Mashrafe hoping for strong Kolkata support

If there is one venue in the world that could be home from home for Bangladesh, it is the ground they will begin their Super 10s on Wednesday

Agarkar: Bangladesh will want a bit more from Shakib

If there is one venue in the world that could be home from home for Bangladesh, it is the ground they will begin their Super 10s on Wednesday. Kolkatans speak with a different inflection, and a recent trade embargo means Bangladeshi no longer makes it into this city’s eateries, but still, Bangladesh is elementally tied with Bengal; through shared history, struggle and language. It is on this common soil that Mashrafe Mortaza hopes to break ground on the next phase of their World T20 campaign. Dharamsala, where Bangladesh played their group stage, was so cold and wet, he said, it almost felt like Irish conditions. Bangladesh haven’t played in Kolkata for 25 years, but if Mashrafe gets his wish, this game will feel a little like coming home.”I think this is a good opportunity to play in this ground,” he said. “I don’t know if 90,000 people will turn up for tomorrow’s game, but we are excited to be playing here and we want to make it memorable. As a Bengali, I can hope that Kolkata will be behind us.”Even for non-Bengalis, Bangladesh have become an easy team to get behind. Over the past 14 months, a distinct brand of cricket has developed around a battery of canny seam bowlers, of whom Mashrafe himself is Exhibit A. Their rise began in ODIs, but has now spread to their T20 game. Having been Asia Cup finalists in the past fortnight, they go into the tournament as dark horses of sorts.”We were not really good in T20s but now we are playing fearless cricket,” Mashrafe said. “We are giving it our best, and all our players have their role. When we do all this together, we know we can win. Our coaches have really helped us.”In a 12-month period populated with happy firsts, Bangladesh got their first T20 century-maker on Sunday, when Tamim Iqbal struck 103 not out against Oman. Mashrafe said his whole top order was poised to deliver in the Super 10s.”Tamim is in good touch since the last World Cup. Not only Tamim, actually, but all the batsmen are fired up, especially in T20 cricket. In India they can do much better than at home, because the Asia Cup was played on seaming wickets. Tamim and Sabbir are scoring regularly and Soumya is doing it in patches too. I think when the top order does well, the pressure is off the middle order.”If there is a concern in that middle order, it is the relative lack of runs from Mushfiqur Rahim. He has been out in single figures in four of his five most recent outings. Shakib Al Hasan has also been a little quieter than usual with the bat, though he does have a much better string of scores behind him.”I want everyone to perform but in this format, you don’t always get time,” Mashrafe said. “Especially for those batting in the middle order who don’t get time to get settled in the crease. I think Shakib and Mushfiqur are trying their hardest and they have performed regularly in the recent past.”Shakib is an important player for us. He has performed under pressure for the last seven to eight years. We can always bounce off ideas from him about this ground as this is where his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders is based.”

Rahane's technique earns Wadekar praise

‘In IPL, it is very difficult to see a technically correct batsman. But, the only person who comes to mind is Ajinkya Rahane’ – Ajit Wadekar•BCCI

Amid the many innovations seeping into a batsman’s game, former India captain Ajit Wadekar has praised India and Rajasthan Royals batsman Ajinkya Rahane for sticking to the coaching manual.”In IPL, it is very difficult to see a technically correct batsman,” Wadekar told . “But, the only person who comes to mind is Ajinkya Rahane. He knows how to play T20 cricket. He has a good defence and also the temperament to go with his talent. He has many years to go in international cricket”But cricket is calling for increased skill and even that coaching manual might require updating feels fellow former India Test player Madhav Apte. “Technique in the present day has to be re-defined. A lot of it is improvisation. Whether the bat is coming from behind or straight is not relevant,” he said. “Obviously, technique is important but it is like a clown in a circus. He may do all the foolish acts but he still gives a sound performance.”Narine backed to beat scrutiny on action
Kolkata Knight Riders back Sunil Narine to pass a second bowling action retest in three weeks. He was reported during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 22 and was rushed to Sri Ramachandra Arthroscopy and Sports Science Centre in Chennai for another assessment.Wasim Akram, the team’s bowling mentor, who had accompanied him to Chennai, called Narine “a unique talent” and was hopeful of a positive result.”Sunil went for his test on Saturday and the deliveries that the umpires were worried about were looked at,” Akram wrote in his column for . According to the officials some of Sunil’s deliveries to the left-handers are slightly suspect, like the offbreak, the carrom ball and the quicker one. All of his deliveries have been checked again and a report will be sent to the [BCCI suspect actions] committee which will decide his fate.”Gautam Gambhir, the Knight Riders captain, said “Most of us knew even after he was cleared in Chennai that he can again be reported again. All this can be very disturbing and unsettling for a player.”

