Cannon snapped up in December 2022Helped secure promotion back into the EFLImportant part of Parkinson's plansGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Andy Cannon joined the Red Dragons from Hull City in December 2022, bringing with him National League experience from a loan spell at Stockport County. He enjoyed promotion parties in back-to-back campaigns as Wrexham swept to a record-breaking title triumph in 2023.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The hard-working midfielder has been a regular in Phil Parkinson’s plans this season, taking in 31 appearances across all competitions. His value to the cause is not lost on those around him, while supporters have taken a consistent performer to their hearts.

WHAT KER SAID ABOUT CANNON

Cannon does not, however, hold the same standing at SToK Racecourse as the likes of star striker Paul Mullin and former Republic of Ireland international James McClean. Club director Humphrey Ker hopes that situation changes soon, posting on X following a 3-1 win over Morecambe: “Man of the Match performance. All hail @andycannon96, the prancing Prince of the Stōk Cae Ras. High time he had a proper song.”

WHAT NEXT FOR CANNON & WREXHAM?

Cannon will not be overly concerned if he remains off the Wrexham song list. The priority for all concerned this season is to collect enough points from the club’s 10 remaining games in 2023-24 to ensure that they secure a top-three finish in League Two and automatic promotion.

Australians pay their respects in Belgium and France

The team’s visit to the First World War battlefields of the Western front ahead of their England assignment was “a real eye-opener”, according to captain Tim Paine

If the timing of the Australian team’s visit to the First World War battlefields of the Western front was coincidental with the start of a new era for the side, it was still quite fitting for the group to be humbled by newfound knowledge of history, and to get a fresh perspective from outside the team “bubble”.A three-day tour of Western France and Belgium, culminating in the squad’s participation in the evening ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, had been a discussion point for team manager Gavin Dovey and former coach Darren Lehmann for quite some time, but the Newlands ball-tampering scandal ensured that it would be undertaken by the first touring team helmed by Justin Langer. This, in turn, provided a link to a couple of rather different Australian team trips to scenes of conflict – Gallipoli in 2001 and France in 2005 – that Langer participated in as a player. There had been criticism in 2001 particularly, as the team donned military slouch hats and re-enacted a photograph of cricket being played on Shell Green, but this time the visit was more immersive and low-key, devised to generate deeper understanding of events of more than a century ago.The image of the national team took an amighty battering in South Africa, costing Steven Smith and David Warner their leadership positions and alongside Cameron Bancroft their Cricket Australia contracts. But the sight of a humbled successor Tim Paine reading the ode taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem “For the Fallen” at the Menin Gate, before Aaron Finch, Alex Carey, Jhye Richardson and D’Arcy Short laid wreaths, presented a contrasting picture.”We’ve come over to have a look at the Western Front, something that’s been in motion for probably a couple of years now. We thought was a good idea for the team to come over as young Australian men to retrace the steps of some really brave Australians over 100 years ago now,” captain Paine said. “It’s been a really great exercise for us as young men to come and learn more about that, and there’s lots we can take out of it.”We’ve seen so much stuff that I think we’d never thought we would have seen. I think it’s been amazing to go through the cemeteries and the battlegrounds and see how well they’ve been maintained. It’s been a real eye-opener, just the magnitude of it and the size of the cemeteries, there’s so much we can take away from it individually and as a group.”As a group [we’re] coming over to England now to play cricket, we’re obviously not going to war, but I think the importance of the things we can take from the men who came over so long ago is the teamwork and the mateship and the hard work and the things they did for each other. So we’re very lucky to be here playing a game of cricket, they came over here in really trying circumstances and did their best, and I think that’s something we can take from it going to England this week.”Paine, Langer and the rest of the squad spent time at battlefields including Fromelles and Passchendaele, two sights of enormous sacrifice by Australian troops amid the wider bloodbath of Allied offensive operations. Also contemplated was the vastness of the Tyne Cot cemetery and memorial, Pozieres, Amiens, Villers-Bretonneaux, and the Menin Gate, dedicated to the memory of more than 54,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the campaigns around the Ypres salient but whose bodies were never found. Some measure of the affect of these places came when Paine prepared for his reading of the ode as part of the nightly Menin Gate remembrance ceremony. “I was fine going down there because I thought it was a bit smaller than what it was. But once I got there and was introduced to the people who were running it, the lady said ‘have you got a hand card so you can read it out?’ I said ‘no I’m all good, got it in the mind’ and she said, ‘I think it’d be a good idea if you took a card up, we’ve had army generals here before who’ve forgotten the words’. So thankfully I took a hand card up with me, because as soon as I stood up there I actually forgot the first line.”It was a bit overwhelming to be honest, I was really privileged as a young Australian cricketer getting to stand where we were last night. To read the ode is a bit of an honour to the people who have come over here and fought so hard for us. I probably didn’t realise again the magnitude of that until we got there. I was expecting just us and a handful of people. To see so many people there, and something that’s done every night there, it was amazing, and the magnitude of it hit me when I walked out to read the ode. I realised how privileged and lucky I was to be given the right to go and do that.”After the trip to mainland Europe, the touring party returned to London for more typical training preparation ahead of their five-match ODI series against England, with two warm-up matches to be played against county sides. Paine reckoned that the experience would doubtless enhance his efforts alongside Langer to foster a new attitude in the Australian side, as they juggle the demands of performance but also respect.”The main purpose of the trip was young Australian men coming over and trying to learn more about our history,” Paine said. “But one of the things, certainly, we’ve got out of this trip is two days together as a team and getting to know each other and talking to people and each other about things other than cricket, which we don’t actually get to do. It’s been a really worthwhile exercise, not just learning about our history, but from a team aspect to get to know people [from the cricket set-up] outside of cricket.”

