Ravi Yadav's unreal record: hat-trick in first over on first-class debut

Twenty-eight-year-old Madhya Pradesh left-arm seamer Ravi Yadav etched his name into the record books when he became the first bowler to pick up a hat-trick in his first over on first-class debut. Incidentally, it came against Uttar Pradesh, the state he hails from.South Africa’s Ricey Phillips had previously taken a hat-trick in his first over in first-class cricket for Border against Eastern Province in 1939-40, but hadn’t bowled in his four previous appearances. Seven other Indians have achieved hat-tricks on debut; Javagal Srinath, Salil Ankola and Abhimanyu Mithun among the more prominent names. However, Yadav’s feat is unique because it came in his very first over. The significance of his achievement is yet to sink in, but Yadav says he’ll sleep happily tonight knowing he’s a first-class cricketer, something he thought wouldn’t happen when he was lost to the game for four years between 2010 to 2014.”I’m not sure if it’s good luck, fate or whatever, but this record has come against UP,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I grew up playing cricket in UP, but couldn’t get chances after I came out of the Under-19s, so it feels nice. I’m happy that I’m finally a Ranji player.”Yadav is a product of the Sports College in Lucknow, the institute that made Suresh Raina and RP Singh the cricketers they went on to become. “I even bowled to Raina a few times in 2010, before his Test debut, but I’m not sure he will remember.”ALSO READ: Sarfaraz Khan’s journey from “panda” to “macho”Injuries then derailed his career after he had graduated from the institute. Between 2010 and 2014, Yadav was away from the game because of injuries to his back and knee.”I saw my career slipping away, I didn’t know where my future lay,” he said. “I saw my Under-19 team-mates progressing and thought ‘we grew up together, now they’ve made it to the next level and I’m nowhere”, so I was motivated even more. Unfortunately I didn’t get chances in UP.”In 2016, he moved to Morena in MP and enrolled for district trials under the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA). He picked up wickets in their local tournaments and was soon assigned to be the state’s net bowler.”For three years, I was a net bowler, but I was never treated like one,” he said. “Our seniors Devendra Bundela, Harvinder Singh Sodhi and Abbas Ali kept talking to me about the importance of keeping fit and grabbing my chances when the opportunities come. The wait is worth it now.”In between, much to his family’s annoyance, Yadav gave up a Railways job to play cricket full-time. It’s a move they didn’t quite make peace with. “Until very recently, they kept asking when are you going to make your life,” he said. “I couldn’t look at them in the eye because I didn’t have answers.”I felt like a failure. Today, I can proudly call them up and tell them I made my Ranji Trophy debut and even picked up a hat-trick. My brother found out and called me. I think he wanted me to break the news to them.”My best friend Kushveer Singh, who played with me in the Under-19s in UP will also be delighted. He told me if I take five wickets on debut, he’ll come to watch me the next day from wherever he is. So, I have at least two more wickets to take tomorrow (Tuesday).”

Umar Akmal facing punishment after misbehaving at fitness test

He is said to have exposed himself in frustration and faces the prospect of being kicked out of the next domestic tournament

