Viv Richards offers batting consultant role for India

Vivian Richards has offered his services as a batting consultant to the team to help them deal with their weakness against the short ball

Cricinfo staff16-May-2010After India’s early exit from the ICC World Twenty20, the former West Indies legend Vivian Richards has offered his services as a batting consultant to help the the team deal with their weakness against the short ball. Richards, one of the most destructive hitters in the game, said he would like to pass on tips to teams like India on how to deal with aggressive fast bowling. For the second time in succession, India bowed out of a World Twenty20 without registering a win in a single Super Eights game, making it six such losses in a row since England last year. India won both their group games but lost to Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka in the second stage, where teams exploited their shortcomings against the rising deliveries.”I could be a good consultant where batsmanship is concerned and especially where you have such aggressive fast bowling. I can be a little help at some point to teams,” Richards told , the Indian news channel. “I’m available, maybe they (India) will call me sometime to know how to handle such aggression.”Richards pointed to the match against Australia at the Kensington Oval, where India struggled to cope with the pace and aggression of the seam trio of Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes and Mitchell Johnson. India wilted to 50 for 7 by the 11th over and looked in no position to mount the tall target of 185.”The Australians did put the wind up India that particular day. India has to get to the grips with that,” Richards said. “What India can learn from the past is to get some practice against the real aggressive stuff.”Richards’ suggestions are similar to that of former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, who recommended that the Indian batsmen head to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and learn the basics of facing fast bowling on bouncier pitches. Like Gavaskar, Richards did not blame the IPL for under-preparing India for the World Twenty20, where the quality of cricket was higher.”India came into the tournament with the most T20 matches, taking in the IPL factor. I don’t think it’s an excuse in any way. I was in South Africa in 2007 where they won the first T20 tournament and they played magnificently,” Richards said. “Sometimes the ball is in your court sometimes it’s not. What I think India’s got to do at this stage is to see the way the Australians bowled at them and hopefully try and come to grips with the bounce and make the necessary adjustments.”

Bangladesh and Netherlands will do battle on neutral territory in Glasgow•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Two further one-day games have been added to Bangladesh’s tour of England, Ireland and Scotland, with Netherlands and Scotland announcing that they will play a one-dayer each against the touring side in June. Scotland will play Bangladesh on July 19 in Glasgow, which will also serve as the neutral venue for the match against Netherlands the following day.Prior to these games, Bangladesh will be in Ireland, where they will play two ODIs at Stormont in Belfast on July 15 and 16.Richard Cox, the Netherlands board chief executive, believed the games would be an important benchmark for the sides. “This is an exciting opportunity to play an ICC Full Member in Scotland at the end of what will have been a long tour for the exciting Bangladesh squad,” he said.”This game will be a big test for our side and they will be relishing the opportunity to play Bangladesh whose footsteps we hope to follow in years to come. The game will come on the back of the ICC World Cricket League to be held in the Netherlands in June and we therefore hope to be well and truly ready for the challenge.”Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, said the team would be looking forward to the clash, scheduled after England’s visit on June 19. “These games are always a major test for our players and they will be relishing the opportunity to play Bangladesh on home soil,” he said.Richard Holsworth, the ICC Europe regional development manager, also welcomed the fixtures. “Bangladesh agreeing to play Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands in one-day internationals this summer is great news for Europe and these countries. Now that all three high performance countries have a number of professional contracted players it is a hugely important they have regular competition with the Full Member countries.”

Tired Harris savours solid debut

Harris said it was a strange feeling to be in the Australian dressing rooms celebrating a Test win, especially after a winter that included two knee operations

