Joy for underdogs Oman, Ireland stunned

Oman pulled off a stunning upset against a side that is known for upsetting bigger sides in global tournaments, shocking Ireland with a two-wicket win in Dharamsala

The Report by Vishal Dikshit09-Mar-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsOman celebrate their dramatic victory over Ireland in Dharamsala•International Cricket Council

Oman pulled off a stunning upset against a side that is known for upsetting stronger sides in global tournaments, shocking Ireland with a two-wicket win with two balls to spare in Dharamsala. Chasing 155 on a slow track, Oman’s fortunes swung from one extreme to the other: the openers gave them a strong start but the middle order wobbled, before an Amir Ali cameo turned things around again. They eventually sealed a historic win by taking 15 runs off a frenetic final over from Max Sorensen, who lost his lengths during a spate of full tosses that left Ireland in anguish.Oman needed 14 off the last over with three wickets in hand. The first ball from Sorenson was a shoulder-high full toss and Amir managed to steer it to the fine-leg boundary. Amir could only take a bye off the free-hit – a yorker that hit the stumps. With eight needed off five, another full toss followed – a wide one – and Ajay Lalcheta managed to edge a swipe past the keeper to the third-man boundary. Another single took it to three needed off three. The game was almost Oman’s now, but Sorensen had Amir nicking to the wicketkeeper. And then, with three needed off two balls, Sorensen bowled another high full toss that beat both batsman and keeper and raced to the boundary to set off joyous celebrations in the Oman camp.At 95 for 5, with Oman needing 61 off 30 balls, those celebrations seemed improbable before Amir cut loose. He dispatched Sorensen over the midwicket boundary and used clever shots against the experienced Tim Murtagh in the 17th over to bring the equation down to 23 from 18. Murtagh helped Oman’s cause with a no-ball and two wides in the over and Amir then finished it with three consecutive fours to tilt the balance. Kevin O’Brien kept Ireland alive by conceding only five runs in the 18th, and Oman lost two more wickets in the 19th before that dramatic finish.Oman’s openers Zeeshan Maqsood and Khawar Ali had put on a stand of 69 in 8.3 overs that kept the required run rate under eight per over. Maqsood peppered the leg side with one cracking shot after another and cashed in on loose deliveries with several swipes. He spanked three fours off Boyd Rankin in the third over and Khawar also switched gears after having faced several dot balls initially. Khawar attacked O’Brien with a consecutive four and six before he was bowled and O’Brien jolted Oman further with the wicket of Maqsood in his next over.William Porterfield then switched between Paul Stirling, Sorensen and Andy McBrine who stifled Oman with 23 boundary-less balls. McBrine made things worse for Oman by collecting two wickets in four balls in the 14th over, reducing them to 90 for 5, but that brought out Amir, who proved too dangerous for Ireland.Having opted to bat though dew was going to come into play later on, Ireland’s first few overs were filled with crunchy drives from Stirling after left-arm spinner Ajay Lalcheta started with a maiden. Stirling attacked Bilal Khan and took the score to 46 for 0 in the Powerplay as his partner Porterfield raced from 4 off 11 to 14 off 17 before the field could be spread out.Ireland were left stunned when Maqsood took a spectacular one-handed catch at extra cover, intercepting a Stirling drive and ending his innings. Ireland needed momentum to build on but could not find any because Oman brought on one spinner after another. No. 3 Gary Wilson started accelerating with two fours in the 10th over but when Porterfield tried to do the same by stepping out, he was stumped off Khawar for 29. The Ireland batsmen picked up a boundary almost every over after that but the sluggish pitch made it tough to find them more often, even off full tosses.Wilson worked hard for an innings of 38 that ended when his stumps were splattered by Munis Ansari, who also dismissed Niall O’Brien in the same over. Ansari had leaked 15 in his first over but he bowled the remaining three to not allow Ireland to get too far. He bowled yorkers, slower ones, and targeted the stumps to concede 22 runs off his last 18 balls. It was only in his last over, which leaked 12, that McBrine collected two fours to help Ireland past 150.

