Pepsi to sponsor DRS for Pakistan series

The PCB has announced that the DRS will be used for Pakistan’s series against Sri Lanka that starts later this month and for their one-day series against England early next year

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Oct-2011The PCB has announced that the DRS will be used for Pakistan’s series against Sri Lanka that starts later this month and for their one-day series against England early next year, and that Pepsi will be sponsoring the system, making them the first board to have a sponsor associated with the review system. The version of the DRS Pakistan will be using includes ball-tracking technology provided by Hawk-Eye.”PCB is pleased to be taking a leading role in the use of ICC-recommended technologies for international cricket,” Subhan Ahmad, the PCB’s chief operating officer, said in a statement. “We hope that other partner boards will follow the example of the PCB and use the umpire [decision] review system in their respective future series. The use of the UDRS will bring added value to our forthcoming series. We thank our sponsors Pepsi for once again supporting Pakistan cricket and the PCB in its many endeavours.”Pakistan’s decision to implement the DRS came on the same day the ICC ended the mandatory use of the system and reverted to its pre-June position, by which its use will be subject to bilateral agreements between the participating boards. However, the ICC said it will continue to use support the use of technology and welcomed the PCB’s decision.”We believe that using the Decision Review System will result in getting more umpire decisions correct and we accordingly welcome the PCB’s initiatives and that of its sponsors in securing its use in the upcoming series,” Dave Richardson, the ICC’s general manager – cricket, said. “The PCB has always led the way in supporting innovation. Its trials of a “pink/orange ball” in day/night conditions during its premier first-class matches is another example. These initiatives are much appreciated.”

Netherlands hope to make an impact

For a country with the limited cricket resources of the Netherlands, making their fourth World Cup is an impressive effort. They are the least likely to cause an upset, especially with Ireland being the other minnow in their group, but they certainly won’t suffer from a lack of desire and determination. You only have to ask England about that. Remember Lord’s in 2009? It may have been Twenty20 and not 50-over cricket, but Netherlands’ final-ball victory in the opening match of the tournament was one of the biggest shocks in cricket history. And, in a neat fluke of scheduling, their first match in the World Cup is against Andrew Strauss’s team. Only one team has anything to lose in that one. However, as with the likes of Ireland, Kenya and Canada – not to mention the Associates who narrowly missed out, such as Afghanistan – this is looking like a last hurrah at this major global event. With ten teams slated for the 2015 tournament, even though TV rights say there have to be the same number of matches, the smaller nations are being pushed aside. Netherlands will be desperate not to go out with a whimper. The batting is reasonably strong – Ryan ten Doeschate is their main man; Tom Cooper plays for South Australia and Alexi Kervezee has impressed for Worcestershire – but in subcontinent conditions against the clumping bats of the major nations, the bowlers could come in for some harsh treatment. They’ll all be hoping not to go the same way as Daan van Bunge at the 2007 World Cup, when Herschelle Gibbs took him for six sixes in an over at St Kitts.World Cup PedigreeHave appeared at the 1996, 2003 and 2007 World Cups but have just two victories, against Namibia and Scotland, to show for their efforts, while the defeats have been by huge margins. Their best effort was probably against India in 2003, at Paarl, when they managed to bowl out a star-stubbed batting line-up for 204. Time de Leede took 4 for 35.Form guideThey haven’t played a one-day international since August when they lost two matches against Ireland, which doesn’t bode well for their meeting in this tournament. However, before that they upset Bangladesh with six-wicket victory, so they’ll harbour hopes that a major scalp isn’t beyond their reach.Where they are likely to finishThey won’t get out of the group, but their aim should be to cause some of the big teams uncomfortable moments. Their World Cup comes when they face Ireland on March 18 in their final group match.WatchabilityThe batting has some fine stroke-makers, led by Ryan ten Doeschate of Essex, and if he gets going, he likes to deal in boundaries. When the bowlers come up against the likes of Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers, it could be a time to cover your eyes and wish them the best.Players in focusRyan ten Doeschate has established himself as a fine Twenty20 cricketer, so much so that he put his name into the IPL auction and was signed by Tasmania for Australia’s Big Bash. But he is more than a hit-and-hope batsman and has the ability to build long innings. His ODI average is a Bevan-esque 68.55 and his strike-rate a powerful 87. Against his Associate peers has sometimes looks a class above, so this global stage is the perfect chance for him to show he can perform against the best. Netherlands will need all the runs he can manage. His medium-pace bowling is also useful and his experience under pressure in the professional game will be vital. There are more than 15 Australian cricketers at this World Cup. Tom Cooper is part of South Australia’s squad but by virtue of his Dutch mother is plying his trade for Netherlands when opportunities arise. He brings solidity, and a bit of Aussie toughness, to the top order and will be important in seeing off any early movement from the new ball. Has good memories of facing some of the West Indian bowlers he’ll come up against after making 160 for the Prime Minister’s XI at Canberra in 2009-10.If you listen to some watchers of county cricket, Alexei Kervezee will have a career with England. His first-class average is only 37, but that’s rising after he made 1190 Championship runs in 2010. At ODI level for Netherlands he has still to fulfil his talent, with an average of 26.56 and a top score of 92. If he really harbours ambitions of an international career above Associate level, the next month is the ideal shop window.

