Confira:

Urn secure but England look to deny Australia series glory

The hosts have confirmed an unchanged XI while Australia, looking to win a series in England for the first time since 2001, are likely to recall Todd Murphy

Andrew McGlashan26-Jul-2023Big PictureAnd so, to the final act. We were on the brink of the ultimate decider which would have been the biggest Test in this country since the corresponding fixture in 2005, and perhaps ever. Sadly, the Manchester weather put paid to that and Australia were able to cling onto the urn as puddles formed on the Old Trafford outfield. It remains to be seen how well England can rouse themselves in a bid to level the series having played almost the perfect match last time out when the weather allowed. From 2-0 down, a drawn series would be a laudable outcome but, regardless of Ben Stokes saying he will never have regrets, there will surely be nagging thoughts of what could have been, particularly at Edgbaston.Related

Cummins: 'To go home winning the urn will be phenomenal – it's a final thing to tick off'

Anderson: 'There are no thoughts about retirement'

England named unchanged XI for Oval Ashes finale

From Australia’s point of view, however, this remains a crucial five days having not won a series in England since 2001. They had it within their grasp at Headingley and, unless the weather intervenes significantly again, only 3-1 will allow them to categorically say they have been the better team. They are back at the scene of where the tour began with the World Test Championship victory over India. A lot has happened since then. But barring the injuries to Nathan Lyon and Ollie Pope, both teams have come through the rigours of the condensed schedule remarkably well to the extent there could be just one change for the final outing – a return for Todd Murphy.Across the two sides, this will likely be the final Ashes outing for a significant number of players. Many of the leading stars of the series are well into their 30s. There have been rumours of retirements on both sides, but it appears there won’t be any definite announcements at a ground that has farewelled many stars.Until the two days of rain in Manchester this had been a series that had lived up to all the hype. It deserves a memorable finish even if the urn is no longer up for grabs.Form guide(last five matches, most recent first)

The 2025-26 tour down under is probably touch-and-go given the state of his body. He insists he doesn’t have any regret over decisions he has made during the last six weeks, although asked to pick out one moment he would like to have over again he singled out the dropped catch off Lyon when 37 were still needed at Edgbaston. Having put himself through a 12-over spell at Lord’s he has not bowled in the last two matches. With England not playing Tests again until January, and him having retired from ODIs, there may be a window to consider any longer-term options to try and repair the damage, although the team have found a way to accommodate him as a batter-captain. He has led a revolution in England’s Test cricket but the Ashes has proved agonisingly out of reach. This series has been a far cry from 2019 for Steven Smith. It was going to be a tall order to scale those 774-run heights, but this time he has passed fifty just once in eight innings – his very fine century at Lord’s. At Old Trafford, he fell twice to the pace of Mark Wood and throughout the series England have found ways to combat him better than any other time. But The Oval brings him back to a venue where he has a phenomenal record: an average of 91 and a century in his last outing against India early last month. Not heaps. Looks like a pretty good wicket.” Eyes will again be on the weather forecast, although not to the same extent as Old Trafford. There are showers of varying degrees expected on Thursday, Saturday and Monday.Stats and trivia England’s series run-rate of 4.68 is the highest for any team in a series where at least four matches have been played Stokes needs one catch to 100 in Tests: he would be just the third player to score 6000 runs, take 100 wickets and told 100 catches after Jacques Kallis and Garry Sobers Entering what is likely to be his final Ashes encounter, Anderson has not won an Ashes Test since 2015. With Stuart Broad again playing all five Tests in the series, it means he has not missed a home Ashes match since he first played in 2009.Quotes”Coming into this series I felt like six [Tests] was going to be really busy. But it’s all been good. Obviously there have been some challenges, some moments when you scratch your head, but I feel in a really good place physically and in terms of the captaincy. Nazmul Hassan suggests there may still be room for Mahmudullah in World Cup squad

The BCB president feels Mahmudullah could be competing with three other middle-order batters for one spot

