Pundit View: John Hughes heaps praise on Scott Arfield

[ad_pod ]

Former Falkirk and Inverness manager John Hughes has heaped praise on Scott Arfield after the midfielder’s hat trick on Sunday.

Arfield showed the Ibrox faithful what they have been waiting for all season on Sunday, finally adding some goals from midfield.

The lack of a proper “number ten” and goals from midfield has been a huge issue as the Gers have struggled to break down deep defences in recent months, but that problem could now be solved if Arfield’s performance against Motherwell was anything to go by.

And Hughes, who brought Arfield into his Falkirk side as a teenager, thinks the ex-Burnley ace will have a huge role to play in bringing silverware to Ibrox.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

What did he say?

“I love Scott. I have been on record before as saying he is the kind of player who will end up being first on Stevie Gerrard’s team sheet because he is a manager’s dream,” Hughes said, as reported by The Scotsman.

“Actually, the only problem for Scotty is that he can play in a number of positions and you don’t know what his best position is.

“He could play right-back, trust me. He was a great right back and able to bomb on throughout a game.

“He can also play sitting midfield, right wing, left wing and come off a striker and into the pockets of space behind him.

“You look at what he did at Fir Park on Sunday and it was three good goals, really accomplished finishes.

“As I said, he is a manager’s dream. In the way he trains as well as plays. He trains every day like it is his very last day at training. He is at it all the time. Never slacks off.”

Manager’s dream

Hughes went on to say that he expects Rangers to compete with Celtic for trophies in the near future, but only with “three or four” new additions to the first team.

And he clearly thinks Arfield will have a huge part to play in any success Gerrard does have at Ibrox, though only time will tell if that comes as a number ten or in one of the countless positions Hughes mentioned.

Either way, the 30 year-old Arfield is an extremely useful player for the gaffer to have at his disposal, and if he can keep up his form heading into next season maybe the club won’t need to sign an out-and-out number ten after all.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is looking a £45m player for Everton at last

Everton have had their struggles this season but a dominant performance over Chelsea at Goodison Park last weekend emphasised the hunger and will of some of the Everton players to finish the season on a high.

One of those players is Gylfi Sigurdsson, who scored on the rebound from a saved penalty against Chelsea to give the Toffees a famous 2-0 win. Everton have found it tough to work together as a team and combinations have been difficult to finalise for manager Marco Silva, who has constantly made changes to his team throughout the campaign.

But, apart from Lucas Digne, Sigurdsson has probably been the club’s most consistent player this season and his experience has been of great value for the manager and the other players in the team. Indeed, while Toffees must have been shocked when the club spent around £40-£45m to sign him from Swansea in 2017, the Icelandic star is looking worth the money.

Since being moved to the number ten role in the team with Bernard to his left and either Richarlison or Theo Walcott on his right, the former Tottenham ace has been able to control the way Everton attack and how they set up to run at opposition defenders.

His excellent game-management and ability to give the perfect pass has unfortunately been let down by the lack of a proper centre-forward. Nonetheless, he has been able to create space for players like Bernard and Richarlison to run into before attacking from the flanks or giving crosses into the box.

He’s proven to be the key creator in the Everton team due to his brilliant skill and ability to read the game and adapt under certain circumstances.

The Iceland international’s hand in that will be of high importance for the manager who will be desperate to get some consistent wins under the belt before the season concludes in May. £45m isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination but Sigurdsson’s importance to Everton’s team amid this growing project on Merseyside is invaluable.

Darren Bent opens up on helping relegate former club Sunderland

[ad_pod ]

Darren Bent has opened up on his role in the defeat to Burton Albion that relegated Sunderland to League One.

Plenty of Sunderland fans feel that the total capitulation that sent them down to the third tier of English football was a blessing in disguise, and they’d be right.

The reset button has been pressed and the club are finally looking up instead of down under new owner Stewart Donald.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

That doesn’t take anything away from the heartbreak of last year’s drop out of the Championship though, and Bent has spoken out about his goal for Burton Albion on that fateful day.