Kolkata sign up Iqbal Abdulla

Iqbal Abdulla, the Mumbai left-arm spinner, has signed a two-year deal with Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the fourth season of the IPL. Abdulla, who is also a useful lower-order batsman, was at Kolkata for the first three seasons, having been picked as their Under-19 draft in the first season, and now returns as an uncapped signing. “We needed a specialist Indian spinner to accompany Shakib [al Hasan] and Yusuf Pathan and we are happy to get Iqbal,” a Kolkata spokesperson said.Kolkata are talking to at least 10 or 12 uncapped players, some of whom played for the team in the first three editions of the IPL. Bengal allrounder Laxmi Shukla, Haryana wicketkeeper-batsman Manvinder Bisla and Delhi middle-order veteran Rajat Bhatia are some of the other names the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise is in talks with it.Though Mumbai, the defending champions, were knocked out by Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals this year, Abdulla had a good season, ending as their top wicket-taker with 27 victims at an average of 22.11 in addition to notching up his maiden Ranji century, an unbeaten 150 against Saurashtra in their opening match. Abdulla averaged 47.75 with the bat in eight matches in the Ranji season. When Mumbai defended their crown in the 2009-10 season, Abdulla had a tally of 32 wickets.Even though teams have until March 8 to sign uncapped players for the IPL, which starts on April 8, franchise owners and officials have shown desperation in the last few days to latch on to quality youngsters as soon as possible.Kings XI Punjab have been lucky to get back three players who were part of their squad in the previous seasons: Punjab allrounder Love Ablish, Himachal Pradesh fast bowler Vikramjeet Malik and Uttar Pradesh left-arm quick Shalabh Srivastava have decided to stay with Punjab for the next two years. The franchise has also signed Sunny Singh and Nitin Saini, centurions for Haryana in the Ranji quarterfinals this year against Tamil Nadu, along with 23-year-old batsman Siddharth Chitnis, who made his first-class debut for Mumbai this year. The BCCI has also made it clear that it is the players that have the final say on which team they wish to join. “Franchises have full rights to scout for players in their catchment area, but uncapped players have the right to negotiate,” Niranjan Shah, BCCI vice-president, told . “We are also keeping a close watch on any underhand dealings between the players and the franchises. All agreement will be tripartite, involving the board, the player and the franchise.”

Spurs: O’Rourke makes fresh Ndombele claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has made a fresh behind-the-scenes claim involving Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and manager Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Days numbered?

Recent reports suggest that Spurs’ club-record signing may well be on the way out of north London permanently this summer as Conte makes his decision.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Evening Standard and Football Insider both back that Tottenham’s manager doesn’t see a future for Ndombele at N17, so much so that the Lilywhites will entertain offers from clubs to take him off their hands permanently.

Ndombele parting company may well be a determining factor in Conte having money to spend this summer as the club aim to boost their transfer kitty as much as possible.