Sri Lanka seek to stall Hambantota slide

Big Picture

The locals in Sri Lanka’s southeast had been hoping for heavy rains to rejuvenate their crops and refill their wells. The rain though, has been in Colombo. Hambantota gets extra cricket instead. Given Sri Lanka have now lost three on the trot at the venue, that may not be much of a condolence prize.Sri Lanka is often thought of as a tough team to beat at home, particularly in limited-overs cricket. But since 2006, they have lost seven bilateral ODI series at home to the six they have won. In the last two years, they have also drawn against New Zealand and Bangladesh.Pakistan now have the chance to inflict a successive ODI series loss on the hosts, after South Africa beat them 2-1 last month. Angelo Mathews already has one eye trained on the World Cup, and had said he would experiment with Sri Lanka’s combination in this series. But he will be tempted to shelve those ambitions for now, and pick his strongest team.Pakistan, meanwhile, are out to get silverware out of this tour. They had seemed sunk on Saturday until two batsmen with fewer than 50 ODIs between them put on a partnership worthy of seasoned one-day cricketers. Perhaps the wisest thing about their 147-run stand was that neither batsman seemed keen to rely on Shahid Afridi.Saturday’s was the kind of win that fills a batting unit with confidence. If they can win a chase from five down, 160 adrift and the required rate touching seven an over, they might feel anything is possible. Moreover, Misbah-ul-Haq now seems to have some level-headed company in the middle order. They will be without their other middle-order anchor though, with Younis Khan returning home due to personal reasons. They will also need to make do without ace spinner Saeed Ajmal for one more match, but even without him, the bowling and batting appears to have the depth and variety to deal with whatever the temperamental Hambantota venue serves up on Tuesday.

Form guide

Sri Lanka: LLWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan: WLWWW

In the spotlight

Upul Tharanga‘s reintroduction to the top teams has been well-earned, but he is still working on locking down a place in both the ODI and Test teams. He top scored in the Test victory at SSC, but the edginess outside off stump that has always been his bane has not yet been fully dealt with. There is now competition for opening spots, across all formats. If Tharanga wants a place in Sri Lanka’s World Cup side, he will need consistent scores.Sohaib Maqsood was the star of Saturday’s chase, but alongside him for much of his innings was Fawad Alam who has begun to carve a niche for himself as the busy engine-room batsman in Pakistan’s middle order. There is nothing eye-catching about Alam’s batting, except an ability to find gaps, and an opportunistic streak that sees him squeeze out runs when most would see none there. He has a bandit’s beard and hairstyle, to match his style of play. Alam has crossed 50 in all his three ODIs this year, and an average of 47.38 after 28 innings suggests Pakistan unearthed something valuable.

Teams news

The only place in Sri Lanka’s top order that does not seem settled is the Dinesh Chandimal-Lahiru Thirimanne spot. Elsewhere, Sri Lanka may be tempted to bring in offspinner Suraj Randiv, if only to prevent Rangana Herath from disintegrating into the molecules that comprise him, given his workload this year.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Lahiru Thirimanne/Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Ashan Priyanjan, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Nuwan Kulasekara 11 Lasith MalingaIn Younis Khan’s absence, Sharjeel Khan and Ahmed Shehzad will open, while Mohammad Hafeez will be pushed down to No.3.Pakistan (probable): 1 Sharjeel Khan, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Umar Akmal (wk), 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Sohaib Maqsood, 8 Shahid Afridi, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Mohammad Irfan

Pitch and conditions

Strong winds are almost always a factor at Hambantota, but the seamers may find something in the pitch under lights as well. Good weather is forecast for the duration of the match.