Dan Christian signs with Melbourne Renegades; James Faulkner joins Hobart Hurricanes

The allrounder will play for Renegades for the next three seasons, having signed a multi-year deal at the age of 35

Dan Christian signs with Melbourne Renegades

Allrounder Dan Christian will play for Renegades for the next three Big Bash League seasons, having signed a multi-year deal with the Melbourne team at the age of 35. Christian was part of the Hobart Hurricanes side that made the BBL final in 2017-18.However, another allrounder James Faulkner has joined the Hurricanes, after spending seven seasons with the other Melbourne team, the Stars, according to a  report. The signing is meant to make up for Christian’s departure and is expected to be announced on Tuesday.”By signing Dan we know we’ve got a T20 player who has proven his ability around the world over a long period of time,” Renegades coach Andrew McDonald said. “He has the ability to change the game with his big hitting in the middle order. He also brings useful variations with the ball and plenty of experience bowling at the death, so having that option gives the team added flexibility.”Christian is presently playing in the IPL, for Delhi Daredevils coached by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, but he has been picked for only four out of 12 games. His batting form has been poor – 26 runs off 33 balls – and he has four wickets in 11.5 overs at an economy rate of 8.53.In the 2017-18 BBL, however, Christian was more productive in home conditions for Hobert Hurricanes. He scored 216 runs at a strike rate of 153 and average of 27, and took 11 wickets in 33 overs at an economy rate of 8.87.

Newcastle: PIF backed to sign "mind-boggling" £150k-p/w player

Newcastle United have been backed to sign an exciting player by TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor, who believes the player would rather join the northeast outfit over several other high-profile clubs in the Premier League.

How have Newcastle started the season?

Eddie Howe’s side have had a mixed start to the new campaign having secured two wins but also suffered three defeats from their opening five games, meaning that having taken six points from a possible 15 and they find themselves 12th in the table, as per the division’s official website.

The Magpies, however, did enjoy their first game in the Champions League, securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw against AC Milan at San Siro Stadium on Tuesday night, and the opportunity to play under the lights at the highest level is something that could appeal to one of the club’s targets in particular.

According to Spanish reports, PIF are plotting a swoop for West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta in January following his failed £80m move to Manchester City over the summer, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that chiefs wanted him back in May, but at the time, decided to instead prioritise a deal for Sandro Tonali.

Are Newcastle signing Lucas Paqueta?

Speaking to Football Insider, TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor was asked whether Paqueta would choose to join Newcastle over some of their biggest rivals in the Premier League should he leave David Moyes' side in 2024, to which he replied:

Of course. They’ve got a project now, and they’ve got the richest owners in the world. The ambition is to play Champions League football every season, and that will attract Paqueta – playing in the big boy competition.

"I think Paqueta would go to Newcastle, Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool – these big clubs have a bigger chance of finishing in the top four.

“The Man City move might not have happened but I think he’d choose Newcastle. He knows there is a good Brazilian contingent at the club already in Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. I think it’s a move he would seriously look at.”

West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

What age is Lucas Paqueta?

Paqueta is currently 26 years of age so is in the real prime years of his career, and with the positive impact that he has at both ends of the pitch, he has been dubbed a “mind-boggling” player by his former teammate Declan Rice at West Ham.

The Brazil international, who is naturally an attacking midfielder, has posted 14 contributions (eight assists and six goals) in 46 appearances at the London Stadium, but he is also a rock in defence, where he currently ranks in the 99th percentile for tackles and the 97th percentile for clearances by midfielders, via FBRef (prior to the game vs TSC on Thursday).

