PSL: Usman Khawaja, Tim David and James Faulkner leave a mark

For some it was their first experience of an overseas T20 league

Andrew McGlashan25-Jun-2021Fawad Ahmed (Islamabad United)Ahmed returned to the tournament despite being one of the players to contract Covid-19 during the first phase. He was steady in three of his four outings on the resumption but took some hammer in the high-scoring contest against Zalmi when his four overs cost 51. Despite taking 2 for 25 in the last group match he did not play either of the finals during with United missed out the final with the team wanting to rebalance their attack.Tim David (Lahore Qalandars)
Yes, David is Singaporean but he is eligible for Australia and plays for Hobart Hurricanes so is on this list. He made his mark in the middle order for the Qalandars, playing key roles in two victories which relaunched their tournament before they faded to such an extent they missed the finals. His 64 off 36 balls – which included five sixes – against Zalmi was the standout innings as he and Dunk rescued the innings from 25 for 4 in the eighth over. A stuttering top order meant he often had to perform repair acts and his 34 off 14 balls against Karachi Kings got the Qalanders’ chasing within touching distance.Ben Dunk (Lahore Qalandars)
The T20 freelancer was another of those to return to the competition having been involved earlier in the year before it was postponed. He only managed one substantial innings on the resumption with 48 off 33 balls against Zalmi in what proved a match-winning stand with David. He ended the competition with four single-figure scores as the Qalanders missed out on the knockouts due to net run-rate.Related

James Faulkner (Lahore Qalandars)
Faulkner had a significant impact with the ball claiming three three-wicket hauls in his first four matches – his 3 for 19 against United were his best figures in T20 since he had the same return against Sri Lanka in 2016. And despite playing just six matches, his overall of 13 wickets makes it Faulkner’s joint-fifth best T20 league campaign. With the bat he chipped in: his 22 off 7 balls against Zalmi was key in making a winning total (the final margin was 10 runs) while the 33 off 18 he made against the Kings – in a rapid stand with David – fell just short of hauling a chase out of the fire.Usman Khawaja (Islamabad United)
Khawaja, who had hoped to be able to play in Pakistan for the first time before the tournament was moved to Abu Dhabi, certainly made an impact at the top of the order with the joint-highest score of the tournament and just the second century when he hammered an unbeaten 105 off 56 balls against Zalmi. Add to that a 70 off 41 balls against Sultans and he did all he could to keep his name in conversations with the selectors back home.Jake Weatherald (Quetta Gladiators)
The Adelaide Strikers batter was consistent without quite producing a major innings. He reached double figures in all five innings and twice made 40s although the first of those came in a match where United chased the target of 134 in 10 overs. However, his 48 off 41 balls against the Qalandars was the highest score of the match where the Gladiators won by 18 runs.Jonathan Wells (Peshawar Zalmi)
Known for his finishing skills in the BBL, Wells had an immediate impact on debut for Zalmi when he made an unbeaten 55 to guide them into the final – a fair effort considering it was his first professional innings since the end of January. However, the final did not go as well as he made 6 off 13 balls before being run out in the face of a huge chase.Jack Wildermuth (Quetta Gladiators)
A tough couple of outings for the Queensland and Brisbane Heat allrounder which including going for 53 off three overs against the KingsCallum Ferguson was part of the Lahore Qalandars squad but did not play

Doping in La Liga? Spanish agency under scrutiny after failing to investigate 11 positive tests in recent years

Spain’s anti-doping agency, CELAD, is in the spotlight after it emerged that 11 positive tests have not been investigated in recent years.

CELAD failed to open an investigation into 11 positive tests between the years of 2017 and 2021, according to Relevo. The annual reports of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have revealed just one of 12 positive cases was investigated and that resulted in a "symbolic" punishment to Raul de Tomas of a one-month ban and a fine of just €3,000 (£247,000).

CELAD opted to archive cases after initial proceedings had been opened rather than proceed with an investigation after accepting "medical justification" explanations from the players involved. In 2022, Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez was banned for two years after a positive result for terbutaline. The midfielder, who actually played for Argentina at World Cup 2022 during the investigation, claimed the banned substance came from his son’s cough medicine and was handed a two-year suspension in 2023.

The report also reveals that CELAD archived the case of Almeria midfielder Yan Eteki after he tested positive for betamethasone. The drug requires a special permit for use, which the club did not have, but CELAD opted not to investigate.