Stats and trivia

  • Sri Lanka have lost five out of the nine completed matches they have played against Full-Member opposition in Hambantota
  • Mathews has had an outstanding year in ODIs as well, averaging 57.27 with the bat, while contributing economical spells with the ball
  • Pakistan have won 11 matches and lost nine against Sri Lanka since 2010

Quotes

“If one gets going he needs to play well and post a good total for the bowlers to bowl at. We can’t expect all seven to perform well everyday.”

Buck keep league leaders in check

ScorecardNathan Buck kept Worcestershire in check•Getty Images

Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell became the second player to reach 1,000 runs in the current County Championship season before Leicestershire’s bowlers pegged the Division Two leaders back to 317 for 9.Everything was going well as Mitchell and new opening partner Richard Oliver made trouble-free progress in an opening stand of 163 at New Road, but there was surprise in store when paceman Nathan Buck led the Leicestershire revival by taking 3 for 1 in 11 balls.Spinners James Sykes and Dan Redfern shared the spoils as the bottom-of-the-table visitors – without a Championship win in 26 matches – claimed six wickets for 95 runs between lunch and tea.Sykes, who finished with 3 for 72, added two more in the final session, mostly importantly the lbw dismissal of Tom Kohler-Cadmore for 41 after the teenager after steadied Worcestershire in a partnership of 44 in 21 overs with Shaaiq Choudhry.Choudhry, essentially brought in to fill Moeen Ali’s role as a spin bowler, showed his value as a lower-order batsman, making 40 not out from 107 balls, and Saeed Ajmal drove Buck for six before he was dislodged by a lifter from Charlie Shreck for 20Leicestershire’s team selection suggested they had been reading up on the success enjoyed by Ajmal in taking 41 of his 56 wickets for Worcestershire this season on New Road pitches. Regular spinner Jigar Naik was given extra support as the visitors brought in Sykes on the back of a match-winning return of 7 for 80 for the second XI last week, and used Redfern in damaging mini-spells in the afternoon.Yet the early evidence was that a sluggish first-day surface would produce big rewards for batsmen when Worcestershire won the toss for the fifth time in their six home matches.Mitchell slipped into a comfortable groove and Oliver, newly promoted to the Championship side after a successful introduction in the NatWest T20 Blast team, again made a favourable impression with his positive stroke play against the seamers.Mitchell, the 24-year-old left-hander, scored 65 on his debut against Glamorgan in the last four-day match and surpassed that with 78 from 94 balls on his second appearance. Meanwhile, the milestones rolled along for Mitchell, reaching 1,000 for the summer when he had made 54 and 8,000 in his first-class career when on 68.By lunch the partnership was worth 133 but the day was reshaped from the moment Oliver was given out lbw, attempting to sweep Sykes, after hitting a dozen boundaries.Leicestershire captain Josh Cobb then came up with something of masterstroke, calling up Redfern for one over in which Mitchell, having hit 11 fours, was caught behind for 90, aiming to cut the former Derbyshire allrounder. Redfern was immediately replaced by Buck and the new-ball spearhead quickly slipped into attack mode.Tom Fell, shouldering arms, and Ben Cox were bowled by deliveries cutting back and in between Alexei Kervezee gave wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien his second catch. It was a bonus for Leicestershire when Redfern nipped in for second success, bowling Joe Leach a couple of overs before tea.Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket, was delighted for Daryl Mitchell when his captain reached 1000 first-class runs in a season for the third time in his career: “The thing about Mitch is he’s been a good player for a long period. Now he and Moeen Ali in particular have stood up even more this year. It’s nice to see that the better players can improve a little bit more.”Ben Smith, Leicestershire’s senior coach, said: “From where we sat at lunch in the game that was a brilliant effort. It probably took us a little bit of time to get used to bowling on that type of pitch but once we did and started to hold them and chip away with wickets, it went well. Nathan Buck bowled a brilliant spell before tea.”

