RP Singh's selection reflects India's tragicomic series

How does a bowler who hasn’t played for India for two years, and has had no first-class cricket since January, get in the side ahead of someone who was a big part of India’s World Cup-winning campaign?

Nagraj Gollapudi at The Oval18-Aug-2011If any proof was needed that this England series is turning out to be a tragicomic one for India, it came when RP Singh was told at the very last minute to strip off his training gear, tie his bootlaces and rush onto the field at The Oval to deliver the first over of the final Test. Now remember, this is RP Singh, a man who played his last Test on a flat track at Motera in 2008. The last time he bowled in a first-class match was in the Duleep Trophy for Central Zone versus South Zone, between January 26-29, where he got just three wickets in the 522-run defeat. This was a bowler who India had pulled out of cold storage, once the full extent of Zaheer Khan’s injury was revealed, a bowler who was re-entering the Test arena on the back of delivering 50 overs in 14 IPL matches. As RP Singh sprayed five out of his first six deliveries onto, or sometimes behind, England’s openers’ pads, at a pace that made it inappropriate to term him a fast bowler, people began to wonder if this was joke. On match-day eve, MS Dhoni said India were not desperate, or thinking about winning or avoiding defeat at any cost. The way they started today, it seemed they were desperate to avoid playing at any cost.At the end of the day, RP Singh revealed that Praveen Kumar had pulled out of the Test at the last possible minute. There was nothing in the morning warm-up sessions that suggested RP Singh would play; he was seen striding in delicately, delivering harmless punches at VVS Laxman in the nets. In fact, on the scorecards printed by the ECB, P Kumar was listed as No. 9 under the India column.”This morning after the warm-up when PK [Praveen] said he was not fit for the match, that is when the coach [Duncan Fletcher] came to me and told me I was playing,” RP Singh said.He did not deny that he was “nervous”. Fair enough. But then he also said that “gradually I got my line and length back”. The two spells he bowled in the little play possible today read: 7-2-19-0 from the Vauxhall End and then 3-1-5-0 from the Pavilion End. Economical, yes, but in conditions that were overcast and with a new ball in hand, he failed to beat the outside edge even once. At the media conference, he said that between his last trip to England in 2007, a series where he kept the England batsmen on their toes in the company of Zaheer Khan, and now he had equipped himself with an additional weapon – swinging the ball in to the left-handers. But today there was not one ball that he could bend in past the defence of Andrew Strauss or Alistair Cook.Despite his lack of first-class outings in recent times, and looking clearly rust at The Oval, RP Singh said he was match-fit. “I played the IPL and a few club matches. In India, the domestic four-day season is between September and March but I played a few one-day games and the IPL so I am fit for these matches.”RP Singh may come in for some criticism for his insipid performance on the first day, but can you really blame a bowler who has been struggling with form and fitness issues in the last few years for being ineffective? The big question is why and how did he become Zaheer’s replacement. Was it more out of hope than belief that the selectors picked him. Were they simply thinking about the fact that RP Singh had done so well during the victorious 2007 series and not about his recent performances? Importantly, why does Munaf Patel, a more permanent member of the India squad in the recent past, and a smart bowler who was a critical part of the World Cup-winning team, continue to warm the bench? What sort of inference does he derive when a bowler who has not featured for India in two years is played ahead of him? These and many other burning questions will continue to be asked in the coming days and weeks.

Chanderpaul inspires promising group

Cricinfo assesses the performances of West Indies’ players in their 2-0 series loss to Australia

Brydon Coverdale17-Jun-2008West Indies lost the series but they showed signs of improvement and gave the world’s No. 1 team some headaches throughout the three-Test tour. While one familiar face carried the bulk of the batting responsibility, a couple of promising younger players were also unearthed. Cricinfo assesses the 16 men West Indies used during the series.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul
The Player of the Series, and deservedly so. Chanderpaul was figuratively immovable for much of the series with a string of not-out scores and from the start of his 107 in Antigua to the end of his 50 in Barbados, he batted for more than 18 hours without being dismissed. He was also literally immovable in Jamaica, when a Brett Lee bouncer crashed into his helmet and left him out cold for several minutes before he carried on batting and registered a courageous century. Comfortably the leading scorer for the series, he made 442 runs at 147.33.7.5