Leeds working to sign left-back with Rutter and Summerville replacements

Leeds United are set to be busy in the final days of the transfer window as they target a whole host of new faces before the August 30th deadline, and now an update on their plans has emerged.

Farke working with a thin Leeds squad

After two games of the Championship season, few would have predicted Daniel Farke's side to be without a win, but after two draws they find themselves down in 16th and four points off the very early pace set by Burnley, Sunderland and Watford.

They also exited the Carabao Cup in the first round, falling to a tame 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in front of a restless Elland Road that threatens to turn sour if results don't pick up soon.

It comes off the back of a difficult summer, which has seen them lose over 10 players and take in more than £100m from sales, only to sign four as replacements.

That includes a trio of stars from last season in the shape of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray, all of whom have been snapped up by Premier League clubs.

It means that as things stand, Leeds have a squad of just 19 players for Farke to choose from. Those 19 consist of three centre-backs to cover two positions, one recognised right back, three midfielders to cover two positions, one attacking midfielder and no recognised left-winger, while there are question marks over several members of the squad.

£3m+ Leeds target now personally pushing to join Farke before the deadline

He would fill an area of need for Daniel Farke’s side.

ByBen Browning Aug 19, 2024

Farke outlined that he wanted at least four new faces following their draw with West Brom on Saturday. "We would need cover at full-back, in midfield and two offensive positions. Cannot guarantee we will get all of these, but four is roughly what I would like to see."

Now, one report has provided further insight into the 49ers Enterprises' plans for the final days of the window.

Three positions targeted for Leeds United

That comes courtesy of journalist Pete O'Rourke, who claims that Leeds are eyeing up three positions as a matter of urgency.

Writing for Football Insider, he revealed that a left-back is a priority at the club, with backup to Junior Firpo thin on the ground.

Farke is "prioritising a new signing on the left side of his defence", it is claimed, with the Leeds boss looking for a long-term replacement for Firpo, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Additionally, they are "also prioritising deals for a striker and winger to replace the output of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter," who contributed a combined 49 goals and assists last season.

That return will be hard for any new signings to match, but the Yorkshire side have been linked with moves for Sunderland's Jack Clarke and more recently Burnley forward Manuel Benson as they look to try and achieve it.

It will be a crucial few days for Leeds though, with their current squad depth arguably unlikely to be able to even challenge for the play-offs over the course of the season, let alone the automatic promotion spots that their fans expect to be battling for.

Arda Guler and Victor Osimhen to Man Utd? Ruben Amorim urged to sign 'clever, big game' players as ex-Red Devils striker tells new boss the three things he must do after arriving at Old Trafford

Former Manchester United star Louis Saha has named two players Ruben Amorim should sign and also revealed three things he must do at Old Trafford.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United announced Amorim as their choice to take over as the Red Devils head coach after sacking Erik ten Hag as the club struggled for form and results. The former Sporting boss has now arrived at Carrington this week during the international break, and Saha, a former striker at United, has laid down advice for the Portuguese coach as he looks to succeed at Old Trafford. Saha also suggested that Amorim should look towards signing Real Madrid's Arda Guler and Galatasaray loanee Victor Osimhen.

    WHAT SAHA SAID

Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds, Saha said: "Manchester United have lots they could offer Arda Guler, including more playing time than he gets at Real Madrid currently. United need that type of playmaker who plays with freedom and it’s very difficult for young players to get that at Real Madrid, especially in midfield. He could thrive at United with that opportunity. He needs to play to reach his potential and maybe a loan would suit him after he was so impressive at Euro 2024, he is a very clever player. United need someone who can provide chances to players like Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund, they need a player who is capable of playing that final pass and that could be him."

He also suggested that United should look towards signing Osimhen instead of Viktor Gyokeres, he added: "If you look at the stats, Man Utd should go after Victor Osimhen over Viktor Gyokeres, it’s as simple as that. He’s been scoring goals for four years at Napoli and has done exactly the same since joining Galatasaray, scoring goals for fun. He is a huge character and has the confidence to be a success everywhere he goes. I think there is a bit more of a guarantee behind him given the amount of time he has been successful. He is a big game player and he loves the game, he doesn’t care how his goals go in, he just wants to score and that’s what he does. He is very focused and he reminds me of Erling Haaland in that sense. I think he could be what Man Utd need."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saha went on to offer advice to Amorim on three things he must do after taking over: "Ruben Amorim needs to bring consistency to Man Utd, give his players confidence in themselves as well as freedom to perform. To win titles they need to win games but show they can do so on a consistent basis, he needs to find the right balance between discipline and freedom to allow his players to be at their best.