“It was mixed emotions to be fair, because I always said to myself that if I ever scored against Sunderland, I wouldn’t celebrate,” Bent revealed on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday, as reported by Chronicle Live.

“But the amount of stick I was taking when I was warming up and as I walked out for the warm up, it just got the best of me when I scored and it was unfortunate that they went down.”

Indeed, the Black Cats had taken a lead which would have pulled them to within a few points of safety had they held on until the final whistle, but Bent scored with five minutes remaining before Liam Boyce stunned the Stadium of Light in stoppage time.

The 35 year-old scored 36 goals in 63 appearances on Wearside, so Sunderland fans, what do you think about his comments? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Tottenham fans blown away by Sissoko display

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday as they defeated Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at Signal Iduna Park.

Spurs went into the game holding a 3-0 lead from the first leg at Wembley, and turned in a polished performance to reach the last eight.

Moussa Sissoko, so impressive this season, was at the centre of his side’s victory, laying on a brilliant assist to Harry Kane for his side’s only goal.

The France international split the defence with a precise through ball and Kane, having taken a touch, curled an excellent effort beyond Roman Burki.

Per WhoScored, Sissoko enjoyed a 91% pass success rate, made three tackles, one interception and three clearances.

And Spurs fans were blown away by the former Newcastle United man’s exceptional display in Germany, particularly given the fact that he appeared to be a hugely expensive flop last season.

Take a look at the best of the reaction on Twitter below!

Tottenham open talks with Joachim Andersen

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham have opened talks with Sampdoria over a bid for defender Joachim Andersen, per Calciomercato.

Spurs are interested in reinforcing their defence this summer and have targeted a move for the centre-back.

What’s the word?

The aforementioned report claims that Spurs have spoken with Sampdoria about the prospect of securing a deal to sign Andersen this summer.

The 22-year-old has a contract that runs until 2022 but Calciomercato state that he could be sold in the next transfer window.

Spurs are reported to be ready to pay €25million (£21.9m) to sign Andersen, who has been capped at numerous youth levels by Denmark. He has won 16 caps for the Under-21s but is yet to make his senior debut.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

Nevertheless, Andersen has played 90 minutes in every Serie A game this season bar one, a 2-1 loss to Juventus for which he was suspended.

The report claims that there is also interest from Juve and Inter Milan and that Sampdoria will hope to secure a higher bid from Spurs than they would from their compatriots.

Youth is king

Spurs only enter the transfer market for the right player and it appears that youth is central to Mauricio Pochettino’s thinking.

The last centre-back the club signed, Davinson Sanchez, was 21 when he moved to Spurs in 2017 and the club forked out a record fee to secure his signature, paying Ajax £42m.

A similar scenario has emerged with Andersen, as Spurs again look to pick up a youthful centre-back with the potential to become a key player under Pochettino.

Toby Alderweireld has a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave this summer if the club receive a bid worth £25m and that money could well fund their pursuit of Andersen.

It would also allow for a reduction in playing time for Jan Vertonghen, who will turn 32 in April.

Chairman Daniel Levy is likely to see the resale potential in Andersen, too, who could later fetch double what Spurs may pay for him if he takes to the Premier League in the same vein as Sanchez.

Mauricio Pochetino has mastered the art of winning late

Tottenham Hotspur’s games as of late have been filled with thrills and last-minute drama. Despite missing key players in Harry Kane and Dele Alli, they’ve shown unrelenting spirit to dig out victories in the dying moments. Spurs have won their last three bouts in dramatic fashion, displaying unmatched resolve into finding the winner late into the games.

Following the frustrating loss to Manchester United at home, Mauricio Pochettino’s been reinvigorated into reigniting the players’ belief. They might be missing their captain, but Spurs always have an encouraging manager whose urging his players forward even when games feel finished.

The Argentine manager’s ability to reinvigorate his players’ never-say-die attitude has been exemplified in the last couple of weeks. Spurs snatched victories from the jaws of dropped points, maintaining their discreet surge towards an unlikely title challenge.

