Liverpool now "hopeful" youngster will return from knee surgery this season

A "brilliant" Liverpool talent's expected return date from injury has been revealed, courtesy of an update from journalist David Lynch.

Liverpool injury news

The Reds continue to excel this season, with Sunday's 4-0 win away to Bournemouth in the Premier League one of their most impressive results of the campaign. The fact that they did it without so many injured key players also says a huge amount about the squad Jurgen Klopp has built.

Liverpool had to make do without two world-class full-backs in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, the latter of whom has been absent for a number of months but is expected back soon, while Joel Matip is out for the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage.

Meanwhile, teenage talent Ben Doak is recovering from knee surgery, influentiual midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is also missing, Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic are long-term absentees, and Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo have been away on international duty – Salah has just returned to Liverpool for treatment on a hamstring injury.

Injuries need to ease as the season goes on for the Reds to stand a chance in so many competitions, and a slighty more optimistic update has emerged regarding one stricken figure.

Ben Doak's injury return date revealed

Taiking to X, Lynch claimed that Liverpool attacker Ben Doak could return to action in April, after initial timelines suggested his knee injury would keep him out for the entire season.

Ben Doak

"A small update on Ben Doak’s fitness: Liverpool winger is hopeful of appearing again this season after undergoing knee surgery, with an April return being tentatively targeted."

This is positive news for Doak, who will still be dreaming of forcing his way into Scotland's plan at Euro 2024 this summer, even though his chances of doing so now look far less likely than they did before his injury. The 18-year-old is an attacking player of huge potential, with all-time Liverpool great Sir Kenny Dalglish lauding him earlier in the campaign:

"He certainly looks the part. He will get there eventually but let's not push him too quickly. The wee man has done brilliant at Liverpool."

Granted, Doak is still a very young player who certainly isn't a key starter for Klopp, but there is a fearlessness and unpredictability about him out wide that always makes him an eye-catching option from the substitutes' bench, so he could be especially useful in Europa League and domestic cup matches. The Scot has all the raw ingredients to be a sensational footballer over time, as long as he matures when it comes to his final ball.

Lots will be made of replacing Mohamed Salah when the Liverpool legend does eventually leave Anfield – the hope is that it won't be for a while yet – but in Doak, the Reds have someone with such a high ceiling who could even end up saving them a huge amount of money on a big-name signing, depending on how he progresses moving forward.

To have him back for the run-in would be great news, and while he may not feature much, having his pace and directness when opposition legs are tiring can only be a good thing.

Josh Philippe, James Vince topple Hobart Hurricanes

They added an unbroken 167 – the highest for the second wicket in the BBL – to power Sydney Sixers to second place

