Energised England prepare different script

The project of which Eoin Morgan has been at the helm for little over a year is about to embark on its acid test. Whatever the outcome, few doubt that England, finally, are ready to fizz

Andrew Miller15-Mar-2016Eoin Morgan is a man who revels in inscrutability, but as he strode from the nets at the Wankhede Stadium, it was possible to detect a glint of satisfaction in his eyes. The project of which he has been at the helm for little over a year now embarks on its acid test at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening. Whatever the outcome, few doubt that England, finally, are ready to fizz.On his way to the changing rooms, Morgan paused to pose with a giant England flag bearing a range of good luck messages from fans who sense that something is changing in their country’s attitude to limited-overs cricket. The misery of England’s eviction from the 2015 World Cup is a sufficiently recent memory that few would dare to get too carried away. And yet, there’s no doubt that something is stirring. And, clearly, not before time.”I think this feels different because we’ve a different group of players,” Morgan said. “It’s a new energy, it’s an exciting time for English cricket given the talent that we have in our group, and the attitude in taking the game to the opposition. It certainly feels different in that regard.”The most fundamental shift, Morgan added, is that his post-World Cup England team has offloaded the reticence of the former regime and is now brave enough to “play with no consequences”. It’s an attitude that, as he has previously intimated, could go some way to surmounting their lack of experience in Indian conditions. And to that end, he insists that defeat against a hugely experienced West Indies team would not be the “be-all and end-all”.”Going into any tournament, it’s not about getting out of the traps early and playing your best game first up,” he said. “It’s about pacing yourself and picking up confidence and putting in performances when they really matter. [But] the first game is a tough game – I do agree with that.”West Indies, with wearying familiarity, come into the World T20 to a back-beat of politics and infighting, and yet, with the exception of the injured Kieron Pollard and the blacklisted Sunil Narine, all of their big guns are back out in force for one last tilt at a title that they won in some style only two editions ago.No fewer than eight of the West Indies squad are IPL veterans (compared to the solitary figure of Morgan in England’s camp), and in Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo, West Indies possess two of the most established matchwinners the format has ever known. That is sufficient reason for Morgan to embrace the role of the underdog, and his dead-batted lack of interest in his opponents’ recent issues merely reinforced that position.”They have a number of dangerous players,” Morgan said. “West Indies have been a strong side in the past. They have a number of individual players who are very strong. It’s important for us as a young talented side to focus on what we do best and execute that as part of anything. There are plans in place, but ultimately it’s how we execute them.”Those plans, on what for the moment remains a green-tinged Mumbai surface, look set to revolve around a four-pronged pace attack, with the allrounder Ben Stokes creating wriggle-room in England’s bowling options. Reece Topley is sure to take the new ball and Chris Jordan is set to continue his death-bowling duties following the success of his Yorkers in England’s warm-up matches. Which leaves a toss-up between the height and pace of Liam Plunkett or the left-arm wiles of David Willey for England’s final slot.”You can keep guessing,” Morgan joked. “If you could guess me a few winners at Cheltenham today that’d be great as well.”Of the two, it is Willey who has had the more impact in the course of England’s preparations. His hat-trick while playing for the opposition down the road at the Brabourne Stadium on Monday provided a late varnish to figures that had been somewhat dented at the top of the innings. Plunkett, by contrast, has bowled four overs in two games, and was dumped for 19 in his solitary effort against New Zealand, although his hostility could be vital if the Wankhede pitch has any sort of pace and carry.”Wills swings it up front, comes back into middle and bowls change-ups,” Morgan added. “He has a canny knack of taking wickets, which is something that we’ve struggled doing for a while. But given the circumstances of any pitch, whether it’s two-paced or quick, [Plunkett] is an important player in the squad, with his extra bit of height and different trajectory to everyone else.”If there is one area in which England appear to have an edge over their opponents, it is in the skill and confidence of their legspinner Adil Rashid. His huge development at Adelaide Strikers during the Big Bash is both a boon to England’s prospects of going deep into the tournament, but also a warning that all too few of their players have been similarly exposed in franchise tournaments. But, with Narine’s career in turmoil following the ICC’s clampdown on illegal actions, Rashid’s mystery in the middle overs could prove vital.”It’s a very touchy subject,” said Morgan, a former team-mate of Narine’s at Kolkata Knight Riders. “I know Sunil and I’m not pleased to see what he’s going through, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. He’s bowled the same way since he was 15-16 years old, and the fact that he’s got to this stage of his career and it’s only being looked at now is probably disappointing from his point of view. But there are set rules in place that are being deployed.”As for Rashid, Morgan was happy to back his man to continue his impressive form, but warned that his most significant role might come later in the campaign. “Adil’s come a long way in the last couple of years,” he said. “I know in the nets we find him very hard to pick, let alone play, and I think given the conditions, he and Moeen [Ali] can play a big part, though here I’m not quite sure. It might not turn as much as it does in Delhi.”It’s normally a pretty good batting surface here. Again, it’s another challenge for the bowlers to try to emphasise taking wickets and halting momentum throughout the innings. It’s a challenge we’ve come up against in the past, and will continue to do so in Twenty20 cricket.”