Fidel Edwards
West Indies’ leading wicket taker with 15 at 25.13, he bowled fast and with dangerous late swing. Was at his best carrying the attack in Jamaica, when his eight wickets for the match gave West Indies hope. Enjoyed a series-long rivalry with Lee, whom he struck on the helmet a couple of times with vicious bouncers.Dwayne Bravo
Continues to frustrate West Indies fans with promising batting starts, only to fall when he appears to be set, as in Barbados when his brutal second-innings 69 gave his team hope of a record chase. His up-and-down series included innings of 46, 0, 45, 1, 29 and 69, but the lack of a century was disappointing for the No. 6. His medium-pace bowling looked innocuous but he had a habit of making handy breakthroughs and his ten wickets at 37.10 was an impressive result.7

Ramnaresh Sarwan
Captain for the first two Tests, Sarwan’s only major batting contributions came in Antigua. But they were particularly important; his first-innings 65 kept West Indies in touch and his outstanding second-innings 128 ensured the match would be saved, which was a great result after they had some top-order stumbles. He finished the series with 275 runs at 45.83, a decent effort after he looked out of sorts in Jamaica.Xavier Marshall
Was surprisingly thrust into the team in Antigua after three years off the international scene, and boasting no first-class centuries. Immediately displayed his promise with a confident 53 that ended with a brain-freeze leave to a straight ball, and was even more impressive with his first-class best 85 in Barbados. Not backward at coming forward, he drove superbly, took several blows to the helmet and thrived on his mini-battles with Lee. Certainly a player to watch.6

Jerome Taylor
Missed the first Test with a back problem and as soon as he returned in Antigua showed his value with five wickets for the match. Was West Indies’ second-most threatening fast bowler but would be disappointed that he didn’t make his breakthroughs earlier, before the batsmen had made contributions.Denesh Ramdin
His glovework was strong and a series of diving catches was excellent reward after long hours of training with the assistant coach and former wicketkeeper David Williams. His batting was often underwhelming, although a second-innings 36 in Jamaica gave Australia some concerns and his unbeaten 21 in Antigua helped West Indies salvage a draw.5.5

Sulieman Benn
Was only included in Barbados for his second Test and showed some promise with three second-innings wickets that came in a marathon spell. He bowled 47 overs in that innings and was unlucky not to have more breakthroughs. Used his extreme height to gain sharp bounce, flighted the ball beautifully and turned it venomously away from the right-handers from around the wicket.5

Runako Morton
Began the series strongly, with a patient and mature 67 in the first innings in Kingston as he proved a solid ally for Chanderpaul. After that innings his judgement was poor and he played some terrible shots at times when West Indies needed him to be steady, and he was axed for Barbados. Was one of their most brilliant fielders and a cracking reflex catch at short extra cover at Sabina Park was memorable.

4.5

Darren Sammy
Was a useful bits-and-pieces player but struggled to make a major contribution in his two appearances. Picked up three wickets for the series and his second-innings 35 at Sabina Park displayed impressive maturity as he and Ramdin tried to rebuild the chase of 287 and gave Australia some nervous moments.4

Daren Powell
Managed to hold down the new-ball duties despite being clearly the least penetrating of West Indies’ fast men. Finished the series with six wickets at 61, continuing his disappointing run in Tests. His only really dangerous spell came in the second innings in Kingston, where he grabbed three top-order wickets as Australia crumbled to 18 for 5.3.5

Chris Gayle
Missed the first two Tests with a groin injury and was still not 100% when he returned in Barbados. Threw the bat wildly and was twice out to loose shots, ran gingerly between the wickets and struggled to inspire his team in the field in the second innings when Phil Jaques and Simon Katich batted West Indies out of the match.Devon Smith
Was pushed back up to open after batting at No. 6 against Sri Lanka and despite getting starts in both innings at Sabina Park, rarely looked completely at ease. Failed again in Antigua, extending his long run of disappointing form in Tests, and was axed for the third match.3

Sewnarine Chattergoon
Was initially unavailable with a shoulder injury and when he did come in for the final Test, wrenched his ankle in the field sliding to stop a boundary. Made no real contribution with the bat but bravely hobbled out with a runner in the second innings as West Indies chased a massive total, despite being on crutches the day before.Brenton Parchment
Looked vulnerable at the top of the order in his only outing. His technique had some problems and he was caught behind off Stuart Clark for low scores in both innings in Jamaica. Was brilliant in the field and his spectacular diving catch to end Ricky Ponting’s innings on 158 was one of the lasting images of the tour.Amit Jaggernauth
Was pounded into oblivion by Andrew Symonds in the second innings of his Test debut in Jamaica and, in a familiar manner for West Indies spinners, was immediately dumped. Picked up just one wicket but it was a memorable one, Michael Hussey brilliantly caught at first slip by Bravo.

