'The financial thing is a hurdle' – ex-players stay away as CSA battles fund crunch

Faf du Plessis agrees that while the set-up needs inputs from past players, the board cannot always afford them

Cricket South Africa (CSA) needs deeper pockets if it wants former international players to be involved in their structure and programmes, according to captain Faf du Plessis. In the aftermath of what he called the “toughest part of my captaincy journey”, which has included a poor World Cup, a drubbing in India, and several high-profile retirements, du Plessis explained that while an inexperienced South African set-up need inputs from past greats, they cannot always afford them.”It’s obvious that we need to make more use of our ex-players and especially our experienced players, but it also comes with challenges,” he said. “I know for a fact that we have tried to get them involved, but I suppose it always comes down to a financial point of view. The financial thing is a hurdle at the moment but if that wasn’t a hurdle, most definitely.”ALSO READ: Du Plessis calls on CSA for certainty over director of cricket, team directorWhile he did not specifically name the players who had been approached, ESPNcricinfo understands that both Jacques Kallis and Shaun Pollock were spoken with, but had declined offers. There are also several other players scattered around the scene, who could have been of use. Former captain Graeme Smith was part of the commentary team in India, while recent retiree Hashim Amla was an analyst for the South African broadcaster . He was joined by Makhaya Ntini and former national coach Eric Simons. Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and Morne Morkel, who have all retired in the last 18 months, have not been involved at all.All these names form part of the group of experienced players that du Plessis has called on to help lift South African cricket out of its current situation. “We need experience in the team right now and that comes from ex-players. It’s great that there are three franchise coaches now that have played international cricket: Robin Peterson, Ashwell Prince, Mark Boucher. That’s a great thing,” du Plessis said, though he missed naming Imraan Khan, who coaches the Dolphins and played one Test in 2009. “We need to make sure that the experience and knowledge in our country – we use it to the best of our ability.”Interim CSA director of cricket Corrie van Zyl echoed du Plessis’s thoughts, saying the “door is open” to former players, not just with the national team but at the levels below. “We would like to go to players like Hashim and say if it can’t happen at Proteas level, can you help with high performance [teams]?” Van Zyl said.Enoch Nkwe, the interim team director, agree, but like du Plessis, indicated that former players were not always available.”How do we get those ex-players, those great minds involved in the game? Not only at national level. We’ve seen it with England where Ian Bell is working with the under-19s. I know the likes of JP Duminy are interested in working with lower levels, where they feel they can make an impact and get young players prepared,” he said. “It is a direction that CSA wants to take but it’s a matter of are those individuals available, because they also have other commitments.”Ashwell Prince was in India overseeing a South African spin camp•Getty Images