Be it a very late winner at Craven Cottage, an inspired come-back against a resolute Watford or carving open an impenetrable Newcastle at home, Pochettino’s side has won their last three games after the 80th-minute mark. Late goals are their new favourite thing.

Be it inspired substitutions or moments of brilliance from talented individuals the recent victories have truly brought to light Pochettino’s motivational ability. If not anything, he’s proven that it’s not only the Kanes’ or Alli’s who can come up with goals.

Having etched a must win at all cause attitude into every single player, irrelevant or crucial, it seems the Argentine’s coming up with his own version of “Fergie Time”. Indeed, perhaps he could have added yet another string to his bow and the most important time possible, helping Tottenham to really challenge for the title.

Wilder back at Sheffield UnitedReplaces Heckingbottom as managerSheffield United 20th in Premier LeagueGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The Blades' owner confirmed that the club have parted ways with manager Heckingbottom after a series of poor results, with Wilder drafted in swiftly as his replacement. Wilder has returned to Bramall Lane two and half years after his original exit, and will now set about steering the club out of the relegation zone. Incidentally, it was Heckingbottom who replaced him as Sheffield's interim manager in March 2021.

AdvertisementWHAT PRINCE ABDULLAH SAID

Speaking to , Prince Abdullah said: "Yes [I have made the decision]. Chris is practically an honour of the club, he’s part of Sheffield United history. One thing I always like to do, not just in football but all of my businesses, is to keep a good relationship with my ex-employees no matter how it ended, I think you should get over it. At the end of the day we’re all passionate about what we do and we believe Chris is the right man for the job. Chris has done great things for the club and in my opinion he’s the best guy on planet earth to take over the club right now in these circumstances."

He added on Heckingbottom's departure: “I have mixed emotions about letting Paul go.I really have a lot of respect for Paul and everything he did for the club, he’s a very classy guy. I’ve been at the club for five years and we changed one manager and that was Slav [Slavisa Jokanovic], so we believe in sticking with the manager and supporting him. But I felt like after the last few games it was a necessary decision and the replacement has done great things for the clubs and knows the club, so I feel good about the decision in one way but I really have a tremendous respect for Paul."

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Sheffield United, who won promotion to the Premier League last season, have managed to win just once in 14 matches in 2023-24 and sit rock bottom of the table. With Heckingbottom's departure, the Blades become the first top-tier club to part ways with their manager this term. Last season it was Bournemouth who terminated Scott Parker's contract in August after just four games into the season.

A club statement was released confirming Heckingbottom's sacking, before Wilder was officially announced as the Blades' new manager. "Quite simply it was an opportunity which I just couldn't turn down," Wilder told the club website. "Just like in 2016, when this club comes calling, it is not something you pass up. This is Sheffield United, it is my team and I am thrilled to be back. We find ourselves in a difficult position, I understand that, but I think I can make a difference."

Mind over money: Chelsea winners, losers and ratings as Dinamo Zagreb shock wealthy Blues

Thomas Tuchel's men lost 1-0 on Tuesday to start their Champions League campaign.

Chelsea spent about £272 million in the summer transfer market, including a reported fee of £75 million for centre-back Wesley Fofana. Dinamo Zagreb's biggest splurge was £4m on forward Bosko Sutalo. They are both in the Champions League, but by almost every other identifier, they live in different stratospheres.

It was a dreadful performance from the Blues, who were completely stifled by the underdog Croatian club. In a match that served as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's debut, the Blues attack was toothless while the defence was undone by one moment of magic – a deft dink from Mislav Orsic beyond goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea's Champions League campaign is off to the worst possible start, putting further pressure on a team that has already lost twice in the Premier League and barely scraped a win against West Ham last weekend.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Mislav Orsic:

Unless you're a fan of the Croatian league or a die-hard FIFA Ultimate Team fanatic, you might not be super familiar with Orsic.

But Orsic always seems to pop up in European play. He score a hat-trick against Atalanta in 2019, and then another against Tottenham in 2021 to knock them out of the Europa League. And then there was the goal against West Ham last December that knocked the Londoners out of the Europa League.