Moyes’ left-footed ace, who pockets £150k-per-week, has even already had a taste of success having been crowned Europa Conference League winner during the 2022/23 season, but he would have the perfect chance to step up to the next level and really test himself should he decide to put pen to paper at Newcastle.

Tottenham: Postecoglou Could Form "Dangerous" Duo In £50m Swoop

Tottenham Hotspur continue to push for one final big signing, with the latest news posing an exciting prospect with just days until the window slams shut…

Who will Tottenham Hotspur sign?

As deadline day fast approaches, much of Ange Postecoglou's summer business has already been lauded given their fine start to the Premier League season.

However, with the Harry Kane money still untouched, it remains a sore spot for fans, who see it as another classic example of Daniel Levy's frugality and unwillingness to reinvest the club's funds.

That notion could be set to change though, with Fabrizio Romano having since issued a promising update regarding their continued pursuit of Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

The Italian journalist wrote on Twitter:

"Brentford have currently left conversations for Brennan Johnson focusing on different targets, Tottenham are prepared to insist in talks with Forest. #THFC Spurs already held positive talks on player side and now discussions taking place on clubs side."

It is expected that the Tricky Trees are holding out for £50m to sanction his exit.

How good is Brennan Johnson?

With that aforementioned fine start to the league campaign already making the Lilywhites once again seem like an enthralling option for players, their 22-year-old target would likely thrive under the new conditions slowly being enforced in north London.

Boasting an all-action philosophy that has already started to emerge, what Postecoglou demands from his attackers is unrelenting hard work to pair with their immense firepower.

He outlined this earlier in August when speaking on Richarlison:

"He is someone who has got all of the attributes that I look for in a striker, in that he has got the strong work ethic, he is always in the right areas and he is presenting himself and making a presence of himself in the right areas for the way we play."

Already this is seen through Heung-min Son, with the South Korean having also been lauded by his 58-year-old boss for his application and leadership:

"He’s an outstanding player. Especially the way I like teams to play with wingers who are a goal threat, he’s elite. He’s as good as anyone because he has that ability to play wide and play one on one. The fact that he scores goals is just priceless.

"He’s another one that I think shows real leadership qualities. I look at him and he’s pretty much a conduit for the whole squad. He mixes in all groups. I don’t think it’s just because he’s popular."

Now, Johnson could seek to be the latest to earn praise for such efforts, with the quality and work ethic to thrive under these conditions.

After all, he did score eight and assist three in the league last term for a side that narrowly avoided the drop, and when compared against other forwards across Europe he sits in the top 8% for progressive carries per 90, the top 12% for tackles per 90 and the top 21% for blocks per 90, via FBref.

He is a constant threat and consistent thorn in the side of opposition defenders, given how he harrasses them, and with him and Son working in tangent to forge chances for one another, they could swiftly form a pretty devastating combination – especially given how prolific the 31-year-old has been during his time at the club, hitting double figures for goals in every Premier League season apart from his first.

brennan-johnson-3

With the experienced ace cutting in from the left onto his lethal right foot, and Johnson offering a more orthodox option on the opposite flank, the combinations could be deadly.

In fact, pundit and former Arsenal star Ian Wright has even sought to praise the prospect of the touted new signing, speaking for Premier League Productions (28/08/23 at 2:40 pm):

"I have seen them linked with Brennan Johnson. That midfield, with Bissouma, Sarr, Bentancur and Maddison, in and around there, then with Richarlison up front.

“If you can get a Brennan Johnson – then you are looking at a Tottenham team that’s starting to cause a lot of problems. If they can bring in another winger like a Brennan Johnson, who is very exciting.

"He would be a perfect Tottenham player. I could totally see it, just like I see it with Maddison, then I would start to see the Tottenham, in their final form, look very, very dangerous.”

With Son a perfect role model and Johnson only set to grow, pairing them together would be the perfect blend of exceptional experience and youthful fearlessness, surely set to conquer the league under big Ange.

