Jose Mourinho vs Arsene Wenger: A war of words

The managers will go head-to-head for the final time in the league this week. Goal looks back at the fierce words they have exchanged over the years

As Jose Mourinho paid respect to Arsene Wenger after his imminent Arsenal exit was announced, it seemed to confirm a recent shift in the relationship between the managers.

The Manchester United boss spoke of his "respect" for his Gunners counterpart  when asked for his reaction to the news the Frenchman's reign in north London will come to an end at the end of the season.

At first, it sounded like a rare moment of diplomacy from Mourinho as one of his favourite verbal sparring partners bows out of the Premier League. However, having heard Wenger admit his "support" for the Portuguese and parise his team earlier this season, it could be that the animosity that has separated them over the years has died down.

United host Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday in a game that will see the legendary managers go head-to-head on the field for the last time.

Here, Goal looks at the finest moments off of it.

Getty ImagesWenger's whatabouteryFacing criticism for fielding an all-foreign team against Crystal Palace in February 2005, Wenger hit back with a dig at Chelsea's policy under Mourinho: "Take what Arsenal and Chelsea have won in the past eight years. I go with reality, with the football we play and the challenge we have ahead. I don't see especially that Chelsea play more English players than we do. Who have they produced, homegrown? Just one, John Terry."AdvertisementGetty Images‘Mourinho is a danger!’

The following August, a more subtle hint was directed towards coaches of the Portuguese’s ilk, when Wenger took a stand against more defensive approaches in football.

"I know we live in a world where we have only winners and losers, but once a sport encourages teams who refuse to take the initiative, the sport is in danger."

Getty ImagesWenger The Voyeur?

Two months later, Mourinho sniped back, suggesting Wenger had a rather ominous obsession with the Blues.

“Wenger has a real problem with us and I think he is what you call in England ‘a voyeur’. He is someone who likes to watch other people. There are some guys who, when they are at home, have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. Wenger must be one of them – it is a sickness. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea.”

BEN STANSALLThat’s stupid!

The Frenchman was irked by such a suggestion and hit out at Mourinho as "stupid", even considering taking legal action against him.

"I find it out of order, disconnected with reality and disrespectful. I will see if I take any action. I don't know yet but I will leave that door open. I don't know what I said that was malicious.

“When you give success to stupid people, it makes them more stupid sometimes and not more intelligent.”

Handscomb's century sets up Victoria's victory push

Victoria closed in on an outright victory over their nearest challenger South Australia on the penultimate night of the floodlit Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval.Victoria saw off four South Australia batsmen before stumps, two falling to Fawad Ahmed in a spell of 2 for 10 that was both threatening and economical. The hosts’ captain Travis Head (35*) is left with an enormous task to pull his side out of the mire. There had been plenty of purpose to Victoria’s batting earlier in the day as they set up a declaration. Peter Handscomb glided to an attractive century while Glenn Maxwell contributed his second half century of the match, a nicely modulated 63 from 109 deliveries.Matthew Wade and Dan Christian then accelerated, adding 70 in 13.3 overs before Victoria’s captain decided he had a sufficient lead. Should the Bushrangers win, the prospect of a competition final played in Alice Springs will become a distinct possibility.

Curran's all-round quality gives Surrey a lift

Leicestershire’s elation after pulling off their first Championship win since September 2012 was tinged with reality as promotion contenders Surrey gave them a thumping at Grace Road

ScorecardTom Curran had a fine all-round game in Surrey’s victory•Getty ImagesAfter the euphoria of ending their long run of 37 championship matches without a win at Essex the previous week, Leicestershire’s heavy defeat against Surrey served as a reminder that they still have plenty of work to do. Surrey, meanwhile, keep up the pressure on Lancashire at the top of the Division Two table.Tom Curran, with a fine all-round display, added energy to Surrey’s display, giving them the verve they will need to remain in contention at the top of the table.A burst of three wickets in the first two overs after lunch put Surrey on their way to a conclusive three-day victory at Grace Road. The second ball after the break saw Chris Tremlett produce a superb delivery that straightened and bowled Foxes opener Angus Robson. In the following over Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove got a brute of a ball from Curran that reared off a length to take the shoulder of the bat and loop gently to gully, and two balls later, Andrea Agathangelou was leg before to a delivery that seamed back in and kept a little low.Confidence remains – McKay

Australian all-rounder Clint McKay said Leicestershire knew they still had many areas where they needed to improve after slumping to a three day defeat by Surrey at Grace Road.
“It’s extremely disappointing after the up of beating Essex last week to come down as we did, especially after a great first day and a bit, when we’d bowled them out for 261 and were 100-0,” said McKay.
“We knew the wicket would seam sometimes, and the bounce might be a bit variable, but we didn’t play the conditions well enough, especially with the bat, although we did take 20 wickets again, which is pleasing.
“The confidence we take from the win against Essex doesn’t dissipate overnight. We know when we put four days of cricket together and follow the game plan we will win the game. We’ll fight back against Lancashire next week.”