The Report by Alex Malcolm23-Jan-2019A record-breaking partnership between Josh Philippe and James Vince led the Sydney Sixers to a thumping win over BBL leaders Hobart Hurricanes at the SCG.Philippe, the 21-year-old tyro, and Vince, the wily English pro, broke all manner of records as they mowed down a target of 173 with nine wickets and 17 balls to spare. The pair came together at 1 for 6 in the first over and put on an unbroken 167 in just 16.3 overs. It was a new record partnership for Sixers franchise, the fourth highest in BBL history and the highest second-wicket stand in the eight years of the competition. Philippe, whose previous best in T20s was 30 not out, batted through the chase, making 86 not out from just 49 balls with nine fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, Vince made 74 not out, his second straight score of 70-plus.Earlier, the Hurricanes’ total of 4 for 172 looked competitive on a turning SCG track but ended up being well under par. Matthew Wade made yet another half-century and put on another half-century stand with D’Arcy Short. But they battled to get the Sixers spinners Ben Manenti and Steve O’Keefe away in the middle overs, and without a late cameo from George Bailey may well have fallen short of 170.1 for 225
Wade and Short just continued from their unbroken 158-run stand to beat the Adelaide Strikers none down. There was sharp spin in the opening over from Manenti, which meant caution was required early. But they found their groove yet again. They were simply flawless while keeping the rate above eight by targeting the pace of Tom Curran and Sean Abbott with five boundaries in the last three overs to get to 0 for 49 after six overs. It was the fifth time in 10 games they did not lose a wicket in the Powerplay. They kicked on to their ninth 50-plus partnership in the BBL, and the total partnership across the last two games reached 225 before Short holed out at deep midwicket.James Vince brought up his half-century off 36 balls•Getty ImagesBetter Bailey than neverWade reached fifty and was involved in some verbal niggle with Tom Curran and Moises Henriques. But while a 67-run stand between Wade and Ben McDermott appeared to be putting the Hurricanes in a powerful position, the run-rate slipped under eight as the spin of Manenti and O’Keefe proved hard to collar.Wade’s dismissal brought in Bailey, who has been arguably the most valuable player in the tournament for the role that he plays. Under pressure in the death overs he has delivered time and again. He gave himself four balls to get the pace of the wicket in the 18th and 19th overs but none were dots. In the 20thover he hit two fours and an incredible six over long-off, scooping it with the bottom hand. He scored 22 from nine balls to turn a total of 160 into 4 for 172. He now has 264 runs in the tournament at a strike-rate of 161.96. No other player in the tournament with more than 250 runs has a strike-rate higher than 145.Philippe fireworks
Philippe dominated the Powerplays in the JLT Cup 50-over competition for Western Australia in October at the top of the order. He then plundered 57 off 53 balls for the Prime Minister’s XI facing two of the world’s best fast bowlers in Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada in the Powerplay. But it took the Sydney Sixers nine games and four different openers to work out Philippe might be worth a try at the top. After scoring 17 off 11 to give the Sixers a fast start in the win over Brisbane Heat, he stepped up a gear on Wednesday. He lost his opening partner Daniel Hughes in the first over of the chase, but proceeded to smash 46 off 22 in the Powerplay to help the Sixers to 67 for 1, the equal-highest Powerplay score of the tournament. The best attack in the BBL was rendered helpless by Philippe’s fast hands and fast feet. He scored all around the ground, thumping three boundaries off the spin of Clive Rose and three off the pace of Jofra Archer in consecutive overs.Vintage Vince
Philippe cruised to his first T20 half-century off just 25 balls and allowed Vince to settle in. The pair scored at an electric rate without appearing to take too many risks. Not only did they thump 15 fours and five sixes between them, they also ran 12 twos. Vince cruised to his second successive fifty while Philippe crowned his career-best 86 not out with two extraordinary shots to finish the game – an inside out cover drive for six followed by a deft scoop over the keeper’s head.

'If anyone thought last year was a fluke, we have proven ourselves again'

Faiz Fazal and Chandrakant Pandit, Vidarbha’s captain and coach, speak about what it took for the team to win back-to-back Ranji Trophy titles

Saurabh Somani in Nagpur07-Feb-2019Vidarbha have become only the sixth team to successfully defend a Ranji Trophy title, and their captain Faiz Fazal believes the pressure of being defending champions spurred his side on to greater heights. The second win, a 78-run triumph over Saurashtra, was made even sweeter because it came at Vidarbha’s home ground, the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. There was a fair sprinkling of spectators too, given it was a domestic game at a venue that is at a considerable distance from the city.”Pressure is there, but it’s healthy pressure for us,” Fazal said. “When a team does well, expectations rise. And expectations come only when you are doing well. We are very lucky to have that pressure, not everyone is so lucky.”It is not easy to win the Ranji Trophy. To win [across] 11 matches, it’s not a fluke. If anyone thought last year was a fluke, we have proven ourselves again. You have to play very well to win a first-class competition, no team can be taken lightly.”Uttarakhand also came and scored 350 in the first innings against us [in the quarter-final]. The support we had also leads to nervousness. You get the thought that, [We to win here]. We can’t lose here.” We played as a unit and overcame that pressure.”Coach Chandrakant Pandit was wreathed in smiles too. He was the Mumbai coach when they won the 2015-16 title and lost the final the next season, and has been Vidarbha’s coach for the last two seasons. Even though he’s been in four successive Ranji finals, Pandit said that the nervousness of a big match remained the same.”Butterflies are there every time,” Pandit said. “Sachin Tendulkar also said that before playing first ball, there are butterflies in the stomach every time. Naturally, when you play a final, you are looking for your team’s success. The players make the coach. The tension is always there. Prashant [Vaidya, the Vidarbha Cricket Association vice-chairman] knows how I have spent the last four nights. I sometimes get up at 2 am or 3 am. Faiz, I have called him at probably 9.30 at night to my room to discuss planning. Naturally, the pressure is there.”Akshay Karnewar plays a shot•PTI Pandit felt that the nature of this year’s final, with both teams clawing and scrapping to ensure neither got too far ahead in the match, showed the strong core of character that Vidarbha’s players had.”Every final is important and naturally to maintain your reputation is very important,” he said. “The way this final was played, the character inside cricketers played a big role. The game was up and down, there was uncertainty in the game. But the players showed character each time. I give a lot of importance to that.”Every state thinks about winning the Ranji Trophy when the season starts. In our quest, even the people who participated, the club bowlers who’d bowl for two hours to our players at the nets, we should not forget them. Last year, we sealed the game in first innings against Delhi, in the Irani Trophy too we sealed the game that way. But here, our character was shown. The Vidarbha players will learn from this and continue with this and that character will remain.”Looking back at the season, Fazal said the crucial points his team had picked up early in the season set the tone for the team. “Initially, one department was clicking, the other was not clicking,” he said. “But even there, the first match that we saved against Maharashtra was a really good match [Vidarbha drew the match, scoring 501 for 8 after being asked to follow on]. That one point was also very important.”All of those one extra points wherever we got, sometimes via a bonus point, were crucial to qualify for the knockouts. Topping the table was also important. We prepared really well, and we had very positive vibes through the year and the season.”