Mohammad Isam18-May-2023BCB president Nazmul Hassan has weighed in on Bangladesh’s World Cup squad even as he recognised that the final call would be with chief selector Minhajul Abedin. Hassan spoke about all the positions in the team, in particular the much-talked-about No. 7 spot. Bangladesh have recently tended to pick six bowlers and trust Mehidy Hasan Miraz to bat at No 7 position.Hassan has been known over the years for having a major say in most decisions in Bangladesh cricket. So when he speaks about the World Cup squad, it becomes an important reference point even for the national selectors.Bangladesh are likely to finalise their squad for the World Cup, which is set to be played in India in October-November 2023, when they play the Asia Cup, which is scheduled for September. ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, however, has suggested that the team is unlikely to experiment with too many new faces even during the Afghanistan ODIs in July.Hassan feels Bangladesh have firmed up their top six – Tamim, Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan – leaving four players – including the experienced Mahmudullah, who didn’t feature in either of Bangladesh’s recent series against Ireland – competing for one other possible spot in the squad for a middle-order batter.”If we want to play with five bowlers, we will be playing an extra batter,” Hassan said. “[Yasir Ali] Rabbi is currently in the squad. The likes of Afif [Hossain], Mahmudullah and Mosaddek [Hossain] aren’t in the squad, but they can be picked at any point. We will need an allrounder in case we are playing five bowlers. Ultimately I don’t know what Nannu [Abedin] will do, I am just saying from myself.”There’s no guarantee for anyone who will be in the squad that he will play in the eleven. Afif and Mahmudullah can make it to the team for their batting. Yasir hasn’t done much after returning from injury. Afif and Mosaddek are ahead in bowling, and so is Mahmudullah. Afif is the better fielder among them [followed by] Mosaddek and then [Mahmudullah] Riyad.”Hassan also felt there could be room in the squad for a back-up opener. Mohammad Naim and Anamul Haque Bijoy – who topped this season’s Dhaka Premier League run charts – could be in contention for this spot.”They might pick a back-up opener in case of an injury,” Hassan said. “They are likely to pick three pacers so any three among Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Ebadot Hossain and Mustafizur [Rahman] will play. They are unlikely to play anything less than five bowlers in the World Cup. They may even take four pacers in the line-up. They will also need an extra spinner.”Hassan was positive that the Asia Cup would take place as scheduled, but said he had heard no communication yet regarding whether it would be a multiple-venue tournament or if it would be held in one country. Strained relations between India and Pakistan – who are due to host the tournament – have created an impasse regarding where the tournament will be played. As things stand, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed a hybrid model with the UAE hosting all of India’s matches and Pakistan hosting the remaining games, but Sri Lanka and Bangladesh aren’t in favour of this model.”I haven’t heard anything from the ACC [Asian Cricket Council] regarding the Asia Cup. But it will take place,” Hassan said. “It is hard to say where it will be. I know that there are two options. Firstly, it can be a hybrid model, to be held in Pakistan and UAE. The second one is that it could be held in one country, most likely in Sri Lanka. They offered it to Bangladesh but we refused it as there will be rain at the time.”

Everton move for "extremely good" teenager collapses due to visa issues

Everton have seen their attempts to sign a talented European teenager stall due to visa issues, a source close to the player has now revealed.

Everton eye attacking reinforcements

After a turbulent few years at Everton, the club’s new owners, the Friedkin Group, have restored a sense of stability as the club looks ahead to a fresh chapter away from Goodison Park.

Not only have Friedkin reappointed David Moyes as manager, which has resulted in a huge upturn in the Toffees’ fortunes on the pitch, they’ve also significantly reduced the club’s £600 million debt, which should free up funds for new signings in the upcoming season.

With money in the kitty, Everton have been linked with a number of big names ahead of the summer, including former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, who is currently on loan at AC Milan from AS Roma.

Everton are understood to have already made an approach for the Englishman, who has scored eight goals in 34 games for Milan this season, with Moyes keen to bolster his attacking line, especially with the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign, uncertain.

Contact made: Everton now make first move for "sensational" £34m striker

The Toffees have asked for information about a forward who is keen on moving to the Premier League.

ByDominic Lund Mar 6, 2025

Abraham himself is believed to be keen on a return to the Premier League, with West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Fulham also named as potential suitors. Elsewhere, the Toffees are also reported to be keen on both West Ham United star Tomas Soucek and Brentford’s Christian Norgaard, seeking an experienced head in midfield.

