AVFC: Fans react to Smith’s training ground routine

A number of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to Dean Smith’s training ground routines during his time in the Midlands, as reported by Ashley Preece.

Smith was relieved of his duties at Bodymoor Heath following a fifth successive Premier League defeat prior to the international break.

He has since taken over at basement side Norwich City, whereas Villa have officially brought in Steven Gerrard from Rangers.

Gerrard took training as Villa manager on Monday and was hands-on during his first session. Preece added that coach Michael Beale, who left Rangers to move south alongside Gerrard, was also very vocal and revealed that winger Trezeguet was back out on the grass following a serious knee injury in April.

Preece also stated that he was intrigued to see if Gerrard has changed the timing of Villa’s sessions, with Smith admitting earlier this year that training began at 12pm.

Villa fans react

Preece’s post on Monday afternoon received plenty of interaction, with many Villa supporters stunned at the 12pm start under Smith and one labelling it as ‘bonkers’, given their total lack of match sharpness during their poor run of form….

“Wait, what? Villa start their day at NOON? Sheesh, get the whip cracking, Gerrard, no excuses!”

Os demais eu me reservo no direito, passar 1h15 antes do jogo.

Lance é chegar no ponto ideal.

Waters and Tikolo hand Kenya the advantage

Brilliant hundreds from Seren Waters and Steve Tikolo put Kenya in pole position at the end of the third day at the Maple Leaf South-West Ground in Toronto

Big hundreds from Seren Waters and Steve Tikolo put Kenya in pole position at the end of the third day at the Maple Leaf South-West Ground in Toronto. Set a target of 446, Canada lost Rizwan Cheema and Sandeep Jyoti in the final 15 overs of the day, leaving them with a mountain to climb on the final day.Canada would have fancied their chances when Kenya resumed on 12 for no loss, with Henry Osinde striking in the fourth over of the day to have David Obuya caught behind for 12. Alex Obanda exited the next over, caught by Cheema off Umar Bhatti, as the visitors slipped to 32 for 2.But it was a one-sided contest from then on as Waters and Tikolo played themselves in and looked increasingly at ease. Tikolo, who looked to have got a fresh lease of life after giving up the captaincy, followed strongly from his 158 in the first essay, smashing 21 fours and two sixes during his 207-ball stay. He had the perfect partner in Waters who stroked 19 boundaries in his 268-ball innings, as the third-wicket partnership yielded 330 runs. Canada had to toil hard in the field with skipper Ashish Bagai using eight bowlers in an effort to break the alliance. It was Tikolo’s dismissal which finally brought about the declaration with Maurice Ouma choosing to give his bowlers a shot at the opposition late in the day. Kenya met with immediate success, with Thomas Odoyo trapping Cheema leg before in the fifth over. Jyoti succumbed to spinner Hiren Varaiya after a flourishing 42-run second-wicket stand with Abdool Samad to leave Canada at 56 for 2.

We can regroup – Ponting

Ricky Ponting has blamed “fundamental skill errors” for Australia’s second Test defeat but remains convinced his side can be patched up in time to hit back at Edgbaston next week

