Villa’s predicted line-up vs Liverpool

After seeing off relegation-battling Fulham last weekend, Aston Villa return to Premier League action when they take on champions Liverpool at Anfield this afternoon.

Dean Smith’s side had to come from behind to beat the Cottagers at Villa Park, with goals from Trezeguet and Ollie Watkins sparking a second-half comeback.

While a trip to the reigning champions may sound like a daunting prospect, Villa will have fond memories of the last time they played Liverpool in the league, a 7-2 drubbing which saw Ollie Watkins grab a hat-trick.

Aside from Jack Grealish’s continued absence, Smith doesn’t have too many injury concerns with which to contend, but might opt to make a couple of key changes considering how the game against Fulham panned out.

With that in mind, below is a look at how Villa might line up against Liverpool.

In goal, Emiliano Martinez will be looking to keep a clean sheet after going three Premier League games without one, while the back four should also remain unchanged.

The midfield could see January signing Morgan Sanson drop out of the starting line-up, with John McGinn coming back in alongside Douglas Luiz.

After bagging a brace against Scott Parker’s side last week, Trezeguet has surely done enough to warrant a place in the first team, and he could replace Anwar El Ghazi just like he did at Villa Park six days ago.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-aston-villa-transfer-rumours-and-news-copy-copy” title=”Latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news”]

The other big change could see the rarely-seen Keinan Davis start up front alongside Ollie Watkins in a slight tweak in formation, with the 23-year-old – who has played just 103 minutes of Premier League football this season – having sent an emphatic message to his manager with a superb cameo against Fulham.

It would certainly be a big call to go with two up top against a team like Liverpool, but it could well be the kind of tactical surprise which catches out Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Predicted XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Traore, Luiz, McGinn, Trezeguet; Watkins, Davis.

Meanwhile, Dean Smith must start this “unbelievable” star vs Liverpool today…

Cooper can relax after Ayew injury update

Swansea City looked to have suffered a huge injury blow during the international break after footage emerged of Andre Ayew limping off after Ghana’s 3-1 win over Sao Tome and Principe at the weekend, however, the 31-year-old has now eased fears over his injury problems.

Journalist Gary Al-Smith had left Swansea fans concerned when he posted footage of the striker limping off after Ghana’s win at the weekend, with his leg heavily bandaged and him requiring the assistance of two medical staff members in order to make his way off the pitch.

However, the former West Ham man has since eased worries about his potential injury, confirming after the game that:

“It’s a knock. The doctors have seen. I can put my leg on the floor. There won’t be any issue.”

Cooper will therefore be massively relieved that his top scorer should be available after the international break, as there will have understandably been some concerns about his fitness after he picked up the injury.

Ayew, who is currently rated at £3.6 million by Transfermarkt, has been one of Swansea’s best performers in the Championship so far this season, contributing 14 goals and two assists in 36 league appearances, which has helped him average an impressive 7.20 rating.

This ranks him as their best performer of those who have made at least five appearances this season, whilst he is also comfortably the top scorer in Cooper’s side, with Jamal Lowe second with just nine Championship goals so far this campaign.

Speaking earlier in the season, the 41-year-old manager was full of praise for Ayew, saying:

“Andre is a leader, regardless of whether or not he wears the armband. He always stands up and leads by example. He’s a massive influence at this club.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“532484″]

Therefore, he will undoubtedly be delighted with this latest update on Ayew’s injury and will be hoping that he can continue his strong recent form for the remainder of the Championship season, with the Swans still in with a chance of securing an automatic promotion.

Why Lukaku would be a good signing for MCFC

Manchester City have been credited with an interest in Romelu Lukaku in recent months and after another superb performance in Inter’s 3-0 win against Genoa at the weekend, the Belgian international has well and truly shown Pep Guardiola what he is capable of.

The powerful striker left Manchester United in the summer of 2019 after struggling with the Red Devils and has excelled in his time in Italy, contributing 58 goals and 12 assists in 82 appearances for I Nerazzurri.

This season in particular has seen the 27-year-old impress, as he now has 18 goals and six assists in 23 Serie A appearances, which has seen him average an outstanding 7.64 average rating.

Sunday’s performance against Genoa summed up Lukaku’s current form as he was a constant thorn in Davide Ballardini’s side’s side, both with his attacking and creative play.

As per SofaScore, the Belgian international would earn an 8.4 match rating for his display – which was the best of any player on the pitch.

Lukaku opened the scoring within 60 seconds, driving at the Genoa defence with incredible speed before finding the bottom corner with his weaker right foot.