Those “other commitments”, if you read between du Plessis’ lines, are the opportunities to make money elsewhere. Smith, Pollock and Amla are believed to be paid more by broadcasters than CSA can afford. Similarly, du Plessis indicated money could be the reason players who retire don’t stay in the domestic set-up, where they can mentor the next generation.”Unfortunately, in South Africa right now, players that retire from international cricket are not going to stay and play domestic cricket. They will either play overseas or retire completely,” du Plessis said. “To have players like Hashim Amla and those guys, you can’t expect them to go back and play four-day cricket because they won’t. They won’t do that, they’ve been in the international game for so long, they are either going to move on to different pastures – not necessarily greener pastures – or they will completely stop.”I don’t think it’s a real expectation to have, to say those guys must go and play domestic cricket because I don’t think it’s a reality that will most likely ever be met.”None of Amla, Steyn, Duminy or Morkel play four-day cricket in South Africa, neither does Imran Tahir, who remains available for T20I selection. That leaves South Africa’s domestic system without a wealth of experience, a problem that remains even when the current crop of internationals are available. They rarely play franchise cricket because of the demands of their schedules and, in the immediate term, the need for time out after a tough tour.”I do believe in the national players going back and playing domestic cricket as well and the conversations do take place, but it’s also about the international player. The guys who play ten months of the year on the road, it’s also important for them to have a break and have some mental freshness,” du Plessis said.”Some guys will play in the four-day games now but some are not, because what’s required now is a bit of time away from the game. India was a really tough tour, mentally, and to just say to them ‘now you have to go and play’ won’t be the right way to go about it. If a guy doesn’t want to go and play, what’s the point of him playing? There will be no benefit.”Still, Rory Kleinveldt has called for du Plessis himself to lead from the front and play in the round of first-class fixtures which begin on Monday. That is unlikely, not least because Cape Town resident du Plessis continues to be associated with the Pretoria-based Titans’ team, which is laden with national players already.Dean Elgar, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen are the other batsmen with the Titans and it could be argued that at least two of them – de Bruyn and Klaasen – need more game time than du Plessis. And all four cannot be included anyway because of transformation requirements. The complicated requirements of South Africa’s selection also make it difficult for former players to find a spot, which was CSA’s argument behind expanding the top tier to 12 teams, which South Africa Cricketers’ Association is opposing in court. Du Plessis admitted he “does not know a lot about domestic structures, because I don’t spend a lot of time in domestic structures” but said if more teams meant more playing positions, he would be in favour of it.”The most obvious is that you are getting more players playing the game and that’s ideally a good scenario. The bigger the pool that we as the Proteas can pick from, the better.”Actually, the opposite will happen. Currently, South Africa’s domestic scene has space for 66 cricketers to play each week in the six franchises and 143 players in the 13-team provincial structure, which also has first-class status, though it is a second-tier competition. That’s a total of 209 players in action every weekend and does not take into account the few dozen on the sidelines.Collapsing the franchise and provincial structure into one tier, which is CSA’s intention, will reduce the total player number to 132, which means 77 fewer active cricketers. While du Plessis genuinely may not know the intricacies of this system, or may have disregarded the provincial system in his initial calculation because it is lower tier, the impact of the domestic restructure is clear: South Africa will have a thinner pipeline, something it can ill-afford from a playing point of view but needs to do financially.Lest we forget, CSA are still estimating debt over the next four-year cycle as being at R654 million (approx. US$ 44.8 million) and are looking to cut costs wherever they can. And that speaks to du Plessis’ first point that CSA’s pockets are not deep enough for their former players. But it also speaks to a less obvious issue, that perhaps the former players themselves are wary of becoming involved at CSA. This is a subject that is spoken about in hushed tones and in off-the-record conversations, but it is starting to show its head. Jacques Rudolph has blamed the administration for the current decline. While CSA tries to put out legal fires on several fronts, they are losing credibility among the very people who are their strongest currency: the players. And that is something they cannot afford at all.

Farke masterclass: "Outstanding" Leeds star wants to sign long term deal

Leeds United may have just been handed a major boost on the personnel front with one man ready to commit his future to Elland Road, as per the latest reports, and lilywhites boss Daniel Farke has to take plenty of the credit.

Leeds keep up winning ways

Another Championship win on Friday night, this time a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, kept Leeds in the hunt for automatic promotion in their first season out of the Premier League.

Goals from Patrick Bamford and Wilfried Gnonto ensured that Leeds leapfrogged Ipswich Town into second place, with the Tractor Boys then falling to a dramatic 2-1 deafeat at Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon.

Sat on 79 points with nine games still to play, it is looking likely that a record points tally will be required to ensure automatic promotion from the English second tier this season, with 93 points the previous record to make it into the Premier League in second place.

Leeds' fortunes in the coming months will have a major effect on their transfer business, but there is one man that they may well be picking up regardless of which division they begin 2024/25 in.

Rodon makes decision on Leeds future

TeamTalk report that Joe Rodon has been 'advised' by Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou that he has no future in north London. Valued by the Lilywhites at around £15m, they add that Leeds are seemingly ready to make a move for the Welshman irrespective of whether or not they manage to secure a return to the English top flight come the end of the campaign.

Rodon is out of contract in 2025, which will only further Leeds' hopes of landing their star defender on a permanent basis at a cut-price fee. Most importantly, the player himself is said to be very happy in Yorkshire and keen to sign a long-term deal, regardless of what division they are in, due largely to how much he is loving life under Farke.