Vinay Kumar hat-trick as Karnataka dominate Mumbai

Vinay Kumar finished with 6 for 34 to blow Mumbai away for 173 on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy quarter-final in Nagpur

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Dec-20170:43

Quickinfo – Vinay, Karnataka’s hat-trick hero

ScorecardVinay Kumar took 6 for 34, including a hat-trick, to blow Mumbai away for 173 on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy quarter-final in Nagpur. Invigorated by their captain’s display, Karnataka’s batsmen responded with a strong start to end the day on 115 for 1 and put them within striking distance of the first-innings lead.In the morning, with the game only a few minutes old, Vinay set a few records tumbling. He dismissed in-form opener Prithvi Shaw off the last ball of the first over, after the batsman tried to punch one off the backfoot and away from his body. The ball shaped away enough to catch the outside edge for Karun Nair to snaffle the chance at first slip. Nair teamed up with Vinay again in the first ball of the third over when Jay Bista attempted a similar shot to Shaw’s. This time Nair plucked a one-handed catch to leave Mumbai 7 for 2. Vinay completed the second hat-trick of his career after fast bowler Akash Parkar, promoted to the top of the order, was trapped in front to an inswinger. Vinay became the sixth bowler, and the first captain, to take a hat-trick in the knockouts of the Ranji Trophy.

Karnataka’s seamers continued to bore into Mumbai’s batting order. Vinay struck again to have Siddhesh Lad caught behind before S Aravind and Abhimanyu Mithun took over to send back vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav and captain Aditya Tare cheaply. Mumbai were 49 for 6 and slipped to 95 for 8 as Vinay broke Akhil Herwadkar’s resistance (32 off 75 balls).Vinay went on to have Karsh Kothari caught behind for Gautam’s third catch and Mumbai, at 103 for 9, were in danger of embarrassing themselves before Dhawal Kulkarni bailed them out with a 132-ball 75, including nine fours and two sixes. Kulkarni effectively played lone ranger in his 70-run last wicket stand with Shivam Malhotra, who resisted 41 balls for seven runs, before Aravind removed him. In reply, Karnataka’s openers R Samarth (40) and Mayank Agarwal (62*) put on 83 before the former was cleaned up by seamer Shivam Dubey.

'Shane Bond surgery' an option for Pattinson

James Pattinson may soon be flying to New Zealand for surgery unprecedented in Australian cricket history – the same procedure that helped extend the career of the former New Zealand spearhead Shane Bond, which has also been undertaken by Matt Henry. In the weeks since the 27-year-old Pattinson’s most recent breakdown with the beginnings of a back stress fracture, the fourth such time he has been diagnosed with the injury in more or less exactly the same spot in his back, Cricket Australia’s medical team has looked exhaustively at options to end a sad saga of rehabilitation, brief international appearances and then re-injury.What they are in the closing stages of settling upon – some further tests on Pattinson remain to be done – is surgery to provide a protective covering on the part of the back that has been constantly re-injured. Alex Kountouris, CA’s head of sports science, explained that the re-injuries were likely to be related to the fact that Pattinson has four old stress fractures from his youth.”He has got four old stress fractures that haven’t healed since his teenage years. What he’s doing is getting bone stress on one part of a healthy bone and that one part of the bone keeps breaking. It has broken four times in the one spot [since 2013],” Kountouris said in Sydney on Tuesday. “He has broken it in the same spot again, that’s the bad thing. Once you heal from a fracture it shouldn’t break in the same place. It should become stronger than it ever was before. The fact he is going in the same place means there is a lot of stress in that one area.”We’ve obviously reviewed this to death… looking at how much he bowled, all the technical stuff, there is a whole bunch of stuff we’re looking at. We’re hoping to learn from some of the things that have happened and what he can cope with and what we can’t cope with. He wants to play Test cricket and he’s obviously a very good Test bowler, so our goal is to get him back to Test cricket.”He has been great. We’ve engaged him in these conversations with the specialists in New Zealand and stuff like that. We’ve had meetings, we’re discussing all the options. We haven’t 100% confirmed we’re going to do this, but we’re certainly a long way down the track of looking at it. And if anyone’s going to have this surgery, it’ll be him. It doesn’t sound like there is a lot to lose to be honest. It’s going to help that area. There are some complications that could possibly happen with any sort of surgery, but I think that’s the way we are probably going to go, give him every chance.”Richard Saw, who replaced Peter Bruckner as the Australian team doctor earlier this year, said that CA had been moved to look towards surgical options for Pattinson after numerous failed attempts to bring him back to full fitness without the need for the physical trauma of an operation.”We’re looking into some other things for James including exploring surgical options and, because in Australian cricket we get stress fractures to heal with a conservative treatment, it’s not something which has been pursued often,” Dr Saw said. “As a doctor speaking, it’s always better to do things without surgery than with surgery because there are some inherent risks from any operation. But we are exploring surgical options for James because of the complexity of his case.Getty Images

