Compton fights Ashes thoughts

Nick Compton has admitted that his mind often drifts towards the Ashes as he drifts off to sleep but he is trying to keep his emotions in check even though, with just three Tests remaining before the opening match against Australia at Trent Bridge, it is inconceivable that Compton will not be facing the new ball.Compton followed his maiden Test hundred in Dunedin with an even 100 at the Basin Reserve during a second-wicket stand of 210 with Jonathan Trott. These back-to-back hundreds answered some immediate questions about whether he would be able to back-up his initial success and, barring injury, he will now begin a series where the Compton-Miller is given to one participant at the conclusion. However, Compton’s immediate concerns are more prosaic than anything so grand as England’s Ashes campaign. Firstly there is the deciding Test of this series in Auckland and then, perhaps after a short break, a return to county cricket, the arena where his career made a defining shift last year as he came within a whisker (and a wet day) of 1000 runs before the end of May.”You go to bed at night thinking about the Ashes, you might read the odd comment here and there of course,” he said. “You get full of exuberance, which is what keeps driving you. I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to play in an Ashes series, of course I do.”But having played enough, looking too far ahead doesn’t do any good. You have to make sure that you stick to the next game. After this series I go back to county cricket, I get my head down again and make sure if that time arrives, I put myself in the box seat.””I have played enough cricket now to know that that line between success and failure is quite thin and I think the more you play the more respect you have for the game, the more humility you have to have in some ways, because things can change very quickly, they can go wrong.”If the progression of the England and Australia sides continue along their current lines there will be an interesting head-to-head later this year when Compton goes up against Ed Cowan who is set to open for Australia. Both players are deep thinkers, cerebral cricketers, who have earned their chance through hard graft on the domestic circuit.Although Compton’s game did not change drastically between Dunedin and Wellington, there was more of a greater sense of belonging during his second century; a slight release of tension, more authority in his stroke play. In terms of balls faced it was a brisker hundred – 224 balls compared to 259 at University Oval – but the message from those around him, including captain Alastair Cook, has been that he should not feel the need to alter his style.”I felt slightly different in that I had some runs behind me and that always makes a difference,” he said. “I proved to myself that that process was up and running again, which I had during the summer. As any batsman you need to get on that roll, momentum is important and I had that coming in here.”But it was also important I didn’t get ahead of myself. I had to start again. You’re always on nought, as a batsman it doesn’t make any difference whether you’ve got five or six hundreds behind you. It doesn’t make it any easier but it was nice to have those runs behind me. I always set myself the stall of getting myself in. I think once you get yourself in as a batsman you’ve got a chance.”And a degree of relief? “There’s only so much talking you can do. It comes to the stage where you perhaps feel that there’s something inside there but you need to show it. It’s nice to put those markers down which say ‘there you go, there’s two hundreds’. I had a feeling I could do it but you never really know until you do it at this level. So, yes, I’m chuffed that I’ve managed to pass that test.”

Opener Vijay Zol top-scored with 69 and was ably supported by captain and wicketkeeper Rohit Motwani’s 53 and Kedar Jadhav’s 64. Lower-order batsmen Akshay Darekar and Shrikant Mundhe took the team home with five balls to spare.Opener Prashant Gupta and Suresh Raina, with their attacking knocks of 87 and 70, took Uttar Pradesh to a commanding eight-wicket victory over Rajasthan in a match shortened to 35 overs due to wet outfield in Indore. In their chase of 199, the opening stand of 69 between Gupta and Eklavya Dwivedi was broken in the 15th over, when Dwivedi was out for 27. Gupta and Raina, then, added 111 in 87 balls, with Raina smashing four sixes in his 48-ball knock. He eventually took them home in the 32nd over.Rajasthan’s innings was built on fifties from Ashok Menaria and Rajesh Bishnoi, who put on 81 runs for the third wicket. A five-ball 17 from Raman Chahar got them to 198.Railways scraped through to a one-wicket victory off the last over of their match against Madhya Pradesh. Opener Amit Paunikar scored a fifty, but they looked to be facing defeat when a collapse – four wickets for 14 runs – left them struggling at 114 for 7, needing another 58 runs to win. Rakesh Mishra and No. 9 Amit Mishra kept them in the hunt with a 53-run partnership, but when they were separated in the 48th over, the eighth wicket had fallen. Another wicket, that of No. 10 Krishnakant Upadhyay off the first ball of the final over, with three more runs to win, gave MP hope. Two runs off the next two balls tied the scores, before No. 11 Shailender Gehlot sealed the contest by hitting a six.Seamer Ishwar Pandey was MP’s most productive bowler, with four wickets. For Railways, seamer Gehlot and spinner Ashish Yadav shared eight wickets between them, crippling the MP innings, as they were bowled out for 172.In Goa, seven wickets between seamers Prasanth Parameswaran and Sandeep Warrier, and a knock of 93 from Rohan Prem helped Kerala to a six-wicket victory against Hyderabad. Chasing 193, Kerala lost opener VA Jagadeesh in the first over, before Sanju Samson and Prem added 59 runs to steady their innings. Prem stuck around for most of the chase, and besides Samson, Robert Fernandez and captain Sachin Baby gave him support.Hyderabad, on the other hand, couldn’t recover from the first blow in their innings, the wicket of Kolla Sumanth. The two seamers, Parameswaran and Warrier, reduced them to 33 for 5 in the 16th over. But Hanuma Vihari scored 81, and put on valuable stands of 95 and 43 with Ashish Reddy and Amol Shinde as Hyderabad recovered to post 192.* The piece had initially stated that Tripura had defeated Assam. Kent denied by win for Croft