The Latest: O’Rourke makes fresh Ndombele claim…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke believes there may have been a behind-the-scenes fall out with Conte, with the pair not seeing ‘eye-to-eye’.

He explained: “It seemed him and Conte didn’t see eye-to-eye, so they tried to rush through this January loan move back to Lyon, which was the only move they could do.

“In the summer it will give them maybe more time to explore and see if they can seek a permanent exit. It’ll all come down to price and what Spurs are looking for, but I’m sure there will be interested clubs and Lyon would love to make it permanent.”

The Verdict: Time to sell…

The France international will continue earning a salary of around £10,400,000-per-year upon returning to Spurs from his loan, if Lyon don’t make his move permanent.

An arguable drain on Spurs’ wage bill an overall funds, it is in transfer chief Fabio Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy’s best interest to successfully negotiate a sale as one of their first actions of the summer window.

His ability is obvious, with Tim Sherwood calling Ndombele a ‘maverick’ and Son Heung-min once branding the midfielder ‘unbelievable’, but his skills have always been marred by questions surrounding his application.

Bermuda fold on first day

Scorecard
Bermuda endured a nightmarish first day in their Intercontinental Shield match against United Arab Emirates, crumbling for 56 after opting to bat first and then conceding a 136-run lead as UAE closed on 192 for 2, opener Arshad Ali unbeaten on 75.Bermuda’s troubles started early, as their opening pair of Chris Foggo and Fiqre Crockwell were parted in the second over. What followed was carnage, the highest partnership of the innings a mere 18 as every batsman apart from Foggo was dismissed for six runs or less. The wickets were shared around by UAE’s bowlers, but left-arm spinners Shadeep Silva and Ahmed Raza proved particularly destructive. Raza found himself on a hat-trick in the 21st over as Foggo, who struck three fours and a six in his 29, and Stefan Kelly departed in consecutive balls.Joshua Gilbert survived the hat-trick ball, and he and Jordan DeSilva survived another 10 overs before Amjad Javed returned to trap DeSilva lbw and Gilbert was run out four balls later.Bermuda deflated further as Abdul Rehman and Arshad put on a steady 94 for the first wicket before Rehman was pinned infront by Rodney Trott for 65. Arshad then added 46 with captain Khurram Khan, registering his seventh first-class fifty and securing UAE’s dominance with an unbeaten 52-run stand in Saqib Ali’s company.

Aston Villa: Mings impressed v Everton

Following on from their 2-2 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League last weekend, when they came from 2-0 down in the second half, Aston Villa secured all three points in their latest league outing with a 1-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon.

A headed goal from Emiliano Buendia just before half-time was enough to win the game for Steven Gerrard’s side against the struggling Toffees.

The Argentine was not the only Villa player who impressed on the day, with defender Tyrone Mings putting in the sort of performance which would leave his manager delighted.

Throughout the entire match, Mings was Villa’s defensive rock by racking up five clearances – with one off the goal-line – one tackle, one interception and two blocks (as per SofaScore), so it’s fair to say that he made a somewhat heroic contribution to his team recording a clean sheet as well as victory.

The defender also won six duels, showing how difficult he made it for Everton’s attacking figures such as Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin this afternoon.

This performance ultimately earned the England international an impressive overall match rating of 8.1/10, making him Villa’s highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore and arguably Gerrard’s hero of the hour.

Birmingham Live’s Ashley Preece also picked up on the 28-year-old’s “excellent” display by saying that he “showed real leadership once again, blocking and clearing everything that came his way while he headed Godfrey’s goal-bound effort away as Everton pressed after the break.”

Having been praised in the past by former Villa attacker Gabby Agbonlahor for his “outstanding” performances on the international stage for England, Mings showed today that he is capable of delivering solid displays for his club as well, and that he is worthy of donning the captain’s armband.

Moving forward, if the 28-year-old can keep producing this standard of performance on a regular basis throughout the remainder of the season, he will surely give Villa every chance of comfortably finishing in the top half in the final Premier League table.