No deal was done, despite being heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford, and the 33-year-old goalkeeper remains part of Unai Emery’s plans with another recruitment window closing across Europe.

  • WHAT MARTINEZ SAID

Alejandro Martinez claims his sibling ultimately ended up staying put as Villa did not want to sell. He told : “I was told that Emi gave a lot as a professional and as a person, they love him, and you could see that on the pitch.  He is well-liked, and the directors didn’t want to sell him because he is the key player in the team, and another team wanted him. It was that commercial dispute.

“These are decisions made by club officials. It didn’t happen, but it’s like everything else in business. The sporting side of things was left out of it, and everything is fine. Emi never had an argument with Unai; it was all within the management’s control, and the clubs couldn’t agree.

“At Aston Villa, he’s the Diego [Maradona] of Napoli. He gave a lot at Villa, like Kun [Aguero] did at City, like Leo [Messi] did at Barca. They’re legendary players, and it’s going to be hard to surpass what he did at Aston Villa.”

Martinez’s father, Alberto, added on the reasons for a high-profile transfer never materialising: “This is a job, this is a factory, and factories have employees. He’s just another employee, and the factory won’t let him go if he’s good. It’s all business. Tomorrow it will happen, today it didn’t happen.”

De Klerk puts on a big show to script series win for South Africa

Masabata Klaas, Ayabonga Khaka, Tazmin Brits, Lara Goodall and Marizanne Kapp play key hands as South Africa win with lots to spare

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Sep-2023

Nadine de Klerk made all the difference with her medium pace•PCB

They might have swept the T20I series, but Pakistan are finding the ODIs a tougher nut to crack, conceding the series at the first time of asking, losing the second game by six wickets to fall 2-0 behind. The star of the show for South Africa on Monday was Nadine de Klerk, who first returned 4 for 32, and then hit a 30-ball 24 not out as South Africa chased down the modest 169-run target in 34 overs. She wasn’t the only star performer for South Africa on the day, though. When they bowled, after Pakistan opted to bat on winning the toss, Masabata Klaas and Ayabonga Khaka contributed with wickets, three and two respectively. And Tazmin Brits, Lara Goodall and Marizanne Kapp chipped in with the bat in the chase. But de Klerk stood out. She picked up the first three Pakistan wickets to fall, inside her first two overs. The medium pacer struck with her first two deliveries, in the eighth over, getting both Muneeba Ali and Sadaf Shamas caught behind by wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta. First ball of her next over, she found a way through Sidra Ameen’s defences to hit the stumps.Pakistan were 20 for 3 in 9.1 overs at that stage, and Klaas and Khaka got their first wickets not long after, reducing Pakistan to 49 for 6 in the 18th over. There was a fightback.Aliya Riaz, who had walked out at No. 5, and Fatima Sana, the No. 8 batter, took the fight to the South Africans. They stitched together a stand of 114 for the seventh wicket, Riaz scoring 53 in 86 balls, with three fours, and Sana hitting 69 in 87 balls, with ten fours, to give Pakistan something to work with. But, again, once they were separated, the end came early, with de Klerk, who had returned 3 for 23 in the first game, picking up her fourth wicket when she sent back Umm-e-Hani.It didn’t seem like a lot of runs. Almost exactly what Pakistan had scored in the first game (165) when responding to South Africa’s 292 for 4, and South Africa put up a similarly strong performance with the bat in their chase on this occasion.Captain Laura Wolvaardt didn’t last long, falling to Sadia Iqbal after scoring 13 in an opening stand of 41 with Brits. But Brits (45 in 54 balls) and Goodall (36 in 53) got the chase on track with a 40-run stand for the second wicket. It was fairly straightforward for South Africa after that, and though Sune Luus fell for 10, Kapp’s 29 not out in 28 balls and de Klerk got the job done with lots to spare. The third game will be played in Karachi, the same as the first two, on Thursday.