The striker would then provide the assist for Matteo Darmian’s goal in the second half before his saved shot was nodded in by Alexis Sanchez on the rebound, so he had a big part to play in all three goals.

The former Chelsea man would register five shots on target against Genoa, which emphasises how dangerous he is in front of goal, but he would also play as many as four key passes, which shows how good his link-up play can be.

Therefore, based on his performance at the weekend and his superb campaign overall, it seems fair to suggest that the £81 million-rated striker would be an excellent addition to this Manchester City side, and would undoubtedly score a lot of goals if he were to make the switch to the Etihad this summer.

And, in other news… Txiki should swoop for £19.8m-rated striker much more clinical than Gabriel Jesus

'The time is definitely right' – Marcus Trescothick on the end of his playing days

The Somerset and England opener may be best remembered for his contribution to the cause of mental health in sport

George Dobell at Taunton23-Sep-2019The tower of St James’ church still overlooks a corner of the ground, the Quantocks still loom in the distance, but the county ground at Taunton will never be quite the same. For the first time in almost 30 years, there will be no Marcus Trescothick in team photos next season. Well, not as a player anyway. After 40,000 runs and 96 centuries across formats, he has decided, aged 43, that the time has come to move on.Trescothick has, by any standards, enjoyed a wonderful career. The ICC’s historic rankings suggest he was, in mid-2003, rated the best ODI batsman in the world. And while he never quite reached those heights in Test cricket, a career-best rating of No. 6 and an average of 43.79 bears testament to a fine player. He once took a first-class hat-trick, which included the wicket of Adam Gilchrist (for Somerset against Young Australia in 1995), and played five of his 123 ODIs for England as their wicketkeeper. He rates the 2005 Ashes as a high point, and while he never managed a Test century against Australia, his 431 runs in that series – only Kevin Pietersen managed more for either side – played a huge role in England’s eventual success. His 90 at Edgbaston, a rollicking affair that ended 20 minutes after lunch on the first day, may have been the turning point of the summer.ESPNcricinfo LtdThere were other highlights. His maiden Test century, in Galle in 2001, came in an innings when only one other man in the top seven made 20, and against Muttiah Muralitharan at his best. He could play pace too, as 193 against Shoaib Akhtar at his quickest, at Multan in 2005, proved. And if there were times his footwork rendered him vulnerable outside off stump, there were many more times when bowlers spent long hours searching for that edge and finding only that booming cover drive. On flat pitches, such as at The Oval in 2003, his bat looked as wide as a barn door. His 219 was masterful. But lots of players score mountains of runs or take huge hauls of wickets. To understand Trescothick’s true significance, you probably have to know the story of Harold Gimblett. For like Trescothick, Gimblett was a wonderfully talented local batsman whose strokeplay endeared him to spectators and selectors alike. And like Trescothick, Gimblett accumulated vast numbers of runs in the relative calm of county cricket but looked increasingly uncomfortable in the glare of the international game.ALSO READ: Coming back to Trescothick (2016)Gimblett remains the only man to have scored more first-class runs for Somerset; Trescothick is the only man to have scored more first-class centuries. If Trescothick isn’t the finest batsman produced by Somerset, Gimblett probably is.More pertinently, both men suffered episodes of mental torment. In both cases it probably curtailed their international careers, with Gimblett playing only three Tests and Trescothick playing none after the age of 30, when he should have been at his peak. Tragically in Gimblett’s case, those episodes also curtailed his life. He committed suicide, aged 63, in 1978.Trescothick, thankfully, found a way through the dark times. And, by sharing his story, not least in his award-winning book , helped others afflicted with the same problems find a way to deal with them. He showed people they were not alone, that they should share their concerns and that there was hope. His message was adopted by various sporting bodies – not least the PCA and the ECB – and filtered into other sports, then other professionals and then mainstream areas of society. It’s no exaggeration to suggest Trescothick saved lives. And it’s no exaggeration to suggest he changed his sport – and probably wider society – in a way very few people manage.