Umar Farooq02-Feb-2020

Umar Akmal pads up•AFP

Umar Akmal is likely to find himself in hot water with the PCB once more after he is said to have misbehaved with staff during a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The junior Akmal is believed to have exposed himself in frustration during one test, and now finds himself facing the prospect of being kicked out of the next domestic tournament.Akmal’s elder brother Kamran is also expected to land in trouble after both brothers failed their fitness tests by significant margins. Salman Butt, too, could be in trouble with the authorities, after he stormed out of a fitness test when his request to have it rescheduled was denied. The shortcomings of the Akmal brothers around their fitness regimes has been a talking point for several years now, with Umar last falling foul of the PCB management on this count under former head coach Mickey Arthur; he was sent home on the eve of the Champions Trophy in 2017 after a failed fitness test. Kamran, meanwhile, has not played for Pakistan since 2017, with his lack of athleticism in the outfield a major reason for his prolonged exclusion. The perception that the Akmal brothers have never quite bought into the importance of maintaining rigorous fitness standards hasn’t helped their chances, and for all the changes that Misbah-ul-Haq has sought to bring since taking over from Arthur, the management’s commitment to high fitness standards remains undiluted. Misbah has sought to impose the same high standards in domestic cricket, with each provincial side required to regulate fitness tests on a quarterly basis.ESPNcricinfo understands Umar’s behavior fell short of the mark during the skin-fold test, when he exposed himself completely in front of the trainer and is said to have asked him “Where is the fat?” According to Kamran, Umar did it in mischief and said it was simply a “misunderstanding”. The PCB confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that they were fully aware of the matter, and looking at potential punishments in the context of bringing the game into disrepute. Umar could potentially be axed from the upcoming domestic one-day cup.Kamran, meanwhile, skipped two fitness tests, before ending up failing in nearly all departments when he finally did take one. Central Punjab’s squad was called up at the NCA in batches, with Kamran scheduled to appear for his test on January 11. He skipped that test, purportedly because he had a photoshoot with Peshawar Zalmi. His test was then pushed back to January 20, only for him to opt out, informing the management he was suffering from a bout of fever. He would undertake his test on January 28, alongside his brother, with both falling well short of the required benchmarks.”I had informed the management each time I didn’t come,” Kamran told ESPNcricinfo. “I had reasons and I came on January 28 for the test. As far result is concerned, you will see an improvement in the next test after the PSL.”Misbah has been repeatedly asked about Kamran’s absence from the national side, most recently for the Test squad to face Bangladesh in the first Test at Rawalpindi Stadium on Saturday. “Both of our openers have scored runs, and obviously you only recall a player when there is a place for him,” Misbah had responded. “Certain players are performing so you have to wait.”Both Akmal brothers and Butt have not signed any contracts with their provincial teams, nor with the PCB, and were playing domestic cricket without any contractual obligation.

Farke must finally unleash "dynamite" Leeds star after Rutter surgery

Leeds United secured their place at the top of the Championship table on Sunday as they ran out 2-0 winners against Millwall at Elland Road.

The Whites took advantage of Leicester City, who lost to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup, not being in action in the second tier to leapfrog their rivals at the summit.

Wilfried Gnonto and Dan James scored the goals, either side of half-time, to wrap up the win for the Yorkshire-based side, which sent them into the international break in first place.

Wilfried Gnonto

Daniel Farke's side are currently competing to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League to return to the top-flight at the first time of asking.

Georginio Rutter, who assisted both of the goals against Millwall, has been a key performer at the top end of the pitch for the Whites but they may be without him after the international break.

Latest Leeds United injury news

Shortly after Sunday's victory, Leeds put out a statement to confirm that the France U21 international would not be linking up with his country this week.

The attacking midfielder was due to play for Les Bleus during the international break but he will remain in England to have surgery on a hernia problem.

Their statement revealed that the former Hoffenheim star has been playing through a hernia issue in recent weeks, which they have had to manage carefully, but this break has now provided them with an opportunity to get it sorted out.

Rutter will now undergo a 'minor surgery' to fix the issue and they reveal that the superb attacker will be allowed to return to action ten days after the operation.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

The news was confirmed on Monday and, assuming the surgery took place on the same day, the French gem would be back in training on Wednesday or Thursday next week.

That could throw his involvement in their clash with Watford in doubt as Leeds travel to face the Hornets on Friday next week, which may come too soon for him.

The club's statement did add that they hope, with all being well, that he will be 'in contention' to feature against both Watford and Hull in the Easter matches. However, at this moment in time, it remains to be seen whether or not the Whites star will be available for selection, or at least fit enough to start.

Whilst his absence – from the squad or the starting lineup – would be a blow for Farke, it would provide the manager with an opportunity to finally unleash Mateo Joseph from the start in the Championship.

