Southampton must be patient with Che Adams given Jamie Vardy’s slow PL start

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Jamie Vardy.

A man who scored twice for Leicester against Bournemouth last time out to take his Premier League tally to 83 goals in 180 games for the Foxes.

In that time, the former non-league striker has become an England international – scoring against Wales at the European Championships – as well as a Premier League winner and a Champions League quarter-finalist.

It’s safe to say that the 32-year-old has been one of the best forwards in the Premier League in recent years.

However, Vardy’s knack of finding the net took a while to warm up, to say the least.

In the season before he hit 24 goals to ensure the title ended up at the King Power Stadium, the Foxes’ No.9 scored just five goals, with four of them coming in the last ten games of the campaign.

It was his first taste of life in the top-flight, and Vardy’s slow start should resonate with another forward of similar ilk who has also began life in the Premier League at a snail’s pace – Che Adams.

Southampton parted with £15m to bring the 23-year-old to St Mary’s this summer, but he is yet to find the back of the net so far this term despite starting all four league games.

Similar to Vardy with his undoubted pace and tendency to run the channels, Adams and Southampton must take inspiration from the Leicester star and use his journey as reason to be patient.

Adams scored 22 Championship goals last season, whereas Vardy hit 16 in his last campaign in the second tier before becoming a Premier League player, whilst the £15m man is also nine years younger than the Premier League winner – all the reasons for Southampton to remain patient with Adams are present.

It is surely only a matter of time before the former Birmingham man’s top-flight career takes off.

La Liga Transfer Roundup: Firpo news, Bale update, Malcom in Zenit talks

[ad_pod ]

The two biggest deals so far in Spain’s top-tier this summer have seen Antoine Griezmann join Barcelona from Atletico Madrid, whilst Eden Hazard has switched Chelsea for Atletico’s rivals Real. But what does the rest of the transfer window have in store? Today’s La Liga transfer roundup discusses Barcelona’s interest in Junior Firpo, the future of Gareth Bale and Malcom’s potential departure from the Camp Nou.

Barca edge closer to Firpo

Report: AS is reporting that the departure of Pep Segura as Barcelona’s sporting manager will facilitate Junior Firpo’s rumoured transfer from Real Betis to the Blaugrana. The 58-year-old was said to not be a big fan of the Spain U21 international. Barca are hoping that the deal can be completed this week so that the defender can travel to the USA with the squad on Monday.

Verdict: There has been a fair amount of talk linking Firpo to the Catalan club, and so this deal looks likely to go through. It appears to be more a question of when rather than if. Barcelona have plenty of talent and a plethora of quality all over the pitch, apart from at left-back. Jordi Alba is currently Ernesto Valverde’s only option there, so Firpo’s arrival would be a welcome addition to the squad. At just 22 years of age, he could one day replace Alba as Barca’s first choice on the left side of the defence, and his ability to play left-midfield shows a certain versatility, although it is questionable how much use that will be considering the current manager favours a 4-3-3 with two wingers rather than wide midfielders.

How likely is the deal? 8/10

Real “reopen the track” to Tottenham for Bale

Report: As per Tuesday’s print edition of Sport (via Sport Witness), Real Madrid have “reopened the track” for Gareth Bale’s potential switch to Tottenham. The Wales international was close to a move to Jiangsu Suning, but Florentino Perez’s financial demands scuppered the deal.

Verdict: Bale is almost certain to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, especially considering that Zinedine Zidane has made it so blatantly clear that he does not want the winger at the club. Whilst a return to Tottenham would make sense from a sentimental point of view, financially, it doesn’t seem viable. The 30-year-old currently earns £300,000 a week at Los Merengues and will reportedly not take a pay-cut to leave. Tottenham, meanwhile, only have one player that takes in £200,000 or more every seven days in Harry Kane. Spurs would need to break their wage structure to take him back, and that does not seem like something Daniel Levy would be willing to do. Real, therefore, would likely need to subsidise the former Southampton man’s move to London.

How likely is the deal? 4/10

Zenit in swoop for Malcom

Report: According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Barcelona are close to reaching an agreement with Zenit St Petersburg for the sale of Malcom. Talks between the two clubs are ongoing, with Javier Ribalta, the Russian team’s sporting director, apparently already in Catalonia to complete the deal.

Verdict: What a disappointing 12 months it has been for Malcom. His performances in 2017/18 for Bordeaux were so impressive – he scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 35 Ligue 1 games – that several clubs declared an interest in him last summer, and Barcelona were so desperate to sign him that they even hijacked the 22-year-old’s move to AS Roma. But he barely got a look in during the last campaign, and made just 24 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit. He has been linked with Everton and Arsenal amongst others so far this summer, so an eventual switch to Russia would be rather anticlimactic. It also seems to be a waste of his ability – surely there is a club from Europe’s top five leagues that would be happy to take him? For Zenit, this signing would be a coup, so kudos to them for putting themselves in a position to make it happen.