Had Niall O’Brien not been dropped by Gary Wilson off Curran before scoring, the Surrey wicketkeeper getting his hand to a low chance diving to his left but failing to hang on, Leicestershire might have subsided in short order, but O’Brien went on to score a run a ball 50 before edging left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari to Wilson.Ned Eckersley and Ben Raine also fought hard, but on a wicket with increasingly variable bounce, the prospect of the home team chasing down the 356 they need to win the game was always going to be slim, and the end came shortly after tea, when James Burke picked up two wickets in two balls, both lbw, to end the game.Earlier, Leicestershire made the worst possible start after Surrey added 67 to their overnight score of 217-6, with Steve Davies, batting with a badly bruised hand, finishing with an unbeaten 47.Foxes’ opener Matt Boyce was leg before wicket to Matt Dunn’s first delivery, and it could have been even worse if Rory Burns had been able to cling on to a difficult chance at second slip after Robson edged a drive at Chris Tremlett in the following over, also before Leicestershire had scored a run.

Gurney and Patel help Notts take hold

Nottinghamshire are in a strong position to start their County Championship campaign with a victory after dominating the second day against Middlesex at Lord’s

ScorecardSamit Patel’s three wickets helped put Nottinghamshire in a strong position•Getty ImagesNottinghamshire are in a strong position to start their County Championship campaign with a victory after dominating the second day against Middlesex at Lord’s.Although they missed out on a third batting bonus point when they were dismissed for 298 in the first over of the day, Nottinghamshire bowled out Middlesex for 181 with Harry Gurney and Samit Patel each taking three wickets.Going in again with a lead of 117, Nottinghamshire openers Steven Mullaney and Brendan Taylor, who made a century in the first innings, put on 77 before Mullaney was bowled by Tom Helm and Taylor was caught at long-off off Tim Murtagh, but they will resume in a position of strength on 101 for 2, a lead of 218.It became a chastening day for Middlesex made worse by the absence of Dawid Malan, who was unable to bat after breaking his finger on the first day. Malan is due to see a specialist to assess the extent of the injury. It had started well enough with Steven Finn having last man Gurney caught at backward point off the second ball of the day to deny Nottinghamshire a third batting point.Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins then put on 51 for the first wicket when Middlesex replied, but the innings went into steady decline once Gurney had moved one back up the Lord’s slope to bowl Gubbins for 23.Nick Compton, in his first innings since returning to Lord’s from Somerset, never settled and was bowled by Vernon Philander for 3 by one that nipped back off the seam. The procession continued after lunch once Nottinghamshire had removed the adhesive Robson for 35 when he offered no shot to Jake Ball’s third ball of the session and lost his off stump. Nottinghamshire’s seam attack relished a green-tinged pitch offering some lateral movement with Gurney and Ball bowling superbly in tandem as they made further inroads.Stand-in skipper Adam Voges got a faint edge when Gurney moved one off the pitch and in the next over Ball surprised Paul Stirling with extra bounce and Patel took the catch above his head at second slip.Batting looked a little easier once the ball had lost its hardness and the sun came out with John Simpson and James Harris adding 40 for the sixth wicket with few alarms.Nottinghamshire skipper Chris Read turned to Patel’s left-arm spin and the hunch paid off with two wickets in three balls with Harris leg before playing back – Patel’s 200th first-class wicket – and Helm offering no shot.Gurney took his third wicket when Simpson was betrayed by a lack of footwork as he prodded to first slip and Taylor ended the innings by taking a fine running catch at deep midwicket to remove Murtagh for 19 and give Patel his third wicket.

Stevens and Bollinger run riot

Darren Stevens and Doug Bollinger combined today to put Kent in apparent control of a curious match that started a day-and-a-half late

