Chris Cowdrey, the former England captain, is recovering after suffering a heart attack last week while visiting a hospital to have stitches in his knee

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Sep-2011Chris Cowdrey, the former England captain, is recovering after suffering a heart attack last week while visiting a hospital to have stitches in his knee.Cowdrey, 53, played six Tests and led his country once during the 1988 season against West Indies, along with three one-day internationals, and had a 16-year career with Kent.”People always said I was lucky player – well if you’re going to have a heart attack anywhere, then the middle of a hospital is probably it,” Cowdrey said in a statement issued through the Professional Cricketers’ Association. “I only went there to have three stitches in my knee. I suppose this is all about doing too much of what I shouldn’t have been doing and not enough of what I should have been doing for the last 30 years.”I hate letting people down, pulling out of dinners and speaking engagements is not my style but I hope everyone will understand that my priority is getting back to full health and that I have to take it easy.”

Whirlwind Trego inspires Somerset

ScorecardPeter Trego and Craig Kieswetter shone with the bat as Somerset won their third match in the Clydesdale Bank 40 League when they beat Glamorgan in a rain-affected game at Taunton. The hosts amassed 222 for 2 from 27 overs before rain stopped play – and when the game restarted at 6.15pm the visitors were chasing a revised total of 196 to win off 19 overs. They came close but fell short on 185 for 6, giving Somerset victory by 10 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method. After opting to bat first Somerset lost Marcus Trescothick in the third over, caught for 6 by wicketkeeper Mark Wallace off James Harris. New batsman Trego was quickly into his stride and took 28 off the seventh over of the innings, bowled by Will Owen. It contained four fours and two sixes, one straight drive onto the roof of the Old Pavilion and the other over midwicket.Trego took just 20 deliveries to reach his half-century, hitting the milestone with a single off Robert Croft. Kieswetter accumulated his runs more steadily and brought up the Somerset 100 with a single off Dean Cosker in the 12th over. However, in the next he hoisted Croft over midwicket and the wicketkeeper went to his 50 with a dabbed single through gully in the 17th over. Trego moved to 99 with a six high into the Somerset Stand off Graham Wagg and next ball but one he took a single through mid-on to bring up his 100, which came off 58 balls and included eight fours and six sixes. However, Trego’s contribution was over with the next delivery, when he lofted Harris to Gareth Rees at square leg – ending a second wicket partnership which added 174 in exactly 20 overs. Kieswetter then started to open his shoulders, flaying Wagg to the cover boundary before bringing up the 200 with a single off the next ball of the 24th over.Rain had threatened from the start and eventually started to fall heavily, forcing the players off at the end of the 27th over with Somerset on 222 for 2, Kieswetter on 95 not out and Buttler unbeaten on 10. It proved to be the end of the hosts’ innings.Rees and Alviro Petersen got the Glamorgan reply off to a flying start and put on 48 for the opening wicket. The stand was broken in the fifth over when Rees hit the ball to cover and the pair went for a quick single – but Petersen was run out for 15 thanks to a sharp piece of fielding by Arul Suppiah.Jim Allenby brought up the 50 with a four to third man off Ajantha Mendis’ first ball and next over hit the first six of the reply when he lofted Trego high over midwicket. Opening bowler Adam Dibble changed ends and immediately reaped success when Rees, on 37, edged his first delivery to Kieswetter.Allenby brought the 100 up with a six over long-on off Mendis, leaving Glamorgan needing 94 runs for victory off eight overs. Lewis Gregory returned at the River End and with his first ball accounted for Allenby, caught by substitute fielder Alex Barrow at long off for 41 off 22 balls.Four balls later the 18-year-old had O’Shea leg before wicket for 25 and Glamorgan found themselves 122 for four. The game was evenly poised going into the last five overs with Glamorgan still needing 64 for victory, with six wickets remaining.New batsman Wagg quickly moved onto 20, including three consecutive boundaries off Trego, before Steve Kirby comprehensively bowled him. Mark Wallace cut Kirby to the square boundary to bring up the 150 in the 16th over, leaving the visitors still requiring 44 off three overs.Twenty came off the 17th over, bowled by Trego – including a six over midwicket – meaning Glamorgan needed two runs a ball. As the pressure mounted Wallace was caught by Nick Compton at deep square-leg off Kirby for 10 from the first ball of the 18th over. Going into the final over, bowled by Gregory, Glamorgan needed 17 for victory – and the task proved beyond them, despite Ben Wright’s enterprising 28 off 18 calls.