It’s worth thinking back to the way things were only a few years ago – when cricket used to wonder why so many former players took their own lives; when players were branded weak or spoilt if they expressed doubt or concern

If that sounds like hyperbole, it’s worth thinking back to the way things were only a few years ago. To the years when cricket used to wonder why so many former players took their own lives, to the days when players were branded weak or spoilt if they expressed doubt or concern, to the times when national media described those with mental health problems as “bonkers”. As recently as 2013-14, the partners of players on England’s Ashes tour were being told by the team management not to be afraid of telling their husbands to “grow a pair” if they expressed any concerns. At least two players of that vintage have subsequently admitted they considered harming themselves to get off the treadmill.Talking to ESPNcricinfo a couple of years ago, when he surpassed Gimblett’s number of first-class centuries for Somerset, Trescothick admitted his work in the field of mental health was probably his primary legacy.”Once I’m passed away the cricket gets forgotten quite quickly,” Trescothick said. “But hopefully I can continue in the mental health area and continue to educate people and give them hope that you can come out, talk about it and gain help without worrying about the prospect of what’s going to happen. That’s potentially what will live on a bit longer. Once we look back in ten years’ time, the work I’ve done with the mental health stuff may live on.”There was, for a while, a concern about what Trescothick would do once his playing career ended. So wrapped up in the game was he, he admitted to going to sleep wearing in his kit early in his career. And, it has been whispered, he may struggle without the sense of purpose provided by a playing career and the automatic support network provided by the dressing room. Just about every player struggles with the transition from playing. Trescothick has, at times, looked especially vulnerable.Marcus Trescothick applauds from the Marcus Trescothick Stand•Getty ImagesHe admits he shared some of those fears. But now, with the ending of his career sensitively handled by the club he has served so well, he is looking to the future with enthusiasm and confidence. He even seems a bit relieved it’s all over. And besides, with the likes of Tom Banton and George Bartlett coming through, he knows it is time to move aside.”I guess I’ve been quite scared about it [retirement] for a long period of time, but once we made the choice it was going to happen this year, I could start to plan and move on,” he said on the first day of Somerset’s final Championship match, where he was honoured with a presentation during the lunch interval.ALSO READ: Trescothick, Gimblett and the black wings of depression”I’m well and truly over playing. I’ve had enough of going out there and working out how to try to bat. It’s hard work. I’ve made that switch into coaching and that’s really helped me. There may be hard times along the way when I’m really trying to get to grips with it, but the time is definitely right.”We [Trescothick and the coaching team] were communicating all winter and at the start of the summer, knowing when it was going to be. I knew it was there. I knew it was done at that point [during a game in Guildford, and after five Championship matches had brought a highest score of 23] and then the coach Jason Kerr – who is a good mate – came to me and said, ‘Right, we’re going to give you a rest.’ Which was the right thing to do.”It wasn’t ever going to be tricky because I knew. They knew. We’d been communicating and looking after it for a long period of time. I knew it was going to be happening soon.

I’m well and truly over playing. I’ve had enough of going out there and working out how to try to bat

“The last thing you want to do is be in the way of someone who is going to have their moment. If I’d been scoring runs left right and centre, doing what was needed, then fair enough, it might have been different. But the game and the club have given me great times and I thank them for that. It’s time.”He is unlikely to be a stranger around these parts. One of his daughters, Ellie, is said to be a highly promising player, and as he puts it, “I don’t foresee moving away from the county.”While there are no firm job offers on the table right now, Trescothick has already spent time coaching at schools, at Somerset, and with the England team ahead of four Ashes Tests this summer. With his experience, both of excelling at the top of the order and dealing with the inevitable setbacks, he has a lot to offer. Combined with an affable character and an eloquence which has made him attractive to broadcasters, there seems every reason to think he will thrive in this next chapter of his career. He says he has no thoughts of playing club or national counties cricket.ALSO READ: Trescothick: ‘I’d be a pro golfer if not a cricketer’ (2016)”If I’m playing cricket and trying to eke out a few runs for someone then something’s gone drastically wrong and my career plan has not quite worked,” he said. “Hopefully something will come to fruition in coaching. It would give me a bit more direction. There is a chance of a job here at Somerset. We’ve had conversations.”A role with England could be a possibility, too. While he admits he wouldn’t relish a full tour at this stage, he is open-minded about shorter stints that he is confident could be achieved without triggering anxiety issues.”I’ve been building up to it. I went on Somerset’s pre-season this year. I wouldn’t want to jump straight into doing two months, but I could do three weeks if they wanted.”Trescothick has said he is open to short coaching stints with the England team•Getty ImagesHis first-class debut came in 1993, five years before Banton or Bartlett were born. In that game, Trescothick opened with Mark Lathwell, another batsman who seemed to have the talent but not the temperament for the biggest stage, and Andy Caddick took a career-best 9 for 32 to defeat Lancashire. Alongside those Ashes memories of 2005, he lists captaining the county he supported as a child – his dad played a few games for the 2nds – for several seasons. While trophies proved agonisingly elusive, Somerset played consistently good cricket and regularly challenged across formats. They were second in all competitions in 2010. They finished equal on points in the Championship – under previous rules they would have shared the trophy – and then missed out in the T20 competition when the final finished with the scores level but Hampshire won by virtue of having lost fewer wickets. They were runners-up in both limited-overs competitions again in 2011. Given how the Somerset side of the late ’70s and early ’80s tended to struggle in the Championship, you could argue that the Trescothick period was the best in the club’s history.Throughout it all, Trescothick accumulated runs with a regularity and dominance matched in recent times only by the likes of Mark Ramprakash and Graeme Hick. And, well into his 40s and easily his side’s senior player, he could still be seen crouching at short leg – the position generally reserved for the youngest player in the side. He very obviously loved playing and the supporters, recognising that, loved him right back. And maybe, in contrast to his dominance at the crease, they sensed the need to protect him a little too. It’s doubtful a more popular man has ever represented the club.