Ricky Ponting has blamed “fundamental skill errors” for Australia’s second Test defeat but remains convinced his side can be patched up in time to hit back at Edgbaston next week. While Mitchell Johnson’s bowling was the biggest concern of the 115-run loss, there are also serious worries over the opener Phillip Hughes and the decisions of the batsmen.Australia were behind from the opening session, which began with Johnson spraying the ball, and were out of the match when they fell for 215 in their first innings amid a flurry of cross-batted dismissals. Michael Clarke improved their position in the second bat with 136 after the side dropped to 128 for 5 in their impossible victory pursuit of 522.”There are fundamental skill errors that we have made in this game,” Ponting said. “I’m not just talking about the bowling. We didn’t bat very well either in our first innings. Two hundred-odd on that wicket was a long way short of what we needed to get.”The first two days was where the game was decided. I was pretty happy with the way we stuck at things for the remainder of the game. It’s just little skill errors that have cost us big time.” Australia play a three-day match against Northamptonshire on Friday before the third Test in Birmingham starts on July 30.Despite being 1-0 down after two fixtures, Ponting is certain his men can re-group and believes both teams are evenly matched. Australia dominated much of the opening game in Cardiff, which now feels as far away as 2005, but England quickly built on their thrilling draw to take a strong advantage.”It’s grabbing the momentum when you can and running with it for as long as you can that’s going to decide this series,” Ponting said. “If you look at this game, they grabbed the momentum on day one, ran with it, and we found it hard to wrest it back.”A lot of Test matches are won with what happens in the first hour’s play. We were a fair bit off at the start of this game and we have to make sure we’re a whole lot better when we start the third one.”Ponting spoke calmly after the match and managed to laugh at his treatment from the usually polite Lord’s crowd. They jeered him throughout the contest, starting with his dispute of an incorrect caught-behind dismissal on the second day and continuing when he missed a run-out of Kevin Pietersen and a catch off Ravi Bopara in England’s second innings.”They seemed to take great pleasure in me dropping that,” Ponting said. He counted 15 big-screen replays of the drop in two overs.”I got my first clap as I got off the stage from my post-game interview on the ground,” he said. “It took me cracking a joke to get a laugh out of them. I’m not sure what all the animosity was there.” He promised not to lose any sleep over the response, which comes from his spirit of the game pronouncements, treatment of umpires and gritty on-field behaviour. He is also Australia’s most talented and recognisable player.Clarke sat next to his captain and said his century became “irrelevant” with the defeat. He wished the performance had come in the first innings instead, when he flicked James Anderson to midwicket on 1.”Our goal is to win the game,” Clarke said. “I thought we played pretty well last night but it’s irrelevant now because we didn’t get the result we were after. We knew we had a big job to do today, especially in the first session, but unfortunately we didn’t get the result. I think we can still take some confidence out of the way we performed with the bat in the second innings.”

Rangers: Gerrard must axe McGregor v Hearts

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be hoping for another happy weekend as the Gers take on Hearts in the Premiership on Saturday.

The Jam Tarts travel to Ibrox this weekend as they aim to overtake Rangers at the summit after nine matches, as they currently sit one point behind the Glasgow giants.

A win for the Gers, though, would see them move four points clear at the top and in a comfortable position heading into the next few weeks.

In order to give Rangers the best possible chance of winning this weekend, Gerrard must get his starting XI selection spot-on. This means he could have some big decisions to make, one of which is regarding who starts between the sticks…

Allan McGregor started the 2-1 win over Hibernian, but the £13k-per-week dud has endured a difficult season in the league. He has a save percentage of just 50% in the Premiership for Rangers, which is the joint-lowest in the division.

Gabriel Agbonlahor recently claimed that such ropey form is to be expected at the age of 39 and that he will still be able to produce quality displays.

He told Football Insider: “At McGregor’s age, you’re going to get those moments when you’re in and out of the team.

“He’s been a great servant to the game, a great servant to Rangers. So, I’m sure that he’ll play his fair share of games for Rangers and they’ll still get some good performances out of him.”

Whilst McGregor may still be able to perform well at times, as Abgonlahor has said, his form so far this season suggests that he is a liability to the team. Gerrard cannot afford to have an inconsistent goalkeeper between the sticks as it could affect the confidence of the defence and cause issues at the back in key matches.

Jon McLaughlin has kept two clean sheets in four appearances and has a save percentage of 71.4%. This suggests that he has been superior in goal for the Gers in comparison to McGregor this season, which is why Gerrard must axe the veteran shot-stopper to play the former Sunderland man.

Therefore, the 34-year-old should be handed the gloves for this important match as he has shown he is a more in-form ‘keeper. Gerrard must axe McGregor in order to play McLaughlin as the 39-year-old has been a liability and Rangers need to maintain their place at the top of the table this weekend.

Predicted QPR XI to face Sunderland

Queens Park Rangers will be aiming to progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup when they welcome Sunderland to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium tonight.

Mark Warburton’s charges have won their last three fixtures on home territory but will come into this one off the back of a disappointing defeat at the hands of Peterborough United last time out.