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

Arriving at Elland Road for the 2023/24 campaign, Rodon has been a star for Leeds United. Appearing 34 times already this season, he has been a major part of a Leeds side that boasts the meanest defence in the division, conceding just 28 goals all season. He played another 90 minutes in their impressive 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night and is a firm favourite in west Yorkshire.

Earlier in the campaign, ex-Leeds man Jon Newsome hailed Rodon as 'outstanding' following a 3-0 win over Millwall.

"Outstanding. Absolutely outstanding. Joe Rodon was man of the match for me. He got his head on everything. He was a different class, he really, really was", he eulogised of the Welshman.

Despite his impressive campaign, however, Rodon's future appears to lie away from parent club Tottenham. In the months since Postecoglou has arrived at the club, he has already signed two new central defenders (Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin) and Rodon is now further down the pecking order than ever in north London, opening the door for a long-term switch to Leeds.

Sky Sports share exciting West Brom takeover update from The Hawthorns

On the pitch, West Bromwich Albion have gone against all odds to maintain their place in the race to secure a Championship play-off spot come the end of the season. And now Carlos Corberan and those watching on at The Hawthorns have finally received some positive news away from the pitch.

West Brom takeover news

The Baggies have been forced to endure the ownership of Lai Guochuan since July of 2016, as he racked up over £4m in debt from West Brom's parent company controlled by Alex Hearn. This has limited their spending entirely, with not a single penny spent on transfer fees in the summer or January transfer windows, which also saw key man Dara O'Shea depart.

BBC man reacts to "massive blow" for West Brom after latest injury news

More frustration for the Baggies star.

ByTom Cunningham Feb 15, 2024

The Midlands club previously got a positive update when it comes to their proposed takeover when reports indicated that Lai had reached an agreement to pay back his loan to Hearn in instalments. Now, following that news, Florida-based businessman Shilen Patel has officially agreed a deal to buy West Brom – purchasing an 87.7% stake in a deal reportedly worth £20m. Sky Sports reported the news:

After completing the takeover, Patel told West Brom's official website:

“I am thrilled and grateful to have reached an agreement to become the custodian of West Bromwich Albion Football Club. The club’s exceptional history, support, and potential set it apart even here in the cradle of football.

“My goal is to help the club achieve a future worthy of its history as a pioneering top-flight club that marshals the pride and passion that have defined the Albion for generations. I am excited to get started at The Hawthorns and look forward to the deal completing next week.”

Patel could take West Brom back to the Premier League

Without financial backing, Corberan has taken West Brom all the way to fifth and is on course for a play-off place come May, which could yet result in promotion. Now, imagine what the former Huddersfield Town boss could do with the backing of incomings at his disposal.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Previous reports suggested that Patel could turn towards Torino manager Ivan Juric with an offer already reportedly submitted to the Croatian, but given how well Corberan has done, that decision would be fairly premature and one that the new owner could instantly regret. Corberean has more than earned Patel's backing and should be handed the responsibility to take the Baggies up.

Next up, West Brom square off against high-flying Southampton in front of The Hawthorns faithful ready to celebrate. If Corberan's side can defeat the Saints just a day after Patel's takeover was announced, it would cap off West Brom's best week in a long time. With Lai's tenure finally over, things are certainly looking up for all involved with the Midlands club on and off the pitch.

Liverpool looking at signing £100k-p/w PL star to be their own Gvardiol

The January transfer window has been open for over two weeks and Liverpool are yet to make an addition to their squad. However, they have now been linked with an interest in a Premier League defender…

Liverpool's desire to sign an England international

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Reds are keen on a swoop to sign versatile Chelsea centre-back and full-back Levi Colwill to bolster their defensive options.

The report claims that Liverpool are ready to 'test' the Blues' resolve if the London-based outfit decide that they are open to cashing in on him.

It states that Mauricio Pochettino's side are looking at ways to raise funds and are aware that selling homegrown talent – like Colwill and Conor Gallagher – will help them with Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Jurgen Klopp could now land his own version of Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol by tempting Chelsea into a deal for the £100k-per-week ace his month, or in the summer.