Everton to lose out on teenage star

Another player Everton had reportedly been keen to land was Hungarian youngster Ricsi Pisont. Pisont, the 13-year-old nephew of former Hungary international István Pisont, has, according to Sportal, recently spent time at the Toffees’ academy, where he impressed enough for the Toffees to want to sign him.

The teenager also attended Blackburn’s academy, where he again convinced an English suitor of his talent. Instead, however, he will now have to stay with the academy of Budapest Honvéd, his uncle’s former club, because he is unable to get an English visa.

“He has gained great experience and both clubs wanted to sign him, but unfortunately we are not yet at the point where we can get a visa to England,” the youngster’s father, Richárd Pisont, told Sportal, per Sports Witness.

“In any case, we are in a very good place now, serious work is underway at the Honvéd academy, and everything is in place for Ricsi to develop his talent in Kispest,” he said.

If István Pisont’s comments on his nephew are anything to be believed, Everton look to have missed out on a serious talent.

“He has extremely good insights in the attacking zone, he makes good decisions in different game situations, he has high game intelligence and very good technical preparation,” the Honvéd legend, who now manages Hungary’s U-17s team, said. “If his physical parameters are also suitable, and if God helps him, he will have a very good career.”

Spurs leading charge to sign £80m+ star and are ready to launch summer bid

Tottenham Hotspur are now leading the charge to sign an “amazing” £83m midfielder, despite widespread interest in the Premier League, according to a report.

Tottenham targeting a midfielder

Although Tottenham were relatively busy in the January transfer window, they still remain short on numbers, amid the ongoing injury crisis, which indicates they will need to improve the depth of their squad ahead of next season.

One position in which Spurs are looking to strengthen is central midfield, with a defensive midfielder of particular interest, and they are well-positioned to win the race for Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso, having formulated plans to activate his release clause.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is another player on the shortlist, while Angel Gomes is also being considered in a slightly more advanced role, with the England international’s Lille contract set to expire at the end of the season.

According to a report from Caught Offside, the Lilywhites are also leading the charge for Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios, who they were determined to sign in the January transfer window.

Palmeiras'RichardRiosin action

Rios will not come cheap, however, as there is a €100m (£83m) release clause included in his contract, which the Brazilian club are insisting on receiving if they are to sanction a sale.

Tottenham are ready to make a move for the Colombian in the summer transfer window, but they are not willing to fork out the huge asking price, so Palmeiras will need to lower their demands if a deal is to occur.

Tottenham leading race for "extraordinary" midfielder, planning £21m offer

Spurs have a major advantage over their rivals in the race for a highly rated 23-year-old.

By
Dominic Lund

Feb 9, 2025

There may be competition for the 24-year-old’s signature, too, as the likes of West Ham United and Nottingham Forest are also ready to make moves of their own at the end of the season.

Rios impressing for club and country

While his performances are unlikely to justify a £83m outlay, the midfielder has put in some impressive displays for Palmeiras, and he is ranked among their best-performing players in the league this season.

Over the past year, the maestro has proven himself in both an attacking and defensive sense, ranking high on a number of key metrics.

Such performances at club level have earned the Palmeiras star a call-up to his national side, featuring in the Copa America final against Argentina last year, and he was credited for putting in an “amazing” performance.

That said, Palmeiras’ asking price is far too high, which could prove to be prohibitive, especially considering the Vegachi-born ace is contracted until the end of 2028.

There are signs Rios could be a quality signing for Tottenham, but they should only pursue a deal if the Brazilian club are willing to lower their demands by a considerable amount.