The exciting young starlet is yet to make his full debut in the second tier but his FA Cup performance against Chelsea and record for the club at youth level suggests that the potential is there for him to be a terrific option.

Why Farke must unleash Mateo Joseph from the start

The former England U20 international, who is currently away with Spain at U21 level, is not a creative maestro like Rutter but Leeds do not have a like-for-like replacement for the French gem in their squad.

However, Joseph is a forward who has the quality to make things happen in the final third and could leave the bulk of the creative workload to be picked up by Crysencio Summerville and Gnonto on the wings, leaving him and Patrick Bamford to focus on finishing chances in and around the penalty box.

The former Espanyol youngster caught the eye at youth level for Leeds with a fantastic return of 19 goals and three assists in 33 appearances in all competitions.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

During the 2022/23 campaign, the Spanish-born marksman plundered 17 goals in 24 matches for the U21s, which included 16 goals in 21 Premier League 2 outings.

Farke has made him a part of his first-team squad this season but all 13 of the 5 foot 11 striker's appearances in the Championship have come as a substitute, with zero goals and zero assists to show for his efforts so far.

His performance in the FA Cup against Chelsea, after being named as a starter against the Premier League side at Stamford Bridge, proved that he does have the ability to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch at senior level.

As you can see in the table above, the young whiz has been the outstanding creative force for Farke's side in the final third so far this season, with his ability to create high-quality opportunities for his teammates.

Piroe, who has 11 league goals this season, and Joseph – the alternatives to Rutter if he misses out through injury – do not offer similar levels of creativity but could make up for that with their respective goalscoring qualities.

This is why the head coach must unleash the Spain U21 international to, hopefully, have his breakthrough display in the Championship with a first start in the division to soften the blow of possibly losing the French star.

Sarr says silent Tottenham hero plays such an important role within Spurs

Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has revealed the unsung teammate who plays such an important role "within" the club.

Postecoglou's most in-form players at Tottenham

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou's arrival has not only given the club a new lease of life overall, but certain squad members appear transformed under the Australian.

Ange could sell star who's had his best season at Tottenham – pundit

He’s hugely popular at the club.

Son Heung-min, for instance, has rediscovered his very best form as Postecoglou's prodigal son – coming after a largely underwhelming 2022/2023 campaign where he couldn't quite hit his previous level.

Sarr is another who can be classed the same way. The Senegalese was a bit-part player at best under Antonio Conte last term, but this season, he's been a fixture in Spurs' midfield as their brightest rising talent right now.

He's made 23 league appearances, scoring three goals and assisting three others, with Tottenham taking inspiration from the way they signed him from FC Metz in 2021.

They sealed an agreement for Sarr on a buy-to-loan-back deal from Metz that year, and it is believed Spurs are using that move as a blueprint for future transfers (Alasdair Gold).

Tottenham did the same with Destiny Udogie from Udinese, with the now-star left-back spending last term back out on loan in Italy, before becoming an essential member of Postecoglou's starting line-up.

Sarr's success story in north London has been excellent to watch, and the African ace has now shared who's been a big help for him behind-the-scenes.

Pape Sarr praises Yves Bissouma's important role "within" Spurs

Speaking to The Telegraph, Sarr named that player as fellow midfielder Yves Bissouma. The "underrated" Mali ace and Sarr have often partnered eachother to brilliant effect in the middle of the park this season. Interestingly, Sarr now claims Bissouma plays an "important" role within Tottenham generally.

“It really was a big help,” Sarr said on Bissouma. “I was settling in to a new life, not just a new club. I benefited from the advice of a lot of team-mates, not just Yves, although he was a big help: Hugo Lloris, Pierre Hojbjerg, Ivan Perisic. It was a tough time because I wasn’t playing regularly.

Yves Bissouma

“Yves is a guy I appreciate a lot. We’ve both come over from Africa and he gives me lots of advice. He behaves a lot like my big brother. He has such an important role within the team and the club. I always listen to what he’s got to say.