Easwaran's 183* keeps Bengal alive; Jharkhand denied victory

Abhimanyu Easwaran

Bengal eliminate Delhi
Bengal knocked Delhi out of the running for quarterfinal spot with a stirring fourth-innings chase led by Abhimanyu Easwaran’s 183 not out. Set 322 to win, Easwaran hit the winning boundary that took Bengal to 323 for 3, giving them six points and keeping their tournament alive.Delhi looked like they had the upper hand when they made 301 in their second innings. Bengal had conceded a narrow first-innings lead, so they had to go for victory, and they did that in style, taking only 70.2 overs in the chase. This was 23-year-old Easwaran’s second 180-plus score this season, having hit a career-best 186 against Hyderabad earlier in the season.Thrilling draw stymies JharkhandJharkhand had been set 153 to win against Tripura in one session. They came out swinging, but time ran out with the team 144 for 7 in 21.5 overs, at which point the teams shook hands. The result was a tough one for Jharkhand, for whom qualification has become a very tough race. They had entered this match on 30 points, and a win would have taken them to 36, just two shy of Uttar Pradesh’s 38. That would have left both teams very much in the fray heading into the final round, behind Rajasthan who have zoomed to 44 points and sealed one of the two qualification spots. But now, Jharkhand have 33 points, and to qualify, will need to win their last match against Jammu & Kashmir outright. At the same time, they’ll have to hope that Uttar Pradesh lose their last match, against Assam, to remain on 38. Or, if Jharkhand can manage a bonus-point win, they’ll have more than Uttar Pradesh even if the latter don’t lose, but end up conceding the first-innings lead in a draw.ESPNcricinfo understands that Jharkhand were left disappointed with Tripura’s tactics in this match, with the visiting side slowing the game to a dawdle and thus denying Jharkhand a shot at victory. Tripura had resisted well in their second innings to stretch their score to 308, batting out the first two sessions. Tea was taken with the last Tripura wicket falling, which left Jharkhand an extended final session to chase down the target. However, despite the umpires extending play, Tripura bowled only 21.5 overs in close to two and a half hours, a time-span in which at least 35 overs would have been bowled in the normal course of events.ESPNcricinfo Ltd/ Vishal Dikshit