'Insular' England must reconnect with fans

Alastair Cook, England’s Test and ODI captain, has conceded that the team became “insular” and failed to build up a reserve of public goodwill despite a lengthy period of success

ESPNcricinfo staff03-May-2014Alastair Cook, England’s Test and ODI captain, has conceded that the team became “insular” and failed to build up a reserve of public goodwill despite a lengthy period of success. After a 5-0 Ashes whitewashing brought an end to Andy Flower’s time in charge amid criticism of the team’s attitude and style of play, Cook and the new head coach, Peter Moores, are set to embark on a period of rebuilding England’s reputation on and off the field.England went to Australia in search of a fourth consecutive Ashes victory but ended up losing almost every game on tour, as well as several key players. The home side were backed up by feverish support, as Australia united behind Michael Clarke and Darren Lehmann in their attempts to regain the urn, and Cook picked up on that strength, echoing comments made by Moores in suggesting that England’s new regime would be a more open and accessible one.”Australia connected with their public very well,” he said. “Maybe we became very insular as a side – it worked very well at some points for us but when it wasn’t going well we didn’t have anything to fall back on. The guys in the dressing room are good people, they are nice guys. The public don’t see that enough. Hopefully we can copy Australia a little bit in the way they did it.”We are very lucky – they [England fans] do support us through thick and thin. Just judging on since I have been back they have been very supportive, disappointed about Australia like we all were but hopefully we can reward them for that support now.”Cook’s captaincy, which began with an historic victory in India and included leading England to a 3-0 win over Australia last summer, has also been subject to much scrutiny. Having sat out England’s limited-overs trip to the West Indies and not been involved in a disappointing World T20 campaign, he will resume control in an ODI against Scotland on Friday, before the visits of Sri Lanka and India. He has previously described the changes in the England set-up as providing a “clean break”, intimating that now is the time to build a team in his own image rather than continuing to work along the lines established by Flower and his predecessor, Andrew Strauss, but Cook rejected theories that Flower was too controlling.”I do disagree. What is written and what actually happened is not always accurate,” he said. “Anyone who knows me knows I have an opinion and can be quite stubborn. Flower can also be quite stubborn. You are out there in the middle and you have to make decisions as a captain. Just because you consult other people doesn’t mean you can’t make your own decisions. You still have to make that final decision and are responsible for it.”Although Flower remains with the ECB in a development role, England’s power axis now centres on Cook and Moores. Cook played under Moores during his first spell as England coach and the two have been getting reacquainted in between the early rounds of the Championship.Moores was sacked in 2009 after falling out with Kevin Pietersen, England’s captain at the time, and his style was felt to be overly prescriptive by senior players who had experienced success under Duncan Fletcher. Cook said he felt Moores was “harshly treated” at the end of his reign and was confident that the 51-year-old would not make the same mistakes again.”The meetings with Peter have gone well,” Cook said. “It was about getting to know Peter again and hammering out what he thought my values were and me asking him what his were and getting some middle ground, which wasn’t too hard.”He learned from last time and he will do things slightly differently. Five years extra coaching gives you extra experience. We all do things slightly differently but he’s an energetic and enthusiastic guy who loves cricket and England. We’ve got to use that enthusiasm and drive.”It was going well until the fall out – he’d only been in the job 18 months before the fall out and things changed. When you have grown up in one regime as a senior player and then a new guy comes in, it is difficult – Moores and Duncan Fletcher are obviously completely different guys and have different ideas.”England have cast admiring glances at the work of Stuart Lancaster with the rugby union side and Cook reiterated that they would be looked to as a source of inspiration. “Lessons should be learned from England rugby – huge credit to Stuart Lancaster and the guys for the way they have managed to change things,” he said. “I imagine it’s taken a hell of a lot of effort and work. But I think just the way they have gone about their business shows how they’ve improved. Everyone can see the development in their side.”Following the embarrassing defeat to Netherlands at the World T20, England cannot afford to look beyond next week’s ODI in Aberdeen. However, the news that Matt Prior will miss Sussex’s match against Lancashire beginning on Sunday due to his ongoing Achilles problem is unlikely to have aided planning for next month’s first Sri Lanka Test. Jonny Bairstow, who replaced Prior as wicketkeeper in Melbourne and Sydney, is fit after breaking a finger and was named in Yorkshire’s squad to face Durham.