The point is, Orsic is a goal-getter. He's fast, direct and, when the time comes, clinical. Chelsea lost track of him for one moment, and he made no mistake.

AC Milan:

From the moment the group was announced, there were two favourites: Chelsea and AC Milan. And, with the Blues' loss, the advantage is now with the Italians when it comes to seizing control of the group.

We have a long way to go, and AC Milan may have their own stumbles. Maybe Dinamo can push on and challenge for an advancement position. Maybe RB Salzburg's youngsters are further along than many think, allowing them to push on.

But, in all likelihood, this group will prove to be a two-horse race.

Despite this loss, Chelsea should be fine in terms of reaching the knockout rounds. They're too talented not to be. But the ball is now in AC Milan's court when it comes to topping the group.

Matteo Kovacic:

If there was one Chelsea player that could hold his head somewhat high, it was Kovacic.

He was introduced to a bit of applause in his home country and, by the end, he was essentially the only Chelsea player worthy of it. Playing in a midfield two with Mason Mount, he was the only Chelsea player that did much of anything in a lifeless first half.

Kovacic wasn't perfect by any means, but he was solid enough, showing once again how vital he is to this Chelsea team despite all of the flashy new signings.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Kalidou Koulibaly:

The former Napoli defender has now had about a month's worth of games at Chelsea, and at no time has he looked like the towering presence that lorded over Serie A for so long.

Koulibaly was at least partially at fault for the opener, with the Senegalese and Wesley Fofana both involved. That, most likely, is a result of playing alongside a new team-mate, with the two certainly needing time to adjust to each other's tendencies.

If it were in a vacuum, you could excuse that goal. Yet Koulibaly hasn't quite looked himself since coming to Chelsea, with this goal only the latest example.

Is it just new club jitters? Does he need more time to adjust to his new surroundings after so long in Napoli? Or should Chelsea be more concerned?

Time will tell, but they'll need Koulibaly at his best going forward if they're to compete at the top level.

Chelsea's attack:

It's almost like they were playing FIFA without a shoot button.

Each and every time Chelsea got into a dangerous situation, things got too cute. Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the trio of starters, were either too selfish or not selfish enough, as virtually every promising attack ended with a Dinamo tackle and clearance.

It isn't just the fact that Chelsea were shut out by Zagreb, but rather how they were. Eight total shots, two on target, and very little to care about other than that.

Romelu Lukaku is gone. So too is Timo Werner. The club has brought in stars like Sterling and Aubameyang to breathe new life into an attack that hadn't been good enough.

Things have yet to get better, though.

Thomas Tuchel:

Managers often get too much blame and too much credit. Players win games, after all. A manager's job is just to set them up to do so.

But Tuchel must take some criticism for what we've seen from Chelsea.

Hindsight is 20-20, of course, but a double-pivot of Mount and Kovacic was never going to work. Returning to a five-at-the-back system, Chelsea looked frail defensively and clueless in the attack against a Dinamo team they should have steamrolled.

Part of that is down to the players, of course, who weren't sharp or decisive enough. But blame also has to fall to the manager who continues to see his team struggle with basics.

Despite the millions of dollars spent to bring in players, Tuchel's Chelsea look like a poor imitation of what they could and should be.

Getty ImagesChelsea Ratings: Defence

Kepa Arrizabalaga (6/10):

Got dinked on the goal, but made up for it with a spectacular save later on.

Ben Chilwell (6/10):

A solid enough performance from the defender, even if he was offside on Aubameyang's would-be goal. He's making a case he belongs in the starting XI.

Kalidou Koulibaly (5/10):

Still far from his best.

Wesley Fofana (5/10):

Was outpaced on the goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6/10):

Hooked at half-time as Chelsea needed something new, but no fault of his.

Reece James (7/10):

Chelsea's Mr. Reliable struck the post in the second half and was generally positive both ways.

Confira e simule a tabela do Brasileirão

Jogaram futebol.
