Durham open season at the Riverside

The season started at the Riverside with the lowest score made against Durham CCC since the club attained first-class status in 1992

Paul McGregor16-Apr-2001The season started at the Riverside with the lowest score made against Durham CCC since the club attained first-class status in 1992. The owners of this particular record, 67 all out, are now the Durham University Cricket Centre of Excellence – UCCE – playing in their inaugural first-class fixture. A small piece of cricketing history is made with the development of the UCCE’s but performances such as this will do little for the confidence of the students.

Electing to bat after winning the toss on a freezing cold morning, Durham UCCE struggled on a wicket where there seemed plenty of lateral movement for the seam attack. Their first first-class runs came in the fourth over when the 6 foot 10 inch tall Will Jefferson pushed Killeen through the leg side for 3. In the seventh over an edge through slips by the same batter brought up the first boundary but for the most part the going was tough for the students.Jefferson’s opening partner, Michael Brown, did not manage a run in his 46 minute occupation of the crease. Killeen ended his misery by having him caught by the alert Peng at short-leg. It had taken 13 overs to score 18 runs before Brown departed. In the 17th over Peng and Killeen combined in the same way to send back the top scorer Jefferson for 22. Banes had come and gone by this time for no score and there was then little resistance until a ninth wicket partnership of 17 between Bruce and Ferley.Neil Killeen finished with 3 wickets for 14 and he was the pick of the bowlers on a day when every Durham seamer had a wicket. In reply the Durham openers Gough and Lewis were untroubled to a partnership of 50 when Ferley, the left-armer, got a delivery to straighten and trap Gough leg before for 22. The best weather of the day was felt in the last hour of play as spring sunshine reinforced the reputation of this ground as being one of the prettiest in England. Lewis went to one of the easier half-centuries of his career in a leisurely 134 balls making the boundary eight times. At the other end Jimmy Daley remained unbeaten on 30 whilst Lewis had advanced to 61 and the Durham score to 134 for one.The University players cannot be faulted in terms of attitude and spirit but on the evidence of the first days play there is quite a gap between the two sides in terms of technique and application. This is hardly surprising when one side is composed of full time professionals and the other side of those just making their way in the game.

Southampton linked with Ryan Gauld

Southampton are the latest side to have been linked with a move for Ryan Gauld ahead of the summer transfer window, and he could be a superb addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Record, the Saints have joined the race to sign the former Dundee United man after his impressive spell with Portuguese side SC Farense.

The likes of Norwich City, Sheffield United, Brentford, Blackburn Rovers, Swansea City and Brighton have all been linked with the 25-year-old, who is available on a free transfer, as his deal at Estadio de São Luís is set to expire in June.

Would he be a good signing?

Gauld has had a very strange career thus far, signing for Sporting Lisbon from Dundee United when he was just 18-years-old and earning comparisons with Barcelona legend Lionel Messi for his style of play.

Whilst things wouldn’t work out for him with the current Liga NOS champions, as he made just five appearances, he has rebuilt his reputation with Farense in recent seasons.

In 71 appearances for the Portuguese side, he has contributed an impressive 20 goals and 12 assists, including nine goals and seven assists in the most recent season, which helped him average a superb 7.19 rating from WhoScored.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Therefore, it is no surprise that he is attracting interest ahead of the summer transfer window, as he could be a bargain option for any Premier League or Championship side.

There are certainly a lot of similarities between Gauld and Southampton ace Stuart Armstrong, as both were youngsters at Dundee United, both are attack-minded players and both could arrive at St Mary’s in bargain deals, as the Saints paid just £7m for Armstrong from Celtic in 2018, which has certainly proved to be an excellent signing.

Therefore, the potential arrival of Gauld, who has been described as a “top player” by one of his coaches at Farense, could well end up being a repeat of that Armstrong signing, so is one that Martin Semmens should definitely be looking to complete.

And, in other news… £6m down the drain: Southampton potentially cost new signing, Hasenhuttl surely fuming

Ferhat deal would be bad news for Arfield

Rangers have been linked with a move for Nimes winger Zinedine Ferhat recently and if he were to make the move to Ibrox this summer, it could be bad news for the future of Scott Arfield in Steven Gerrard’s side.

According to Foot Mercato (via Daily Record), Rangers are keen on adding the Algerian to their squad ahead of next season’s Champions League qualifiers, after his superb season in Ligue 1.