Thirimanne set for middle order role

Lahiru Thirimanne, Sri Lanka vice-captain, suggested he would continue to bat in the lower middle order until the World Cup, despite having tasted his greatest successes higher up.Lahiru Thirimanne is set for a middle order role•BCCI

Thirimanne struck two centuries opening the innings in this year’s Asia Cup – for which he received a Player of the Tournament award – but he has been more often seen at No. 5 or lower, as Sri Lanka seek support for Angelo Mathews towards the end of a one-day innings. His stint as opener came to an end in England, where he was repeatedly dismissed by James Anderson, but he has since struck form with the A team and in the series against India. With Sri Lanka having had trouble finding an opening partner for Tillakaratne Dilshan, Thirimanne would seemingly have been a candidate to move back up the order, but it appears likely that he will stay at No. 6, where he has just hit two fifties on the trot.”I think if you take my technique into account, I am most suited for batting in the top four,” Thirimanne said. “But for now, I’ll have to play according to what the team need, and that is in the middle order. Our top order is balanced, so my job is to strengthen the middle order when I come to bat after Angelo. I’m happy to bat wherever I’m given a spot.”Thirimanne said Sri Lanka had not finalised their XI for the first ODI, but they do have options for the opening position. Kusal Perera has been named in the squad, despite having made only four runs in three outings in India. Mahela Jayawardene has expressed a desire to open the batting as well, and may be next in line to open, should Kusal fail to convince. And the selectors have also suggested they would consider Test opener Kaushal Silva for ODIs, though Silva has not been named in the squad for the first three games.”I don’t think Mahela will play as an opener in the first match, but he is always ready to bat wherever the team needs him,” Thirimanne said. “Kusal Perera is there. We haven’t picked the XI yet but it’s likely that we’ll have a left-hand/right-hand combination tomorrow.”Thilina Kandamby’s recall also suggests the selectors are considering tinkering with the top order. Kandamby may be a candidate to step into the No. 4 slot if Jayawardene does eventually open the innings.”If Kandamby plays, he will be in the middle order,” Thirimanne said. “Because on the India tour, we lost a few top order wickets early. Angelo does a great job in the middle, because he’s in form. We have to consider our options before the World Cup. We’ve got about four or five batsmen who can fill that middle-order role. Out of those, we’ll probably try and figure out who our best two are, and they’ll be in that World Cup side. We’ll see how Kandamby goes in this series.”Sri Lanka remain without Lasith Malinga for this series, as he recovers from ankle surgery. Shaminda Eranga, Dhammika Prasad and Lahiru Gamage have been named as specialist quicks, with Suranga Lakmal also expected to be available from the fourth ODI onwards. But none of those bowlers have played 20 ODIs, with Gamage having only debuted this month.”We feel the absence of Lasith Malinga a lot,” Thirimanne said. “I think the death overs is where a bowler’s maturity is most tested. The new bowlers we have are talented, but when it comes to the final few overs, they can have nerves. We’ve been training with that in mind in the past week though, and I’m sure the bowlers will come with a good plan.”

Akmal, Lions spinners knock Dolphins out

Robbie Frylinck’s all-round display was not enough to stop Dolphins from becoming the first side to be knocked out of the tournament in a game that looked a lot closer in the end than it actually was

The Report by Abhishek Purohit27-Sep-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSaad Nasim and Umar Akmal revived Lahore Lions with a 92-run partnership•BCCIRobbie Frylinck’s all-round display on his birthday was not enough to stop Dolphins from becoming the first side to be knocked out of the tournament in a game that looked a lot closer in the end than it actually was. Frylinck was solely responsible for that deception, as he blitzed an incredible, unbeaten 63 off 27 deliveries after Dolphins had crumbled to 93 for 9 against the Lahore Lions spinners in a chase of 165. With 72 needed off the last four overs, Frylinck took 41 off the 17th and 18th overs before Lions managed to weather the unexpected storm.Dolphins had earlier let Lions recover from 34 for 4 on an unusually slow and turning Bangalore surface. Umar Akmal was the architect of the recovery with an unbeaten 73 off 45, and Saad Nasim’s 43 off 26 was a worthy support act. The pair added 92 in under nine overs, after which Mohammad Hafeez let loose his army of spinners on the Dolphins batsmen, who tried to slog their way out of cluelessness and only managed to get themselves out.It was Frylinck doing early damage with the ball too after Lions chose to bat. Offering no pace with his cutters on his way to 3 for 22, he claimed Ahmed Shehzad and Nasir Jamshed in his first two overs. When Hafeez too succumbed to the lack of pace as he played on off Cameron Delport, Lions were down to 34 for 4, and it was already the eighth over.Akmal adapted superbly to the conditions. He played square only when he had width, and made sure he picked the gaps when he did so. When he hit, he mostly lofted straight. He was put down by the wicketkeeper Morne van Wyk off Prenelan Subrayen when he was on 20 off 19, and took 53 off the next 26.The very next over after being reprieved, he lofted the left-arm spin of Keshav Maharaj for a couple of sixes, and then cut and pulled Andile Phehlukwayo’s short ones for three boundaries.Nasim played an intelligent knock, making sure he put the bad deliveries away. When Subrayen bowled his offspin without a deep midwicket, Nasim, deposited him for successive sixes over the same region. While Lions prospered against spin, Dolphins capitulated. Barring van Wyk and Jonathan Vandiar, none of the top seven seemed keen to bat with sense. Even as van Wyk kept finding the boundary with ease, his partners kept throwing their wickets away. Van Wyk could not keep a cut down off Nasim on 36 while Vandiar holed out in the deep for 29.It was free-fall for the rest, and Dolphins’ discomfort was so obvious that till 14 overs, Hafeez had used only two of his pacers. When he did bring back Wahab Riaz and Aizaz Cheema, Frylinck set about them in a stunning display of power-hitting. Riaz was taken for three successive fours in the 17th while Cheema was dismissed for four sixes over long-on in the 18th.With 31 needed off 12 now, Hafeez went back to spin, and Frylinck was unable to take more than a four off Mustafa Iqbal in the 19th. Last man Subrayen consumed the first two balls each of the last two overs, and Frylinck could not do an encore against Riaz with four successive sixes needed to take it to a Super Over.