Gvardiol's passing brilliance for City

The Croatia international joined the Cityzens from RB Leipzig last summer and has enjoyed a solid start to life in England as a versatile defender who can be deployed at centre-back or left-back.

As a dynamic left-footed ace, Gvardiol is comfortable in either position and can drop in to form a back three with the opposite full-back bombing on when deployed at full-back as part of a fluid system.

goncalo-inacio-josko-gvardiol-newcastle-premier-league

He is also a terrific passer, in both roles, and can help his team to progress up the pitch. The 21-year-old titan ranks within the top 25% or higher of Premier League full-backs for progressive passes (4.73) and progressive carries (2.51) per 90 this season, whilst also being in the top 13% for pass success rate (86.7%).

These statistics show that Gvardiol is a progressive player in possession who can find his teammates in dangerous positions to advance the play, instead of being regressive and passing sideways and backwards to stagnate the build-up.

Colwill's similarities to Gvardiol

The Chelsea youngster is also a young left-footed defender who has been deployed as both a centre-back and a left-back throughout his career so far.

FBref lists Gvardiol as one of the most similar players to Colwill in the Premier League this season but his passing in a progressive Brighton side on loan last term was more comparable to the City star's performances in the 2023/24 campaign.

Colwill averaged 5.16 progressive passes and 1.18 progressive carries per 90 and completed 88% of his attempted passes for the Seagulls in the top-flight last season.

These statistics show that the 20-year-old titan, who was once described as a "Rolls-Royce" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has the quality to be a terrific progressive passer who is efficient and forward-thinking, just as Gvardiol has been this season for City.

Therefore, Klopp could land his own version of the Croatian dynamo by signing another versatile young left-footed defender who is strong off the ball and progressive in possession.

Emery closing in on £15m Diaby partner for Aston Villa

Aston Villa could be close to sealing their second signing of the January transfer window as they have submitted another bid for a talented Championship starlet…

Aston Villa’s search for new signings

Unai Emery secured his first deal of the winter window by sealing a move for defender Kosta Nedeljkovic from Red Star Belgrade, yet he will remain with the club until joining up with Villa in the summer.

This means the Spaniard has not actually signed anyone as yet who will bolster his first-team squad between now and the end of the season.

This could change between now and Thursday, however, as David Ornstein has given an update on their chase for Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers.

The journalist said: “Aston Villa submit improved third offer to Middlesbrough for Morgan Rogers.

“Latest proposal worth in region of £15m including add-ons. No agreement with #Boro so far but negotiations ongoing + #AVFC hopeful of closing deal early next week.”

Morgan Rogers in action against Aston Villa.

Could the Midlands outfit finally get the player they have been chasing for the previous few weeks? It looks like a deal could go through before deadline day on Thursday.

Emery could certainly form a frightening duo with him and Moussa Diaby on either flank as they would help ease the pressure on Ollie Watkins for goals.

Latest Aston Villa transfer news: Unai eyes £40m deal; Saudi club want star

It’s a huge summer for Aston Villa and Unai Emery as they prepare for the Champions League.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 11, 2024 Why Morgan Rogers could benefit Diaby

Diaby arrived for a club record fee of £51.9m last summer, yet he has not quite lived up to those high expectations yet.

The Frenchman has registered 11 goal contributions in 30 matches for the club, but once he really settles down, there is no doubt he could start replicating the form he displayed for Bayer Leverkusen over the previous few years.

His favoured position is on the right wing and with Rogers operating on the left flank for Boro on a regular basis, the duo could be devastating together.

The 21-year-old has scored seven goals and grabbed nine assists in 33 matches this term, but it is not just his effectiveness in front of goal which would make him a good signing for Emery.

The youngster currently ranks second among the squad for big chances created (11), along with ranking fourth for key passes per game (1.4) and for successful dribbles per game (one), clearly indicating his desire to burst into the final third and create opportunities for his teammates. It's those attributes that could well be game-changing for both Diaby and Watkins in Villa's attack.