How likely is the deal? 7.5/10

Man Utd icon Patrice Evra takes to Twitter to celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo anniversary

[ad_pod ]It seems so long ago now that Manchester United signed a young, up and coming Portuguese forward named Cristiano Ronaldo.16 years ago that same Portuguese kid already looked like a world-breaker and soon, he definitely proved to be one with his performances. When all is said and done, Ronaldo played 292 games for the Red Devils, bagging an incredible 118 goals and tallying an equally impressive 68 assists in the process.

During his time in England, he also put nine trophies in his cabinet, making him one of Manchester United’s most celebrated players.

And one other icon of the club, Patrice Evra, took to Twitter to pay tribute to the Portuguese superstar on his anniversary with the Manchester team, but he also did it in his own way.

Evra complimented Ronaldo by saying that “he’s a machine” but also took some time to rinse him as well, reminding everyone how he made the Frenchman work out when he was actually invited to lunch.

That just goes to show what a dedicated person the Portuguese actually is and how Evra is always ready for a joke or two, even with the best of them.

Manchester United fans react to rumours of Bale-Pogba swap

[ad_pod ]

Just when you thought the Gareth Bale to Manchester United rumours had finally gone away, they just find a way of coming back up.

The Welshman’s name has been on the radar of the Red Devils for almost every transfer window since joining Real Madrid back in 2013, but a move to Old Trafford has never come to fruition.

Now, Spanish publication MARCA claim that Madrid’s pursuit of Paul Pogba this summer has given Los Blancos the idea of potentially sending Bale in the opposition direction to try and sweeten the deal.

After hearing that Bale could be coming in to replace Pogba, United fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter and many were rather unimpressed by the whole thing.

Red Devils supporters insisted that despite their previous interest in the former Tottenham star, his recent lack of form, and history of troublesome injuries had turned him into a very unattractive proposition.

Indeed, having seen their struggles with paying huge wages to under-performing stars like Alexis Sanchez, United fans seemed keen to point out that signing Bale would simply give them another problem akin to the Chilean.

How Man Utd’s starting XI could look next season

[ad_pod ]

Having ended the campaign on a rather underwhelming note, Manchester United have been understandably busy in the transfer market this summer as they look to revitalise the squad.

The club have already confirmed the signings of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in recent weeks, and look intent on splashing more cash before they take on Chelsea in their opening Premier League game of the season.

As the transfer deadline approaches next month, just how will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team shape-up for that mouth-watering clash against the Blues? We’ve had a go at predicting how they might look.

Despite reports in recent months over suggestions contract talks have stalled between David de Gea and United, the Spaniard will likely retain his no.1 spot come the beginning of the season. He had some rather surprising rough patches last season, but as they say: ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’.

In front of him, United’s defence looks revamped with the already confirmed addition of England U21 international Wan-Bissaka. Along with Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw, Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire could become the leader of the side’s back-four if the transfer saga surrounding him at the moment ends up well for the Manchester side.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

After enjoying a meteoric rise at Newcastle last year, Sean Longstaff could be another home-grown star United sign this summer to really refresh their side, with Solskjaer eyeing a move for the Geordie.

Next to him in that holding role, Fred will have to show the kind of consistent form that convinced the club to fork out big-money for him last summer, or his United career could end very sourly indeed.

Further forward is where United fans will surely start to get excited. Daniel James was the first man to walk through the Old Trafford doors this summer and whilst the 21-year-old is a huge talent, he may have to settle for a place on the bench as Solskjaer eases him into Premier League football.

That should mean Anthony Martial gets a run from the left-hand side, whilst on the opposite flank, Jesse Lingard will be backed to reproduce the kind of form that marked the early months of Solskjaer’s reign.

In that number ten role, Paul Pogba’s potential departure would leave a massive hole in the United midfield, but if reports are to be believed, the club could be preparing a major statement of their own by signing Sporting sensation Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal international scored 32 times last season and could give the Red Devils a major goal threat from midfield, and well and truly replace Pogba.

Up top, Romelu Lukaku looks set to join Inter, which should give Marcus Rashford the keys to the kingdom in the iconic number nine position. Having signed a bumper new deal, the England international will be expected to fire United back to the promised land of Champions League football next year.

West Ham: Offloading Marko Arnautovic will be smart business this summer

It was always going to be hard to see Marko Arnautovic at West Ham for the foreseeable future after the transfer fiasco last January, and this summer could finally see the Austrian head for the exit.