Real-time Snicko gets Ashes debut

Real-Time Snicko technology is expected to be used in conjunction with Hot Spot to detect edges as part of the DRS for the upcoming Ashes series

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Nov-2013The ICC has confirmed that Real-time Snicko technology will be be used in conjunction with Hot Spot to detect edges as part of the DRS for the upcoming Ashes series. In October, it appeared that Channel Nine had cut Hot Spot from its list of tools for this summer’s coverage but the network’s executive producer of cricket, Brad McNamara, confirmed that Hot Spot and Real-time Snicko will be available after a deal was reached with BBG Sports, which provides the technologies.*Cricket Australia and the ECB have both agreed to the use of the products and the ICC will treat the Ashes as a further, full-scale trial for the new Real-time Snicko technology before determining if it will be rolled out further. It was previously tested on the sidelines of the previous Ashes series in England.Under the existing DRS, Snicko cannot be used as the process of matching the audio with the vision is too time-consuming, but the new Real-time Snicko reportedly makes the process almost instantaneous, giving the third umpire an extra tool to make his decision.”The ICC has been monitoring the development of RTS for the past 12 months, including its use in more than 50 days of cricket coverage during the English summer,” the ICC’s general manager Geoff Allardice said.”We were happy to support the initiative of CA and the ECB because we believe it can improve the DRS by getting more decisions correct involving faint edges, to help the umpires make those decisions faster, and to help spectators and viewers better understand those decisions.”McNamara earlier told the : “We had a difficult negotiation with BBG Sports but thankfully we’ve come together. We’re thrilled to have Hot Spot continue as part of the coverage.”We’re all about the best technology in the world. We feel that is among it and are looking forward to adding to that with Real-time Snicko, which we think will add to the viewers’ experience and also hopefully help in the decision-making process for umpires. It will change the DRS. Hopefully you won’t get the mistakes.”Hot Spot was particularly controversial during this year’s Ashes in England, when it appeared not to detect a number of thin edges and the TV umpires at times used evidence from stump microphones instead. Australia’s captain Michael Clarke wrote in his newly-released book that he would prefer Hot Spot not be used until it was more reliable.”My opinion is that if the technology isn’t perfect, it shouldn’t be used at all,” Clarke wrote. “The inventor and owner of Hot Spot [Warren Brennan] came out and admitted it doesn’t pick up all nicks. Ok, that’s fine: Hot Spot should not be used until it is more reliable. Once the technology has been tested and is shown to be correct, then the ICC should rule that every team has to use it. We should have the same rule for everyone.”The other major change to the DRS for this summer’s Ashes will be the introduction of extra reviews, after the ICC announced it would trial a system of topping up a team’s reviews to two after 80 overs in an innings. Irrespective of whether a team has used none, one or both of its reviews, its available review tally will be set to two after the 80-over mark.*1.20pm GMT, November 19: this story was updated to reflect confirmation from ICC