After all the questions, finally South Africa play

ESPNcricinfo previews the World Cup, Group B match between South Africa and West Indies at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi

The Preview by Firdose Moonda23-Feb-2011Match factsFebruary 24, Delhi
Start time 14:30 local time (09:00 GMT)The specks of green on the Kotla pitch may help Lonwabo TsotsobeBig PictureIt’s been exactly a month since South Africa last played an ODI and almost every minute of the days spent between their victory over India in Centurion and this moment has been consumed with how they will approach the World Cup. Questions have floated in the air about every possible aspect of South Africa’s squad and strategy. Even after they have been answered, they’ve managed to find a mouth-to-mouth way of being resuscitated and asked again, in a slightly different way.How many spinners will they play? Will the middle order prove strong enough? Can the quicks do the job in the subcontinent? How much is expected of a squad with 11 World Cup debutants? Will they choke again? After all that, it’s no wonder that South Africa are itching to get onto the field as soon as possible so that the cricket can start and the questions can end, or at least change. Even though South Africa have talked down the pressure, the truth is it has gone nowhere. After five failed attempts to raise the World Cup with five squads more than capable of raising it, patience is running out. The match against the West Indies on Thursday is not so much about the opposition as it is about starting the campaign with the kind of intent that will tell their critics and fans how serious they are about doing the business this time. For West Indies, it’s pressure of a completely different kind. They have slipped below Bangladesh in the ODI rankings to ninth spot and this World Cup presents them with an opportunity to show that they can still be counted among the top nations in international cricket. They’ve had difficult series in the recent past, against Sri Lanka and South Africa, and give the impression of a side that may fire now and again but struggles to find consistency in prolonged series. They’re aiming for the quarter-finals and the format could well see them get there, but they will have to achieve at least three “onces” to achieve that. In personnel they have the capability, so it’s the mindset they’ll have to get right. Their match against South Africa is being touted as the first marquee one of the tournament, although England against the Netherlands rubbished that assumption. To make an impact in this one could serve them well in the coming weeks.Form guide(Most recent first for the last five completed games):
South Africa: WWLLW
West Indies: LLLLLPitch and ConditionsThe Kotla has not hosted an international since December 2009 when a dangerous pitch forced the ODI between India and Sri Lanka to be abandoned after 23 overs. It has since been re-laid under the supervision of the BCCI ground and wickets committee chairman Venkat Sundaram and ICC pitch consultant Andy Atkinson, who have said it will provide an even contest between bat and ball. There was a hint of green on the surface which could favour seam and bounce. The outfield is lush but with Delhi’s warm, clear afternoons and chilly nights, dew is likely to be a factor here.Watch out forThe last 12 months in one-day cricket have been raining runs for Hashim Amla. He has scored 1308 runs in 20 matches at an average of 72.66, but beyond the numbers his style with the bat has done the talking. Amla has gone from being a careful customer to a flamboyant flasher and has been seen going wild in the first ten overs of an innings. When he gets it right, which is most of the time, a big score is one the cards.Darren Bravo has been talked up as the next Brian Lara. The younger Bravo has only played 13 matches with a top score of 74 against Canada. He also gave a respectable enough account of himself against South Africa in May last year and if ever there was a stage big enough to show he can fill Lara’s boots, this is it.Team newsSouth Africa’s big conundrum is how many spinners they should use. On a track that shows specks of green, they may feel justified in playing their three-pronged seam attack and two frontline spinners. Given the trust they have shown in Johan Botha and the form of Robin Peterson, it’s likely that Imran Tahir will have to wait a little longer to make his international debut.South Africa (probable): 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Robin Peterson, 8 Johan Botha, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Lonwabo TsotsobeWest Indies are likely to go with only one spinner and it will probably be Sulieman Benn which means Nikita Miller will be sitting on the bench. Their pace attack will be led by Ravi Rampaul and Kemar Roach.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Devon Smith, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Sulieman BennStats and TriviaSouth Africa have beaten the West Indies in the last 11 ODIs the two sides have contested. That includes a match in the 2007 World Cup and a series both at home and in the Caribbean. The last time West Indies registered a win against South Africa was in 2006 in the Champions Trophy semi-final.West Indies have never lost a match at the Kotla. Of the seven matches they’ve played at the venue, only one was a one-dayer in 1989, where they beat India. South Africa have not played an ODI at the Kotla. The highest score and the lowest score at this ground both came in the same match. Pakistan scored 303 for 8 and bowled India out for 144. Kieron Pollard has not been dismissed in single figures against South Africa, although he only averages 24.00 against them.Quotes”Consistency-wise, they haven’t been as good as the other teams over a lengthy period of time but they have match-winners and that’s why playing them in a one-off game makes them very dangerous.”
Graeme Smith on why the West Indies can be a bogey team in a major tournament.”We want to just see West Indies go out and play like we used to do in the eighties. As long as we go and give our best the fans will be happy.”