Tight race in A&BThose who are out of running for a quarterfinal spot are: Hyderabad, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Andhra, Maharashtra, Railways and Chhattisgarh. That still leaves a whopping 10 teams who have a chance, with only one round remaining.Of the ten, Gujarat’s race is run. They have 26 points and have played their full quota of games. Presently third on the table, they need results to go their way to keep them in the top five, and can only watch from the outside.Ranji Trophy 2018-19 Points TableDefending champions Vidarbha are best placed, at the top of the table with 28 points. But if they lose against Saurashtra in their last round, they could actually not end up in the top five – the table is so tight. Here is how that could happen: Karnataka beat Baroda, Saurashtra beat Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh beat Andhra, Himachal Pradesh beat Kerala, and Bengal beat Punjab by a bonus point. All of the winning teams in this scenario would have more than Vidarbha’s 28 points.Still, Vidarbha are masters of their fate at least, and even a draw while conceding the first-innings lead should be enough for them to secure a top-five spot. Among the other teams in the fray, all of Karnataka (27), Gujarat (26), Saurashtra (26), Madhya Pradesh (24), Himachal Pradesh (22), Bengal (22), Kerala (20), Baroda (20) and Punjab (20) could make it, if things fall in place for them.Plate Group raceUttarakhand didn’t have a match in this round, but they had built up such a lead that they are still on top of the table with 37 points. If they win their last game, against bottom-placed Mizoram at home in Dehradun, they will be through regardless. The only other teams who have a theoretical chance of going through – provided Uttarakhand don’t win – are Bihar and Puducherry.Bihar have 34 points, and will play against Manipur, while Puducherry have 32 points and will face Nagaland. For Bihar to go through, they will realistically need to win, ideally with a bonus point, and hope Uttarakhand only manage a first-innings lead at most. For Puducherry to go through, they need three things to happen – for them to win outright, for Uttarakhand to lose outright, and for Bihar to get at most a first-innings lead.Round 8 – Brief ScoresGroup A & BBengal 6 points Delhi 0 pointsAndhra 3 points, Hyderabad 1 pointMadhya Pradesh 6 points, Himachal Pradesh 0 pointsGujarat 7 points, Maharashtra 0 pointsPunjab 7 points, Kerala 0 pointsKarnataka 6 points, Chhattisgarh 0 pointsVidarbha 7 points, Mumbai 0 pointsBaroda 6 points, Railways 0 pointsGroup CJ&K 6 points, Assam 0 pointsJharkhand 3 points, Tripura 1 pointServices 3 points, Odisha 1 pointRajasthan 7 points, Goa 0 pointsUttar Pradesh 6 points, Haryana 0 pointsPlate GroupNagaland 7 points, Arunachal Pradesh 0 pointsPuducherry 7 points, Manipur 0 pointsBihar 7 points, Mizoram 0 pointsMeghalaya 3 points, Sikkim 1 point

“Genuine” – Transfer insider shares what he’s heard from Liverpool

Liverpool are "tempted to sign" a highly-rated player they were linked with this summer once the January transfer window opens, according to an update from transfer insider Dean Jones.

Liverpool transfer updates

The Reds have built one of their most impressive squads in recent years, with strong options across all areas of the pitch as they look to seal Premier League glory this season.

While Liverpool's midfield has been altered significantly, with as many as four new faces coming in during the summer transfer window, there is a nagging feeling that they lack a proper defensive midfielder who can start most weeks.

Alexis Mac Allister is doing his best in the role but doesn't look entirely comfortable there, with the Argentine known more as a box-to-box No.8 during his Brighton days. Meanwhile, Wataru Endo doesn't look at the level required to be a key starter after his move from VfB Stuttgart.

It could be that Jurgen Klopp targets a signing in that position in the coming months, with several players linked in that position, most recently Ezequiel Fernandez, while there is also seemingly a plan to bring in a young attacker, with links to the likes of Victor Osimhen and Jamal Musiala.

Andre to Liverpool

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones talked up the idea of Andre to Liverpool happening in the January window, confirming those links from the summer are absolutely "genuine" and the move could happen in the winter window:

"They signed Wataru Endo, and I think that was a decent signing, but the feeling is that there is still one player missing."We still see Liverpool signings that came in during the summer not necessarily being used in their best sense. We have seen Alexis Mac Allister coming deep at times and I still don't think they've sussed out exactly how to make this midfield work.

"But Andre is definitely still one of the guys that they are tempted to sign. He has been looked at by various clubs, and this Brazilian market is clearly one that a lot of English sides are tapping into at the moment. This is a genuine link and a transfer that does have the potential to happen."

