Sky Sports: Sunderland in advanced talks to sign 6ft 3 forward with Isidor

There is just a week left of the summer transfer window, and Sunderland are in advanced talks to sign another attacker after Wilson Isidor.

It has been a relatively uneventful transfer window for the Black Cats so far, as the club hasn’t spent any money at all on the players they have brought into the football club over the past few months. But while it has been quiet in terms of transfers, it has been an excellent start to the 2024/25 season under Regis Le Bris, as his Sunderland side sit joint-top of the Championship table after winning their opening two games.

Sunderland look set for a race to sign Championship attacker.

Sunderland’s summer transfer window has seen them bring in just four new players so far, with all of those additions being on free transfers. The club has brought in goalkeeper Simon Moore as well as another goalkeeper, Blondy Nna Noukeu, and they have also signed Alan Browne and Ian Poveda.

These are players who have experience in the Championship, and the club believe they can improve the current options. But their summer business doesn’t seem to be stopping there, as it was reported earlier this week that Burnley winger Manuel Benson is set to leave Turf Moor and Sunderland were “on it” when it came to signing the attacker.

As well as the Black Cats looking to sign Benson, they have signed a new centre-forward, with Zenit St Petersburg chairman Alexander Medvedev confirming that striker Isidor was set to join Sunderland on loan deal, a move which was announced on Friday.

But while the club may be working on incomings, Le Bris could be about to lose one of his best players. It has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that Ipswich Town are set to sign winger Jack Clarke in a deal worth up to £20 million. This will be a bitter blow to Sunderland, but there could be good news on the horizon as the club closes in on a new signing.

Sunderland are in advanced talks to sign a 6ft 3 player

According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Sunderland are in advanced talks with Red Bull Salzburg over the signing of striker Roko Šimić. He goes on to report that the Black Cats are hopeful of signing the 6ft 3 centre forward, with him now holding direct talks with the club’s hierarchy.

The 20-year-old is the son of former Croatian international Dario Šimić. The striker has been with the Austrian side since July 2021 but has spent the last few seasons on loan at other clubs. In the 2022/23 campaign, Šimić spent the second half of the season on loan at Swiss side FC Zurich, where he scored four goals in 16 games.

Last season, the striker scored five goals in 28 league appearances for Red Bull Salzburg, but it now appears as though his time with the Austrian club is about to come to an end, as his contract with the club comes to an end this time next year.

Angelo Mathews to be Sri Lanka's stand-in captain for T20I series in West Indies

Dasun Shanaka, the appointed captain, is yet to join the team because of a delay in obtaining a US transit visa

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Feb-2021Angelo Mathews has been named as Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain for the T20I series in the West Indies as Dasun Shanaka, the appointed captain, is yet to join the team because of a delay in obtaining a US transit visa. Mathews has previously led Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, 106 ODIs and 13 T20Is.As it stands on Sunday, Shanaka is yet to receive the visa, and as such seems likely to miss the entire T20I series – his first assignment as the new T20I captain. He will hope to make the ODI leg of the tour at least, which starts on March 9.Shanaka did have a proper US transit visa – valid for five years – on a previous passport. But as he had lost that passport two years ago, visa officers told him they must do additional checks, meaning they were not able to greenlight the visa for this tour in time for him to make the flight. This news is the latest setback for Sri Lanka, who also lost the services of Lahiru Kumara for this tour after testing positive for Covid-19 in the days before departure for the West Indies.Sri Lanka’s multi-format tour of the Caribbean kicks off on March 3, with the T20I series.

Van Dijk netted an 18th-minute equaliser at the Emirates Stadium after Bukayo Saka had fired Arsenal into an early lead, suggesting it wasn't hard to escape the attentions of marker Thomas Partey. Although Mikel Merino restored Arsenal's lead, Liverpool breached the home defence again late on when Mohamed Salah ensured the points would be shared.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal's greatest strength last season was their defence, but William Saliba was suspended for the visit of Liverpool after getting sent off in last weekend's shock defeat to Bournemouth. That meant Ben White moving across from right-back to partner Gabriel and Thomas Partey filling in on the flank. This season, Liverpool are the defensive standard bearers, conceding only five times in nine Premier League games.

  • WHAT VIRGIL VAN DIJK SAID

Van Dijk said: "It's a very tough place to come, teams have noticed that over the years. They have created a solid team and make it difficult for everyone. To come back twice is a good thing, we take the point – that's the feeling. When I was marked by Thomas Partey, he only looked at me, so it was quite easy to get away from him. You need a bit of luck, and I was there to tap it in. I try to be important on every set-piece we have."

    WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

Liverpool lost top spot in the Premier League due to Manchester City beating Southampton 24 hours earlier. They are in action at the same time or later than the champions in each of the next three gameweeks, so will be relying on City dropping points if the balance is to shift again. But the pair then meet each other at Anfield on December 1.

Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar tests positive for Covid-19

Habibul Bashar, the former Bangladesh captain and current national selector, has tested positive for Covid-19. The news comes soon after Test captain Mominul Haque and allrounder Mahmudullah had also tested positive earlier this week in a spate of infections among the regulars to the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.Bashar is isolated at home, but hoping to return to work in time for the Bangabandhu T20 Cup scheduled for later this month.”I was really careful, but still I got infected,” Bashar told . “There’s nothing we can do. The virus won’t let go of anyone. I felt feverish from Monday, and then it got to 102 degrees. It continued into Tuesday, so I tested on Wednesday morning and received the result in the evening.”Bashar is one of two senior selectors employed by the BCB, and has been a constant during training and matches at the ground over the last few months. In recent weeks, Abu Jayed, Saif Hassan and Mashrafe Mortaza, as well as a few cricketers and coaching staff from the Under-19 camp have all tested positive.According to the official figures, there have been 425,353 Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh, with over 6000 deaths.

Arsenal must now cash in on £30m star who’s never getting past Havertz

Arsenal have been on the rise under manager Mikel Arteta, who returned to his former stomping ground as a player in December 2019 and has since taken the Emirates Stadium to the forefront of Europe.

Despite falling short to Manchester City in successive Premier League seasons, Arsenal are one of the finest teams English football has seen in a long time, playing with panache and gusto and truly looking like a wrecking ball that will continue to swing for years to come.

Arsenal is littered with talent. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, William Saliba and Martin Odegaard are some of the finest players in their position in the world, while the likes of Ben White, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Magalhaes have gone from strength to strength under Arteta's guiding wing.

Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard for Arsenal

But an unfortunate by-product of exponential growth is that certain cogs get left behind. This is within the very nature of collective evolution in football: high-class additions leave some existing options knocked down the pecking order.

One such player is Emile Smith Rowe, who's looking likely to leave his boyhood club this summer.

The latest on Emile Smith Rowe

According to Football Insider, Arsenal are looking to offload several fringe stars to fund several ambitious transfer moves, and Smith Rowe has thus been transfer-listed for £30m.

Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal

He's not the only Hale End product expected to leave, Reiss Nelson has recently informed Edu Gaspar of his intention to seek a new challenge, but Smith Rowe would be the highest-profile departure.

Sadly, it makes a lot of sense and must happen.

Why Emile Smith Rowe must be sold

Smith Rowe caused something of a storm when bursting onto the scene at Arsenal, fuelled by a promising loan spell in the Championship with Huddersfield.

Despite enjoying great success during the 2021/22 campaign – netting ten top-flight goals – he has since suffered from injuries that have kept him on the fringe as Arsenal skyrocketed. Opportunities have since been few and far between and the 23-year-old, who has two years left on his contract, must now move for the good of his career.

Smith Rowe's homegrown status means that Arsenal would cash in for pure profit – and £30m would be a welcome sum as Arteta seeks to address areas in midfield and at centre-forward.

On that note, with Arsenal looking to sign a striker this summer, Havertz might find himself deployed back in a deeper role, in an advanced, dynamic midfield position.

Signed from Chelsea for £65m last summer, the Germany star initially flattered to deceive but finished the campaign strongly, praised for his "magnificent" performances by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

The 25-year-old has translated his fine form to the international stage, scoring and assisting as Germany trounced Scotland in the Euro 2024 opener, starting up front but often dipping deeper to knit Julian Nagelsmann's team together.

Ranking among the top 20% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for pass completion and the top 14% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, he has the skills to retain his level of performance in a deeper role for Arsenal once again.

Unfortunately for Smith Rowe, this only compounds his peripheral role in the London side, and furthers the argument that he should search for a new start to produce the performances all Gunners know lie within his locker.

Back in 2021, Aston Villa offered Arsenal £30m for Smith Rowe's signature. Rejected. But now, teams like Villa have an opening to sign a truly talented player, who has been called "special" by pundit Jamie Carragher.

For Arsenal, given the success of players such as Havertz, Smith Rowe must definitely be sold, lest he sink further into the abyss, unable to showcase his skills.

Arsenal could finally banish "monster" dud earning more than Saka & Saliba

It’s time for the Gunners to move on from the talented player.