The greatest ODI cricketer: the contenders

Sachin Tendulkar, Wasim Akram, Adam Gilchrist, Viv Richards and MS Dhoni are the leading contenders for the crown of the greatest one-day cricketer of all time, in an exercise conducted by the . The winner – determined by a jury of 50 players, commentators and cricket writers from around the world – will be announced in the March issue of the magazine, published next week. The jury’s choice of the five greatest comprise two gamechanging keeper-batsmen, a magician fast bowler, and two colossal batsmen.Adam Gilchrist’s ODI career spanned only 12 years – 1996 to 2008 – but he set a benchmark for his breed. He rattled along at 97 runs for 100 balls and confirmed his status as an all-time great with a whirlwind 149 that won Australia the World Cup final in 2007.If Gilchrist reinvented the role of a wicketkeeper-batsman, MS Dhoni – the only current player in the top five – has emerged as one of the greatest finishers in ODI cricket. Mixing cheeky running with power-packed, inventive strokeplay, Dhoni has time and again taken India past the finish line. And he played a huge role in two big one-day finals – with the bat in the 2011 World Cup, and with inspired captaincy in the 2013 Champions Trophy.Through the late ’70s and ’80s, one cricketer dominated the limited-overs game like no other, and helped his side to two World Cups along the way. Viv Richards averaged 47 (at a time when batsmen in the top seven averaged 29) and scored at a strike rate of 90 (in an era when the norm was 66). Well before Powerplays and fielding restrictions, Richards punished bowlers with a wide and devastating array of strokes. His electric fielding and fierce captaincy could torment opponents too.If Richards could do anything with a bat, the same could be said of Wasim Akram with the ball. In a career that lasted nearly two decades Akram developed from a young tearaway to a masterful swing bowler who could bowl six different deliveries in an over. He finished with 502 wickets – still comfortably the most for a fast bowler. The day it mattered the most, in March 1992, he finished as Man of the Match. In terms of longevity and batting numbers Sachin Tendulkar has no equal. Starting as a teenage prodigy who batted in the lower middle order, Tendulkar went on to become the definitive oneday opener – firestarting the innings and then settling down to bat long. He ended with a mammoth 18,426 runs and 49 centuries – records that may not be bettered for many years to come. And he won games with the ball too.The ‘s 50-member jury includes legendary cricketers Ian Chappell, Clive Lloyd, Martin Crowe, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith; veteran commentators Tony Cozier, Mark Nicholas, Mike Haysman and Sanjay Manjrekar; and respected writers Gideon Haigh, Mike Coward, Suresh Menon and Mike Selvey.”No one does numbers better than us,” said ESPNcricinfo’s editor-in-chief Sambit Bal, “but we also know that numbers don’t always tell the full story. Which is why we rely on the cumulative wisdom of those who should know for our awards.”And the World Cup was a good occasion to assemble a grand jury – drawn from different eras and countries – to pick the greatest ever one-day cricketer. It’s hard to argue with the top five the poll has thrown up: between them they encapsulate the best of ODI cricket across the ages and also its evolution.”The March issue of the published on Tuesday, 10 March, will include full results of the poll, celebrations of the top five, an interview with the winner of the title, and more.