It does feel as though Andre looks like a feasible option in January, perhaps coming in as a squad player to begin with but becoming a regular over time. The 22-year-old has already become such an influential player for Fluminense at the heart of the midfield, and Andre's stats highlight that perfectly, with 158 appearances coming his way while still such a young player.

He possesses the natural defensive skills in the No.6 role that can be so hard to master, as Mac Allister is finding out at the moment, and he could prove to be a fantastic signing midway through the season, just giving Liverpool that extra bit of steel in the middle of the park.

At 22, Andre would be coming in as someone who could be a mainstay of the midfield for many years, and the hope is that he would enjoy a similar influence to that of compatriot Fabinho at Anfield over a significant period.

Klopp's men look so impressive everywhere else, with their plethora of brilliant attacking stars, and if they can plug the defensive midfield gap, it could turn them from challengers into champions in 2023/24.

Coach Rajput confident of Zimbabwe pushing South Africa

With several senior players returning to the fold, the coach is confident his team will put on a better show than they have in the recent past

Liam Brickhill28-Sep-2018Zimbabwe’s coach Lalchand Rajput is oozing optimism ahead of the first ODI in Kimberley on Sunday. It’s one trait by which his short tenure – he took over the position full-time in August after filling in on an interim basis in July – has been characterised.”South Africa has to be aware that this is not the Zimbabwe team of the past,” Rajput said. “This is a team that is going to give them a good run for their money. We have come to show the world that we are a competitive team and every game is important. We are here to show we can play aggressive cricket and we are here to win.”That’s fighting talk, and Rajput has inspired teams before. Part of the Indian team’s think-tank for a couple of years, including when they won the inaugural World T20 in 2007, Rajput was also in charge of Mumbai Indians in the 2008 IPL and oversaw many of Afghanistan’s recent achievements during his tenure as their coach. On his watch, Afghanistan won six out of 10 limited-overs series, secured Full Membership, and even toppled West Indies in an ODI in Gros Islet – their first win in the format over a Full Member other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh.Rajput is no doubt looking to replicate that success with Zimbabwe, and is hoping the challenge of taking on South Africa for the first time in three years will spur his team on. “South Africa is always a big challenge, but a challenge always gets the best out of me and the players,” he said.Rajput’s optimism, however, is yet to translate to success on the field. While Zimbabwe stayed just about afloat in their T20I tri-series against Australia and Pakistan, they floundered in the ODIs to lose 5-0 as Pakistan set numerous records.”The series we played when I took over was not good for us, but it was never going to be easy to face Australia and Pakistan in the T20I triangular series and then Pakistan in the ODI series when we were missing seven to eight players,” Rajput explained.”But now that the players are back, it looks a balanced team – a team that wants to do well. Apart from Graeme Cremer and Sikandar Raza, most of our senior players are back and, when experience and youth combine, we can get the best out of the team.”

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane has been scoring goals for fun at Bayern following his summer move from Tottenham. The England captain is the Bundesliga's top scorer with 31 goals and is chasing down Robert Lewandowski's legendary record of 41 in a single campaign. Yet new team-mate Guerreiro says the striker offers the team far more than just finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

  • WHAT GUERREIRO SAID

He told : "To be honest, I didn’t really know about his style of play before he arrived at the club. I thought perhaps he might just stay up top and wait for chances to score. But he offers a lot more than that. He can link the play, he protects the ball well.

"When I was injured, I watched all the games and I really saw what a great striker he is. He is the type of striker that I really like. He really helps the team out in difficult moments by protecting the ball and by winning fouls. He is not just an important goalscorer for us, he also makes a lot of key passes. He creates a lot of opportunities for his teammates. For example, that pass for Jamal [Musiala] in our last game [against Darmstadt] was exceptional. So he is definitely one of the best strikers.

"He is a very, very important part of the team. He has shown that this season. When he struggles, we all struggle. He needs to maintain his level until the end of the season so we can achieve our aims as a team.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane also has 10 assists for Bayern this season in all competitions but may still finish the season empty-handed. The Bavarian giants have already suffered a shock exit from the German Cup and sit 10 points behind Bayern Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table. Bayern's best chances of silverware is therefore in the Champions League where they have been drawn to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

Bayern return to action on Saturday in Der Klassier against Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarian giants will be hoping Kane can return from injury for that clash. Kane is back in training with Bayern after missing England's friendlies over Belgium and Brazil due to injury.