Given how the Somerset side of the late ’70s and early ’80s tended to struggle in the Championship, you could argue that the Trescothick period was the best in the club’s history

“I really enjoyed my time as captain from 2010 to 2015,” he said. “Although we didn’t get over the line, being leader of the team of the club and guiding the youngsters is a nice place to be. The club really changed at the end of 2006. We brought in different people – the likes of Brian Rose, Andy Hurry and Justin Langer – and over the next 10-12 years we’ve been very strong in all competitions.”You look back on photos and see how fresh-faced you were. And you hear the stats [many were read out at the presentation] and think what you used to be able to do. It’s incredible. I’ve been blessed.”Indeed, he has. And while it may remain a source of regret that he was not able to play for longer at the highest level, he may reflect that from the rubble of his own breakdown came the foundations for a new start. Yes, Trescothick helped England win an Ashes series. But more than that, Trescothick helped make cricket a wiser and kinder sport. It’s hard to imagine a sportsperson can achieve more than that.

Kohli's trigger movement negates Australia's plans

From Steven Smith’s field to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s set-up, Aakash Chopra analyses play in the second ODI in Kolkata

Aakash Chopra21-Sep-20174:00

Agarkar: Bhuvneshwar on top of his game

The case of the missing gully
Ajinkya Rahane’s early runs usually come in the form of dabs through the third-man region. It’s intriguing that the Australians haven’t really noticed this. They were happy to place only a couple of slips against him to begin with, and later a token fielder at fourth slip for a few balls. While they keep bowling the sixth-seventh stump line throughout, the reluctance to place a fielder at gully for the entire duration of Rahane’s innings against pace was interesting to note.Wide? Go close
Before this game, Virat Kohli had only 46 runs against Australia in six innings this year. Three times in those six innings he got out driving the full and wide ball early in his innings. Today, Australia laid the same trap again. This time Kohli stood on middle stump and his trigger movement took him onto the off. There are only two ways to handle balls that are too wide – leave them alone or get closer to them. Here, Kohli chose the latter. But once he got set and Smith opted for a 5-4 off-side field, Kohli stopped walking across. So much so, that he eliminated his trigger movement completely from time to time. He started staying inside the line a lot to work the ball on both sides of the pitch. What works in Chennai doesn’t in Kolkata
Just like they did in Chennai, the Australian bowlers bowled the short-pitched deliveries a fair way outside off. In Chennai they dismissed both Rohit Sharma and Kedar Jadhav with this tactic, but in Kolkata the same ploy didn’t work against Kohli. Both Rohit and Jadhav tried to drag the ball from outside off and were dismissed in the process in Chennai. Kohli hit the same balls through the mid-on and midwicket regions; had he tried to drag them square, he might have got out in the same fashion.Two-over spells
Spell break-ups