Efficient Sixers blow Hurricanes away

A strong bowling effort followed by a well-constructed chase helped the Sydney Sixers beat the Hobart Hurricanes and move alongside the Adelaide Strikers at the top of the Big Bash League table

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMoises Henriques won the Man of the Match award•Getty ImagesA strong bowling effort followed by a well-constructed chase helped the Sydney Sixers beat the Hobart Hurricanes and move alongside the Adelaide Strikers at the top of the Big Bash League table.Chasing 155 after afternoon rain delayed the toss and reduced the match to 19 overs, Nic Maddinson gave the Sixers a blistering start with 29 off just 12 deliveries. The introduction of Xavier Doherty in the third over took pace off the ball, but Maddinson exercised no restraint, charging down the pitch to the first ball he faced and chipped it to long-off.Sixers’ new signing Riki Wessels, who had replaced the absent Dwayne Smith in the squad days before the start of the season, had time to play himself in. Some clinical boundary-hitting at the other end from Michael Lumb and urgent running maintained the Sixers’ strong start, ending the five-over Powerplay at 53 for 1 and reaching the ninth at 86 for 1.Lumb chipped a short ball from Joe Mennie off his hips in the 10th over towards a backtracking Alex Hales in the deep, but the fielder only succeeded in palming it over the ropes. Three balls later though, Wessels holed out to long-on for 22 and Lumb followed him in the 11th over for 44 and the match had been given a twistMoises Henriques and Jordan Silk batted with calm and poise. Although they did not strike a single boundary for their first 4.5 overs together, they managed to reduce the equation to 27 from 21 with some good running. Silk’s first four began the Sixers’ procession to victory and three overs later, with the warmly wrapped-up locals already heading for the turnstiles and Bailey hardly trying to take wickets or put pressure on, they reached the target with seven wickets in hand and 11 balls to spare. With a shallow batting order, the Sixers will hope the maturity shown in the chase is displayed throughout the season. The unchanged Hurricanes, having chosen to bat, probably did not make full use of a good pitch with small boundaries. But starting their innings under cloudy skies and soon after some heavy rain probably didn’t help. Bailey was the lone reason for their total of 154, scoring 71 off 44 where the rest of the team managed 80 off 70.Hales was dismissed in the first over when he charged Brett Lee and spliced a short ball to point. Hales has played two innings for his new club the Hurricanes and has managed one run from six balls. Ben Dunk and Tim Paine dragged the Hurricanes to 42 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay before Dunk fell in the seventh over to an ugly heave. A tidy, low catch soon after from wicketkeeper Ryan Carters ended Paine’s innings for at 36.Bailey began cautiously, scoring 12 of his first 14 balls, but took control once he lost his partners Jonathan Wells and Darren Sammy in the middle overs. He struck 59 from his next 30 balls to record his highest T20 score. When Bailey was dismissed he cast a lonely figure walking towards the pavilion. His wicket was the first of three to fall from the final three balls of the innings, two to Lee and one a run out, as the Hurricanes finished on 154 for 8. Henriques, who was named Man of the Match, collected impressive figures of 2 for 22 from his four overs, while Lee, who has started the season excellently, took 3 for 34.

