West Ham’s Robert Snodgrass proves he’s no longer up to the task in Scotland loss

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

While it was always going to be a tough game against Belgium, Scotland international Robert Snodgrass looked to have the perfect opportunity to prove to West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini why he should be starting on the right wing in Michail Antonio’s injury absence.

He may have got the nod against Brighton, but it was Andriy Yarmolenko that featured in the XI there in the subsequent wins against Watford and Norwich City, scoring against the latter.

Snodgrass therefore could have done with a positive showing on Monday to stake his claim for a spot in the east London outfit’s side that looks to be firmly up for grabs, but he failed to take it and was even slated by Scotland fans for his display.

While you can never question the £10.2m man’s endeavour and high work rate, he does often leave a lot to be desired when it comes to showing some actual quality.

Granted, he did have an impressive passing accuracy of 93% against Roberto Martinez’s men, as per SofaScore, but he also came up short in many other areas.

For example, he committed five fouls – more than anyone else on the pitch – and lost possession on 14 occasions – more times than any of his teammates.

He failed to impress from an attacking sense either when his country needed him, with just one of his eight crosses proving to be accurate on a day when Scotland needed to be at their best to get anything.

As we mentioned previously, Snodgrass has some attributes that make him an attractive proposition for a manager – and one that Pellegrini has heavily utilised in the past – but his latest international display was just another sign that he should be a fringe player and nothing more at West Ham from here on in.

If the Irons really are serious about breaking into the top six in the Premier League, they need players on the pitch with proven quality, and the 32-year-old simply doesn’t cut the mustard any longer.

Loan exit for Philippe Coutinho would be ideal for Barcelona

[ad_pod ]

As we approach the beginning of La Liga this Friday with the curtain-raiser between Barcelona and Atheltic Bilbao, one player is looking increasingly unlikely to feature in the squad.

Philippe Coutinho’s Barcelona career, is slowly but surely running its course and a departure from the club now looks likely. Of course, that deal is closely connected to the reported return of Neymar to Barcelona, which would see one Brazilian arriving at the Camp Nou with his fellow compatriot moving in the opposite direction.

But among all those stories putting Coutinho in Paris Saint-Germain colours, more recently a piece of news broke out claiming that Germany could in fact be Coutinho’s destination. Of course, it would seem no Bundesliga club can actually afford the little magician bar one single club – Bayern Munich. And the Bavarians are indeed interested but are looking at the prospect of a loan deal rather than a permanent one.

Financially speaking, and this is especially true for players of such high value as Coutinho, a loan would, at first glance at least, be the more sensible option.

Upon further inspection, however, it hardly makes sense for the buyer, in our case – Bayern Munich. But let’s start with why Barcelona would profit from it immensely.

This part might seem the more obvious one but it has to be said as well. Coutinho’s form at the club has been questionable ever since he arrived at the club.

For the majority of his time with the La Liga giants he’s been utilised as a left-winger, a position he is neither an expert in nor is he at his most exhilarating in. Of course, a lot of it depends on the system the club uses but, in general, he is more comfortable as a number ten with the freedom to roam the edge of the box.

With Lionel Messi in the team, however, it started to become painfully obvious Coutinho would just step on the Argentine’s toes while doing his signature cutting inside and roaming. For that reason, he was chained to the left flank and forever underutilised as a player. But I digress. The point is that Barcelona now want to offload him and either recoup some of the money, free up an additional spot in the squad, relieve some of that wage bill or finally, avoid further payments to Liverpool.

And this last one is the one people seem to forget. When the Brazilian arrived from Anfield, the Merseyside team made sure to put various clauses in his contract so that they would get as much money for their talisman as possible. Most of these were related to Coutinho’s appearances, contribution to the team and trophies won. With Coutinho out of the club, none of these variables would be met, at least not now that the club is so desperately trying to recoup as much money for other, more costly, deals they’re working on.

But there’s also the question of the 27-year-old’s form. If he goes to Bayern, or any other club for that matter, and returns to his brilliant best, Barcelona would be getting a player reborn come next season. It’s an ideal situation. His value would rise and the Catalans would end up with more money or, perhaps, a better player to utilise for their own benefit.

For those reasons, regardless of the loan working out or not, it’s a win-win scenario for them.