ScorecardDarren Stevens claimed his first five-wicket haul of the season (file photo)•Getty ImagesDarren Stevens and Doug Bollinger combined today to put Kent in apparent control of a curious match that started a day-and-a-half late but then provided intriguing and engrossing cricket, and held out the prospect of a positive result which at lunchtime seemed very unlikely.Their combined figures were 10 for 53 from 32.3 overs, and they were all over Derbyshire from the first ball. Only Alex Hughes was able to offer extended resistance for the home side as they were dismissed for 118, and they will need someone to emulate the Kent seamers’ efforts on Tuesday if they are to stay in contention.Last September, Stevens swept the board at the Kent awards: best bowler, best batsman, best fielder, best player. These were on the back of 1304 first-class runs, 32 first-class wickets, and 25 catches in all competitions. He’s become Kent’s “Mr Reliable”, and he led the way when play finally got underway at a soggy County Ground at 2.35pm.There’s nothing apparently threatening about Stevens’ approach to the crease. In fact he decelerates almost to the point of standstill before entering his delivery stride. But he is unrelentingly accurate and rarely gives the batsman scope for extravagance. He came on to bowl the tenth over of the innings from the Racecourse End and had a wicket with his first ball, Paul Borrington edging high to second slip where Adam Riley clung on above his head. He took the most prized Derbyshire wicket, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, lbw to the last ball before tea – one that kept a little low – then Scott Elstone in a similar manner.Later in the day he took a slip catch to dispose of Gareth Cross, then castled Mark Footitt to polish off the innings shortly after he had Tim Groenewald caught brilliantly, diving to his right at short midwicket, by the least athletic-looking Kent player, Rob Key.Bollinger is Kent’s Australian overseas player, a beast of a fast bowler. He runs off 18 paces, bristling with intent, and brings his left arm over fluidly and strong. Apart from Hughes, who finished unbeaten on 36, nobody in the Derbyshire side appeared comfortable against him.Well over 24 hours after Key won the toss and did the inevitable by putting Derbyshire in, Bollinger bowled the first ball of the match and the batsmen were soon struggling. Bollinger bowled with hostility, making liberal use of a rapid short ball, and took the first wicket with the 13th ball of the innings, trapping Stephen Moore on the back foot. Not long later he had Derbyshire’s captain, Wayne Madsen, prodding to Brendan Nash at point. Then later he brought an end to Cross’ first innings since being signed up. Elstone had the misfortune to face his very first ball in first-class cricket from Bollinger and was fortunate that his nick fell just short of wicketkeeper Sam Billings. His eventual 23 was the second-highest score of the innings.Cross and Hughes added 46 for the sixth wicket but the last four fell for 15 runs, and once Key and Sam Northeast had negotiated the remaining three overs unscathed it was good-looking day for Kent.

Pakistan prevail in last-over finish

A score of 137 wouldn’t have appeared a match-winning one at the halfway stage of the match, but Afghanistan’s bowlers made Pakistan fight till the final ball. Pakistan preserved wickets through their chase and though they lost only four, they were made to sweat against a side brimming with confidence having recently sealed their berth in the upcoming World T20. Mohammad Hafeez kept Pakistan afloat with an unbeaten 42 to set up a six-wicket win in the first ever T20 between the two countries. At the start of the penultimate over, bowled by Hamid Hassan, Pakistan were still comfortably placed needing 16 with a set Hafeez on 32. Sohaib Maqsood’s run out off the fourth ball gave Afghanistan hope but Hafeez calmed the nerves in the Pakistan camp with a streaky, under-edged boundary past the keeper off the last ball to bring the equation down to six from six.Shahid Afridi pushed the first ball by the seamer Dawlat Zadran to midwicket for a single but Hafeez left the next, expecting it to be called a wide. Afghanistan had a chance to run out Hafeez off the third when he took a risky single to cover and nearly gave up. Zadran then employed the bouncer against Afridi but it backfired with the umpire penalising him for height. Afridi slogged and missed the next ball and stole a bye. Hafeez pinched a single to point, levelling the scores before the last ball. Zadran banged in another bouncer but it cost Afghanistan dear as it was signaled a no ball. The finish was an anti-climax from the way Pakistan started. The openers Ahmed Shehzad and Sharjeel Khan had added 49 in 7.4 overs before Shehzad was caught at deep midwicket off Samiullah Shenwari. Shehzad dominated the stand with six fours. Sharjeel, on debut, made a steady 18 before he was caught at point off the off spin of Mohammad Nabi.Afghanistan tightened things up conceding only 15 off the next three overs and no boundaries. Hafeez broke the drought when he launched Shenwari over long-on in the 14th over, leaving Pakistan 49 to get off the last six. Two more sixes, by Umar Akmal, brought the equation down to 27 off 23, comfortably in Pakistan’s favour. However, immediately after launching Dawlat over long-on, Akmal dragged the next ball onto his stumps to give Afghanistan relief. However, Hafeez’s presence meant that Pakistan still held the edge, despite Afghanistan’s comeback. The pressure began to mount with 21 required off 14, but a four to deep midwicket by Hafeez released the pressure and the captain took it upon himself to stay till the end and avoid a repeat of their shocking collapse against South Africa in an ODI at the same venue recently.Earlier, a combined performance by Pakistan’s bowlers restricted Afghanistan to a middling total. Afghanistan struggled to get going at the start, the score reading a sorry 8 for 2 after five overs. Asghar Stanikzai broke the shackles with two sixes in one over off Zulfiqar Babar but he fell soon after, bowled by Bilawal Bhatti. The middle order, led by Najibullah Zadran, made starts but regular strikes kept them in check. Afghanistan had recovered well to score 92 in an eight-over period, ending in the 15th over. However, Pakistan clawed back by dismissing Najibullah for 38 and Afghanistan managed only 37 off the last five overs. In the final analysis, a few more could have made the difference.