“Playing in those games last season are moments I’ll remember forever. Playing in big games like that is a dream come true, what you aim for as a youngster. Irrespective of the results, which didn’t go our way, they were still fantastic experiences. I’d like to think it’s partly down to all the hard work I did in that first year."

Next England boss? Gary Lineker puts shock name in the frame – with Chelsea legend backed to succeed Gareth Southgate regardless of final outcome for Three Lions at Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate may have led England to the semi-finals of Euro 2024 but with his future uncertain, Gary Lineker has suggested a name to take over.

Lineker assumes Southgate won't continueWants to see Lampard as new England bossRichards also backs Lampard's tactical abilitiesGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

Southgate has arguably been England's most successful manager in the 21st century, despite not having won a trophy. With the 53-year-old's current Three Lions contract set to end in December of this year, the FA has been hard at work identifying possible replacements. BBC pundits Lineker and Micah Richards have put forward the name of Chelsea and Three Lions legend Frank Lampard – regardless of how Euro 2024 ends this summer. Lampard has been a fellow pundit on the BBC, with Lineker and Richards clearly impressed with the former Chelsea and Everton boss.

AdvertisementGetty WHAT LINEKER SAID

Speaking on the podcast, Lineker said: "This will be Gareth Southgate’s last tournament, I think, whatever happens. If he wins, I think he’ll absolutely bow out.

"And if he doesn’t then I think he’ll bow out. It’ll be his decision. But I wouldn’t disregard Frank Lampard. I think he tactically gets it. I think the players will respect him immediately. I’m getting ahead of things here. I think he’s been a bit unlucky in his managerial career in some ways. I think he gets it tactically."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Former Manchester City and England defender Richards echoed those claims, saying: “When he went to Derby, I think the feeling was he played really good football, but it should have got them up. He went to Chelsea [during] the transfer embargo and still managed to get top four, with all the bringing the young players through, [Tammy] Abraham, [Mason] Mount, etc. etc. Then he went to Everton, kept them up. It wasn’t the great style of play, but it utilised what he had available to him. He goes, obviously, back to Chelsea. I think that was the one where people were judging him.”

He then praised Lampard's tactical prowess by praising the Chelsea legend's analysis during the BBC's coverage of the Euros: "Frank’s analysis was about three minutes. And, normally, if someone goes that deep, after maybe two minutes, you’ve lost interest. But I was glued to it for three minutes. And you can tell he’s just got something. He’s articulate. The way he explains points. You can tell there’s a manager there inside of him."

WHAT NEXT FOR THE ENGLAND JOB?

While Lampard does not have the best record to back himself, the FA seems short on names at the moment to take over from Southgate ahead of his potential departure. That could bring the Chelsea legend into play despite not having been a coach since 2023.

QeA Q&A: What the new domestic structure means for Pakistan cricket

The PCB has changed the domestic structure of Pakistan cricket once more, but this time really is different

Umar Farooq16-Jul-2019

Ehsan Mani addresses a press conference•AFP

So the domestic structure is being revamped again? Imagine my surprise!Well, yes, but this one might be different? Historically, the PCB has been revamping its domestic circuit every other year. The format of the first-class tournament has been tweaked with regions and departments playing separately one season and together another, like an on-off soap opera relationship. The number of teams participating has been the focus of fierce discussions, with the final number so exotically varied over the years it might as well have been picked randomly; they have ranged from eight in one season to as high as 26 in another.Domestic cricket structure

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class for six teams

Non first-class tournament for six 2nd XI teams

National T20 Cup for six teams playing first-class cricket

T20 Cup for six 2nd XI teams playing non first-class cricket

Pakistan One Day Cup for six teams playing first-class cricket

One Day Cup for six teams playing non first-class cricket

Three-day tournament for six provincial U-19 teams

One-day tournament for six provincial U-19 teams

National inter-city championship among six champions teams of each champion city of each provincial cricket association