On the day Glamorgan announced a change to their traditional one-day name, they closed the season, and Robert Croft’s career, with a win to deny Kent promotion

Anyone with ambitions of foisting franchises on domestic cricket might profit by studying the experience of Glamorgan over the past twelve months. On the day when Mark Wallace and his team ended Kent’s hopes of promotion by inflicting a seven-wicket defeat on Rob Key’s team, the county announced that its limited-overs side was reverting to the name “Glamorgan” after a year in which it had been known as the “Welsh Dragons”.Explaining the change back to the old name, Glamorgan chief executive Alan Hamer said that an attempt to “stir up the passion” of supporters by rebranding the team hadn’t worked. People in Wales were not even sure what sport the renamed team played.”If you go anywhere in Wales the majority of people will say that Glamorgan is a cricket county,” said Hamer. “When you asked people who the Welsh Dragons were, they got confused as to whether that was a cricket team, a rugby union team, a rugby league team or a football team. We’ve got to be honest and go back to something which has worked and means a lot to our supporters. The decision we have now taken has been very well received.”The Glamorgan brand is well-established and is known throughout the cricket world,” continued Hamer. “It’s apt that we move back to key principles, so as well as simply calling ourselves Glamorgan, the logo will revert back to the daffodil and we are going to spend time and money developing more of our home-grown players.”I’ve been here six years but it’s in the last twelve months that I’ve realised more than ever before the feelings and passions that people have for the Glamorgan brand. If you try to introduce a franchise, it will be up against a very powerful beast and it’ll need to be very powerful if it’s going to work.”Glamorgan’s announcement was pleasantly complemented by events on the field on what turned out to be the last day of the season at Cardiff. For one thing, the county’s bowlers and fielders showed the sort of passion and persistence which are needed to win important cricket matches against teams chasing honours. Their defeat of Kent confirmed that Derbyshire and Yorkshire would be promoted from Division Two. More significantly for cricket followers in the principality, this third Championship win of the season means that Glamorgan will avoid the wooden spoon and should finish at least seventh in the second division. There were also personal reasons for joy, albeit mixed with some sadness. Most notably, these concerned Robert Croft who, after taking 2 for 76 from 22.4 overs, left the field as a Glamorgan cricketer for the last time. There was a standing ovation, a presentation and a raft of interviews, none of them less moving for being fairly predictable. Croft had the honour of dismissing the last Kent batsman, Charlie Shreck, and thus finishing his 24-year career with 1,175 first-class wickets against his name. Croft is a proud Welshman but he has been an equally proud Glamorgan cricketer. He has never needed rebranding.”I’m delighted we’re reverting back to the traditional name,” said Croft. “I’ve always known us as Glamorgan and I’m pleased with the decision that’s been made. The badge should be the biggest thing on your chest and I’m pleased it’s going to be Glamorgan’s badge again.”Yet Croft’s personal achievement had to take its place within the architecture of a game which saw Kent’s batsmen mount a courageous rearguard as they sought to make good the damage of the previous evening. Beginning the day needing 187 to make Glamorgan bat again, they eventually carved out a mere 60-run lead, although Mark Wallace’s side lost three wickets reaching their target in the evening gloom.Geraint Jones led Kent’s fight by batting over three hours for his 81 runs before he was ninth out, top-edging a pull off Jim Allenby straight to Nick James at deep square leg. Until Jones was dismissed it was never quite clear that Glamorgan had the game under control and Croft himself expressed relief that his side had not been chasing 150.Three wickets in eight balls for the impressive seamer John Glover in the second hour of the morning session had seemed to put Glamorgan in control of affairs. The loss of Sam Northeast for 40, Brendan Nash for a well-made 50 and Darren Stevens lbw first ball left Kent struggling on 96 for 5. But a 91-run stand between Jones and the former Glamorgan batsman Mike Powell restored Kent’s fortunes. It took Croft’s last vital contribution to remove his old mucker, taken by Allenby at slip for 41.Allenby then offered further evidence of his all-round skills which have been on view during almost every session of this game by claiming the decisive wickets of James Tredwell, Matt Coles and Jones to finish with 3 for 47. When Shreck lofted Croft to Nick James at long off, Kent had been dismissed for 280 and Glamorgan’s target seemed close to paltry. The loss of three cheap wickets and two breaks for bad light served to delay matters a little but at least they afforded David Lloyd the chance to make his first runs in first-class cricket by cutting Matt Coles to the backward point boundary. Lloyd had walked to the crease with three noughts to his credit but made 11 before Ben Wright punched Charlie Shreck through midwicket to complete a win that was as well-received in parts of Chelmsford and Derby as it was in Cardiff.

