Chelsea: Fans demand answers over Kai Havertz after debut appearance against Brighton

Chelsea were victorious in their first Premier League match of the season after a convincing performance against Brighton.

The clash at the Amex Stadium saw the Blues scoop all three points after a 3-1 win to set them up for their meeting with Liverpool next.

Youngster Reece James shone after bagging a goal and an assist, with Timo Werner also doing well to earn his new side a penalty in the first half. However, fellow new recruit Kai Havertz had more of a quiet debut.

The official Chelsea Instagram page has uploaded snaps of the two new boys in action, but a lot of fans are demanding answers over Havertz.

The midfielder was played on the right wing against Brighton, which is not his natural position. A lot of Chelsea fans have taken to the comments of the Instagram post to ask why their new £71million signing is being played out of position and not in his more comfortable midfield role.

Despite not being directly involved in any of the goals, Havertz still had a solid game. According to Sofascore, the 21-year-old maintained an 88% passing rate along with completing three tackles and one key pass.

It’s still very early doors for the Chelsea newbie and Frank Lampard is just getting started in terms of the club’s impact on the league this season. After a return of 18 goals and nine assists across all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen last campaign, some big performances can undoubtedly be expected from Havertz.

How many goals do you think Kai Havertz will score this season? Have your say in the comments below!

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho may have found his next Frank Lampard

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho could be eyeing up an audacious swoop to bolster his midfield armoury this summer, according to emerging reports.

What’s the word?

La Repubblica, via Sport Witness, claim that the Portuguese chief wants AS Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo at the club next season.

It’s also suggested that the 21-year-old’s relationship with his manager, Paulo Fonseca, is strained and that there’s an uphill battle faced in terms of reconciliation.

Whilst the Serie A outfit are seemingly unwilling to sell their midfield maestro, they have slapped a whopping €70-80m (£65-72m) price tag on Zaniolo’s back with league rivals Inter Milan and Juventus also keen on signing him.

Mourinho’s midfield talisman

The Italian international is one of the most exciting advanced midfielders in the game right now having provided seven goals and three assists whilst averaging 2.3 dribbles, 1.7 shots and 1.1 key passes per game, via WhoScored.

His performances for Roma have drawn high praise indeed.

Club legend Francesco Totti claimed that Zaniolo “has explosive strength and technique, and everything it takes to become a truly great player” whilst his former coach at Inter, Stefano Vecchi, likened him to Steven Gerrard and Mourinho’s ex-talisman Frank Lampard.

“He will go places. He has the characteristics to become a modern mezzala. He’s a [Steven] Gerrard, [Frank] Lampard-type player.”

Spurs hardly need any more attacking options, but a chance to sign his next Lampard should surely be too tempting to refuse.

Christian Eriksen’s void is still felt in north London with Giovani Lo Celso only managing to muster up one assist all season in the Premier League.

Zaniolo may come at a premium, but that’s somewhat the going-rate for a player who’s undoubtedly a generational talent.

And in other news, Paul Merson’s Spurs comments were instantly proven to be a mockery at the weekend…

Luke Edwards is "50/50" on the Newcastle takeover going through

Newcastle United’s prospective £300m takeover continues to be in the hands of the Premier League with a decision seemingly still some way from being final.

The whole process has been a long and tedious as it fastly descends into a third month of doubts and deliberations. Reports first broke in early April that Mike Ashley had agreed to sell the northeast club to Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabian-backed consortium.

But that’s where the PL have been forced into a tight corner as it’s believed that the Middle Eastern state is behind pirate streaming service beoutQ, which illegally broadcasts English top-flight matches.

This week, the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has delivered a fresh verdict over the takeover, but it’s a rather bold and worrying call.

Speaking on the ‘Everything is Black and White‘ podcast, he said:

“My gut feeling – and it’s only a feeling – is that it will be passed but I am now at the point where I am probably reducing myself to 50/50. Now that’s where I am. I think it’s a 50/50 call on which way it will go.”