Toms Abell and Lammonby both hit tons as Somerset seize control

Tom Abell and Tom Lammonby hit unbeaten centuries as Somerset set Gloucestershire an unlikely victory target of 385 on the second day of the Bob Willis Trophy match at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton.A day totally dominated by the home side saw Gloucestershire bowled out for 76 from an overnight 13 for four, Craig Overton claiming 4 for 25 and Josh Davey 3 for 21.That gave Somerset a first innings lead of 161. Skipper Abell and Lammonby then both finished 101 not out after an unbroken second-wicket stand of 211 had guided their side to 223 for one when Abell declared, aware of the forecast of rain on the final two days.It was 20-year-old Lammonby’s maiden first class century to follow his maiden first class wicket in Gloucestershire’s first innings. The visitors were left with a tricky eight overs to negotiate, losing Ben Charlesworth, Chris Dent and Tom Lace before closing on 14 for three.Gloucestershire were under pressure from the opening delivery of the day, having already lost four first innings wickets. Davey made the first breakthrough with the total on 29 when nightwatchman Matt Taylor was caught at point for 12.The heat of battle between the two West country rivals was turned up when Jamie Overton thought he had George Hankins caught behind for six with the score 48 for five.Umpire Paul Baldwin disagreed and Overton showed his displeasure, first by crouching with head in hands and then unleashing three successive bouncers at the Gloucestershire batsman. The final ball of the over saw Hankins edge a low catch to Craig Overton at second slip and Somerset felt justice had been done.Lace, who showed better technique than a number of team-mates, was bowled by Jack Brooks for 21, attempting to drive, with the scoreboard showing 56 for seven.Gareth Roderick fell lbw to Craig Overton and Gordon Scott was caught behind off Lammonby’s left-arm seam before Ryan Higgins was last man out for 15.With a commanding lead, Somerset were able to approach their second innings positively. They suffered an early setback when Eddie Byrom chipped a catch to mid-wicket off a leg-side delivery from David Payne. But from then on Lammonby and Abell took control, looking increasingly assured in a partnership that had added 81 by tea, which was taken at 93 for one. Suddenly, batting appeared straightforward on a pitch that had never looked to have any demons in it.The final session saw Abell score more fluently to begin with, producing some textbook drives. Left-hander Lammonby, who had never scored even a half-century in first class cricket, moved cautiously to that landmark, having faced 122 balls and hit five fours.Abell was first to his ton, with two to third man off Ben Charlesworth. It was his second hundred of the competition and was made off 153 balls, with 17 boundaries.Lammonby was forced to hit out in a bid to reach three figures before the declaration and did so to great effect. Twice he cleared the ropes and a pulled four to fine leg off Scott took him to his century off 160 balls. After one more delivery Abell called a halt and soon his seamers were cutting through Gloucestershire’s batting as they had done in the first innings.Davey had Charlesworth caught behind with a ball that lifted and bowled Lace with the first ball of the final over after Craig Overton had pinned Dent lbw. Only the weather would now appear to stand between Somerset and a third win from four Bob Willis Trophy games.

Up to 24 domestic women’s cricketers will receive retainer payments from June 1 as the ECB tries to ease some of the financial hardship of their season being disrupted by the Covid-19 lockdown. The ECB was due to award full-time contracts to 40 domestic players this year under a plan to transform women’s and girls’ cricket, with those players involved in a 50-over competition between eight new regional teams in September. Clare Connor, the ECB’s managing director of women’s cricket, said it was still the intention to award those contracts in 2020, but that the regional retainers were designed to support players financially in the meantime.”The momentum behind the women’s game has been staggering in the last few years and it is still firmly our ambition to build on that,” Connor said on Tuesday. “As we emerge from this pandemic, we believe even more strongly that cricket will be a sport that throws its arms around everyone – truly inclusive, diverse and a sport for modern Britain to be proud of.ALSO READ: Hundred delay a knock for women’s game – Katie Levick”This was due to be the most exciting year in the game’s history for our leading domestic players. A number of them would have been hoping to sign a full-time contract with one of our eight Regions this summer. While we still intend to award those full-time contracts in 2020, we want to try to support our players as much as we can until that point, hence the introduction of these Retainers to provide an interim solution.”As the effects of COVID-19 on the rest of the summer and beyond become more apparent, we will continue to support our players to the best of our ability, and we promise them that our drive for a more gender-balanced sport remains vitally important.”ECB Women’s Cricket Regions•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Earlier this month, Connor said that while the domestic competition had not been removed from this year’s schedule, “we have to plan for it not to happen as much as we have to plan for it to happen”. Meanwhile, the decision to postpone the inaugural Hundred competition until 2021 left a host of women’s players facing the prospect of not playing – or earning an income from the sport – this season. The eight regions will recruit players to the retainer scheme and, in turn, the players will take part in strength and conditioning programmes, online education on topics including anti-corruption and anti-doping, and devote time to activities and appearances aimed at supporting the game.