Despite playing for relegation candidates, the 28-year-old currently sits joint-top of the assist chart in Ligue 1, setting up 10 goals for his teammates, whilst he has also scored six times, which is his best ever season from a goalscoring perspective.

The £7.8m-rated star is predominantly deployed on the right-wing by Nimes but has played in a number of positions in his career, suggesting that he could be a really versatile option in Gerrard’s squad next season.

Assuming that Ferhat would be a starter at Rangers next season should he join this summer, his signing would likely be bad news for Arfield, who has already lost his status as a guaranteed starter this season, making just 11 starts in the Premiership, with the majority of his appearances in Gerrard’s side coming from the bench.

When the former Burnley man first joined Rangers he was often utilised as a winger but has moved more centrally as he has got older and perhaps lost a yard of pace, but unfortunately for him, Ferhat has been utilised centrally and out wide throughout his career, so would perhaps get the nod ahead of him next season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-news-transfer-rumours-and-more-copy-copy” title=“Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more from Ibrox!”]

Gerrard is a big fan of the 32-year-old, and was full of praise for him back in 2018, saying:

“Scott has been superb. He is a great professional and a great lad who is growing each way and contributing really well. He is a really important player and that is the reason we were desperate to get him in the door.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

However, Arfield’s influence has clearly declined this season and the addition of a quality, versatile winger such as Ferhat could well be the final nail in the coffin for the Canadian’s time as a regular starter at Ibrox.

And, in other news… Wilson should seal Rangers swoop for £8m-rated beast, he’s “had a fantastic season”

Wolves fans slam Coady vs Brighton

Many Wolves fans have been slamming the performance of Conor Coady in the first half of their game against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League this afternoon.

The former Liverpool man struggled at times organising his defence against Graham Potter’s men, with Danny Welbeck especially causing him lots of problems with his pace and power.

He failed to get his foot on the ball to clear an inbound header from Lewis Dunk from a corner, which ultimately led to the home side going behind at Molineux. He also failed to win any of his duels in a disappointing first 45 minutes.

Coady will be hoping to have a much better second half under the watchful eyes of Nuno Espirito Santo, as the Wolves manager aims for his team to have a strong finish to a tough season.

Mourinho sends Diego Carlos demand to Spurs

According to a report by Spanish outlet La Razon, Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has personally requested for the club to sign Sevilla colossus Diego Carlos this summer – with the Lilywhites manager appearing very keen on the Brazilian as a solution to his defensive woes.

Mourinho is under increasing scrutiny at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with speculation surrounding his future as Spurs currently face a battle to qualify for European football next season.

Jose Mourinho want Diego Carlos

This is despite a fine start to the 2020/2021 campaign which saw them briefly climb to top of the Premier League table at one point.

As the summer transfer window nears, Mourinho is now reportedly very keen to sign Sevilla powerhouse Diego Carlos in the summer as he eyes new additions to strengthen his defence.

The 28-year-old has a release clause of around €75 million (£64.8 million), and amid the current financial crisis caused by coronavirus, a boost for Spurs could be that the La Liga giants would agree to lower the price if they included Davinson Sanchez in the deal.

Sevilla are apparently ‘obliged to make a big sale’ this summer, and although there is plenty of noise surrounding fellow star centre-half Jules Kounde, they could opt to offload Carlos instead.

Transfer Tavern take

Nicknamed ‘the beast’ with a ‘shade of Kalidou Koulibaly’, as Spanish football analyst Domagoj Kostanjšak explained last year when he was linked with Liverpool (Liverpool Echo), it appears Carlos has continued in that vain this season.

Amassing a round total 90% pass accuracy out from the back in La Liga this season, whilst also averaging the most clearances per 90 out of all Sevilla players with over ten appearances (WhoScored), it is safe to say he has been a consistent presence.

Time will tell what comes of this report, but Mourinho is certainly keen on the signing.

Charlton making mistake over Aneke

Charlton Athletic’s current stance on their out-of-contract stars could leave them quickly heading towards a disaster.

The Addicks stand to lose no fewer than eight first-team players come to the end of the season, and according to Lee Bowyer prior to his exit, the south-east Londoners will wait until they know which division they’ll be in next term.

Ultimately, that’s a very dangerous game to play from director of football Steve Gallen.

One of those players that could leave The Valley for nothing is midfielder-turned-talisman Chuks Aneke.

“I think there will be interest in Chuks. Everyone wants a striker. If we go up I’m guessing he would stay with us. He likes it with us. He is another we have got the best out of, so I couldn’t see why he’d leave if we went up,” explained Bowyer.