Rogers was previously dubbed “outstanding” by his former boss Michael Appleton during his loan spell at Lincoln City in 2021, and it is safe to say he has developed into a wonderful talent who could well be ready for the rigours of Premier League football.

While Rogers may not be a big name as such, the fact that he will only cost Villa £15m could prove to be a wise move by Emery as he keeps some funds for bigger signings in the summer.

The current Boro star could thrive in the top flight should he be given regular opportunities and a duo of him and Diaby on either wing may lead to the club ending their 28-year-trophy drought this term.

Alex Lees, Graham Clark help Durham to bounce back against Warwickshire

Durham pulled off a comfortable DLS chase after restricting Warwickshire in the field

Durham returned to winning ways in the Royal London Cup with a comfortable seven-wicket Duckworth-Lewis-Stern victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston.A solid all-round display saw Durham bounce back from their North Group defeat at Worcester two days earlier. They restricted Warwickshire to 244 for 8 with tidy bowling, led by Ben Raine and Liam Trevaskis, supported by excellent fielding.Tim Ambrose, Chris Woakes and Sam Hain made half-centuries but the scoring-rate was slowed for too long by the need to shore up the innings after the loss of early wickets. The home side’s total looked under-par and even more so when, after an hour’s rain delay, the DLS equation left Durham requiring 211 in 36 overs.Alex Lees, Graham Clark and Gareth Harte eased Durham to victory with 14 balls to spare to ensure they remain right in the heart of the qualification race.Warwickshire, meanwhile, without a win after four games, desperately need victory in the derby against Worcestershire at New Road on Sunday. Added to their problems is yet another injury concern as Ambrose did not keep wicket after suffering some hip discomfort between innings.Put in, the home side received a perky start from Ed Pollock who collected 22 in fours and sixes but was then smartly caught by Scott Steel, running round the midwicket boundary, off Brydon Carse. Steel then showed safe hands again, at deep extra cover, to remove Dom Sibley off Trevaskis.Ambrose and Hain added 69 in 15 overs before the latter was bowled behind his legs by Gareth Harte. That was the first of three wickets in 23 balls as Will Rhodes chipped Carse to midwicket and Liam Banks lifted Raine to long off to leave the Bears 142 for 5.Woakes injected some momentum with a 43-ball half-century but Durham fielded tigerishly, turning a number of apparent boundary hits into ones or twos. They also caught like cats, with Harte pouching Ambrose at midwicket, Steel pouncing like a panther for a third time when Alex Thomson skied Carse, and Clark making no mistake when Woakes lifted Matty Potts to long-on.The DLS calculation left Warwickshire badly needing early wickets but they took only one, when Steel was brilliantly caught at cover by a diving Sibley off Olly Hannon-Dalby.Clark and Lees were little troubled in a stand of 93 in 14 overs, the former reaching his second List A half-century, from 47 balls, in the grand manner with a six hoisted into the Hollies Stand off George Panayi. He then pulled a Thomson long-hop to midwicket and Woakes swiftly had Cameron Bancroft caught by sub keeper Alex Mellor but Lees skilfully shepherded his side to victory in an unbroken partnership of 79 with Harte.

Arsenal contact Everton over "terrific" star, Toffees want huge fee

It's difficult to judge Everton based on the Premier League table alone. As things stand, the Toffees sit just one point clear of the relegation zone, but without the deduction, they would be as high as 12th and 11 points clear of the drop. That said, those at Goodison Park must face their current reality and continue a solid season of results to keep their top-flight status intact once again.

It could yet be a damaging month for the Merseyside club, however, with a Premier League rival reportedly making contact to sign one of Sean Dyche's best players at Goodison Park. His exit would certainly deal the Toffees a major blow.

Everton transfer news

After already breaching Financial Fair Play rules, Everton's main priority may well be to stay within the regulations these days, rather than run the risk of another decuction, which could leave them all but relegated. This means that it could be a fairly quiet month in the blue half of Merseyside when it comes to incomings. Instead, Everton may be forced to shift their focus to keeping hold of certain players with one club reportedly circling to land one of Dyche's stars.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

According to TeamTalk, Arsenal have made an approach to sign Amandou Onana from Everton this month. The Toffees will hope to fend off any interest by reportedly setting a huge price tag, with previous estimations sitting between £70m and £90m in what would likely be one of the most expensive deals in the transfer window this month.