"He needs to recreate what he has done with Viktor Gyokeres, a player who was playing in the Championship after failing to break through in the Premier League and giving him the confidence that he has today. The Portuguese league isn’t the same as the Premier League but it’s a similar challenge to get players believing in themselves and playing to the best of their abilities.

"The current players at Man Utd sometimes let their ego get in the way of their performances and they need to reconnect with the fans, look at Liverpool’s players and how they have performed straight away under Arne Slot. Look at the desire of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, that is the commitment we want to see from Marcus Rashford and his team-mates."

Contact made: Arsenal could land dream White rival in "sensational" star

Arsenal were a tour de force in the Premier League last season, and while they couldn't quite dethrone Manchester City, they were comfortably the second-best team in the competition.

From Kai Havertz at the top of the pitch to David Raya in between the sticks, Mikel Arteta's squad was full of stars with a genuine claim to being the player of the season, and one who really kicked on was Ben White.

The Englishman was an ever-present in the team and won the Player of the Month Award in March, but based on recent reports, he could be in for a fight next season, as the latest name touted for a move to the Emirates is an incredibly impressive defender.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from journalist Gerard Romero (via Caught Offside), Arsenal are interested in Barcelona star Jules Kounde and have been in contact with the Blaugrana about the player.

Jules Kounde

The bad news for the Gunners is that the Catalans do not want to sell the talented defender lest they are made a seriously significant offer.

However, it is still early in the transfer window and with the North Londoners clearly keen on the Frenchman, this might be a transfer worth working on, even if it could impact White's place in the team.

How Kounde compares to White

Now, like White, Kounde is a versatile defender who can play as either a centre-back or a right-back, but with William Saliba and Gabriel firmly established at the heart of the Gunners' best-in-class back four, he'd likely come in as competition on the right.

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde.

So, how does he compare to the Englishman?

Well, from a pure output perspective, the Arsenal man comes out ahead. In his 51 appearances last season, he scored four goals and provided five assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 5.66 matches, which for a right-back isn't half bad.

jules-kounde-liverpool-transfer-joe-gomez-premier-league

In contrast, the "sensational" Frenchman, as dubbed by analyst Marcus Bring, scored two goals and provided four assists in 48 appearances in 2023/24, which equates to a less impressive average of a goal involvement every eight games.

What about their underlying numbers, then? Can the former Sevilla ace even things up with what's going on under the hood? In short, yes, yes, he can.

Ultimately, with White producing more goal involvements and Kounde having the better underlying numbers, it would be fascinating to see which one would come out on top in a battle for the right-back position at the Emirates, and while he may cost a significant sum, this seems like a transfer worth pursuing for the Gunners.

Beyond this, he spent a short time in Spain after moving to Barcelona in 2003 as a result of his performances, but soon returned to Turkey and kept up his impressive displays with Beşiktaş, adding titles to his collection.

His individual achievements highlight his impact and performance at the top level of football, as he was selected as the Turkish Footballer of the Year and made the 16-man FIFA Team of the Tournament for the 2002 World Cup.

Hakan Şükür will go down as one of the country’s most prolific strikers, having carved out an extraordinary career full of noteworthy accomplishments and awards, cementing his legendary status in Turkish football.

The striker’s abilities were most clearly demonstrated on the global scene at the 2002 World Cup, where he was a major player in Turkey’s incredible run to a third-place finish. One of his most iconic moments was 11 seconds into the third-place contest against South Korea, where he scored the fastest goal in World Cup history.

However, his efforts didn’t stop there as he went on to score 51 goals for the Turkish national team, making him the team’s all-time leading scorer.

As well as being a Turkey legend, he was highly revered at Galatasaray. During his time at the Turkish giants, he won multiple Süper Lig titles and Turkish Cups, while he was part of the club’s first-ever UEFA Cup victory in 2000, scoring 288 goals and laying on 133 assists in a whopping 539 games.

He wasn’t always based in his home country, as he ended up tasting football in the foreign leagues, where he maintained his scoring prowess throughout spells in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and in Serie A with Inter.