Klinger signed by Warriors

Michael Klinger will move to Western Australia for next summer, as the man to plug the gap left in the Warriors’ squad by the retirement of Marcus North. A two-year contract with WA lured 33-year-old Klinger westward, though he still had a season of his existing deal with South Australia left to run.The news of Klinger’s signature will be a relief for the Warriors coach Justin Langer, who has been working to find a senior pro following North’s surprising decision to finish his Australian first-class career after a summer’s renaissance as an opening batsman. Having moved to SA from Victoria in 2008 in an effort to supercharge his fortunes, Klinger has developed a reputation as a solid citizen and capable leader, also guiding Gloucestershire in England.”I am very grateful for the opportunity the Western Warriors have given me,” Klinger said. “I am looking forward to working with Justin and the coaching staff as well as joining the senior players in helping to guide this very exciting young group of talented cricketers to achieve success.”It’s sad to leave my teammates in South Australia, many of whom I have forged life long friendships with, but I am excited for what the future holds in WA. My wife and two young children along with myself are looking forward to calling Perth home.”In his time with the Redbacks, Klinger twice won the state player of the year award on Allan Border Medal night, while also taking home a trio of Neil Dansie medals as SA’s most outstanding player. His captaincy garlands included the 2011 Big Bash and 2012 domestic limited overs titles, the first silverware won by SA since their last Sheffield Shield in 1996.In all, Klinger has tallied 4,243 first-class runs for SA at 42.86 while also collecting 10 centuries. His record in limited overs matches has been similarly handsome. The Redbacks’ loss will now be the Warriors’ gain, not only in terms of runs but also the diligent example Klinger will set for the younger players he trains and performs alongside.”It is obviously sad to lose someone of Michael Klinger’s quality, and a player who has given a great deal to South Australian cricket,” SA high performance manager Jamie Cox said. “Michael had a one-year deal remaining here in South Australia, but the Warriors were able to offer him a longer-term contract.”We understand Michael’s desire for contract security, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”Klinger’s move to the Warriors will make him part of Langer’s plans to build a dynasty of success with WA, a goal the team took a first step towards by making this year’s Shield final where they were thwarted by New South Wales. SA have meanwhile secured the return home of Mark Cosgrove, who had departed to Tasmania four years ago.

'Wasn't expecting such a big amount' – Karthik

Dinesh Karthik, who was the second-biggest buy in the IPL auction, said he was not expecting to attract such a big bid

Vishal Dikshit12-Feb-2014When his name went under the hammer for the IPL auction, Dinesh Karthik was sitting a few kilometers away, in the dressing room at the Chinnaswamy stadium, feeling disappointed with himself. He had just played on to a delivery from Vinay Kumar and walked back for 27, following a first-innings score of 91 in the Irani Cup match against Karnataka. His Rest of India team were on their way to a heavy defeat.Minutes later, someone in the dressing room yelled out that Karthik had been sold for Rs. 12.50 crore ($2.08 million) to Delhi Daredevils.”Somebody in the dressing room was just screaming that I went for such a price so that’s how I heard,” Karthik told ESPNcricinfo. “Very happy, definitely very happy and I wasn’t expecting such a big amount. Actually, I came to know a bit later as we didn’t have access to television in the dressing room.”Karthik attracted the second-highest bid on the first day of the auction, behind Yuvraj Singh’s Rs 14 crore ($2.33 million) bid from Royal Challengers Bangalore. Last year, playing for the victorious Mumbai Indians, Karthik amassed 510 runs with two fifties at a strike-rate of 124.08 and featured in all the 19 matches Mumbai played. Kings XI Punjab had bought him in the 2011 auction for $900,000, and he had moved to Mumbai in a pre-auction transfer in 2012, in exchange for Rajagopal Sathish, for an undisclosed sum. Now, Karthik is back in Delhi, for whom he had played for the first three seasons, but as part of a completely new Daredevils squad that features another marquee player, Kevin Pietersen.”I’m happy I’m back in Delhi but definitely I had a great time in Mumbai,” Karthik said. “I’ll miss the franchise, I had a great time there.”I think it will be wonderful. He [Pietersen] is a legend so it’s going to be great to share the dressing room with him and he’ll have a lot of things and inputs to say and It’ll be great to play with him.”Even though Karthik will be pleased with the big contract, not being part of India’s World T20 squad will have been a letdown, especially since he had been named among the 30 probables. But Karthik said he would continue to try and do well in whatever matches he plays.”I think I just missed the bus so there’s nothing else to it,” he said. “I just need to perform better and get back to the team. If I do well in IPL, it will be a good thing to happen. At the same time it’s important I score runs even in domestic cricket and everywhere else I play. I’ve got a few matches to come now and I’ll try and do the best in those series and take it from there.”