“That’s included looking into having some conversations with surgeons overseas, in particular there is a surgeon in New Zealand who has operated on a few of the New Zealand fast bowlers including Shane Bond, who came back to play Test cricket, and Matt Henry, who is playing at the moment. The reason why we’re exploring international options is because some of those surgeons are a bit more experienced with fast bowlers and have got them back to playing at the elite level.”There are different surgical techniques, which is part of what we’re looking into. But basically using things like screws and wires to stabilise the fracture. One [of the techniques] does involve putting a screw through it but there is another way which involves supporting the ring of the vertebrae. We’re still nutting out some of the finer detail but it’s not far away. In the next couple of weeks we’ll have a firm decision on this.”Taking Pattinson to New Zealand was geared at putting him in the hands of a surgeon who had done the procedure with fast bowlers before, rather than a first-timer in Australia. Kountouris said: “There’s a lot of people in Australia who do this surgery, it’s reasonably common, but none of them have done any fast bowlers that have come back to the elite level.”We don’t know how they’re going to cope with bowling at 150kph: all that force. It’s easy to do [the general] public, who would go back to their normal job and play a bit of recreational sport, but we want someone who has got experience in this [professional sportsperson] area.”In addition to Bond and Henry, the procedure has also been carried out on Andrew Ellis and Hamish Bennett among New Zealand fast bowlers. Bennett played for New Zealand earlier this year and took five wickets in his most recent first-class appearance for Wellington last week. Ellis, meanwhile, made the last of his 20 ODI and Twenty20 appearances for New Zealand in 2013 but has continued playing first-class matches and was last summer named the domestic cricketer of the year.CA’s medical staff also spoke on Tuesday about their hopes for Pat Cummins, who if he plays all five Ashes Tests this summer will have doubled the number of Test matches he has played in his career. Kountouris compared Cummins favourably to Ryan Harris, who entered the 2013-14 Ashes summer with a chronic knee problem but was able to take part in all five Tests in Australia then another three in South Africa as Michael Clarke’s team clinched both series.Australian success and matches not going the full five-day duration will naturally help Cummins’ cause. “Our goal is to get them to the first Test and there’s no set goal beyond that. Harris was going in [in 2013-14] with an injury so we knew there was something wrong with him,” Kountouris said. “Pat, there’s nothing wrong with him, we just know that in this series if he plays all five Tests he has doubled the amount of matches he has played in his Test career. So it’s uncharted territory for him.”Until March he’d played one Test in [over five] years. We want him to play all five, that’s our goal, and we want to win the series, so getting him to the first game, prepared to play the first game and to play the whole series, is our goal right now. If the first game is over in three days it’s easier, but if he bowls 60 overs in the first game and pulls up sore, further down the road we’ll work that out.”

Indrajith double-ton headlines batting-friendly day

B Indrajith struck his maiden first-class double-hundred as he added 92 runs to the overnight score alongside No. 11 Vijay Gohil (34*) to help India Red post a competitive 383 in the first innings. The pair’s partnership of 178 was also the highest tenth-wicket partnership in the tournament’s history.Bowlers from either side could manage only four wickets all day. Half-centuries from Hanuma Vihari and Suresh Raina reduced India Blue’s deficit to 167 runs at stumps. The day started with India Red on 291 for 9. Indrajith overtook his previous best of 151 and his 280-ball knock consisted of 20 fours and six sixes while the No. 11 Gohil hung around to add 12 runs to his overnight score. Indrajith was out in the 109th over of the innings after offspinner Bhargav Bhatt had him caught by Manoj Tiwary. In reply, India Blue openers Samit Gohel (32) and Vihari added 47 for the first wicket before the former edged one to the keeper. Basil Thampi removed Manoj Tiwary (20) soon after. India Blue captain Raina then scored his 43rd first-class fifty as he stabilise the innings alongside Vihari. Their 73-run third-wicket stand was broken by Gohil. Deepak Hooda (23*) and Vihari saw the day off with an unbroken stand of 57.

India A finished the third day of the first unofficial Test against South Africa floundering in their pursuit of 447. They go into the fourth day with only four wickets in hand and another 255 runs to get.A spurt of quick wickets early in their chase – they lost three wickets between the 13th and 16th overs for six runs – accounted for India A’s top order and dented their chances of salvaging a draw. Karun Nair, Ankit Bawne and Ishan Kishan then went on to get starts, all making at least 30, but could not carry on and play a substantial innings. Bawne put together 46, before falling in the last over of the day, while Kishan slammed 39 off 32 balls but fell after adding 49 runs for the fifth wicket with Bawne. The South Africa A quicks, Junior Dala and Andile Phehlukwayo, took two wickets each.South Africa A resumedat 66 for 0 on the third day and lost Stephen Cook early. However, Aiden Markram and Rudi Second struck half-centuries to push their first-innings lead of 226 to 446, before the declaration. Markram’s 120-ball 79 included seven fours and three sixes while Second struck 74 off 109 deliveries.