Brydon Coverdale in Wellington24-Mar-2010Ryan Harris has decided that it’s called Test cricket for a reason. Harris bowled 41 overs in his debut match, most of them into a Wellington wind that was so strong that it tipped over the pitch roller. He was in the field for four days in a row, which is tough for anyone, especially a man who had played only one first-class game for the summer.Little wonder that Harris was stiff and sore the day after Australia secured victory, but despite having only three days between matches he is certain he’ll be refreshed in time for Saturday’s second Test. Taking six wickets for the match and grabbing three important victims on the final morning helped his mood considerably, although the team’s celebrations were subdued.”I am pretty tired,” Harris said on Wednesday. “I haven’t played many four-day games [this year] and to do it in those conditions, they were pretty tough conditions with the wind and everything. To make New Zealand follow on and field for nearly 200 overs was a bit of a test. I got through it, I’m a bit tired now, but I’ll be right to go again on Saturday.”I looked after myself last night, so it’s a matter now of keep hydrating in the next couple of days and a bit of a run around probably tomorrow and another one on Friday and get the body moving, and I should be right. I had a couple of quiet beers but didn’t go too hard, none of us did because we have another big Test coming up.”Harris said it was a strange feeling to be in the Australian dressing rooms celebrating a Test win, especially after a winter that included two knee operations. Test cricket was a goal that appeared unattainable at the time, at least in the near future, but Harris has certainly made the most of his chance to wear the baggy green.”I sat last night having a chat with Dad and a few of the boys and we’ve spoken about the last few months and where I nearly was with my knee, and to be sitting there last night with the boys celebrating a Test win, it’s very surreal still,” he said. “I never thought I’d be playing Test cricket, put it that way. I’ve come a fair way and it’s a great feeling, all the hard work to put it all into this and get a baggy green. It’s awesome.”The immediate challenge for Harris is to back up his strong debut with a good performance in Hamilton, but the longer-term goal is to be in the mix for next summer’s home Ashes series. Harris is trying not to look too far ahead but can’t help pondering the possibility of playing in the battle for the urn.”It would be pretty awesome to play Ashes wow,” Harris said. “But that’s a long way ahead yet. I’m worried about the next Test, obviously, and then the World Twenty20 I want to be a part of and then hopefully go to England, so there’s a lot to go before that.”If I just keep performing and taking wickets and bowling well and making it hard for the selectors when the other guys come back to drop me, then that’s what I want to do. That’s what we’ve got to remember, there are still guys to come back into the team who have done really well – Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle. If I just keep performing well and make it hard for them to drop me, that’s what I want to do.”

Liverpool fans love latest Elliott images

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted after new photos showing Harvey Elliott recovering from his serious injury emerged.

The Reds have had to make do without the talented 18-year-old since the middle of September after he suffered a broken ankle away to Leeds United.

It was a cruel blow for Elliott, who had made a hugely promising start to the season, making three Premier League starts in the early weeks of the campaign.

The midfielder has been making admirable progress in his recovery, however, and it now looks as though he could even feature as soon as next month.

On Monday, Liverpool’s official Twitter account posted photos of Elliott in action on the training pitch, suggesting his recovery is going swimmingly, as he is even working with a ball already.

Sheff Wed fans slam Kamberi v Portsmouth

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans were critical of Florian Kamberi’s performance in their 0-0 draw at Portsmouth in League One on Tuesday night.

The Owls perhaps would have settled for a point in the end as Massimo Luongo was given a straight red card for violent conduct in the 69th minute, meaning that they had to hold out for more than 20 minutes with 10 men on the field.

However, when a team goes down a player, they really need the help of the forwards to hold the ball up and bring others into play whenever they can attack.

Alas, Kamberi struggled while Wednesday had 11 men, let alone 10, as he lost out on all seven of his duels and also failed to record a single shot on goal or dribble. In addition, he was guilty of losing possession of the ball seven times in total during the game (SofaScore).

These Owls fans slammed his performance on Twitter, with one supporter even going as far as to claim that he is a ‘poor man’s Stevie May’, referring to the Scottish striker who only managed seven goals in his 42-match Wednesday career:

Romano gives key update on LFC target Gavi

Rumoured Liverpool transfer target Gavi looks set to commit his long-term future to Barcelona, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Gavi linked with Reds move

The 17-year-old has burst onto the scene and looks like the next great player to have emerged from Barca’s ranks, making his Spain debut already and winning three caps.

Liverpool were linked with a move for Gavi last month in what was an exciting rumour, considering the potential that the midfielder appears to have.