Then we come to the other side of the coin, which is the buyer’s point of view. For the sake of the argument, let’s divide the possible outcome in purely black and white scenarios: either the loan works out perfectly, meaning the player performed extremely well or the opposite, with Coutinho failing at his new club too.

In the first case scenario, Bayern (or someone else) get a brilliant player for a year and he helps them immensely. But come the end of the season, they have to send him back and since he performed so well, they will have to pay a premium for his services.

Effectively, a series of great performances would play right into Barcelona’s hands. Not only would the Catalans get back a reinvigorated player, as we’ve already touched upon, but they would also be in a better bargaining position if the potential suitor was keen to make the deal permanent.

The scenario in which Coutinho doesn’t do well is clearly also bad for the buying club. They’re paying the wages of a really expensive player throughout the year and his poor performances would put a permanent deal out of the question.

From this standpoint, it would be easy to conclude that loan deals, in general, don’t make much sense. For big clubs, they often don’t. The only way of actually bypassing this “trap” is by inserting clauses that give the buyer an option of a fixed price upon the end of the loan.

That way, regardless of the performance of the loanee, you’re still paying the same price and doing so only if you deem it worth your money. And seeing how Coutinho’s form has dropped, a fairly decent price could, in theory, be negotiated.

The last thing Bayern or another interested party want to do is give Barcelona any power in this deal. It remains to be seen, however, whether that will be the case or not.

Crystal Palace must not consider Christian Benteke sale until Dougie Freedman acts

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Turkish media outlet Fanatik, Fenerbahce would like to sign Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke, but the Eagles must not consider an exit until sporting director Dougie Freedman does one thing.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Fanatik report that the Turkish giants are looking to carry on their summer signing spree by bringing in another two or three players on top of the six they have already added to their squad, and Benteke is one of those they are keen on.

The report suggests that Fenerbahce’s director of football Damien Comolli is keen to sort a loan deal for the Belgium international with an option to buy, which may well be tempting for the south London outfit if the money is right given he only has a year remaining on his contract.

Watch Crystal Palace Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The 28-year-old only scored once in 19 appearances in all competitions last term, and has turned into something of a goal-shy striker in recent seasons – he only found the net three times in 2017/18, too.

What does Freedman need to do?

The Scot needs to do something that he has only done once this summer, and that is deliver a new signing for manager Roy Hodgson.

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

While they could receive a decent proposal for the big centre-forward, they can’t even think about letting him go until they sign a new striker.

With Michy Batshuayi returning to Chelsea at the end of a loan spell, Palace have been left with the Belgian, Connor Wickham and Alexander Sorloth as their senior options up top.

The latter has been something of a flop at Selhurst Park so far and has failed to find the net in 16 Premier League appearances, while Wickham has had a nightmare when it has come to injuries and has only made 42 outings in all competitions in his four years in south London.

The Eagles look to need a striker whatever happens, but there is no doubt that they need one ready and in place if they are to consider an offer for Benteke. They shouldn’t be entertaining any bids until a new body has put pen to paper and his holding that red and blue shirt up at SE25.

Liverpool fans debate Hakim Ziyech after latest transfer revelation

[ad_pod ]

Back in April, The Daily Mail reported that Ajax star Hakim Ziyech was being chased by a number of clubs including Liverpool.

The forward was outstanding during their Champions League run to the semi-final and it’s no surprise to see how sought after he is.

In May, BBC claimed that Ajax would let him go this summer after coming to an agreement and now the fee they are seemingly willing to take is a minimum of €30m (£26.8m), per De Telegraaf.

As a result, Liverpool fans flocked to Twitter to react to the news and urge their club to now get a deal done.

One supporter claimed he was cheap and versatile whilst another suggested he’d be perfect for Liverpool.

A further fan claimed the club would be foolish if the Reds didn’t now try to sign him. One individual assessed that he’d be useful in terms of adding to their squad depth.

The 26-year-old scored 21 goals in 49 games last term whilst also racking up an incredible 24 assists.

In terms of his Champions League stats, he contributed to six goals.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

An ode to Liverpool’s Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres has announced his retirement after 18 special years in the game that included 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool between 2007 and 2011.

El Nino recently announced his retirement via social media telling his Twitter followers, “after 18 exciting years, the time has come put an end to my football career.”

Indeed, Torres joined Rafael Benitez’s Liverpool in 2007, and while he only spent four seasons at Anfield before making an ill-fated move to Chelsea in 2011, the impact he left on both fans of the club and admirers of the beautiful game is still felt today.