Whilst Everton are reluctant to sell Onana, they reportedly see the midfielder as one of their most sellable assets, which could potentially see them cash in for the right price. As the window goes on, the Belgian will certainly be one to keep an eye on amid Arsenal's interest.

"Terrific" Onana is vital to Everton's survival chances

At just 22-years-old, Onana is only likely to get even better over time in the Premier League and that makes him vital to Dyche's side in both the present and future. As things stand, the Belgium international is vital to their survival chances, making a mid-season departure a potential disaster for those at Goodison Park. Onana's stats prove how important he is to Dyche, given that he's started 15 of Everton's 20 Premier League games in the current campaign.

It's therefore no surprise that Onana has earned plenty of praise from Dyche, who told Everton TV: “I thought Amadou [Onana] was terrific today, not just his goal but the ugly side of the game with his hard work and positional sense."

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

What stands out most when looking at Onana's performances is his aerial ability. The midfielder is in the top 95 percentile for aerials won when compared to midfielders in Europe's top five leagues. His 2.47 aerial duels won per 90 minutes makes him a vital player in Dyche's squad and someone that Everton should avoid selling at all costs during the January transfer window.

India grapple with sixth bowling option with series on the line

Big PictureShaun Marsh can’t buy a run in Tests these days, but has four centuries in his last eight ODI innings. MS Dhoni couldn’t score a single ODI half-century in 2018, but has begun 2019 with back-to-back ones, also finishing the second ODI with a six in the final over. Twitterverse thinks this is a roll back to 2009, their version of the #10yearschallenge in action: scoring runs then, scoring runs now.The reality is Marsh needs these runs to stave off competition after losing his Test spot, while Dhoni continues to receive firm backing from his captain, even as the clamour for Rishabh Pant’s inclusion in the shorter formats reaches fever pitch. The concerns for both teams, though, are elsewhere.Australia’s is their inability to push past the 300-run barrier twice in a row. In Adelaide, a clutch of middle-order wickets on the face of superb death bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar denied them a final kick. In Sydney, they had a middle-overs lift courtesy Peter Handscomb, but couldn’t capitalise on it. Can Glenn Maxwell be that man?Justin Langer believes he is best suited at No. 7 presently. This puts the onus equally on Marcus Stoinis to do the heavy lifting. This could be tricky at times, if the top order takes its time to consolidate. In the first two games, Australia made 138 for 3 and 141 for 4 at the 30-over mark. This leaves the lower order little breathing space if they are to push towards 330, quite the norm in ODIs these days – most-certainly will be at the World Cup in England.Another headache that is growing with every passing game is Aaron Finch’s form and his shortcomings against the incoming delivery. A high of 27 and a low of 16 degrees should make it that much more comfortable to run the extra twos and threes.Stats and trivia Aaron Finch has had a woeful home season across formats. In 15 innings, he’s managed just one half-century, and made 228 runs at an average of 15.20. Eight of these have been single-digit scores, with two ducks. India have lost each of their last three ODIs at the MCG against Australia. Overall, India have lost nine of their 14 ODIs at this venue against the hosts. Their last win was in the CB series in 2008, when they won by five wickets, chasing 160. Kuldeep Yadav’s strike rate drops to a wicket every 65 balls in final games of bilateral ODI series, a far cry from his career strike rate of roughly 26 balls per wicket. This is an indication that batsmen tend to work him out as a series nears completion.Quotes”It’s been a while since we’ve won a series either home or away. Coming up against a really powerful line-up, there’s been some real positives, particularly with the bat in these two games. There’s been a lot of improvement over the last eight to 10 months to be really proud of in these two games.”
Aaron Finch, Australia’s captain“It’s not a worry. They’re young blokes. They just came in and, of course, we back them. That’s how they are going to learn. When they play against a good side, if they go for runs, that’s when they lift up themselves because they think more about the game and strategies and that’s how they will be become more mature players.”
