PCB summons Misbah, Waqar for review

PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan has summoned Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore for a review of the team’s performances in Sri Lanka

PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan has summoned Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq and the head coach Waqar Younis to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday for a review of the team’s performances in Sri Lanka. Shaharyar will meet the team manager Moin Khan in Karachi on Wednesday. Pakistan lost the Test series 2-0 and the ODIs 2-1 to Sri Lanka, prompting concern from the board ahead of the 2015 World Cup.ESPNcricinfo understands the meetings will be on a one-on-one basis. Misbah has Shaharyar’s backing for the captaincy ahead of series in the UAE against Australia and New Zealand, but the PCB could reduce the 10-man coaching staff. Moin’s dual role as manager and chief selector is also under scrutiny. The pool of players that traveled to Sri Lanka remains the nucleus of the World Cup probables but the PCB is concerned about team unity, which according to one official, had deteriorated. With less than six months to go to the tournament, the PCB is reluctant to make major changes, and Moin had said Misbah would stay captain until the World Cup. However, ESPNcricinfo understands some players are not in favour of such a view. The PCB persisted with Misbah as captain despite Pakistan being whitewashed 3-0 in South Africa in 2012-13, and performing poorly in the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. This was largely because of his prolific form in 2013, when he was the top-scorer in ODIs. However, he is 40 now, and his form has not been as good in 2014.There has been speculation in the media that a lobby is trying to bring about a change in captain, with Shahid Afridi being proposed as the favourite. Afridi’s form, however, has been poor. He has been wicketless in his last six ODIs and his batting is unpredictable.Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf was one of the voices advocating Afridi as captain. “If the captaincy remains with Misbah you can’t expect improvement in results,” Yousuf said. “He has been the captain for four years and has not been able to find a proper combination. I think it is imperative we have Afridi, who is aggressive and can lead in a better way.”

Wright and Beer earn grand home finish

Luke Wright hit three sixes and seven fours as his swashbuckling 66 off 39 balls dented Glamorgan’s NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final hopes and powered Sussex to a five-wicket win at Hove.Wright virtually settled the match, as Sussex chased down Glamorgan’s 151 for 8, by clubbing Jacques Rudolph’s legspin for three fours and a six in a 13th over that cost 19 runs.Hethen fell to the first ball of the next over, with Dean Cosker taking a juggling catch at midwicket from a pull against Andrew Salter’s offspin, but only another 36 runs were then required from 41 balls as Wright walked off to great acclaim from a near-5,000 crowd.Matt Machan, with 33 not out from 35 balls, then eased Sussex home with nine balls to spare as they ended on 153 for 5. Sussex’s fifth win of the group stage still keeps their mathematical chances of last eight qualification intact, while Glamorgan may live to regret their fourth defeat as they battle to get out of the fiercely-contested South Group.Glamorgan, who would have gone second in the group table if they had won, were also undone by Will Beer’s legspin as his brilliant four-over spell of 3 for 14 pegged them back when they looked to be on course for a challenging total.Having won the toss, Glamorgan were given a superb start by Rudolph and skipper Jim Allenby, on form the best opening pair in the T20 Blast this season. At the end of the six-over Powerplay Glamorgan were 57 without loss, with Rudolph setting the tone by taking three fours from the opening over, bowled by left-arm seamer Lewis Hatchett. Rudolph caressed the first ball of the match to the extra cover boundary for four, and there were also classy boundaries through square cover and midwicket as 16 runs in all came from the over. The third over, from Chris Liddle, cost 12 more before Allenby pulled the returning Hatchett out of the ground over mid-wicket for six – the ball clattering into the brickwork of one of the block of flats that line one side of the Hove ground.Beer’s introduction, however, slowed Glamorgan’s progress and his first victim, in the seventh over, was Allenby. Bowled for 24, inside-edging an attempted slog-sweep, he has now scored 474 runs from 10 innings in this year’s T20 competition at an average of 52.66.Mark Wallace was Beer’s next scalp, bowled for 3 as he missed an ambitious reverse sweep, and the 25-year-old leg spinner then tossed one up a little bit higher to have Stewart Walters smartly caught and bowled for a duck when the batsman could not keep down a straight drive. It was not long before big-hitting Chris Cooke was also back in the pavilion, holing out to Craig Cachopa at deep square leg as he mishit a pull at Steffan Piolet’s medium pace.At 79 for 4, in the 11th over, Glamorgan’s innings was in danger of spluttering out, but after Beer’s excellent spell a fifth wicket stand of 50 between Rudolph and Murray Goodwin revived it.Goodwin, in his 41st year and playing against the county he left in 2012 after 12 seasons, was given a good reception by the crowd and reached 35 from 24 balls as he pulled a Piolet full toss for six and also plundered successive fours from Chris Nash’s offspin. After Goodwin fell to the last ball of the 17th over, miscueing to long on, Rudolph was bowled by Steve Magoffin for 62 off a thin inside edge in the following over.Magoffin was making his T20 debut for Sussex in his third season with the club and it was only the ninth short-form game of his career. Indeed, the last time the country’s current leading County Championship wicket-taker played a Twenty20 match was five-and-a-half years ago.Sussex lost Nash and Luke Wells early but Cachopa, a 24-year-old trialist, hit a six and three fours to impress in a quickfire 24, before being stumped advancing at Cosker’s left-arm spin, while Wright was always in command.Nash, the Sussex captain, said: “It was nice to be able to win our last group home game. Our crowds have been brilliant all season for Twenty20, even though we haven’t performed as well as we would have liked overall.”I was also glad Will Beer was in at the end and hit the winning boundary. He has been exceptional with both ball and bat in this competition, and he deserved that moment of getting us over the line here.”Glamorgan skipper Allenby added: “I always thought our total was on the low side. Around 160 would have been par, but Will Beer bowled exceptionally well to peg us back and full credit to him for that.”We are still in contention to finish in the top four in the group, however, and I’m happy with that with two games still to go.”