With Blaugrana legend Xavi taking charge at the Nou Camp, however, the situation surrounding the teenager’s future now looks more clear.

The Latest: Romano shuts down transfer

According to Romano on Twitter, a long-term contract offer is on the table for Gavi, with the player himself wanting to stay put at Barcelona. The journalist posted:

“Barcelona are prepared to enter in the final stages of Gavi’s new contract negotiation. The long-term proposal [salary increasing from year to year] will be on the table soon… and Gavi wants to stay.

“Xavi also approved Barça board plan to keep Gavi for the next years.”

The Verdict: Always unlikely

While the idea of Gavi trading Barca for Liverpool was an exciting one, there was always a feeling that he would end up remaining at the club where he has come through the ranks.

At 17, it would have been a shock if the Spaniard had upped sticks and moved on so soon. However, should the Catalan giants continue to struggle as they have been this season, his mindset could change eventually.

Football legend Lionel Messi has hailed Gavi as ‘very good’, which speaks volumes about the teenager’s potential, and it will be intriguing to see if the Reds keep an eye on his progress.

Broad ruled out with knee problem

Stuart Broad has been ruled out of England’s final two one-day internationals against Australia after experiencing pain in his right knee

Stuart Broad has been ruled out of England’s final two one-day internationals against Australia after experiencing pain in his right knee. Broad is not in doubt for the Champions Trophy but the England team’s medical staff felt it was wise to allow the allrounder an extra few days of rest before departing for South Africa.A tendon in Broad’s right knee became inflamed after the fifth ODI at Trent Bridge, which Australia won to take a 5-0 lead in the seven-match contest. Broad experienced discomfort in the knee for the better part of two years, but only in recent days did the pain increase to the point where sidelining him became necessary. James Anderson returned from his designated rest period to replace Broad in the starting XI for the sixth ODI against Australia at Trent Bridge.”Stuart has had a niggling injury to his right knee for some time which had been manageable and until recently had not led to him missing any cricket,” England chief medical officer, Nick Peirce, said. “This ongoing niggle, a tendinopathy, or inflammation to the tendon, has recently flared.”This requires rest and as a result Stuart won’t be available for England’s final two matches of the NatWest Series. We expect Stuart to play a full part in the forthcoming Champions Trophy after which time he will undertake a strengthening programme prior to England’s tour of South Africa.”Broad is the latest England player to suffer an injury this summer. Allrounder Luke Wright was ruled out of the last three games after breaking his toe while facing a bowling machine in Loughborough, while Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff missed the entire one-day series after undergoing surgery.

3 Leeds players who struggled v Leicester

Leeds United drew 1-1 with Leicester City on Sunday in an end-to-end Premier League encounter.

The Whites took the lead through Raphinha’s free kick after an entertaining start at Elland Road, but then conceded 10 seconds following the restart with Harvey Barnes curling the ball past Illan Meslier.

Ademola Lookman had the ball in the hosts’ net in the second half but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review, meaning that the teams ended all-square.

Some Leeds players struggled in a frantic encounter, as The Transfer Tavern looks at the three worst-rated outfield starters as per statistical specialists SofaScore…

Jack Harrison – 6.2/10

Leeds’ worst-rated starter was Harrison, losing possession a whopping 21 times. The 24-year-old was making his eighth Premier League start of the campaign but is still awaiting his first goal involvement.

Harrison lost 12 of his 18 duels, failed to complete an accurate cross and missed a big chance to put the Whites back in front during the second half.

Kalvin Phillips – 6.4/10

Phillips is next on the list, ending with an average rating of 6.4/10. He lost the ball on 16 occasions, was second best in 12 of his 15 duels and didn’t complete a cross or tackle.

The England international also committed five fouls and ended with a pass completion rate of 76% as he fell well below his best at Elland Road this afternoon.

Rodrigo – 6.5/10

Along with Adam Forshaw, who was substituted and therefore had slightly less time to prove his worth this afternoon, Rodrigo was Leeds’ joint-third worst performer today.

He gave the ball away on 18 occasions, lost four duels and failed to make a tackle all afternoon. The forward also struggled offensively, not registering a cross throughout the game.