The 27-year-old is currently Charlton’s top goalscorer on 13 goals in all competitions, the bulk of which have contributed towards them being firmly in the playoff race.

Of course, the Addicks do not know whether they’ll be competing in the Championship or League One next season, but that shouldn’t stop them from trying to keep hold of their best players and clearly, Aneke falls under that bracket.

After bagging his 13th of the campaign, Bowyer waxed lyrical about the leading talisman, he told LondonNewsOnline: “He was immense up there again today. He’s unplayable, on his day he’s unplayable. To have that hunger and that aggression in the box, that hunger to score every time you get a chance.”

Despite the loan addition of Jayden Stockley, Aneke has continued to be the more prolific source of goals and the more lethal threat in front of goal, where he has averaged a squad-high 2.4 shots per game, via WhoScored.

The former MK Dons ace is only thought to be earning around £5.4k-per-week at The Valley, which is less than veteran midfielder Ben Watson, so it’s not as if finances should be an issue either.

Aneke is the sort of player that newly-appointed Nigel Adkins would probably love to keep around, and as Bowyer says, he probably wants to stay too, so it’s on Gallen to tie him down for the long-term.

The Addicks cannot rest on their laurels, especially with their only other striker – Stockley – due to return to his parent club in the summer. They must offer Aneke a new deal as a priority, or face the ghastly consequences.

Everton scouting Stuttgart’s Kalajdzic

Marcel Brands can secure Carlo Ancelotti his new Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a summer swoop for Everton target Sasa Kalajdzic of VfB Stuttgart.

What’s the word?

While speaking with Give Me Sport, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Toffees are one of several Premier League sides with eyes on Kalajdzic.

The Goodison Park outfit were recently linked with the 24-year-old target man by reports in Italy, which cited Everton and Newcastle United as potential competition for Juventus in the race for the man dubbed the next Erling Haaland.

Kalajdzic has been in sensational form during his first year of German top-flight football, with the Austria international striking 13 goals in 25 Bundesliga games including eight in his last eight outings.

Stuttgart are understood to value Kalajdzic at between €20m and €25m (£17m-£21.5m) and Romano fully expects a Premier League side will present a move in the summer, although it remains to be seen if that is Everton.

“I think yes, he has chances to join Premier League,” Romano said. “To be honest with you, I don’t know about the club because all the clubs you mentioned (Everton, Newcastle and West Ham) are scouting this player, he’s an amazing player.

“At the moment, there is still nothing advanced, but I think yes, he has chances to join the Premier League. A lot of clubs are looking at him.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-everton-news-gossip-and-views” title=”The latest Everton news and views!”]

“So, he’s the typical opportunity and this kind of summer we have after the pandemic, we are obviously in a difficult situation from an economic and financial point of view. Having this kind of opportunity is interesting for English clubs.

“So, I would say yes, I see him as a good opportunity in Premier League, but let’s see if they will pay what the club are asking. So, it’s still so far away, but I think it’s an opportunity.”

Should Everton sign Stuttgart’s Kalajdzic?

Kalajdzic burst out of the gates with three goals in his first three career Bundesliga games back in September before a difficult winter followed, but his form has been incredible since the end of January to now rank sixth in the German top-flight’s scoring charts.

The 24-year-old would have been forgiven for struggling to score prolifically in his first season of Bundesliga action, having missed much of last term due to a cruciate ligament rupture, though that has not been the case.

Kalajdzic’s goals have been a huge factor behind Stuttgart sitting ninth in the table heading into of the international break, with his strikes against Bayer Leverkusen, Union Berlin, Hertha BSC, 1.FC Koln and Eintracht Frankfurt directly returning seven points and avoiding defeat on four occasions.

Stuttgart would be looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone without those points, yet Kalajdzic can have an impact higher up the table in the Premier League next season if Brands were to strike a deal.

Doing so would see Everton’s Director of Football hand Ancelotti his new Ibrahimovic, having taken the Sweden icon – who Kalajdzic has been compared with – to Paris Saint-Germain for £15.5m back in 2012.

Ibrahimovic went on to strike 156 goals in 180 games for PSG across all competitions over four years in the French capital, including 35 in 46 games under Ancelotti during their sole season together.

Kalajdzic, who stands at 6 ft 6 to Ibrahimovic at 6 ft 4, is yet to boast the same record that the 39-year-old already claimed in 2012, but is on course to follow in his footsteps on a path that Brands should strive to see includes a spell at Goodison Park.