Gazi Tank loss gives Prime Doleshwar chance at title

A century from Gazi Tank Cricketers‘ captain Mahmudullah was in vain as the side lost by 54 runs to Mohammedan Sporting Club, squandering a chance to seal their maiden title triumph in the Dhaka Premier Division. With Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club beating Kalabagan Cricket Academy, the last league round game between Gazi Tank and Prime Doleshwar SC on November 27 is a virtual final as both teams have 20 points from their games so far. The team with the most points at the end of the Super League will win the Dhaka Premier Division title.Set a target of 269, Gazi Tank were struggling at 7 for 3 in the fourth over, before Mahmudullah led the side’s recovery. He was involved in key partnerships with opener Imrul Kayes, Ryan Ten Doeschate and Ashar Zaidi for the fourth, fifth and sixth wickets, respectively, before falling a 125-ball 106. Mahmudullah’s second List A hundred included 12 fours and two sixes. His wicket in the 41st over, however, ended Gazi Tank’s resistance and they folded in the 42nd over for 214.Earlier, a 109-run third wicket stand between Upul Tharanga and Samit Patel and a cameo from Mashrafe Mortaza helped Mohammedan SC post 268 for 6. Tharanga and Patel came together at the fall of Shamsur Rahman’s wicket in the 19th over and the pair batted for the next 20 overs, Tharanga scored 62 off 90 balls while Samit Patel was out for 76 off 90 balls. Mortaza, who came in to bat in the 47th over, blasted a 15-ball 37 with six fours and a six before his fall in the last over.Dawid Malan’s fourth List A hundred helped Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club go level on points with Gazi Tank Cricketers in the Super League table, after securing a 15-run win over Kalabagan Cricket Academy in Fatullah.Malan’s 120-ball 123 included eight fours and six sixes, as he helped Prime DSC overcome a shaky start in which their openers, as well as Rony Talukder were all dismissed within 10 overs, leaving the team at 42 for 3. Malan was involved in two big partnerships – an 80-run stand for the fourth wicket with Mominul Haque and a sixth-wicket partnership of 104 runs with Sabbir Rahman – that eventually propelled the team to 287 for 7 in their 50 overs.KCA began poorly with the openers Avishek Mitra and Zakaria Masud both departing after 4.1 overs. They were precariously placed at 7 for 2, but Hamilton Masakadza and Marshall Ayub led the recovery, adding 123 runs in 21.2 overs for the third wicket. KCA were stable at 130 for 2, but Masakadza fell for a run-a-ball 69 in the 26th over, while Ayub lost his wicket for 67 in the 33rd. In between those two dismissals, Abdul Mazid had also been run-out for one to leave KCA at 159 for 5. Sharifullah’s late surge – a 55-ball 72 – was not enough for KCA as Prime DSC restricted them to 272 for 8.Mushfiqur Rahim led Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club‘s charge once again, scoring a brisk 82 before Nahidul Islam and Elton Chigumbura took the side to a narrow, two-wicket win over Prime Bank Cricket Club.Chasing a target of 257, Dhanmondi Club were struggling at 73 for 4, before Mushfiqur stepped up and added 107 runs with Tanveer Haider for the fifth wicket. The pair, however, were dismissed in successive overs, Mushfiqur falling for 82 off 74 balls, with the score at 180 for 6. However, Nahidul and Chigumbura added 61 in nearly 10 overs to take the side closer to the target. Chigumbura remained unbeaten on 28 off 35 balls as Dhanmondi edged to victory with three balls to spare.Earlier, half-centuries from Ravi Bopara and Taibur Rahman helped Prime Bank reach 256 for 6 after the side were struggling at 64 for 3. Bopara and Taibur added 114 runs for the fourth wicket and Taibur finished unbeaten on 89 off 103 balls with seven fours and two sixes.