The capital club are likely to be without left-back Lee Wallace and midfielder Sam Field for the visit of the Black Cats. Wallace has been out with a hamstring problem since the middle of August and is yet to make his return to first team action, while Field is set to continue his recovery from a knee injury.

Sam McCallum could also be an injury concern for the Hoops after he was substituted against Peterborough at the weekend with a tight hamstring, meaning Warburton will have no natural left-sided defender available for this midweek encounter.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects QPR to line up against their League One opponents, with many changes from the side which started against the Posh…

In goal, first-choice shot-stopper Seny Dieng is set to keep his place between the sticks despite keeping just four clean sheets in his 15 appearances this season.

Ahead of the Senegal international is likely to be a familiar back three, but with one change. Jordy de Wijs could come in to give Yoann Barbet a well-earned rest, with Rob Dickie and Jimmy Dunne completing the defensive unit.

The engine room is expected to experience wholesale changes, however. Osman Kakay and Luke Amos should get rare opportunities to impress from the off along with the more regulars Moses Odubajo, while 30-year-old Stefan Johansen will offer an experienced head in the middle of the park.

Concluding the starting XI should be a strike partnership of Andre Gray for a rare start and Chris Willock just ahead of Ilias Chair, which would mean that the £1.8m-rated Charlie Austin and his strike partner Lyndon Dykes drop to the bench for a rest after both started against Peterborough.

Curran upbeat about Logan Cup

Former Zimbabwe coach Kevin Curran has defended the quality of cricket in the Logan Cup

Steven Price in Harare09-Apr-2009Former Zimbabwe coach Kevin Curran has defended the quality of cricket in the Logan Cup.The tournament has been dogged in recent years by issues of substandard cricket by often substandard cricketers. But Curran, who is coaching leaders Northerns, insisted that things were on the up.”If you would have asked me four years ago if we needed five teams in the Logan Cup I would have told you that we didn’t need that because of the standards. Not anymore,” Curran told the local Independent newspaper. “I think what we need in the Logan Cup is to have five teams. It helps to widen the selection base. That’s what you want.”If you look at the four teams that are currently playing, they each have a squad of 16 players. Some of the players in the squads are not getting game time, and if you were to combine that with Under-19s, you will come out with a fifth side, a very good side.”Despite Curran’s bullish comments, there remain concerns, not only over the standard of play but also of the facilities. The board took a controversial decision to stage all the games in Harare, explaining that this had been done for logistical and financial reasons, but this has not gone down well.”The explanations don’t add up,” a Bulawayo-based administrator told Cricinfo. “We have been assured that there will be meaningful cricket played away from Harare later this year, but what this move has done is to send a clear message that the board has abandoned the game away from the capital.”Even last year the bulk of the players who turned up for the so-called outlying provinces were bussed to games from Harare. The game continues to die away from there, and this latest stunt will only accelerate that decline.”

Aston Villa keen on Eddie Nketiah

Aston Villa are ‘in the queue’ to sign wantaway Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah in January, according to Ekrem Konur.

The lowdown

Nketiah has yet to make the matchday squad for a Premier League game this season, having picked up an ankle injury just before the campaign started.

His only first-team minutes have come in the Carabao Cup clash with AFC Wimbledon, a game in which he scored.

Last season, the England Under-21 international was limited to just four Premier League starts.

Significantly, his contract is up come the end of the season and, according to a report from David Ornstein in August, ‘there is no sign’ of a forthcoming extension.

Arsenal may, therefore, be under pressure to sell their £14.4million-rated asset in January amid the risk of losing him for free.

The latest

Nketiah ‘plans to leave’ The Emirates at the turn of the year because he ‘wants regular first team football’, Konur says.

Villa can expect to face competition from newly-promoted Brentford and from Leeds United, where Nketiah had a spell on loan during the 2019/20 season.

The verdict

It certainly looks as if Nketiah will be leaving the Gunners, but it’s hard to see Villa being his next destination.

If he wants to be playing week-in, week-out, then he surely won’t go to a club where he’ll be behind two other strikers – Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins – in the pecking order.

Perhaps Villa should look in-house if they want to bolster the first team’s attacking ranks. Cameron Archer has been particularly impressive.

In other news, fans flocked to this update on Leon Bailey.