Goal share exit update out of Spurs

According to Goal, there has been an exit update out of Tottenham Hotspur as some news emerges on loanee goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

The Lowdown: Gollini will ‘almost certainly leave’…

Reports in the last week heavily tip Tottenham’s second-choice to depart north London and head back to Serie A at the end of this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Fabio Paratici and co apparently have a €13 million (£11m) option to buy Gollini but Corriere della Sera’s print edition (via Sport Witness) say this isn’t an option for Spurs due to his lack of playing time.

As such, they now claim he will ‘almost certainly’ leave N17 and return to parent his club Atalanta in June.

Backing this update and sharing news of their own, Goal have brought a development.

The Latest: Gollini talks held…

According to their information, Serie A giants Lazio have already moved for Gollini ahead of the summer – meeting with the player’s agents and the club holding talks in ‘recent days’.

It is believed they are focused ‘above all’ on signing Tottenham’s current shot stopper who Goal also back looks certain to leave.

They claim Gollini is highly unlikely to reach the 20 appearances needed to trigger an obligation-to-buy clause in his deal and add that Spurs aren’t willing to exercise another option to buy him outright.

The Verdict: Unfortunate…

While Spurs supporters won’t be losing sleep over Gollini’s exit due to his lack of playing time, it is unfortunate that the Italian has spent so much of this season on fringes.

The former Aston Villa man hasn’t been handed many opportunities to prove himself by Antonio Conte despite his terrific form at Atalanta over the past few seasons.

Serie A football journalist Carlo Garganese lauded Gollini as a ‘big’ and ‘imposing’ shot stopper at the Gewiss Stadium but Tottenham’s faithful have hardly got to capture a glimpse of those labels.

Tottenham defender Eric Dier also called the 26-year-old ‘amazing’ whilst praising his energy in Hotspur Way training, leaving some to maybe wonder why Conte has never given his compatriot the opportunity to impress more regularly.

Keane, Kenny & Holgate Everton worst

Everton suffered a cruel 1-0 defeat at home to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday evening thanks to a late Phil Foden goal.

A couple of deflections took the ball into his path before he slotted past Jordan Pickford from close range, which ended up being the winning goal after a VAR check for a handball from Rodri in the box controversially did not result in a penalty kick for the hosts.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-2/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It was a spirited performance from Frank Lampard’s men, although in truth some players were better than others on the night. The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst performers were for the home side at Goodison Park:

Mason Holgate (6.4)

With a 6.4 overall rating given, Holgate ranked as the Toffees’ third-worst player.

The defender could not stop the cross coming in from City’s flank for the goal, and in general he struggled at times, albeit against world-class opposition.