Australia, you beauty

Down under, the weather is harsh and the fines harsher, but there are also many postcard-perfect scenes to savour

Sidharth Monga21-Dec-2018The first thing you see when you land in Australia. A fine of over A$5000 for one wrong turn. For such a big, wonderful, free-spirited and roomy country with an unmanageable outback, there are a lot of strange rules and fines. Leave the windows of your car down more than 5cm and wander more than three metres away from it in Victoria or Queensland, and you can be fined $117. Have more than 50kg of potatoes on you in Western Australia and your bank account could be $2000 lighter. Some of these, as you would imagine, lead to urban legend. Victoria Energy had to once officially clarify that it was not illegal to change your own lightbulb. Some day-to-day activities you might not have thought would technically be crimes: riding a bike without a bell or a horn, refusing water to anyone who might knock on your door at any time of the day, eating in a designated smoking area, walking a pet while you are on a bike, not holding a dog on a leash or holding one on a leash longer than two metres in Adelaide Parklands.Siddharth Monga/ESPNcricinfo LtdOr even, for some posh restaurants, doggie-bagging food without getting an indemnity form signed.Sidharth Monga/ESPNcricinfo LtdThat’s the Gilberton Swing Bridge over the River Torrens. His music was an anthemic backdrop to underground rebellion against apartheid in South Africa, but the first country to accord him fame was Australia. DJ Holger Brockman played the song “Sugar Man” on his evening show, and then started getting requests to play more of Rodriguez, whose almost literary songwriting resonated with listeners. Melbourne-based promoter Zev Eizik tracked the man down, and had him tour Australia twice, in 1979 and 1981. Like many things Australia, the news didn’t go out to the rest of the world, and Rodriguez was only really “discovered” after the documentary went to the Oscars. “Australia was my first triumph,” Rodriguez said in an interview this year. In the last innings, however, India have to bowl 119.5 overs to get the win, which leaves them the least possible time to travel to Perth, adjust to a new time zone and get ready for another Test in three days.Sidharth Monga/ESPNcricinfo LtdHow far away is Western Australia? Enough to make you set your watches back by two and a half hours. Perth is about as far from Singapore as from Sydney. It is so far, you are not allowed to carry fruit from the rest of Australia into Perth.Well, it might not have that much to do with distance. Australia is home to some of the most amazing plants despite the hostile weather and soil. The ones good for a particular soil will thrive in places where they flourish but not elsewhere. The new Perth Stadium is a homogenous stadium that could well be anywhere in the world. It feels like an airport. The seats in the press box have about the same legroom as an airplane economy cabin. However, the concrete exterior bears a nice touch: an inscription of the poem “Kaya”, which means “Yes”. It weaves together 11 verses of Nyoongar prose and six of English text. I feel that if I read them walking into a big contest, as part of 60,000 celebrating a match together, these words might give me goose bumps.

The river snaking slow beside;
The arching sky, ourselves beneath.
Though we reach for light and stars
Our fleshy souls they touch the earth
Again and again and again; a never-dying-fall.
Travelling, we are many peoples;
But our footprints make us one.
Voices grow like tongues of flame,
And in tongues of flame the fires come…
Applause it falls like heavy rain.

Sidharth Monga/ESPNcricinfo LtdBack to an Adelaide sunset after Australia level the series in Perth. Feel sorry for the players, who have gone on to Melbourne and are not free to travel anywhere they want. I wonder if they get to explore countries they play in – and Australia is waiting to be explored. Does one stadium merge into another, one dietician-advised meal into another, a hotel room into another, a silly sledge into another?Feel sorry for myself too, because cricket tours these days hardly give you time to get off the beaten path. Know more about Australia from previous trips, and am reading about it rather than seeing it this time. Mostly Bill Bryson’s excellent . Wish to one day travel the length and breadth of this wonderfully hostile and pleasant country. Right now the tour is more than half over. It’s like coming towards the end of a book you never want to end. Slow down, Sugar Man.