Wright, Bird power Stars to win in opener

After losing to the Melbourne Renegades twice last season, the Melbourne Stars exacted revenge on their cross-town rivals in dazzling style on the opening night of the Big Bash League 2013-14

The Report by Alex Malcolm20-Dec-2013
ScorecardAfter losing to the Melbourne Renegades twice last season, the Melbourne Stars exacted revenge on their cross-town rivals in dazzling style on the opening night of the Big Bash League. The Stars did so on the back of a dominant batting display. Put in to bat on a superb track at the MCG, with short boundaries, the Stars climbed into the Renegades bowlers.Openers Luke Wright (70 from 32 balls) and Cameron White (53 from 38) clubbed 94 runs in the first eight overs to set up the match. The pair were particular severe on Will Sheridan, who conceded 45 in his first two overs. The Stars showed their depth in the batting line-up as Glenn Maxwell, Brad Hodge and David Hussey were able to waltz in one after the other and swing freely from the outset.Luke Wright paired with Cameron White to take Melbourne to 94 for 0 in eight overs•Getty ImagesThe only Renegades bowler to escape punishment was Muttiah Muralitharan who conceding 23 runs in four overs and bagged the key scalp of Wright. The Renegades pain was compounded further when fast bowler Jayde Herrick suffered a side strain mid-way through the 19th over. Sheridan was asked to complete the over and, although he claimed the wicket of Marcus Stoinis with his second ball, the first ball he bowled disappeared over the wide long-off rope. The Renegades chase hinged on the Stars nemesis, Aaron Finch. Jackson Bird, making a comeback after a lengthy lay-off due to stress fractures, was greeted by Finch with a powerful lofted six over cover-point. Finch found the boundary on four more occasions thereafter and threatened to spoil the party once again. However, the opener lacked support as he lost three partners during his stay, before he fell to a sensational catch from David Hussey.Englishman Jos Buttler followed Wright’s lead with some clean striking during a brisk 49. But the Renegades fell well short, Bird finishing as the chief destroyer with 4 for 31. Maxwell capped the Stars’ win, contributing to the last three wickets with two good catches and a run-out off a direct hit.A crowd of 25,266 was around 10,000 short of expectations, though there will be as much interest at Cricket Australia in the size of the television audience for the first BBL fixture to be broadcast on a free-to-air network since the competition’s inception.