Pat Cummins 4-2-3-1

Kane Richardson 4-2-2-2

Nathan Coulter-Nile 4-2-2-2

Today, Steven Smith’s utilisation of his bowling resources was spot on. While some of it was definitely dictated by the Kolkata heat and humidity, he must be given credit for rotating his bowlers nicely. Barring the first slightly long spell, he used them in two-over busts and mostly used them as wicket-taking options. He didn’t shy away from giving them slip fielders too. The overriding theme of his bowling changes and field positioning was the attempt to take wickets.Bhuvneshwar’s trick against Cartwright
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s control over his wrist was impeccable with the new ball. The first over he bowled had one ball going away and the next coming in. He continued this pattern over six balls. For the ball that dismissed Cartwright he went to the corner of the popping crease. While the change in angle might have led the batsman to expect an inswinger, he bowled an outswinger. While the angle prevented the ball from swinging away prodigiously, it moved enough to force the batsman to play outside the line, which resulted in a huge gap between bat and pad. He was castled.Kuldeep Yadav became only the third Indian to take an ODI hat-trickMaxwell and the high-risk play
Glenn Maxwell opened his account with a six and followed it with another six. Maxwell’s ability to hit sixes is exceptional, which to some extent shows his comfort against spin. Since he has also scored a Test ton in India, it’s only fair to assume that he has other gears too. Still, he chooses to play a high-risk game irrespective of the circumstances. He’s a match-winner when he’s in a team full of match-winners, but can appear average otherwise. He needs to unravel a new style if Australia are to stage a comeback in this series.Kuldeep Yadav’s valueIt wasn’t easy to bowl wristspin because the ball was quite wet. Kuldeep wasn’t having a great day either till Wade chopped an innocuous ball back onto the stumps. While the talk is mostly about his mystery and how it’s making it difficult to pick him, we must not forget that it’s not just the variations that he brings to the table. Variations, sooner or later, will be found out, but the fact that he bowls a lot fuller will hold him in good stead. Pitching fuller will leak a few runs once in a while but that will also keep presenting him with chances to pick up wickets.

Cracking the T20 code, and redressal of the bat-ball balance

ESPNcricinfo looks back at some of the defining talking points from the 2016 Asia Cup

Alagappan Muthu and Mohammad Isam08-Mar-2016Bangladesh turn T20 cornerIt took them more than eight years to figure out the format, but it seems Bangladesh has now cracked T20s. They have an attacking top three, an aggressive middle-order and a bowling attack that is starting to withstand hard-hitting batting line-ups. The pace attack has figured out where to bowl in the slog overs and they always have spinners in reserve. What Bangladesh is still lacking is a clutch hitter although Mahmudullah, Nurul Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza have been doing the job, to an extent. Their next target, in the World T20, should be to use their strengths to keep the consistency going. It took them years to do that in ODIs but that experience should help hasten it in T20s.Alarm bells for Sri LankaSri Lanka’s nervy batting against the UAE should have been a warning as Sri Lanka lurched from one poor performance to the next in three games against Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Their only good performance was in the last game, a dead rubber against Pakistan, in which Tillakaratne Dilshan scored half of their 150 runs. Lasith Malinga’s absence as lead bowler and captain made it difficult, but the likes of Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath failed to threaten any of the batting line-ups. They had to make use of three captains in four games.Dinesh Chandimal batted well but couldn’t impose himself while newcomers like Dushmantha Chameera, Dasun Shanaka or Milinda Siriwardana couldn’t really get going with bat or ball. With concern increasing after losing experienced hands, Mathews, Chandimal and Dilshan have their work cut out.Pitch perfectIt may have been inadvertent, but keeping a little grass on the pitch in Mirpur invigorated the Asia Cup. A tournament that was largely seen as the usher to the World T20 began bossing the headlines. UAE had a chance to upset Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan played an enthralling game despite the target being only 84 and even when batting became easier as the tournament wore on, 130 still needed some nerveless chasing from Bangladesh. With loads of cricket played at Shere Bangla stadium, right from the Under-19 World Cup in February, the idea behind the grass cover had been to keep the pitches from deteriorating too fast. A healthy side effect was that the batsmen had to be clever to get their runs and bowlers knew they had a chance if they kept at it on a good length. In other words, the balance between bat and ball was brought back.Spinning out of the spotlightBangladesh began the tournament with four fast bowlers. MS Dhoni kept R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja back as fifth and sixth change bowlers against Pakistan. Even at the tail end, when the pitches got dryer and barer, life for the spinners didn’t get any better. At the end of it all, they had only 34 wickets. The fast bowlers had 92.Associates flavourThe qualifiers were a treat as well. And they threw up a few names to look out for. Babar Hayat struck the only century of the tournament – he could have taken Hong Kong across the line on his own steam. Left-arm spinner Aamir Kaleem pulled off a mankad to turn that game before rookie left-arm seamer Bilal Khan closed it out. UAE’s bowlers had their share of the spotlight, foremost among them being the captain Amjad Javed and fast bowler Mohammad Naveed. Afghanistan were a bit of a disappointment though. They won two out of three games, but the one loss – to UAE – caught them off guard.