Perhaps the striker’s career will be defined by his record-breaking move to Stamford Bridge for £50m or his life-long connection to Atletico Madrid but few would doubt the initial impact he had on English football when he moved to Liverpool. Described by Steven Gerrard as the best striker in the world back in 2009 and the quickest man to reach the 50-goal landmark in a red shirt before the arrival of Mo Salah, he really was a force to be reckoned with.

With that and his imminent departure from football in mind, we’re going to take a look at two of the Spaniard’s most prolific games in the famous red jersey.

Liverpool 4 – 0 West Ham United: Wednesday 5 March 2008

Torres became the first Liverpool player in more than 60 years to score successive hat-tricks at Anfield, when he netted against the helpless Hammers.

The range of goals he scored encapsulated everything he was as a striker. The first, pinged into him from the right flank by Dirk Kuyt required the deftest of touches to guide it into the left-hand side of goal with pinpoint accuracy. The second, a headed goal, utilised his aerial ability (albeit he was planted firmly on the ground), while the third was a combination of class finishing and apex predator-like anticipation.

Prime Torres.

Manchester United 1 – 4 Liverpool: Saturday 14 March 2009

It’s one thing to beat bitter rivals Manchester United, but it’s something totally different to thrash them.

While Cardiff City recently claimed a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford, ‘back then’ it wasn’t the kind of place you simply waltzed into and won; Ferguson was renowned for influencing referees and getting his own way and United, for all intents and purposes, were arguably a far better team back then as well, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Carlos Tevez and Edwin van der Sar all still in their prime.

When Torres touched down, the Red Devils were in pole position to secure the Premier League title with a seven-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the table, with a game in hand and the end of the season fast approaching.

Ronaldo gave the home side an early lead via the penalty spot, but their joy didn’t last long as Torres stepped up and kick-started the rout. In typical fashion, the Spaniard used his pace, sophisticated football brain and lethal finishing ability to capitalise on a calamitous Vidic error by slotting the ball past Edwin van der Sar.

A day to remember.

Klopp’s move for Southampton man is as sensible a decision he could make this summer: Opinion

Liverpool are heading into the summer on the back of landing a sixth European Cup after the Reds finally got their rewards for two years worth of superb football.

The Reds and manager Jurgen Klopp are in a good place in all honesty, and barring a disaster in terms of losing some their top players, not much is needed in terms of squad investment to ensure the club remain right at the summit of the game.

However, if there was one position that could do with adding too, it’s in goal, where number two Simon Mignolet is nowhere near on the level of main stopper Alisson, who has been simply superb since being brought into the club last summer.

This weekend then has seen the club linked with a move for Southampton stopper Alex McCarthy, and here in the Tavern, we couldn’t think of a better signing for the club.

McCarthy might have lost his place in the Saints XI to Angus Gunn, but the 29-year-old had earlier in the campaign displayed the type of form which showed he can play at the very top, earning himself an England call up along the way.

Belgian Mignolet has never ever produced the goods for the Reds either, and his onrunning battle with Loris Karius last season was blamed for the club’s lack of success in the end, with both ‘keepers deemed untrustworthy by Klopp.

The signing of McCarthy then would represent a welcome boost to the squad, and crucially, would relieve some of the game time Alisson has to put himself through. McCarthy is also good enough to ensure the Brazilian number one cannot rest on his laurels either, and Liverpool fans could be safe in the knowledge that they have a steady pair of hands ready to jump in should Alisson be missing.

Deserves his chance: Aston Villa fans want Jed Steer to be number one next season

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Aston Villa want to sign a new number one goalkeeper this summer and could send Lovre Kalinic out on loan.

Villa signed Kalinic from Gent in January with the view to the Croatia international being the club’s number one goalkeeper.

It was a big statement at the time but the 29-year-old’s move to Villa Park has simply not worked out and Jed Steer quickly took over as the first-choice.

Steer was terrific in the final months of the campaign, putting in a string of impressive performances as Dean Smith’s side earned promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs.

But Nixon has claimed that Villa want a new stopper this summer.

“The EPL is overrated anyway!” – Check out a Derby fan’s Play-off final vlog in the video below…

And the newly-promoted club’s fans have insisted that Steer should be given a chance to prove his worth in the top flight next term, rather than signing a goalkeeper to overtake him in the pecking order.