£50 million Arsenal target now seen as risk and could upset Arteta’s squad

Journalist Charles Watts says Arsenal are fans of a £50 million forward, but his signing could "unsettle the squad" for one key reason.

Arsenal targeting new attackers for Arteta this summer

Sporting director Edu Gaspar and manager Mikel Arteta wish to bolster the club's ranks with new forwards ahead of next season, as they look to challenge Man City for a Premier League title yet again.

Prolific £15m striker asks to leave club after Arsenal join race for him

The forward racked up 30 goals in all competitions last season.

Arsenal are widely expected to bring in a new striker, and made a pretty public attempt to bring in Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig after the Slovenia international racked up 18 goals in all competitions last campaign.

Sesko had an offer to join Arsenal this summer, but the 21-year-old instead chose to remain at Leipzig for another season at least. Since then, Arsenal have been heavily linked with Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres, among others.

As well as a centre-forward, there are reports that Arsenal could target another wide player, as Arteta seemingly looks to bring in strength in depth behind the likes of Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard – who both starred for them last season.

Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams is a player widely reported to be on their radar in this regard. The Spaniard, who's dazzled at Euro 2024, also racked up an incredible 19 assists in all competitions at club level last season.

Nico Williams signing would upset Arsenal squad

Watts, speaking to CaughtOffside this week, claims Arsenal signing Williams would upset Arteta's squad – and it could be a risky move despite their admiration for the player.

“Arsenal are admirers of the 21-year-old, but so are plenty of other of the top clubs across Europe and that interest is only going to increase as the tournament goes on,” Watts said.

“On paper, the release clause of around £50million for Williams looks a very appealing one, but as far as I’m aware it’s not as simple as that. You have to remember that release clauses in Spain have to be paid in full and that makes deals very expensive as clubs can’t spread the transfer fee out over the length of the contract like they usually do.

“But in Williams’ case, the wages are also understood to be a pretty significant issue. Athletic Club are big payers. They have to be to ensure they keep their team together given the unique way the club operates.

“So Williams is on good money and the word is that interested clubs have been surprised by the wages he would want to move this summer. Arsenal are good payers, but they have a wage bill that they have worked hard to get in check in recent years. So they won’t do anything stupid and undo that hard work.

“Williams is a talent, but he is still young and relatively inexperienced. For Arsenal to immediately make him one of the highest earners would be a risk, because it could unsettle the squad a bit, especially if he were to come in and suddenly be earning more than some of the experienced players who have been at the club for a while.”

£50k-p/w player "closer than ever" to leaving Leeds for £0 in financial hit

Leeds United could be forced to let one of their players leave for nothing this summer, it has emerged, after a clause in their contract came to light.

Championship beckons for Leeds

A 1-0 loss at Wembley to Southampton on Sunday ensured that Leeds will be playing Championship football once more next season, and continued their wretched curse of never having been promoted via the playoffs.

After the game, Daniel Farke rued the lack of precision from his side, admitting that he felt his team "were not the worse side".

"I can’t really say we are the worst side in this final and to lose this final hurts a lot. In the final third, we were not fully committed to the attack. We were not over-precise with the pass."

But the knock on effect that promotion failure is likely to have at Elland Road could be the real tragedy, with players seemingly already lining up at the exit door and Leeds needing to sell before they can buy anyone with a massive £73.5m of transfer fees still owed this summer.

Crysencio Summerville, the Championship player of the year, seems primed to leave ahead of the new season amid Premier League interest, while Wilfried Gnonto is another that is likely to depart, and question marks remain over whether Joe Rodon can be signed permanently or if they can keep hold of budding superstar Archie Gray. Now, a decision made 12 months ago could force a financial hit.

Leeds loanee free to leave again

That decision comes regarding midfielder Marc Roca, who was signed during Leeds' time as a Premier League club for a fee of £10m and who became an integral part of the Whites midfield in their final top flight season.

Marc Roca for Leeds United.

However, he was allowed to leave on loan last summer rather than stay to fight for promotion, and the former Bayern Munich midfielder made the move to Real Betis, where he has started 24 times this season. The move was likely sanctioned to help preserve his value for a potential sale this summer, while it also took his £50,000 a week wages off the books at Elland Road.

However, as Roca himself revealed, another clause was inserted which may be set to cost Leeds any money this summer.

“There is a clause like this year. If Leeds is not in the Premier League, I can go on loan again. Let’s see. It depends on whether they go up or not," the Spaniard explained.