Cook stars after another England batting wobble

ScorecardAlastair Cook continued his form of last year into 2012 with 133 before England declared on day one•Getty Images

Alastair Cook carried his form of last year into 2012 with the first century of England’s UAE tour. Cook’s 133 was a vital knock as five wickets for Yasir Shah restricted England on the opening day of their final warm-up match in Dubai.Shah’s legspin removed England’s middle order as Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan recorded further low scores. England were reduced to 121 for 5 before Matt Prior made 46 from 57 balls. Graeme Swann’s 24 also helped England to a competitive total. But England were indebted to Cook’s 36th first-class hundred. In 2011 he scored 927 Test runs at 84.27 and, after 76 in the first-innings against an ICC Combined XI, he continued in that vein, marshalling England after Mohammad Talha had reduced them to 14 for 2. Captain Andrew Strauss was caught behind for 3 before Jonathan Trott fell leg before for a third-ball duck. Ian Bell was also dismissed for a duck – part of Shah’s haul of 5 for 76.The legspin of Shah removed England’s middle order. Kevin Pietersen, who took 10 balls to get off the mark, had got England moving with five fours in his 38 but he was bowled in the first over after lunch having shared a stand of 83 with Cook. Bell was then trapped leg before second ball and Shah also removed Morgan, whose 11 was his third failure of the tour after 1 and 3 against the ICC XI.With England in trouble, Prior got a partnership going with Cook and the pair added 90. Cook, who was dropped twice in the second half of his innings, went past 50 from 92 balls while Prior was his breezy self, striking seven fours before Tahla returned to have him caught behind.Swann, who underwent a scan on his quadriceps after the first warm-up match, played a useful part in making 24 as he and Cook put on 46. But when Swann fell caught behind off Shah, England’s innings came swiftly to an end. Shah completed his five-for by having Graham Onions caught before Cook edged behind off Tahla and England declared. There was time for eight overs of the PCB XI innings and Onions, playing the first time for England since January 2010 against South Africa, took the new ball. He conceded 13 in his three overs. Chris Tremlett, having recovered from his eye infection, sent down two overs and there was also time for a brief appearance from Swann and Monty Panesar.

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Nov-2011Sarel Burger, who was Namibia’s interim captain for most of the recent T20 series against Kenya, has been made the full-time captain. Burger led his team to a 6-2 victory in the eight-game series and topped the batting averages with 146 runs at 48.66 and a strike-rate of 97.98. He replaces Craig Williams.”We are in the middle of the preparation process for the ICC Global T20 qualifiers in March next year,” Graham McMillan, chief executive of Cricket Namibia, said in a statement. “We felt that it is important to make a change early if one was going to be made. I am sure that Sarel will step up to the new role. He has already done six matches against Kenya, he proved himself to be a very capable man-manager. “Raymond van Schoor, who captained in the other two games against Kenya, was named the vice-captain.McMillan also paid tribute to Williams, the former captain. “I would also like to recognize the role that former captain Craig Williams played in the development of Namibia’s cricket. Craig made a very valuable contribution in the way he approached the game.”I am looking forward to seeing him playing without the pressure of captaincy over his head.”