Intra-city cricket championship within each provincial cricket association

Club cricket tournaments at each city falling under the domain of each provincial cricket association

But this time – and don’t we always say that? – it might be different. The entire structure – if you could call it a structure – has been effectively dismantled, on the insistence of the current prime minister Imran Khan. With him also being the patron in chief of the PCB, this newer model, which he had passionately championed, looks set to be given a trial run starting this winter. So you’re saying this time there’s an actual change? I’ve been fooled before – anything I should be remotely interested in?Well, at the risk of sounding drastic – and when have we ever been accused of that in Pakistan cricket? – the entire pathway for a player making his way to the national team has been overhauled. Departments like HBL and Sui Gas – mainstays of the domestic scene and dominant forces in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy – which have been operating since 1972 – have been snipped out of domestic cricket altogether, with regions set to take centre stage, much as they do in domestic cricket across several major Full Member nations. Put simply, there will be six provincial teams It’s more simplified than ever. There will be a model of 6 provincial teams playing every form of cricket on the domestic circuit.Six? Like just half a dozen?Yep, that’s about the size of it. Pakistan is divided into four provinces – Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, along with two autonomous territories (Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan) and one federal territory (Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan). The new cricket domestic structure splits the teams along provincial lines. Punjab is the largest province with over three-fifths of the population residing there. The sheer size of it (Punjab’s population alone is twice that of England’s) means the PCB has decided to split the province itself into two, Central Punjab and South Punjab. Sindh, Balochistan and KPK will have one team each while Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and Islamabad will have one association. There is, in theory anyway, a structured pathway for the players in each region. Players will have to compete and perform at club cricket to get selected for respective city teams in the province. There will be intra-city cricket tournaments in six provincial cricket associations from which six respective provincial teams will be selected by the provincial selection committees based on the performance of players in these tournaments. The intention is to turn provinces into provincial cricket associations. The association will be run by a management committee, with each having its own Chief Executive Officer. All six associations will become legal entities responsible for running all cricket in that province right from the grassroots level, including Under 13, Under 16, Under 19 and club/school cricket. So no role for the departments at all? I can’t imagine they were too happy with that arrangement.Your scepticism is well-placed. There was much resistance to the idea, but after repeated back and forth and Imran Khan’s unwavering insistence that departments had to go, it appears the necessary legislation has finally been passed. All private departments have been disengaged while eleven government departments – SNGPL, WAPDA, PIA, SSGC, State Bank, National Bank, Pakistan Television, Pakistan Railways, Pakistan Customs, ZTBL, Civil Aviation Authority have been asked to support the provincial set up in the form of sponsorship and administrative support from grassroots level to national level. All players signed up by departments will be released back to their regions and eligible for selection in their provincial teams. But wait, wouldn’t this drastic reduction in teams means lots of players who made careers from cricket lose their jobs now?Correct, and this was by far the strongest objection to these changes. But the new model ensures that young, performing players remain in contention. Their livelihood will likely not be impacted as 32 players from each respective province will possess an annual contract. Mind you, these 32 will not include international players, which for the purposes of this article means anyone with a central contract. That adds up to just under 200 non-international cricketers till being retained by the system. Cricketers close to retirements will be afforded opportunities to return into the system as coaches, match referees and umpires.National centrally contracted players will be made available to represent the six provincial teams but will not be eligible for provincial contracts. They will be considered for selection under a set formula that provincial associations must abide by to ensure one side doesn’t become too disproportionately stronger than the other. There will be financial incentives for the players, who earn domestic provincial contracts by way of having monthly retainer-ships, match fees, enhanced prize money and individual prizes for each tournament. A domestic player playing all the matches can potentially earn up to PKR 2.5 (approx $15,600) million per season. And what about the Quaid-e-Azam trophy? How will that be affected by this?Thirty-two domestically contracted players will be made available for selection in the first-class team and could participate as and when required for their respective provincial teams. But a squad of only 16 players out of 32 will be chosen for Quaid-e-Azam trophy, while the other 16 will form a second-string team playing non-first class (three-day) cricket. Both tournaments will be run simultaneously across the country. This will provide a bigger pool of players to the respective provincial teams to replace players according to their strategic demands and nature of playing conditions, allowing greater flexibility for teams and potentially improving the standards of competitiveness. There will be 31 first-class and 31 non-first-class matches. Each team gets to play ten matches before the final takes place. Matches will be played on a home and away basis and each team will play one home and one away game to allow them to get the experience of playing at different playing conditions and times. However, exceptions could be made depending on the availability and weather conditions at different venues.Presently, the new structure is being laid down in the constitution to give it legal cover. For the first three years, the PCB will provide support to implement the new structure and try to attract potential sponsors in the hope that long-term, domestic cricket can become financially self-reliant. The PCB will spend Rs 1.1 billion of its own in this time on domestic cricket, while from the fourth season onwards, all provincial associations will be expected to generate enough revenue to be self-sustaining.Will this work?Make no mistake, this is not a tweak but a radical overhaul. Whether you think it’ll work or not might depend on how jaded you’ve become by Pakistan’s attempts to have their domestic system catch up to the rest of the professional world. At least, for once, there might be a reason to tune into the domestic season this time, eh?