“They are things out of my control. I sincerely want you to go up, because I wish all the teams I have been in and wish you the best. I am grateful to them, I wish them the best, it has been my home, and from there we will see.”

Leeds could sign "monster" Kamara replacement who was at Wembley on Sunday

Leeds United will attempt to still get this bold deal over the line despite not winning promotion.

And with Leeds having failed to be promoted, a loan move is on the cards again, and local media outlets [via sport witness] reveal that a deal is now "closer than ever", meaning the Whites will miss out on the €12m (£10m) fee a permanent transfer would have netted.

When Roca returns from his second stint away, he will only have 12 months left on his contract at Elland Road, which will likely see the Whites fail to recoup even close to their initial outlay on the Spaniard. All in all, it has turned into a disastrous move for the Yorkshire side from a financial perspective.

Sophia Dunkley 97 sees South East Stars to maiden victory

Dunkley and Davison-Richards set up Stars as Sunrisers fall short despite Carr’s 99

ECB Reporters Network31-Aug-2020Stars 289 for 8 (Dunkley 97, Davison-Richards 61, Patel 4-52) beat Sunrisers 212 (Carr 99, Smith 3-25) by 77 runsAfter their disappointing loss in the opening round of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, South East Stars came back strongly in their second outing to defeat Sunrisers by 77 runs at Beckenham, thanks to a hard-hitting 97 from England’s Sophia Dunkley.Dunkley fell agonisingly short of bringing up the first century of the competition, but nonetheless successfully set up victory for her side, sharing a 123-run partnership for the fourth wicket with her England team-mate Alice Davidson-Richards to take Stars to a total of 289 for 8.With Sunrisers requiring a record-breaking effort – no side has ever chased down more than 280 in women’s List A cricket in England – captain Amara Carr tried valiantly to overcome the odds, but eventually faced double disappointment, falling for 99 as her side were bowled out for 212 in 45.5 overs.Stars had put a dent in the Sunrisers’ hopes early on in their chase – captain Tash Farrant beating Katie Midwood for pace with her third ball of the day to take out her middle stump, leaving them 0 for 1.While Fran Wilson and Carr then shared a fifty-run partnership for the second wicket, they were consistently behind the required rate, and Wilson’s departure in the 11th over – caught at midwicket for 29 trying to push the score along – signalled the start of a slow but steady collapse. Along the way Dunkley added two scalps to her day’s account, while Bryony Smith finished with 3 for 25.Carr continued to battle away at one end, gradually coming out of her shell as her innings progressed, with the highlight an audacious scoop for four to take her into the 90s. Unfortunately for Sunrisers, she was eventually stumped coming down the track to Smith in the 42nd over, and there was no one to take up the mantle. Sunrisers sorely missed batter Cordelia Griffith, one of their three full-time professionals, who was unavailable for selection due to injury.Earlier, having won the toss and chosen to bat first, Stars had initially found themselves in trouble, with the scoreline reading 4 for 2 after the first three balls of the day had been bowled. Smith, having sent Katie Wolfe’s first delivery sailing through the off side for four, then bottom-edged the next one to Carr behind the stumps, while Aylish Cranstone was clean bowled by an inswinger from the 19-year-old, bagging a golden duck. However, Dunkley successfully faced down Wolfe’s hat-trick ball, and – after the further loss of Alice Capsey in the sixth over – was able to marshal an effective recovery. Stars ended the first 10-over Powerplay with 55 runs on the board, doubling their scoring rate from Saturday’s first-round match, and setting the groundwork for a total of almost 300 – the highest in the competition from any team so far.Dunkley was ably supported by Davidson-Richards, who hit a 74-ball 61 before spooning up a straightforward catch to Wilson at cover in the 28th over – becoming the first of four scalps for seamer Sonali Patel. Former England star Susie Rowe yet again proved her mettle for Stars, with an aggressive cameo of 39 to ensure the innings finished strongly. But it was Dunkley who was the real star of the show, combining sensible defence with the ability to send anything wide of the stumps flying towards the boundary – the kind of innings which Stars had so lacked in their opening match on Saturday.Though she eventually fell in the 40th over three runs short of her century, nervously pulling Jo Gardner straight to midwicket, Dunkley – who has not played an international since March 2019 – will be hopeful that she has done enough to convince England coach Lisa Keightley, present at Beckenham, that she is raring to go in the forthcoming series against West Indies.