Edwards has been on the ball throughout the process, so his inclination that it’s going to be a 50/50 decision on the Premier League’s part is cause for concern.

He does state that he thinks it will hinge on the positive side of things, but given how long it has already taken, there is an air of uncertainty floating around the St James’ Park faithful.

In reality, no one really knows what the PL will decide to do, and it’s fair to argue that they’ve had the ‘Project Restart’ fiasco on their hands, too.

Only time will tell if United will begin a new era in the northeast.

Paris Saint-Germain would find a perfect Neymar replacement in Sadio Mane

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Paris Saint-Germain are seemingly still trying to cope with Neymar Junior over in the French capital.

Even though the Brazilian has been quite effective for the Saints – seeing how he managed to net 57 goals and a total of 30 assists in just 67 games played since his arrival – Thomas Tuchel just might be ready to offload the samba star.

Or he’s at least bracing for his potential departure further down the line.

France Football (via Sport Witness) have come out recently with a report stating that PSG are looking at Neymar alternatives in case he truly does end up leaving Parc des Princes.

The same source mentions that the Saints see Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, valued at £135m by Transfermarkt, as the perfect replacement for the Brazilian.

And looking at it from their point of view, that truly seems like a match made in heaven.

After all, Jurgen Klopp’s talisman has arguably been one of the best players in the Premier League in 2019/20, already bagging nine goals and six assists in the league.

No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?

He was also recently named as the fourth-best player in the world, finishing only behind Lionel Messi, Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo in the final Ballon d’Or standings.

Needless to say, he is a player with incredible quality and at the age of 27, he truly looks like a like-for-like replacement for Neymar.

Right now he could very well be an upgrade if Paris Saint-Germain manage to snatch him away from Liverpool.

But that’s the trick in the whole story – is this deal even possible?

Considering how important Mane is to Klopp and the fact Liverpool are currently among the best teams in Europe, it’s highly unlikely that the French giants can clinch this deal.

But the odds were arguably against them in the signing of Neymar as well and here we are. Nothing is truly impossible in football and for that reason, this deal, although unlikely, shouldn’t be completely disregarded as a non-starter.

Let’s see what ends up happening.

Elsewhere, many Spurs fans were over the moon with the latest update on Jose Mourinho’s huge winter plans…

Leeds fans frustrated by Tyler Roberts injury

Leeds United fans on Twitter have vented their frustrations on social media after Tyler Roberts came off injured in the first half against Reading.

The Wales international went down just after the half-hour mark, and he was unable to continue as he was replaced by Helder Costa.

Sadly, it was widely reported by reputable journalists that Roberts looked upset when coming off the pitch.

[ad_pod ]

Rather than showing him sympathy in what seemed to be a tough moment, fans on social media lambasted him for his injury proneness.

To be fair to them, Roberts has missed a lot of action as he’s only been able to start four games this term after missing the first few months of the campaign with a knee problem.

Here is just a selection of the reaction from the Elland Road faithful…

Others were even less sympathetic as they took his injury as a chance to jump on his back about his poor performance up until that point in the evening.

Jordan Hugill is thriving on loan at Queens Park Rangers

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

When Jordan Hugill left West Ham United to join Queens Park Rangers on loan during the summer, he did so as a man with a point to prove

He had pretty much been discarded by the Hammers after playing just 22 minutes of football for them across three substitute appearances in 2018.

The striker spent last season with Middlesbrough, scoring 6 goals in 20 league starts and 17 substitute appearances for the club – a decent total, albeit far from eye-catching.

Watch West Ham United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

He has really kicked on this season at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium though, already exceeding last season’s goal tally with 7 strikes from 11 starts and 4 substitute appearances – that tally includes a brace against Sheffield Wednesday to secure a 2-1 victory for QPR.