He lost out on three of his duels in total and also failed to block any shots, while he was dribbled past twice and ended up losing possession 12 times.

Jonjoe Kenny (6.2)

Admittedly joint-worst in terms of rating among Everton players (6.2), Kenny ranks in second here as he personally did not make any individual errors.

However, the 24-year-old was guilty of losing four duels, while he also made no dribbles, interceptions, key passes, crosses or accurate long balls in the match. Kenny was also dribbled past twice and gave the ball away nine times.

Michael Keane (6.2)

Keane was also given a 6.2 rating, but he ranks as the Blues’ worst performer given his individual mistake which led to Foden’s goal.

Aside from that error, the former Burnley defender made no tackles and lost the ball nine times on what was a night to forget for him personally.

Manchester United: Talks held with Mauricio Pochettino

Manchester United have held talks with Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino, according to The Daily Star.

The Lowdown: Four-man shortlist?

The Red Devils appear to be making a head start when it comes to searching for Ralf Rangnick’s replacement in the summer.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag had ‘positive’ discussions with the United board last month, who also have Pochettino, Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique on their radar.

It now looks as if Pochettino, who doesn’t currently have an agent, has become the next target United have spoken with ahead of the club’s meeting with Leicester City this evening.

The Latest: Pochettino talks

The Daily Star shared a story on Thursday evening, revealing that the club are making rapid progress in their pursuit of a new long-term manager.

Senior United figures have spoken with Pochettino this week after talks with Ten Hag. The former Tottenham boss is keen on the Old Trafford position and has the backing from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Verdict: Two-horse race?

Although Lopetegui and Enrique have also been name-checked as potential candidates, it does feel as if it is starting to become a two-horse race between Ten Hag and Pochettino.

Pochettino has plenty of experience in the Premier League with Southampton and Spurs, however, it seems to be a matter of time until Ten Hag takes over a new side after two more approaches for the Dutchman following his initial United interview.

If United are after a completely fresh start, then perhaps the Ajax boss could be better suited, but if the Red Devils feel experience is key, then Pochettino may well be their man – only time will tell.

Spurs can find new Dembele in Wijnaldum

Tottenham Hotspur could look to secure Georginio Wijnaldum in a deal that would see Tanguy Ndombele go in the other direction…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to bring the £55m flop to Paris Saint-Germain on loan, with the ex-Liverpool star thought to be part of the discussions.

90min have since reported that the Dutch midfielder would be keen on a temporary return to the Premier League and it’s believed his representatives have made that clear to the Lilywhites’ hierarchy.

Wijnaldum nearly joined Spurs in 2016 but opted for a move to Anfield from Newcastle United instead.

The 31-year-old is now valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt after his high profile free transfer to the Ligue 1 giants during the summer.

Dembele 2.0

With a number of midfielders seemingly on the chopping block in north London – Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli could join Ndombele in departing – it makes sense to see Spurs target a new signing in the role.

Wijnaldum’s vast experience across the Premier League and Champions League would make him a very astute signing, even despite his lack of game time at the Parcs des Princes this campaign.

The midfield veteran has managed only 977 minutes in the league so far but has a winners medal in both the aforementioned competitions, where he has played in over 250 matches.

In the past, Reds supporters have likened the Holland international to that of former Spurs midfielder Mousa Dembele, due to the pair being somewhat an “unsung hero” in their respective sides at one point in the past.

Wijnaldum’s energy and athleticism make him a hard man to dispossess in the engine room, which merely draws further similarities between the pair.

“He’s an incredible person.  His energy is incredible, he has lungs for days. You can tell when he has the confidence, he’s really unbeatable and very hard to play against,” ex-Liverpool forward Ryan Babel once said of his fellow countryman.

Once dubbed a “machine” by The Athletic’s James Pearce, the box-to-box dynamo has averaged 1.7 attempted tackles, two dribbles and 0.9 key passes per 90 minutes throughout the course of his career, via WhoScored, making him a very intriguing option under Antonio Conte indeed.

Spurs could well find their new Dembele in a move for Wijnaldum this month.