The drama that engulfed the winter transfer window nearly saw Arnautovic walk from the London Stadium to the Far East of China, where the Telegraph reported that the striker wanted to move to Shanghai SIPG, only for the former Stoke City man to remain in Stratford and sign a new deal with the club, and this summer has seen more links of a move away for the attacker.

The Daily Mail reports that Arnautovic has caught the eye of a trio of Serie A clubs; Inter Milan, Roma, and Fiorentina, so perhaps they’d be wise to cash in.

Of course, a deal would be difficult with Arnautovic’s new contract running to 2023, meaning it would likely take a big offer from any of these sides to lure the striker away from east London, but with the likes of Callum Wilson (OneFootball) and Maxi Gomez (The Evening Standard) being rumoured with a move to West Ham, perhaps there’d be scope to let him go if a new man does arrive.

Indeed, a move back to Italy could be good for Arnautovic after the year he has had with West Ham. Sure he impressed on the pitch with 10 goals and four assists in the league, but his relationship with the fans has been severely damaged (Adrian Durham of talkSPORT claimed in March that supporters were ‘done’ with him) since the China transfer fiasco, and maybe it would be for the best for him depart, allowing the club to benefit both financially and with an extra spot for a new attacker next season.

West Ham fans, would you sell Arnautovic this summer? Let us know!

Aston Villa’s secret weapon John McGinn shines at Wembley

[ad_pod ]

Jack Grealish has dominated the limelight at Aston Villa this season. Boyhood Villa fan turned captain and a creative English midfielder coveted by a variety of Premier League clubs, the narratives have been quite simply too tempting to resist.

But that has allowed the other standout midfield talent in this Villa team to seep under the radar. John McGinn arrived at Villa Park last summer and has been as crucial as Grealish in their push for promotion – it just so happens he plays directly alongside a young player who everybody, for one reason or another, appears to have a vested interest in.

McGinn was the Man of the Match at Wembley on Monday as Villa secured promotion with a 2-1 victory over Derby County through a performance that defined much of his first season with the Birmingham-based outfit. By no means his best display of the campaign, the Scotland international still created the most chances and made the joint-most tackles of any Villa player, while scoring what proved to be the winner.

“Fair play nonsense!” – Watch one fan’s astonishing defence of Leeds’ controversial goal against Villa on Sunday in the video below…

Again, McGinn has netted more illustrious strikes this season – seven in the Championship alongside nine assists – but this goal was all about grit and determination, rushing into the box and rising to a loose, looping ball just in time to beat Kelle Roos to it. For a club with as much potential as Villa, it was a massive goal.

McGinn’s performance will no doubt gain some more attention than his expert displays have received for much of the season, but the good news for Villa is that he’s still very much their secret weapon. Top flight clubs will focus on Grealish next season as this team’s beating heart and talismanic influence, yet McGinn has proved he’s just as capable of being Villa’s driving force.

Premier League be warned; there are two quality midfielders at Aston Villa – ignore either at your peril.

Celtic: Moving for Mark Diemers will help Hoops quickly forget Tom Rogic

Celtic fans haven’t seen as much from Tom Rogic as they’d have liked to this season. The 26-year-old has managed just five goals and six assists in his 34 games and with those stats, seeing another #10 linked is no surprise, as Voetbal international have claimed, via Ninety Minutes Online, that the Bhoys want Mark Diemers this summer.

The chances are, you won’t have heard of Mark Diemers, so let us help you fill in the blanks. The Dutch midfielder is currently plying his trade in the Eredivisie with Fortuna Sittard. The midfielder is one year younger than Rogic yet his numbers have been much more impressive. Having started every single game for the Eredivisie club in the domestic league he’s returned seven goals and seven assists.

Those numbers are impressive in themselves, but considering this is the Diemers debut season for Fortuna Sittard having moved to Sittard from De Graafschap last summer it makes his minutes and goal involvement all the more incredible. Just 12 months on from his move to Sittard, though, he could be on the move again, this time potentially swapping The Netherlands for Scotland.

Rogic may have had a tough season as both injuries and spells away with the Australian national team have held him back, but in truth, it looks like his time at the club may be coming to an end soon. Despite contributing 11 goals and assists this season, he just hasn’t looked himself, and if you were to remove his influence on the Bhoys season they would sacrifice just two points and still complete the treble.

With Diemers, it’s been very different. The Dutchman has helped to earn his side a number of valuable points in a season where they narrowly avoided having to partake in a relegation play-off by just one point. It looks like Diemar could be ready to trade relegation scrapping to title-winning, though, and what better place to do it than at Parkhead with the serial winners Celtic?