Namibia gear up to take on familiar UAE faces in massive game

Following Karthik Meiyappan’s hat-trick, Aryan Lakra says he is “just so happy” for his “friend who he’s seen grow through the ranks”

Mohammad Isam19-Oct-2022Namibia and UAE have played each other five times in international cricket, all since 2020 and most recently in August when they played a two-match ODI series. But none of those games will have been in the cricketing world’s spotlight as much as the one they will play on Thursday in Geelong: a win will put Namibia in the Super 12s of the Men’s T20 World Cup. Facing a relatively familiar opponent in the high-profile clash will help, both camps said.”I think it’s always something that we try and use – a bit of analysis how other teams play, so definitely something that we’ll be looking into and just an added advantage against the other side that you’re playing against, having seen more or less all of their battles before,” Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus said. “All the batters say that they’ve got a fresh side, so we’ve got some work to do to be properly prepared for that game.UAE’s Aryan Lakra said that his team, which has lost both games so far, needs to execute their plans better to do well against Namibia.”Definitely Namibia has been playing some good cricket, upsetting Sri Lanka, but at the end of the day it’s the game of cricket. The team which plays better cricket is going to win. We have played against Namibia so we know their batters, bowlers. It’s all about coming up with a good plan and trying to execute it to its best.”Namibia stunned Sri Lanka in their first game, lighting up the tournament’s opening day, before losing to Netherlands. Erasmus said they were mentally ready for the Netherlands game despite the big result first up, but things just did not go right for them.”I think our preparation was really good for the Netherlands game, and I think we had all the right plans, and unfortunately I just didn’t think it was our day yesterday. I think we got outplayed. I think they really bowled well in certain overs and phases of the game. We [saw] how tough a wicket it was to score on, and we stuck to sort of what we know, which is a good fight for 40 overs long, and we made it a very close game.”For 20-year-old Lakra, there’s the added thrill of playing against cricket’s big boys. “Definitely I think it was a great honour presenting the country in a World Cup, and I know the results [so far] didn’t go our way, but definitely a lot of things to learn, and a lot of things to take back from this tournament, and hopefully we come back strong the next time.”There has however only been a moment of massive joy for UAE, when Karthik Meiyappan became the first from his country to take a T20I hat-trick. Meiyappan and Lakra have been friends for a long time, and they celebrated the achievement with other close friends in the team, Alishan Sharafu and Vriitya Aravind, late into the night.”Definitely that was surreal for us because the four of us, we have been playing cricket together for so long, so if anyone does well, we all feel proud,” Lakra said. “And definitely a hat-trick in a World Cup against a Test-playing nation is a huge deal, and we couldn’t be happier for him. We have been talking about it all night and we still cannot believe it.”We are just so happy that a friend of ours who we have seen grow through the ranks, who we have seen as a 14-year-old, growing to be a 20-year-old, getting a hat-trick in a World Cup. That’s definitely a huge deal, and we are really, really happy for him.”

Jadeja at No. 4 forced Pakistan to change plans, and it 'ultimately cost them'

Hardik Pandya justifiably cornered most of the glory after India’s win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup last night in Dubai. But two other aspects of India’s game stood out too. Firstly, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s four-wicket haul, including the early dismissal of Babar Azam. And secondly, a sparkling backroom idea to send Ravindra Jadeja up to bat at No. 4.Though Bhuvneshwar’s heroics came first, let’s begin with Jadeja. Rishabh Pant, the only left-handed top-order batter in the India squad, had been left out to accommodate Dinesh Karthik in the finisher’s role, which meant a top five, or even six, of right-handers. Not ideal. So Jadeja was sent out at the fall of Rohit Sharma’s wicket at the end of the eighth over. He batted through till the final over and scored 35 in 29 balls, adding 36 with Suryakumar Yadav [fourth wicket] and 52 with Hardik [fifth wicket]. A plan that clearly worked on the day.Related