'Don't want to think about it' – Mashrafe shrugs off retirement talk

Bangladesh Cricket Board has left the decision on his future with the ODI captain

Mohammad Isam in Birmingham28-Jun-2019Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has dismissed talk of his possible retirement from the game at the end of the World Cup, saying that he hasn’t given the matter any thought. He did, however, reiterate that this would be his last World Cup.”This is definitely my last World Cup, but I will not be retiring after the tournament,” Mashrafe, 35, told ESPNcricinfo. “I don’t want to think about it at the moment, especially with the tournament still in progress. It is a distraction. People become emotional during these times.”But if there’s an instruction from the board, I will have to think about it.”Mashrafe, who became a member of the Bangladesh parliament earlier this year, has never actually hinted at retirement, but speculation has been rife about his future. The move to politics, coupled with his hamstring problems – he has a history of seemingly career-threatening injuries – have only added fuel to the guesswork. But he has led his team well at the World Cup, where Bangladesh have seven points from seven games, and are in the race for the semi-finals.As for Bangladesh Cricket Board bosses speaking to him about his future, Mashrafe has their backing too. “He is leading the side very well, so we are not thinking of anything at the moment,” BCB director Jalal Yunus said. “The decision is up to him, whether he wants to continue playing and leading the side or not. We leave the ball in his court.”The board is fully focused on the World Cup, as we are now in with a chance to play in the semi-finals.”Bangladesh don’t have a lot of ODIs coming up in the next 12 months, although they play a lot of T20Is in the run-up to next year’s World T20 in Australia. As for the World Cup, they have group-stage fixtures lined up against India (Birmingham, July 2) and Pakistan (Lord’s, July 5).

8/10 Leeds star outshone Patrick Bamford vs Norwich

Leeds United closed out their January run of fixtures in th Championship with a fourth straight victory, overcoming a lacklustre Norwich City 1-0 under the lights at Elland Road.

Picking up another three points to put on the board means the Whites are now only two points behind second-place occupied by Ipswich Town, with winnable games to follow to start February versus Bristol City and Rotherham United.

There were a number of standout performers in the assured win over David Wagner's uninspiring Canaries, including goalscorer Patrick Bamford who continued his goalscoring purple patch to steer Daniel Farke's men away from firing an unwanted blank and pile even more pressure onto the Tractor Boys as a result.

Patrick Bamford continues to shine

With four goals in his last five games since being reintroduced into the first team fold this year, Bamford continued to be the focal point in attack for the promotion chasers on Wednesday night.