Harris confident of fitness ahead of Ashes

Ryan Harris is confident he will be fit ahead of the Ashes after receiving encouraging results from scans on his injured Achilles tendon

Daniel Brettig and Brydon Coverdale26-Apr-2013Ryan Harris is confident he will be fit ahead of the Ashes after receiving encouraging results from scans on his injured Achilles tendon. This week, Harris was named in Australia’s 16-man Ashes squad but he also flew home from the IPL due to the injury, which, if more serious, might have placed his England tour in jeopardy. However, scans and the inspection of Cricket Australia’s chief medical officer Justin Paolini showed that Harris’ Achilles is not seriously injured, with an early estimate of six to eight weeks on the sidelines described by Harris as “the worst case scenario”. It is more likely that Harris will be bowling again in three to four weeks, winning him time to play well before the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.”Australia A isn’t discounted just yet either,” Harris told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve got to do some serious rehab and the doctor’s confident that 6-8 weeks is the worst case scenario – if I do things right I could be right in a couple of weeks. The good thing is there is time to get it right and then bowl some overs. I’ll have something under my belt for England.”It’s very disappointing to leave the IPL because as I said from the start it was crucial for me to keep bowling, but this is something I’ve had on and off for a long time and it’s just flared up. The last four weeks of the season in Australia it was all fine. It’s disappointing to leave Kings XI, but my main priority is obviously England.”Harris had felt Achilles discomfort for some time, and initially was left out of the Kings XI starting line-up for reasons of team balance rather than his inability to bowl with the ailment. But as the team met a succession of unhelpful pitches, Harris decided in concert with the Kings XI and Queensland coach Darren Lehmann that an early flight home was the best option.”I knew anyway it wasn’t going to be too bad, purely because I played at the end of the season here and then went over to play games over there,” Harris said. “To be honest the reason I hadn’t played since the 14th wasn’t really to do with that, it was more about the make up of the team and the wickets we were playing on.Ryan Harris has had to leave the IPL but says he should be fit ahead of the Ashes•Associated Press”Boof [Lehmann] had a think about it, I was a little bit more sore than I’d been at the end of the season. So the potential of me maybe only playing another three games, we got together and thought the best thing to do would be to come home and get right.”Having spent all but the final few weeks of the 2012-13 season recovering from shoulder surgery, Harris was delighted by both the renewal of his CA contract and the public statements of the captain Michael Clarke and the national selector John Inverarity that he had a key role to play in the Ashes if fit. He has resolved to repay that faith.”It’s very rewarding to know your captain and chairman of selectors back you and have a lot of confidence in you,” Harris said. “That’s why it’s so important for me to get fit and play as many games as they need me to play. That’s me repaying them for the faith they’re putting in me.”The last year has been terrible, and getting another CA contract for me is just another chance, and there’s no better series to get that second chance than in an Ashes series. I’m that keen, that enthusiastic and that hungry to get back in that series, win the Ashes back and repay them.”As for injury being Harris’ almost constant companion, he admitted to wondering when he might be blessed with a clear six months in which to deliver the sort of high quality bowling that has made him respected by batsmen around Australia and the world.”It’s fair to say a few things go through my mind – someone upstairs has got to give me a decent run somehow before I finish,” he said. “It’s not as if I’m tearing hamstrings or calves, the things I’m doing are structural things, purely through what I do. You get to the stage where you get a niggle and push yourself through that until it becomes something else, and that’s when you stop. You push yourself to the maximum every time you bowl.”If you mindset gets negative then you’ve probably got to make the decision in calling it quits, but I’m not ready to do that yet. I’ll do whatever I can to get right, especially for a series like England.”