  • Plan for Pakistan: Open with Fakhar; Babar or Rizwan at No. 3

  • Kohli shreds Dubai's nerves with perfectly imperfect knock

“The key for me was having a left-hander there in the middle because that meant they [Pakistan] couldn’t bring [Mohammad] Nawaz back,” Mickey Arthur said of India’s chase on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out programme after the game. “So they had to hold Nawaz to the back-end. And that ultimately probably cost them.”Chatting with Hardik in a bcci.tv feature after the game, Jadeja noted, “When I was promoted in the batting order, I was just thinking of taking my chances against the spinners, attack them at every opportunity I get. And our partnership was very crucial. We just talked in the middle about backing our strengths and play our shots – this was very crucial.”The Nawaz factor was a crucial one. Pakistan’s bowling combination on the night featured three right-arm quicks, a legspinner, and the one left-armer in spinner Nawaz. And Nawaz had done well. In his first over, the eighth of the innings, he had sent back Rohit. And in his next, the tenth, accounted for Virat Kohli. He bowled the 12th too, but, because of Jadeja’s presence, was brought back on only for the final over.”Nobody I think saw that [Jadeja at No. 4] coming. It was a good call. It was a good move. Something that no one really foresaw. I actually quite like that decision,” Robin Uthappa said on the same show. “Going for a bit of Pakistan’s perspective, in hindsight, they could have bowled that one over of the left-arm spinner [Nawaz] in the first six, because they had two right-handers [batting] and it was the right time.”It looked like Babar [Azam] took the safer option to bring in the spinners immediately after the powerplay. He could have brought one of them on during the powerplay. [It] would have been a great match-up for Rohit and Kohli. In the first ten balls to the spinners, they nudge the ball around and they don’t really have a great strike rate at that point in time, and that proved right again today [India were 38 for 1 after the powerplay]. That should have encouraged Pakistan.”Arthur agreed, stressing that after putting up a modest total on the board, 147, Pakistan could have done better with their spin options.”They should have taken pace off towards the back-end of the powerplay,” he said. “Principally because they knew they had only 12 overs of pace with the side they had picked, they could have gone through certainly one over of Nawaz, or even one over of Shadab [Khan, the legspinner], because I know, having studied and set up against Rohit, he doesn’t play legspin particularly well in the powerplay. Or his strike rate to legspin is a lot less.”So you could have bowled Shadab, you could have bowled Nawaz. Nawaz generally bowls in the powerplay for his franchise in the PSL anyway. That would have been a very good match-up to Virat and Rohit. Which would have delayed the overs of the genuine quicks to a little bit later in the game.”4:15

Arthur: ‘Hardik Pandya in the side means India almost have 12 players’

But well before Jadeja did his bit, there was Bhuvneshwar [and Hardik too, he was everywhere].Third over, after India had won the toss and asked Pakistan to bat, Bhuvneshwar, not known to be terribly quick, sent in a bouncer that might have caught Babar by surprise. The pull only caught the top edge and flew to Arshdeep Singh at short fine-leg. The big one gone. Bhuvneshwar returned to pick up three more wickets – Shadab, Asif Ali and Naseem Shah – in the last quarter of the innings to end with 4 for 26.”[Bhuvneshwar’s contribution] was right up there with Hardik Pandya’s contribution as well,” Uthappa noted. “His story of resurgence has been a long and arduous one. He has gone from two years from an injury, not being able to figure out what the injury was […] to work day in and day out at the NCA – and I am telling you, those are not easy days, you have a surgery, you do rehab; the rehab part is the most difficult, the surgery is the easiest – and to come back and do that boring stuff day in and day out, months on end, is extremely hard.”And he has taken his time, he’s played a lot of cricket, and he’s gotten better and better. His confidence has grown. You can see him swinging the ball early and late.”Coming as this performance did on the back of good outings in Ireland, England and the West Indies, Bhuvneshwar could be a shoo-in for the men’s T20 World Cup, in Australia in October-November. Even when Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, India will hope, are back in the mix.

CBS Sports Golazo: 6 hilarious moments from Scott, Henry, Carra & Richards

For a long time, the world of football punditry often took a fairly serious tone.

Sky Sports would have Gary Neville telling us that “this is Manchester United” as they endured another moment to forget, we’d get Roy Keane telling us that it’s a goalkeeper’s job to produce outrageous saves, whilst Jamie Carragher would often stop things “there” on an instant replay.

And in many ways, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that setup, but CBS Sports has found success by taking a different route on their Champions League broadcast.

Combining an unlikely trio of Thierry Henry, Carragher and Micah Richards, the American sports channel has been responsible for broadcasting some of the most entertaining moments in the world of football across the last couple of years.