Found in acres of space free in the box after a delightful Daniel James delivery into the danger area, Bamford had the simple task of connecting with the cross and powering a header in to give Leeds a 1-0 lead early into the first 45 minutes.

The reinvigorated number nine was also useful in his attempts to play others into the contest to try and make the lead more emphatic, registering two key passes during his excellent 90 minutes on the Elland Road turf and only misplacing three of his 26 passes.

Yet, Georginio Rutter was even more unerring in his calmness spraying the ball around the park with ease against the visitors from Norfolk and arguably stole the spotlight away from the 30-year-old centre-forward.

Georginio Rutter's performance in numbers

Not exactly endearing himself to the expectant Leeds fanbase last season as the club suffered relegation, alongside Bamford, Rutter is now a firm fan's favourite in West Yorkshire and for good reason.

The 21-year-old is oozing confidence at this moment in time when he struts onto the field of play, successful with six dribble attempts in the game as Norwich found it hard to keep tabs on the intricate Frenchman foraying forward all night.

Rutter also helped himself to two key passes in the contest, alongside two accurate long balls in a bid to push his team up the pitch and to help his side not just sit back with a precarious one-goal advantage.

Leeds did get over the line in the end – picking up their 11th clean sheet of the campaign – but they could have had more goals courtesy of their dynamic number 24.

The 21-year-old would have one on-target effort on Angus Gunn's goal in the 1-0 win, with his dogged determination to continually regain the ball also not going unnoticed.

Winning a staggering 13 duels, there's no doubt in Farke's mind that his star Frenchman will continue being a fixed presence in the first team for some time to come after such a tireless display.

Given an 8/10 post-match rating by Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross – with Cross stating that Rutter's trickery constantly 'bamboozled' a stunned Canaries back four – the Leeds number 24 arguably offered more in the win than Bamford.

Farke will want both of his star players firing on all cylinders next month, the West Yorkshire giants still very much in the automatic promotion mix.

Jude Bellingham told he will have to emulate Lionel Messi to clinch 2024 Ballon d'Or as Gareth Bale insists he's going head-to-head with Real Madrid team-mate Vinicius Junior

Gareth Bale believes Jude Bellingham must emulate Lionel Messi to edge out Real Madrid team-mate Vinicius Junior in the race for the 2024 Ballon d'Or.

  • Bellingham & Vinicius are favourites for the top award
  • Bale believes winning the Copa or the Euro will be vital
  • Hailed Bellingham for his stellar debut season at Madrid
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Bellingham's remarkable impact at Real Madrid has positioned him as a top contender alongside Vinicius for the top individual accolade. The 20-year-old midfielder has scored 23 goals this season, playing a pivotal role in securing Real Madrid's La Liga title and propelling them to the Champions League final.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham's upsurge in form makes him a crucial figure for England in their quest for the upcoming European Championship in Germany. Whereas, in the absence of Neymar Jr., Vinicius will be the protagonist in the Brazil squad as the Selecao look to dethrone reigning Copa America champions Argentina. Bale believes that if one of them goes on to lift the international trophy, as Messi did in 2022 when he fired Argentina to their World Cup, the scales will tilt in the victor's favour.

  • WHAT BALE SAID

When asked by the PA news agency if Bellingham was a viable candidate for the Ballon d'Or, Bale's response was unequivocal. “Of course,” he affirmed. “Having a major international tournament is going to play a big part in winning that trophy. The Copa America is on as well, so I guess there’s a lot to play for (between Bellingham and Vinicius) because to win the Ballon d’Or you need to win team trophies. If there’s an international tournament you have to provide on that stage as well, like [Lionel] Messi did a couple of years ago. Obviously, there’s a lot to prove, but he’s done a lot of the hard work already.”

    WHAT NEXT?

In the short term, both Bellingham and Vinicius are focused on delivering the 15th European title for Real Madrid by beating Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on June 1. But before flying to England, the duo will be in action in Real's final La Liga fixture on Sunday against Real Betis.