Following that game, Mark Warburton summarised how useful he has been for the club, as he was quoted on West London Sport as saying: “A good striker feeds off of good chances and I told him he’d get that by coming to QPR, and he has. He’s responded really well.

“There were good quality finishes today I’m sure he upset a few in the crowd. But you have to do that. You have to come to a tough venue and draw the fouls, and you have to be strong, and you have to look after the football and link play – and he did all of those and more.”

The 27-year-old’s effectiveness hasn’t come solely from goals though, as he has won 3.3 aerial duels per game, helping to bring strike partner Nakhi Wells into the game – his influence is indicated by the fact he has already been awarded Man of the Match twice by WhoScored.

His lack of polish is still evident though, marked by 6 yellow cards, 2.2 fouls committed per game, as well as his average of 2.5 unsuccessful touches.

It is this side of the former Preston North End striker’s game that makes it unlikely Manuel Pellegrini will reinstate him to the West Ham team, but that should not detract from the fact Hugill, who is valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt, has achieved some form of redemption this season after a tough couple of years since moving to the Hammers.

Real Madrid have to put some faith into Thibaut Courtois

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It’s difficult to make it at Real Madrid.

That much we can all agree on. After all, many big names have tried and failed and many more will surely follow in the future.

At the moment, Thibaut Courtois is in danger of becoming one of those stars that arrived as big reinforcements and a step in the right direction only to trip over their own feet and flop.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

With that being said, Real Madrid’s reported interest in buying a potential replacement for the former Chelsea star doesn’t really come as a surprise.

El Desmarque recently came out with a story that Unai Simon of Athletic Bilbao is being studied by Florentino Perez and co. as a possible replacement for their out of favour Belgian ace.

Seemingly, the Galacticos expect much more from the 27-year-old between the sticks and even though nothing is set in stone just yet, he is walking on a tight rope.

But would that really be the right way to go for the Whites?

After all, it very much seems like we haven’t really seen the best out of Courtois but it could yet come his way.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

His stellar display against Galatasaray in a do or die scenario – when he recorded three vital saves for the team – is definitely something that can support this argument.

It must be remembered that we are talking about a goalie that was a big name at both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid and still is when playing for his national side, Belgium.

Maybe the pressure of donning the royal white got to him and the fans’ constant outcries and critiques were a bit too much but those things have nothing to do with his ability.

It’s all in the head, isn’t it?

For that reason, parting ways with him should not really be on the agenda for Los Blancos and Zinedine Zidane should put some faith into his man.

And who knows, maybe it will pay off and Real will suddenly have a world-class goalkeeper on their hands.

Exclusive: John Hartson claims Sir Alex Ferguson moved players on at exactly the right time

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson has hailed Sir Alex Ferguson’s ability to rejuvenate his squad and move players on at exactly the right time.

The likes of Manchester United, and even rivals Tottenham, have been presented with a situation where their most high-profile players have expressed a desire to leave.

The Red Devils have already seen the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez depart in the summer, whilst Spurs face the prospect of losing Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld over the course of the next year or so.

And now, Hartson has tipped his hat to Ferguson’s ability to constantly stay on top of things, and to accurately make strong judgement calls on the players who needed to be shipped out.

He said: “There’s always change at football clubs but that’s where managers show their class.

“Sir Alex Ferguson knew when to get rid of great players. He knew when players were fading away. Sir Alex was great at that.”

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Make no mistake about it, ensuring you’re making the right decision in moving players on is a true art form.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already seen the perils of trying to refresh his squad, most notably through the current shortage of options they have up front. Would Ferguson have given the green-light to let both Lukaku and Sanchez go in the same window without first having signed a replacement? Probably not.

Solskjaer is still in the infancy of his managerial reign at the highest level, and it is therefore far too ridiculous and premature to expect the Norwegian to have the same sort of nous that United’s greatest ever boss had.

But as the Red Devils continue their rebuild, they have to get things absolutely spot on in regards to the personnel they let go over the coming months and years.