Top 10 football pundits on TV (ranked)

In football, as in life, there are always those who like to open their mouth. But some of them are better at it than others…

ByRobin Mumford Dec 11, 2023

Whether it’s been discussing Stade Brest or even confusing Serie A’s finest clubs with a Scouse accent, that aforementioned trio, alongside host Kate Scott, have stolen the show on football’s biggest stage for CBS’s Golazo show.

6 Kane denies Carragher call

Most pundits have likely been there, telling a small white lie, or as is often the case, exaggerating an age-old story which has developed from one point to another over the years. But not many get caught out as Carragher was by Harry Kane and CBS last March.

Oftentimes, when that white lie is told, those same pundits aren’t faced with the subject of that lie just hours later. However, the former Liverpool defender faced exactly that. When Scott asked Kane whether Carragher really did call him in the build-up to his Champions League clash for Bayern Munich against Lazio, the striker revealed that did not happen.

Leaving Carragher with egg on his face, the pundit was in disbelief as Richards, Henry and Scott burst into laughter.

5 Burn, Carragher & Richards dance goes viral

After earning his place in Newcastle United folklore alongside the rest of his teammates by defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season, the first thing that Dan Burn had to do was not warm down and celebrate, it was to help Richards and Carragher go viral through the medium of dance.

That said, using the word “dance” is almost an insult to the professionals, as Carragher and Richards attempt the so-called Orange Justice alongside the towering defender, only to perform similarly to dads at a wedding. Carragher was right, though – the dance did “smash the internet”, amassing two million views on Twitter alone.

4 Rafael Leao struggles with Carragher's accent

In what may seem like a rarity, the CBS studio was set up for a serious post-match interview with Milan star Rafael Leao when his side found themselves in the Champions League quarter-final against Serie A rivals Napoli in a clash which eventually saw the winner square off against Inter.

Even Carragher seemed on his best behaviour when attempting to ask about just how huge that semi-final could be, only for his accent to quickly descend the interview into chaos.

Left asking the Scouser to repeat the question, Carragher attempted to use Internazionale in his second attempt, which only confused the Milan winger even further, leaving Richards in tears of laughter at his co-star’s expense.

If Carragher was difficult to understand following Milan’s Champions League game, he’d have been near-impossible to decipher after he spent time in Borussia Dortmund’s Yellow Wall indulging in true football culture.

Joining Peter Schmeichel in his interview with Jadon Sancho for CBS Sports, the legendary Liverpool defender – worse for wear than his co-pundit at this stage – even invited the Dortmund winger out for a drink if his side reached the Champions League final.

Sancho swiftly revealed that he doesn’t drink, but it remains unknown whether the duo have met up again in another form to celebrate Dortmund’s excellent run to Wembley last season. We’re sure that Carragher made plenty of friends inside the famous Yellow Wall regardless as CBS let him loose at the Westfalenstadion.

2 Jack Grealish asks the ultimate question

Fresh from winning their first Champions League trophy, Manchester City’s confidence was rightly sky-high. In their minds, they were undeniable no matter the occasion, and in Jack Grealish’s mind, teammate Kyle Walker was more unbeatable than ever – so much so that he posed the ultimate question to the legendary Thierry Henry.

Momentarily swapping roles, Grealish became the interviewer as the Frenchman answered his question as to whether he’d have been capable of taking Walker on in his prime.

Of course, in the current climate, the mere suggestion of Walker keeping one of the game’s greatest players quiet is as laughable as it gets, but the Manchester City captain deserves credit for just how unbeatable he was at the peak of his powers before his more recent struggles.

That said, we’d have to agree with Henry that he would have given the England international a horrible day at the office.

1 The panel discuss all things (Stade) Brest

Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher on punditry duty for CBS.

When Stade Brest shocked French football by qualifying for the Champions League last season, it was almost destined that the CBS team would have to discuss their upcoming fixtures and reach a verdict on their chances of causing an upset or two.

But if viewers believed that a deep analysis was coming without some tongue-in-cheek moments, they’re not quite familiar with Henry, Carragher and Richards’ technique.

With Richards sailing close to the wind on a previous occasion, he was banished from a later discussion to keep things serious. Henry, Carragher and Scott couldn’t help but make comments of their own, referencing whether Brest’s backline will be exposed in the Champions League or whether they’re fans of Eric Roy’s Brest setup, in a statement fully open to interpretation. This was the panel at their light-hearted best.

Jos Buttler named England men's new white-ball captain

Morgan’s deputy endorsed as full-time successor following formidable form in recent months

Matt Roller30-Jun-2022Jos Buttler has been appointed captain of England’s men’s white-ball teams after Eoin Morgan’s retirement from international cricket earlier this week.Buttler, 31, regularly deputised as captain during Morgan’s seven-and-a-half-year tenure and has captained England in nine ODIs and five T20Is to date, most recently in the third ODI against the Netherlands in Amstelveen last week. His first assignment as captain will be the T20I series against India which starts on July 7 at the Ageas Bowl, for which England are due to name their squad on Friday lunchtime. That fixture marks the start of a packed schedule of 12 limited-overs internationals in 25 days, with three T20Is and three ODIs against both India and South Africa before the end of July.Working with new white-ball coach Matthew Mott, Buttler’s primary focus will be on the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year but England’s defence of their 50-over title is not far away: the next ODI World Cup is scheduled for October-November 2023 in India, with another T20 World Cup to follow in the Caribbean and the USA in 2024.Buttler was recommended for the role by Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, and his appointment was ratified on Wednesday evening by the ECB’s interim chair, Martin Darlow, and chief executive, Clare Connor.”Jos Buttler was the perfect choice to succeed Eoin Morgan as our white-ball captain, and I had no hesitation in offering him the role,” Key said. “Jos has been part of our white-ball set-up for over a decade and was integral in the transformation of the way the team has played its attacking brand of cricket over the past seven years.”He is well-respected in the dressing room by all of his teammates and will relish leading his country. He is in the form of his life and is showcasing his talent against the best players and teams in the world.”I believe the extra responsibility will take his game to a new level and inspire those around him. I’m looking forward to seeing him take us forward. He thoroughly deserves the opportunity.”Related

Eoin Morgan set to stand down as England white-ball captain

Eoin Morgan takes his leave as England captain with one final act of self-awareness

Buttler said it was a “great honour” to take over the captaincy from Morgan, offering him his “sincere thanks and gratitude” for his leadership. “It has been the most memorable period for everyone involved,” Buttler said. “He has been an inspirational leader, and it has been fantastic to play under him. There are lots of things that I have learnt from him that I’ll take into this role.”There is excellent strength in depth in the white-ball squads, and I’m looking forward to leading the teams out for the series that are coming up against India starting next week and later in July against South Africa. It is the greatest honour to captain your country, and when I have had the chance to step in the past, I have loved doing it. I can’t wait to take this team forward.”Connor said: “Jos is a fantastic role model who inspires through his performances on the pitch. He has been instrumental in setting new standards in men’s white-ball cricket, and is the perfect leader to build on the incredible legacy which Eoin has built for our men’s white-ball teams.”Buttler’s appointment as captain was widely anticipated after Morgan’s retirement, with Moeen Ali – the only other realistic contender – endorsing Buttler while working for the BBC’s during the third Test against New Zealand at Edgbaston. He has been vice-captain of the white-ball sides since February 2015 and despite limited captaincy experience, he has been viewed as Morgan’s heir apparent for a number of years.Buttler shut down questions about the prospect of a Test recall during the Netherlands tour and his promotion means it is increasingly hard to work out a route back into the set-up for him, despite his remarkable white-ball form. Sam Billings has been preferred as Ben Foakes’ deputy against India this week and Ben Stokes insisted on Thursday that he had “the Test team I want going forward” available to him.”When we sat down at the start of the summer and selected the squad, it was because those were the guys we wanted in every position and they were the best players to do that,” Stokes said. “At the moment, it’s about giving this team time to succeed and perform.”[Buttler] was the obvious choice once Morgs decided to retire,” Stokes added. “He’s been vice-captain for a number of years and nothing will change. Jos will continue the ethos and mindset that Morgs brought to us from 2015, so, honestly, I don’t think you’ll see anything change whatsoever. It is Jos’ time to take the team forward.”
